- This was one of the and most likely last epic tank battle in the history of mankind. In this educational history video, we will take a look at what happened in the gulf war at the Battle of 73 Easting.
The end of America's war in Vietnam saw a US military in crisis- its morale all but depleted and its combat expertise watered down by massive conscription. In the years that followed the Pentagon focused on restoring America's military by returning to an all-volunteer force and addressing the problems of systemic drug abuse and a weak officer and non-commissioned officer corp. But just how well would America's military fare in a new conflict after years of neglect and waste? Twenty years after Vietnam, the world would get to find out as America's forces were immediately thrown into the last of the greatest tank battles of the 20th century. Ok... so there are some glaring inaccuracies here.
I’m going to begin by saying that I am a career soldier and a 19k (Abrams Crewman). I joined the army back in 1998 and other than a 4 year break in service, I have served ever since. Additionally, I am what you would call an Armored History “nerd”. I have been on every version of the Abrams since the M1A1 “Heavy Common” and I have served under and spoken directly with HR McMaster about the battle of 73 Easting.
First off, the latest version of the Abrams that was fielded in the gulf was the M1A1, not the A2. This might sound like a nitpicking thing to say, but the difference in capabilities of the two platforms are vast. Many units were still equipped with later versions of the M1IP which had the smaller 105mm main gun and the Marines and some National Guard units had the M60A3 with the same 105mm gun and none of the advanced armor that the M1 boasted. These tanks were still highly effective against Iraqi Armor.
Next, while the T72 is an effective platform for what it is, the Iraqi “Lion of Babylon” version was a stripped down export version. With its rudimentary fire control system, its maximum effective range with its 125mm is at around 2000 meters. 2000 meters for an Abrams isn’t even considered long range. Statements from captured Iraqi soldiers state that when Eagle troop first opened fire the Iraqis thought they were under attack from artillery. The Abrams with its superior thermal sights and fire control systems was able to engage and destroy those elements before they were even detected. Granted, Eagle Troop was completely outnumbered, but the Republican Guard was completely out maneuvered and out classed. The battle of 73 Easting, while an excellent example of American tactical and technological superiority, was a one sided “Turkey Shoot.”

@@dragonbank6807 No, chobham armor was first developed for the Challenger MBT. Which, originally, was designed as an export tank primarily to Iran, of all places.
It was only picked to become the replacement for the Chieftain because the Brits never could get the legendarily terrible Leyland L60 multifuel engine to work properly.
At any given time, the Chieftains operational numbers was only around 30% because of that piece of junk.

My dad was in desert storm, he is 59 as of today. He is turning 60 in a few weeks. Words aren’t enough for me to express how happy I am to still have him with me today.

Lots of misinformation here. I deployed as a tanker with the 1st Cavalry Division. We took the old M1 Abrams we were using at Ft Hood with us to Saudi. A couple of months later, in December, we convoyed to the port and swapped out our M1s for brand new M1A1 tanks straight off the assembly line. My new tank had 7 miles on the odometer and the paint in my drivers hatch was still sticky. We then took them to a area near the port where the mechanics welded slabs of DU armor to the front of the turrets. My tank was also outfitted with an Israeli made mine plow. My unit was posted in the Wadi al Batin after the air war began and we made frequent probes across the line into Iraq. A few of our Cav Scouts were killed on one of these probes when their Bradley took a hit from an enemy tank. Our Division used probes and strikes by missiles and artillery to get the Iraqi army focused on our area. When the ground war began we rushed up the Wadi, blasted everything in sight and then withdrew as other Divisions made the famous "left hook" and came up behind and on the flank of the enemy who had been focused on fighting us. We were some of the first conventional forces across enemy lines and broke through the razor wire, anti-tank trenches, mine fields and other barriers the Iraqis had spent months constructing.

I know I'm supper late but I was there with 2AD Forward attached to 1ID. I was an 18-year old loader on an M-1A1(H) tank. 72 Easting is always discussed but it is honestly just the opening shots to a much larger battle at Norfolk that followed that no one ever talks about. Shortly after this engagement 2ACR did a passage of lines with our brigade that was spearheading 1ID. The weather was horrible. It had been all week. Super cold, wet, and foggy. Felt more like Bar Harbor than the Arabic desert. We lost two M1-A1s to frat that night so I know we lost at least two because I stood in front of them, but I think up to four to frat total. 2ACR created a chaotic mess when they let themselves get overly engaged to be honest but there were a lot of battalion level commanders looking to make a name for themselves that night. Anyway, that's nothing new. A couple comments that stood out in this video. I really wish you guys would consult a SME instead of just the internet sometimes because a lot of people get this stuff wrong. No M-1A2s in ODS. We deployed from Germany and had just received the newest M-1 family of tanks 3-months before ODS. The M-1A1(H) or Heavy. Also. T-72 can't take a hit from an M-1 APFSDS-T round at 2k, 3k, or 4k in the frontal armor. We were popping turrets of T-72s at 3500 to 3800 meters. one last thing, the 1UK deployed with Challenger tanks that also had a form of Chobham armor.

@@BowmanFox ERA would be useless anyways because the US mainly use APFSDS which is a KE (kinetic Energy) and ERA is mainly used against HEATFS or chemical rounds such as rockets and grenades. The T64BV is a better version than the T72 armour wise because as you said it was am export version it's the same with the Abrams with the 105mm is now a export to Dubai and other countries
As someone who actually participated in the Battle of 73 Easting in Eagle Troop 2nd ACR under McMaster I can tell you that the Iraqis actually fought hard This was NOT as big as Kursk, but it wasn't a small battle either. This is the first video that I've seen that mentions McMaster disobeyed orders. Upper leadership was deficient and there is a reason why no book on the subject uses the squadron commanders name. The squadron XO and McMaster basically had to take over.

reminds me of a story from WW2 where some Soviets planned to hold a defensive line using an abandoned church as a defensive position since it was solid stone with a stone wall around it and could withstand small arms as well as stop most explosives and any tanks the Germans had at the time. The only problem with the Soviets plan was that this group of Germans had just gotten the new Tiger tank, which simply drove through their fire, drove through the stone wall, ran over a tree, and then plowed through the church without stopping.

Intensity is determined by time. The ww2 battle was a longer period of combat, while the 76 easting lasted less than half an hour.

I'm pretty sure there were more intense US tank battles in WWII France too. Looking back, the battle of 73 Easting was not that intense on the scale of intense tank battles in world history. It may have been the biggest blow out though...

Dominic Schellenberg No, they are not “literally the same thing.” The Battle of Prokhorovka was an armored clash that occurred DURING the Battle of Kursk. The Battle of Kursk lasted from the beginning of Citadel in early July to late August and was the name of the entire confrontation around the Kursk salient. Prokhorovka only lasted a day (July 12).

Having served in Desert Storm as a Marine I can say that the reason the US won so quick was based on several factors. The primary reason the US won so quick was the superiority of weapons and military training. Sure the Republican Guard fought in Iran but that doesn't really say much because in both Iraq and Iran people were conscripted into the military without proper training. This would be another reason the US won so quickly, Iraq forced people to fight. One guy we captured was about 75 years old and blind, yes numbers mattered more than quality. One of their battalion commanders was forced out of retirement to fight the war, he simply surrendered his entire unit as soon as he could. The food for some was extremely poor and had to be cooked on old oil drum lids once the oil had been burned off (however not entirely). In addition moral was super low by the time of the ground war since the Iraqis had been bombed for an entire month from the air and received new worthless money as pay, Saddam just printed more money thereby devaluing it in the process. Several other factors played into the US and Coalition win but that takes at least a lengthy paper or a short book to explain in detail.

@@billmcfadden4791 .....battle of Kursk 6000 tanks, up to 1200 destroyed, yom kippur 3430-3600 tanks and apc's. Israel had 293 Centurion tanks combat ready out of 385 total.

This video is extremely inaccurate. First it tries to paint Desert Storm as a challenge for the UN Coalition. Iraq got absolutely slammed by American forces. Not only that but you keep using inaccurate tank model visuals, for instance when you referred to the T-72 you put on screen several different vehicles including a T-14 Armata. American tanks used in Desert Storm were the M1A1, not M1A2, as the M1A2 was developed during Iraqi Freedom in the early 2000’s. And it’s funny how you say the US’s conscripted military in the Vietnam war ruined the military’s face and they had to fix their reputation and show they were competent again. While you are correct in some respects, you seem to dramatize it, showing Desert Storm as a test of the American military in “The last major war of the 20th century”. So in conclusion this video has so many things wrong with it it’s hard to ignore. Please focus on quality and stop pushing out these low quality videos so often.

Tbh, the Iraqi equipment was indeed older, but it was battle proven and still very useful if used correctly. That being said, Iraq had one of the top 5 largest armies in the world at that point. Yes they were facing off against a coalition that included America, but the majority of American equipment wasn't battle tested and was a gamble. I feel like if the Iraqi command structure was more flexible, the Iraqis could've forced a peace deal or at least prolonged the coalition advance

Just before showing the "T72/Armata," they show Iraqi tanks as Leopard 2A5s, and previously to that, when showing Iraq invading Kuwait, they used Abrams graphics to show the Iraqi armor. What a joke. Pathetic.

The Iraqi T72s only had access to the 3BM9 shell, which could only penetrate 300mm of armour at 500m, which is less armour than the turret cheeks of the abrams, which were around 400mm on even the first model. By desert storm, they were using upgraded variants but even so, the T72s could do very little to the abrams. The shells used in desert storm by the Abrams used DU (depleted uranium) penetrators. There were 2 main types of Abrams used, ones with 105mm guns and ones with 120mm guns. The smallest one with the 105, using the M833 DU round could penetrate the T72 beyond 2,000 meters, and that was the first DU round used the for 105mm gun used on early abrams (pre M1A1.) The 120mm armed abrams would easily be able to penetrate the T72 beyond 2,000 meters. The T72s were nothing compared to the abrams
Chill Destroyer The targeting systems were more important then the guns, lots of T-72 waited around with engines off but the Abram was very fast with stabilizers, allowing them to take out most T-72 before their turrets could turn. Also the Iraq military wasn’t trained to the extent the US were.

@Big Fish the M1A2 didn't even enter service until 1992, a year after the gulf war ended.
Chill Destroyer No tanks is invincible, it’s likely classified but the I’m certain the M1A1 had weakspots. Lower plate, turret ring, somewhere. There were plenty of scenarios that the Americans actually maneuvered around exposing sides and rear. Even if the T-72s were firing high explosive it would still be very dangerous, but the abrams would rarely allow the T-72 to test its armor. There were plenty of Bradley fighting vehicles around too and surely you don’t think they could stop a 125mm gun, yet almost all survived.
My dad was in desert shield/storm and after spent 8 months in Somalia, he told me that the republican guard was like it got stuck in the Cold War and they mowed over them every time they fought.

Because it’s just to simplify things, your average joe would probably not know the difference between a Challenger 2 and a Leopard 2A6 or M1A2 Abrams
You forgot to mention our turrets were automatically controlled with a joystick while the Iraqi tanks still had to hand crank their turrets. Imagine you're an Iraqi tank crew member and you find yourself encountering an Abrams to your right and as your frantically cranking your turret by hand to face the enemy the u.s. tanks turret literally just swivels and fires at you.
T-72s had turret motors in them. The problem was they weren't maintained very well and even on the non-export Soviet T-72s they had problems with high failure rates. There's no even kind of modern MBT that requires you to crank the turret around - that kind of thing is used as a backup only.

I remember when Colin Powell as a 3 star and was commander of V Corps in Germany - which I was part of with 11th ACR. He left to go work at the State Dept. and quickly got his 4th star and the rest is history leading up to his becoming head of the Joint Chiefs. He like all generals was as much "a politician" as a commander.

I was there and on the frontline. Besides what this video described, we also won because we crushed the Iraqi army's moral. They would come out with hands raised kissing our hand in gratitude of having saved them from starving to death. I respect anyone willing to put on a uniform, but you sometimes have to know when it's time to raise your hands.
Were they starving because we were bombing all their supplies ? We didn't let anything through ?

Sgt Ramos Tank E24 everything was planned and executed correctly from beginning to end. Cutting off resupply is one of the first tasks to achieve.
the M1A2 was not first tank with chobham armor. It was invented by the British and put on the challenger 1 & 2, the XM-1, M1, M1A1, and M1A2. The XM-1 was the first tank to have it implemented.

The United States Military studied the Iran-Iraq war where the Iraqi Regular Army and the Republican Guard preformed quite well. However after that conflict, Saddam redesigned the Iraqi military to suppress internal problems, and handicapped the Regular Army to avoid revolts from his officer corps; while providing the best equipment to the Republican Guard which was a potent force. The United States over prepared and were shocked at the state of the Iraqi military, with a notable exception of the Republican Guard. The Republican Guard would at times fight to the last man, and assault American formations much larger than themselves. They took heavy losses but were a professional and dangerous organization.
america doesnt really have 'elite' units in the same way as iraq did, they have special forces sure like army rangers but they are light airborne units. a tank battalion is a tank battalion as far as the US is concerned.

You can take a coward, give him great training, and as long as he's winning the war at little risk to himself he'll keep fighting. Even if the weapons were the same as what the Iraqi's had, they'd still have lost, but they'd have taken out dozens of tanks.

I feel it was intense in the aspect they gained so much success. With new untested advancements in such a short time. But the argument can be made for WW2. Every 40 years we upgrade how we fight war?
The US didn't have M1A2's at this point in time. The tanks that the US deployed into this war and battle were M1IP's and M1A1's. The first deployment of M1A2's to war was The Iraq war in 2003 if i remember correctly.

Tank battle is an overstatement, it was Barrett M82A1's Vs Muskets. It's sad this war even happened.

military GPS is more accurate than civilian GPS and the GPS system can be forced to low accuracy in a given area so that the military have the advantage in any combat zone.
They have planes on top of them too and military gps uses coordinates

You should talk more about battles and brave soldiers from countries other than the US.
An interesting one could be Brigadier General Avigdor kahalani (Lieutenant Colonel during his most famous battle) who is said to have singlehandedly saved Israel in the Yom Kippur war.
He was in command of an armored Brigade that faced off against far superior numbers of Syrian tanks and troops (50000 troops and 1200 tanks), and despite heavy losses, he managed to reorganize the troops in the area, even rallying in battalions and tanks from other brigades, and managed to overturn a hopeless battle. His tank alone quickly took out 4 enemy tanks from a point-blank range of several tens of meters during the first parts of the battle.
After the war Kahalani received the highest Israeli military decoration, the medal of valor, and the valley in which the battle took place was renamed "Emek Ha-Bacha", ("Valley of the Tears") due to the hundreds of destroyed and abandoned Syrian tanks left there.

George Patton Kursk was still intense. If Germany had encircled the armies in Kursk it would’ve been catastrophic and Germany would have gotten back the initiative
One part you looked over in the Battle of 73 easting, was when M1 Abrams flanked those t-72s, the m1s have automated turrets, while the t72s had manual turrets. So as the American forces flanked them and fired with ease, the Iraqis were in the t72s turning little wheels as fast as they could tryna get on target, but they never did.
I would love to meet and talk to a person who was in the thick of desert storm. To hear their stories and hear about their experiences would be great. I love history and i love warfare knowledge. The M1A1 is and always will be a beautiful piece of machinery that i adore. I saw alot of people who served during operation desert storm were here so thank you all who served. My most sincere respect for all of you.

My father fought in desert storm as a sniper, and my mother worked on missiles that hit the earth, and shot little clusters into the air to take out enemy missile fire. Their best friend was a tanker, and he lost his life to miscommunication. His name was Manuel Davila, and in my hometown of Gillette Wyoming, he has a statue just before the cemetery. You can find his picture outside the gym, of Twin Spruce Junior High. So when I saw this? This reminded me of a history that my father, Manuel, and my mother got to live. May Davila rest in peace, and may you keep bringing joy and wonder to people. Be well.

It's also important to point out that Iraq, while having the 4th largest military in the world does not make it the 4th most powerful, look at North Korea whose military numbers in the over 1.4 million does not compare to many modern military forces such as France or Germany.
You got one small thing wrong. The M1A2 Abram is a newer tank to today. The tank the U.S. was using in the battle of 1973 was the M1A1, the A2 being the upgraded model.

I am sorry, but a single Abrams was knocked out in the battle. After US forces hit 70 Easting, they paused, and that gave a T72 crew a good shot on an Abrams that was illuminated against the sky. The Iraqi tank took the shot, and damaged the Abrams and wounded some of the crew. None were killed, thankfully. Spalling from the CHABRAM armor, not a penetrating shot. Anyway, smoke filled the fighting compartment, and forced the crew to evacuate.

his buddy was in that one tank, thankfully he survived without much injury and they are still good friends today

Read somewhere that the Soviets only gave the Iraqis 125 mm ammunition with half the combat load of full-power ammunition. That was why Iraqi tank fire didn't damage any of those American tanks.
Not sure if it is true, but it's exactly the sort of thing the Soviets would have done- and would explain a lot.
As a major history buff there are definitely inaccuracies in this by far the American training and the thinking of the soldiers is what won this hands down yes technology helps but good soldiers also

I remember watching a documentary about this war. On it they covered a story about how captured Iraqi solder being loaded up in a Bradley asked the Americans why they had a picture of rommel in their vehicle and they replied something along the lines that they respected his strategies and learned from him.
how are you saying that the advantage was for the Iraq, when you literally said that all of Iraqis equipment are really old/ America had brand new technology. You also said that the Iraqi army was out numbered and has been bombarded for days... how on earth did Iraq have the advantage. This is soooooo over dramatic, the Iraq invasion was too easy , also you forgot another thing that the British where with the US. Another thing Iraq operated old SAMs (air defenses), because of the UN embargo on Iraq of the Kuwait war... so Iraq only had old soviet equipment.

While the US main force was relatively untested... it's special forces had spent a decade doing both clandestine operations as well as front page ones like Panama and Grenada. Grenada was like a giant test of modern military combined arms for the US, much like the Falklands were for the British.
