Canada would never allow a hostile force to land. Canada and the USA have the longest peaceful border for a reason, so to get to America from Canada you have to land up north then march all the way south. And of course Canada and US troops would fight the invaders the whole way down. In fact, I guarantee that the Canadian leadership would inform the White House immediately of any bribery attempt. And of course by landing in Canada you just invaded Canada. Canada is a NATO founding member, which means you now have the entirety of NATO after you. Yeah...in regards to the civil population, we've now been at war constantly for 18 years. There are SOOOO many trained combat vets that would be easy to mobilize. Also, our national guard has plenty of combat vets. Add in Federal troops, the fact that the Canadian army is mostly at home and can mobilize to push from the north, and that GB would also have plenty of subs in the Atlantic to be called on...we'd have the threat contained, and possibly eliminated, before our soldiers over seas are even called back. Not only that, but our non ex military civilians with semi auto assault rifles are still usually more trained than other country's military. And, we can do easily pull into our forested, mountain, areas that we could legit attack from any area with militia.

I've been living in the US (Texas) for over 2 decades now. In addition to the mighty military, the US also has a 2nd civilian military that is really well armed (and they practice at least weekly at the gun ranges). People here in Texas don't have guns. They have collections. I recently heard a guy who was looking to buy bullets at a gun store tell the lady at the counter: "Do you have ammo? I am down to 2000 rounds". LOL. In my home country, an entire police station probably does not have 2000 rounds laying around.

@Ralph Goober not once was a sea battle mentioned, because if there was one the US would win, you don't have to beat the Navy to land military forces, you just have to get in and out before they can sink your transports. Given the logistical issues for having air coverage, the likely hood of and invading military having adequate air cover is almost nonexistent. Now given the United States "gun nut" culture, the probability of Texans having a firearm that can handle LAVs and alike is very high, and given the easy a makeshift rocket launcher is to make along with the rocket itself, tanks aren't much of a threat either, not to mention IEDs
This would have been effective defense against conventional warfare in 1940 but nearly 80 years later, we have highly sensitive electrical systems, bombs of unprecedented scales, unbelievably advanced technology, etc, etc, etc. There won't be a rifle behind each blade of grass if the people are starving or worried about chaos. All it takes is 1 cyber failure to shut down just-in-time delivery of food to stores. People would starve in mere days.
Depends how the enemy wants to take the USA i mean do they want intact or destroyed. Because a few nasty biological weapons, well timed strikes here and there and the USA can be crippled like anyone else, the only difference is the pure scale you need. If it as the Earth versus the United States well sheer wight of Numbers and resources would be against the united States. Depends who the USA is fighting as well, you do not need to occupy the mainland to defeat the USA. A war between China and the USA will not end with either side taking over the others mainland. A line of men around my age all the way outside the rest stop. This opened my eyes. There was not one single female or young person. If I was an enemy of America it’s what I would do.
Invading countries would have to worry about more than just the military too. The civilians, Police, Sheriff, State Troopers, Border Patrol, ATF, FBI,CIA and all the other random government agencies.
Another thing is that when invading the US you have to March through the deserts of the of the southwest, the Rocky Mountains, the temperate forests of California, the dense forests of The northeast and northwest, the tundra of Alaska, and the endless plains of the midwest. Burning hot, freezing cold, way to rough, way to open, the topography of the US is just way to incredibly diverse.

About sea ports, Los Angeles/Long Beach are surrounded by mountains. There are only 5 highways out of the region and one goes through USMC Camp Pendleton. There are only 3 main railroad routes into and out of the greater LA Basin. These can all be easily blocked with explosives. The moving inland, there are multiple mountain ranges to get past to go further inland. As for Seattle/Tacoma. they are inland. Not on the ocean. They are on the Puget Sound and invaders would have to go through the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Which would lead the ships right past the main west cost Canadian navel base the around the corner to the main US west coast submarine base. Just sinking a few enemy capital ships would effectively block this port. Mines would be very effective. San Francisco is on the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate is even narrower. Mines would close this off right away. Vancouver is out as it too is inland. Vancouver only has 1 pair of railroad racks going inland and 1 pair going to Seattle. Portland is like 90 miles or so from the ocean. Surrounded by mountains as well. San Diego's port is in a bay and to get to the port facilities requiring taking the main US Navy Base. San Diego is the most militarized place in the USA. Their only chance is to invade by taking a Mexican Port but doing that means they lose the element of surprise. Which they would not have anyway as their 10,000 ship fleet would be spotted by satellite anyway and while at sea I can imagine that nuclear weapons would be authorized. Just not going to happen.

Canada would never allow a hostile force to land. Canada and the USA have the longest peaceful border for a reason, so to get to America from Canada you have to land up north then march all the way south.
