Hi John! Do you ever do face pulls at a horizontal angle, either standing or seated (like on the seated cable row)? I find these stimulate my rear delts more than when I do them from the low pulley position like you demonstrated here...especially with an external rotation.
Thank you for all the work out videos i turned 68 last month retired i watch your videos every day they work i am getting healrhy working out thank you again for all thr help
RIP 💖 you know someone is loved and respected when you've just discovered lifting and seeing these beautiful comments on all his videos.... May you all have peace in your hearts and may we become as awesome as John is
I had no idea John has passed. I’m new to lifting and his videos have been soooo helpful. He seems like such a great guy. Rest In Peace John and prayers to his family !
Same here. By the time I learner about John and these amazing videos, he had already passed. But his legacy will live on forever. Out of the thousands of exercise/bodybuilding videos out there, these ones here on his channel seem to work best for me. Something about his approach and the way he explains things makes it so easy to understand and execute. They're direct, short and sweet. No fluff or filler. If he needs to explain, he'll reference his life long experience and decades of training with the best. Some guys are great bodybuilders, but not great teachers. Some are great teachers but not great bodybuilders. John was the rare few great bodybuilders and great teachers. Thank you to John's family for continuing to upload videos till this day. Sometimes it maybe same or similar to past videos, but hearing/seeing it again just might make it sink in this time.
I still come to his channel and like the vids I didn't press like, and comment on some of them for the algorhytm, and I hope more people will do the same. The man was a treasure and left us too soon, not to mention his family...
Whenever training gets stale or things arent firing right, I always come back to John's videos and learn something new even though i've watched them. Proof of the man's legacy. Legends live forever!
I was just ganna right this comment, as im looking back just trying to refresh my mind :D yea Legend! I feel like his tutorials are just the right length and they follow the same explanation pattern. It's just real familiar at this point, not fluff.
For real…. That part when John says, ‘as you fatigue you’ll use some traps…that’s ok’….. That is why he is such a respected figure, person, human, and father. He’d always talk to you like a loving dad, who aimed helping you develop the best ways to target your muscles, instead of talking you down with excessive rigor. Whoever doesn’t like John had to get their head checked cause there’s definitely something wrong there…😅
I haven’t had the courage to watch one of John’s videos since his passing and this is a reminder that I have been missing out. He explains things like no other, such a great coach, humble, an inspiration, truly missed.
Agreed...do your full range of motion with weight you can handle, then go heavy and griz out whatever shitty reps you can. This most notably works for rear delts for sure....
John, I think I speak for the fitness community when I say this: Thank you for sharing your workouts, tips and tricks with us, in addition to being incredibly down to earth.
Swings...... I tried these one day. I hadn't had that kind of burn in a while. I started throwing these in fairly regularly and I see the growth above what I was seeing prior. Thanks for sharing these training tips John.
John had such a calm and sincere way about him and his training tips are pure gold for me, RIP great man you live on in my pursuits of staying in shape.
John, I'm 54 and have been weight training since my college days. Your series of three exercises targeting different muscle groups is a game changer! I have literally cut down may routines to follow your exercises and they are killers - 4 /5 sets 6 to 8 reps, three different exercises, that's all she wrote. Thank you, this is definitely a more time-efficient way of exercising not to mention that it will kick your behind if done correctly.
Your tips for rear delts gave me best pump on that area ever. I used to move heavier weights and allow my traps to take over, was focussing entirely on scapula retraction until your tips on isolating rear delt. Feel pretty dumb for not realising the difference before, but the feeling speaks for itself. Rear delt flies done correctly kick the shit out of your rear delts.
By the time I learned about John and this amazing channel, he had already passed. But his legacy will live on forever. Out of the thousands of exercise/bodybuilding videos out there, his seem to work best for me. Something about his approach and the way he explains things makes it so easy to understand and execute. They're direct, short and sweet. No fluff, no filler, no fat. Most guys are good bodybuilders, but not good teachers. Some are good teachers but not good bodybuilders. John was the rare few great bodybuilders and great teachers. Thank you to John's family for continuing to upload videos till this day. Some videos my be similar or cover the same topic as past videos (not complaining at all) but sometimes hearing/seeing it again makes it sink in to fully understand it. Sometimes it takes me a couple times to really understand what is being said to the point where I can execute it properly.
I, like many, have watched videos from folks who gave it a go, yet never connected. John, in my own opinion, has by far the most relevant criteria for health care of the body. Yes, he shows the many avenues to body building, yet he also gives us a look at what he feels will give us a better feel for how each individual may adapt to keeping ourselves in a healthier form. RIP John.
For someone who lifts at home with nothing but barbells and dumbbells, I think the Muscle Snatch is a fantastic rear delts exercise. It may not be as concentrated as the exercices shown in the video, but it sure helps with injury prevention. I have noticed that all old-time weightlifters had at least decent rear delts, and they were doing a lot of snatches, cleans and various high pulls.
Out of everybody doing bodybuilding videos this is the guy I keep coming back to. Its not "over-produced", its like you're in the same room with him having a regular conversation about weights.
Hi John, Thanks for providing such great insight beyond the exercises. Great to know the in and outs of being geared and natural. I have had a people ask questions about this for years. You'e one of the few pros. Who is not afraid to provide an open and ojective opinion. I am a 61 year old personal trainer. I started lifting 43 years ago. Some things have changed and some things have not. What we all inherently knew about training back in the day has clearly been validated today with studies and science. Keep it coming John, great work!
The funny thing is everything I've ever learned about bodybuilding I learned from the real bodybuilders not from gurus. When I had a shoulder pain it's because I forgot to work my rear delts. The a way I corrected it was the exercises you just showing in the video. So this exercises is your bread-and-butter to bring up your rear delts you absolutely right Your channel is very useful and educational keep up the good work.
SIR every video I watch of yours makes me want to run back to the gym for another session. I’m self taught via TH-cam videos and your are extremely inspiring 🙏🏾
Thanks to your tips and explanations my shoulders are getting nicely capped! Rear delts have always been a problem but now I'm seeing results. Thanks again 👍
Awesome a man with a scientific knowledge and approach, that is what works the muscle. Methods, priority training, training to failure, antagonists training.
Agree 1000 % putting rear dlts first. Also until I lowered the lbs and really concentrated on the feel of the rear delt they responded. I'm sure ud agree the rear delt is a tiny muscle compared to front & side so therefore its seems u really need to feel it work to isolate it. Going heavy I can guarantee their not working that rear delt but everything else around it. Great video as always John
Saw John do these delts "swings" on a video a few weeks ago and decided to incorporate them into my routine. SO every time I hit failure, I start these. WOW do they light up the delts. I use them on rear, side and front delt raises. Brilliant addition to the mix.
I don't think this man will ever leave my feed. Love all his advice even when it's against what other people say R.I.P. wherever you are I am sure you training someone wherever your spirit flys.
My current favorite is a cable cross for rear delts because everyone’s always on the pec deck and the lower chest cable fly is always open. I definitely want to add that upright row version of a face pull
John is the very best educator on TH-cam fitness. So much experience and wisdom. I've been training hard for years and know my way around a gym but even still I have learned and gained immensely from these videos. When I'm ready to prep for my first show I'm definitely hiring John.
Great video! I did the bent-over DB lateral raises for rear delts a few weeks ago...full reps and the controlled swinging 1/2 reps you mention in the video....my rear delts were on fire!
My favorite is a seated cable row to the high chest. I use a bar that I can get my elbows far back and squeeze my upper back. It's a very similar motion to 5:04.
I do seated rear flies, thats how i have learned to connect with them the best. I do a short rom, the muscle is only about 3 or 4" long, and my focus has been on learning to isolate them and keep my traps and everything else out of the movement, to make my rear delt work better later. For me and maybe im wired odd, when my chest is on my lap, grip pronated, i have to focus on driving my elbows forward/ away from my body as the weight comes up, so i can feel my delts.
Listen to John. I've implemented his rear delt training for the last year. The results have been dramatic. I'm not a bodybuilder but adopted his rear delt training for shoulder health and balance. I could still clean and press 275 when I was approaching 40 years old at a body weight of about 200. Still chasing a 300 incline that I haven't hit since I was 50. Point being my rear delts had always been non existent. That probably resulted in the 2 severe rotator cuff injury's I had years ago. So at 65 years old if I've seen such impressive gains I can't imagine what a young person could accomplish. You don't have to be a bodybuilder to benefit from his experience.
I was about 35 lbs over weight. Stumbled on your videos and starting making good use of the home gym for the past 8 months and my brother who happens to be my jobsite supervisor came up to me this past Monday and said "how'd you lose the weight and get shredded? Make copies of my Insanity DVDs and told him about you. He came to work yesterday wrecked lmao thanks for the videos, very helpful
A seated cable row (with a wide-grip bar) looks very similar to the second exercise. It definitely gives me a burn that I don't get from doing just the fly (although I had great results from just the fly) I will definitely give these variations a try.
I REALLY loved this vid!! So refreshing to see a guy who's a Regular cat. Talks like u would in a REGULAR conversation. No TH-cam mannerisms & over the top sales pitch bells & whistles. Str8 to the point (which is WHY WE CLICK VIDEOS) 10 outta 10!!!
Man, I just moved to Pickerington. Wish he was still around. What a legend. Hey John, your shoulder videos (among others) are my go tos. Thank you sir 🙏🏼
Just watch Jay Cutler lift and then think about importance of range of motion. It's important but not more important than time under tension. Both have their place.
"Let the natural movement flow" Finally U the first guru I've seen say that. Movement of the scapula is the body's way to not destroy the shoulder joint. To teach the body not to move the scapula by pinning it is really bad.
So many lifters these days just get lost over analyzing everything and needing studies and research to back up every movement they do. If you're going hard and you can feel the muscle you're trying to load doing the work then you're probably on the right page. Exercise selection doesn't need to be complicated and I love the training methodology you promote!
These videos is one way we can always keep John with us. Timeless. One day John, I will finally be able to meet you in person. Until then, Godspeed brother.
