Desert Storm was a textbook modern combined arms warfare plan right out of the book. It was executed against an enemy that didn't know there was a book. A lot of what the Iraqi Army did was like World War One or the interwar years in the twenties. They dug their tanks in making them sitting ducks. You can't just be stationary like that. Iraq only had to look back to 1973 the Yom Kippur War, that would have told him what their fixed fortifications were worth. Some fix fortifications are okay as long as you got a tank and infantry screen around to protect them from direct assault. It's pretty much got to the point now if you can see it you can kill it.
Damn, Outta fuel again (nudge, nudge, wink, wink)! Many of those poor kids don't want to be there either. I think it is possible some of them were lied to & deceived. Remember their's is an authoritarian culture where questioning or refusing orders is not tolerated. "Do what you're told dammit"! Penalties include court martial, prison, & possibly execution. Our troops can refuse an "Unlawful Order."

As Iraqi I know we were going to lose no matter but let me tell you two tanks commanders told me ….. “ we received orders from the high command (saddam) to prepare for exercises …..they didn’t tell us what was blowing the tanks far from us until we knew it was not exercises “
If we (and I include myself because I was a tank commander during Desert Storm) didn’t have GPS to assist us with location and movement, it could have been much worse for the coalition forces. The air campaign decimated a great deal of their armor as well. All that being what it is, the T-72 was not even in the same league as the Abrams, especially in the dark…and it’s DARK in the desert at night, no ambient light for passive IR. Things have changed since then obviously and now thanks are more vulnerable from drones and more advanced anti-tank missiles. Head to head their equipment was not close to ours, but the real differences were tactics and training.
Thanks for that post. I'm surprised there aren't more drone systems being tested in Ukraine. Fund-raising to provide commercial drones to Ukrainian troops doesn't smell right.
Lots of things, really. Saddam did almost everything wrong from a tactics standpoint. Chosing to dig in in defensive positions in wide open desert-immensely foolish.

Desert Storm was a dawn to precision guided munition, from the laser guided bombs to Tomahawk cruise missiles. Next was the stealth. And last but not least - night fighting capability epitomized in night googles and targeting systems on the Apache choppers and Abrams tanks.
Terrific video. As mentioned by Morris, the T-72 is an outdated model, but still remains as the backbone of Russian forces, as the T-90 (basically a T-72 with reactive armor pasted onto it, as well as other more innovative countermeasures against ATMs). Sorry to see that the involvement of the US Cavalry divisions weren't on more display. My dad was at Benning when his 2 Inf Div was integrated to incorporate the First Air Cavalry (Air Mobile). Dad was there, as a green LT, as the flags changed. He eventually became part of 1/7 Cav - Garryowen - and fought in Ia Drang alongside Col. Hal Moore - and a Maj. Norman Schwartzkopf. I mean this literally as my dad was assigned mostly to being a staff officer, but in Ia Drang, everyone showed their ground-pounder heritage. They had to. (Dad was awarded a Bronze Star for his efforts.) The 4th Cav was a spearhead during Desert Storm. This was an armor-heavy battle group, and they used their M1A1s very efficiently. On a side note, I have heard that the main battle zones are now slightly irradiated due to the military's use of depleted uranium sabot rounds. Small cost in the big picture. God bless all of y'all - whatever service branch you call home - for your dedication and willingness to sacrifice. I was never in the military (I did try to apply for the CT Air National Guard, but was aged out; they drive Hogs, my favorite plane - perhaps influenced by my dad being Infantry and relying on loitering, deadly aircraft), but y'all have my utmost respect. My father was a military contractor. His father was a door gunner in the Vietnam war. His father fought in the pacific theater of ww2. His father fought on the western front in ww1. And his father's father fought in the Civil war.
@ Very cool. My maternal grandfather was in the USAAF during WWII, but stationed in DC - given the culture there he may have preferred an airfield in Britain! Following that, not sure what my ancestors did - other than my great-great grandfather, John O'Connell. He was a captain in the Confederate Army and Navy (an engineer), stationed in Mobile. We have a copy of his diary from that time, including his recount of the Battle of Mobile Bay (of "Damn the torpedoes" fame).

T-72 is old & "long in the tooth," but a friend of mine who's a former tanker told me on a good day the T-72 can still be a formidable tank in battle, it depends on how good her crew is. He calls the Abrams the finest main battle tank money can buy.
Germany tank can given it a run for its money, no punt intended, i believe the germanic mbt did better overall in field test (accuracy,speed,reloading) compared to other world mbts-was from a video i saw South America wanting to buy tank contracts , I believe there is a new abrams tank in the field even Israel tanks are competing with usa’s
Yes. It had a decent gun but in a wide open desert with no cover or element of surprise they were sitting ducks. Easy pickins for most of the coalition tanks.
@@steveschmitt6933 Yes, the Leopard is a very good tank, Israeli Merkava is no light weight contender either, she was designed for desert warfare. Russian T-90 a good one & newer T-92 is helluva tank, but I don't think they have a lot of either one (USSR was already dead by the time they went into production.) T-14 Armata could be a serious threat in battle if they ever get the "bugs" out of it. Don't know much of UK, French, or Scandinavian armor. Production capability small, but understand even Ukraine has built some of her own tanks. Thx Steve
The sheer volume of fouled fuel/air/oil/compartment filters during asset recovery was shocking. We certainly made a case study of desert warfare after this little excursion!

i had a coworker who fought in a army tank division in desert storm and 2004 in Iraq. he would mention that the US marines were still using the m60's even that late
The Marines used M60’s in the Gulf War, supplemented by M1’s provided by the Army. I fought in the invasion in the Iraq War in the Army in the 82nd Airborne. By that time the Marines had Abrams as well. We steam rolled to Baghdad in less than 3 weeks.
Yes, my old armor unit@Ft. Knox was still using raggedy old 'Nam Era M-60s in early '80s, some of them FALLING APART! In mornings you could hear new M-1s fire up on other side of base (they meant to do that.)

The T72 is decades older than the M1. Any half-decent 3rd/4th generation MBT can mop the floor with T72s. This is not to say that the T72 was bad for its time. Rather, it speaks for the rapid progression of technology and how large a gap technology can make.
Agreed. But the Soviets were reluctant to add computers into their kit during the Cold War era, because they assumed that these future battles would take place during or after a nuke had been dropped. And they wanted the ability to use their equipment after the EMP from the nukes had fried everyone else's electronics. So they used a lot of analog stuff, mostly hand operated cranks, levers and valves. I can see their line of thought but they should have simply taken precautions to harden their tanks against EMP and gone with computers. Because there is no way those tanks could be used after the end of the Cold War against a modern killer like the Abrams or even the Challenger 1 (once fitted with TOGS). The Battle of 73 Easting proved that. In a pretty bad sand storm they were able to pick out tangos due to the IR. Couple all that with the ability to fire their cannons at a rate of once every four seconds (I believe, I may be wrong) even while advancing on the enemy at 50-60kph and it must have been terrifying for the soldiers of Iraqi armored divisions to see that coming at them. I remember one officer who was there at 73 Easting telling how he saw one of his shots hit a T-72 where it's ordnance was stored and blew the entire turret and what was left of the crew about 75 feet into the air. Thank you to the men and women of the Allied forces that came to Kuwait's aid.
@marcoslaureano5562 Had the T-72 used computers, I can imagine the tank would do better against more modern tanks. Possibly give the Abrams a little bit of a challenge. Of course, this wouldn't change the overall outcome of the war.
What do you mean decades older? It came in service on 1973 and the Abrams came 6 years later... The T72 didn't even reach 5000 units until 1980 and the Abrams already had 1000 units during 1981 and 5000 units during 1985... The T72 ain't that much older... Its technology is just really worse compared to the Abrams..
6:07 just for clarification the us in this was was only using m60a3 tts virsions of the m60 not the m60a1. It looks very similar but has many improvements such as the thermal imaging system and the fire control system, also many had era added on to protect against rpgs. Also the hydraulic fluid was supposed to be replaced because the hydraulic fluid on the earlier model m60s was just too flammable and would end up causing numerous deaths as a result. However when they scrapped the m60a3s they found that a large number of them were still using the old hydraulic fluid. Also the m60a3tts has much better reliability then the previous virsions except for the rise virsion witch is basically a tts but no thermals and worse fire control system.
The mine clearing system is an Egyptian Invention and they shared it with the coalition forces ,also the M1A1 air filter which was Clogging due to the desert sand...the Egyptian engineers found a technology to let the air flows easily and perfectly to the engine...We also have our technologies .
@@teufelhunden3606 yeah, I just did a quick read on mine clearing techniques, and many were worked on by the British during WW2. The Americans used a line charge system which they had in use back in the late 80's - well before ever before deploying to the Gulf.

I think thats the plan. They want to be a quick strike force and heavy weaponry doesnt meet that philosophy. Or they may just use IFVs. They are getting to be almost as good as tanks and are much faster and less maintainence
I know they still use Stryker I think & or the Bradley fighting vehicle, but never did like them things (Bradley). I felt they were death traps. We lost several soldiers in Europe. They drowned when they couldn't get out of it.
The Marines think and are planning that the next war they will be fighting will be in the Pacific. The Abrams is a fine tank, the problem with it is that it weighs 70 tons. To heavy for what they need and then what you need in support to keep one running.
I think the Marines are trying to go back to being an amphibious force. They're looking for hardware that's fast, small, and deadly. The Abrams wouldn't fit that change.
The general said "there isn't a tank in the world that is close to being equal to the M1 for armour or firepower". What about the Challenger 2, both have the same "Chobham" armour. Developed in the UK. Both have the same calibre main gun. 120mm. Only difference being the M1 is smoothbore, the Challenger is rifled. Both excellent.

Desert Storm was the greatest display of a new and ground breaking military technology in history. Many technologies peaked and matured by 1991 and were tested on the battlefield. From the precision guided munition to night vision to stealth to anti missile technology (OK that last one is maybe not the greatest example given the performance of Patriot system against Iraqi Scud missiles). I don't think we will have a major conflict, in the near to mid term, that would test out so many new weapon systems in the real combat scenarios. Some of the so called "superpowers" are actually reversing the time and reverting to using tactics and weapons that are so low tech that they could be misinterpreted as the ones used in the mid 20th century. Of course I'm referring to Russia in Ukraine and their ancient way of conducting warfare with massive artillery barrages that target civilian targets and weapons that were pioneered in 1920s.. From the T-62 MBTs to unguided artillery and especially dumb bombs dropped from aircraft with tactics not much different from the ones used by the USAF in Vietnam .
Its because they are broke and have invested most of their resources into missile defense systems against us aircraft. A perfect example is their Su-57 stealth fighter. They made it 12 years ago and they produced 16 of them.

It is true that the iraqi had much worse tanks and ammo, you can't deny a fact. However, I still believe the Abrams to be superior in almost all aspects. The T72 and variants aren't garbage either. Edit: Also, some rounds did hit the Abrams, but because the rounds were ancient, they could not penetrate most of the tank. modern rounds at the time would've had a better chance.
Until the M1A1 met the Russian Kornet 9M 133 Anti tank missile in the 2003 WAR of SILLY EXCUSES. The damn small thing was so lethal that the US Army specifically told Marine Corps Armoured Fighting Vehicle crews to hunt down the Iraqi missile teams!
m1 abrams is an impressive tank. A deadly force on the battlefield. Full stop. As for the T-72s on the battlefield in iraq, they weren't the ones the soviets used. The soviet gave a very downgraded version of their tanks. This was discovered after the soviet union ended. Thus which tank is truly better. No one knows. Both are impressive that is for sure.
Tank warfare is being rewritten in Spring 2022. Drones and handheld missiles are wrecking havoc on armored columns. Apache helicopters and A10s can finish off anything that's left. But tanks still have psychological and political value. Think of it as football, you can have wide receivers, halfbacks, tight ends, and trick plays - but if you run a fullback right up the gut and gain 12 yards every play, the opposing team feels defeated. And on the battlefield, low morale is the beginning of the end.
Many have said Tanks are dead. I disagree. Whenever something is said to be dead, remember how many counters to such a weapon are still in use and being developed. When you look at it this way, the tank seems very much alive.
T72m1 was originally a tad worse than t72a. T72b3m is based on T72B, which had better protection because different armor array. B3 gave it some new electronics and sights, plus kontakt 5 everywhere which degrades kenetic pen by around 15%. Still, western tanks are better in every aspect. This also means underneath all the addons, the b3m is just a t72b in terms of protection.
21:50 This showed the poor quality of the Iraqi Army Staff officers. Obvious that they did not have a handle on what was going on with the forces they had planned to use in the attack. Starting the offensive with 2 out of 3 of the Divisions missing is effing stupid. Starting the battle piecemeal in an uncoordinated approach is unintelligent.

The Soviets in WW2 dug themselves in including tanks in hull down positions….. not successful in the sense that this presented an unassailable fortification, but successful in impeding the impetus of German offensive action and serving to make gains costly. Defeating German attacks still reliant on a successful counter attack. Just getting through minefield’s at Kursk proved very costly.
Makes sense....to attack an enemy from where they can't attack you back. The Iraqi tanks still stood no chance against the more modern Abrams. As evident from the few tank battles that did happen.
For the role it is supposed to fulfill, the merkava is 100% better than the Abrams, however it is nowhere near as flexible and adaptable as the Abrams, since it was purpose designed as a defensive vehicle with an extremely high emphasis on crew survivability, purpose built with Israeli situations and terrain in mind.

Well, the M1A1 Abrams is among the best tanks in the world, sure - but the British Challenger, French LeClerc, German Leopard etc. are up there as well (and much lighter, less fuel consuming, less loud, less finicky (the Abram's Engine is a diva, as in it needs a lot of maintenance and can still act up when you don't need it - a Leopard has a much more reliable diesel-engine, instead of the gas-turbine!))

Don’t start none, won’t be none. I say that with a bit of tongue in cheek, as my country, the USA, is grossly over-involved in world affairs. On a related note, how awesome would it be for our government to suspend ALL foreign aid and non-ESSENTIAL military spending for 1 month, take that money, and divide it among the American public, I mean, since it is OUR money anyway. I would be okay with a few days less a month of fighter jet practice flying, for example. It would save literally millions of dollars each year and affect our combat readiness by about 0%. @ Very cool. My maternal grandfather was in the USAAF during WWII, but stationed in DC - given the culture there he may have preferred an airfield in Britain! Following that, not sure what my ancestors did - other than my great-great grandfather, John O'Connell. He was a captain in the Confederate Army and Navy (an engineer), stationed in Mobile. We have a copy of his diary from that time, including his recount of the Battle of Mobile Bay (of "Damn the torpedoes" fame).

T-72 is old & "long in the tooth," but a friend of mine who's a former tanker told me on a good day the T-72 can still be a formidable tank in battle, it depends on how good her crew is. He calls the Abrams the finest main battle tank money can buy.

Yes. It had a decent gun but in a wide open desert with no cover or element of surprise they were sitting ducks. Easy pickins for most of the coalition tanks.
@@steveschmitt6933 Yes, the Leopard is a very good tank, Israeli Merkava is no light weight contender either, she was designed for desert warfare. Russian T-90 a good one & newer T-92 is helluva tank, but I don't think they have a lot of either one (USSR was already dead by the time they went into production.) T-14 Armata could be a serious threat in battle if they ever get the "bugs" out of it. Don't know much of UK, French, or Scandinavian armor. Production capability small, but understand even Ukraine has built some of her own tanks. Thx Steve

The sheer volume of fouled fuel/air/oil/compartment filters during asset recovery was shocking. We certainly made a case study of desert warfare after this little excursion!

Their airforce was destroyed by the coalition before the ground force of the coalition even set foot in Kuwait.

i had a coworker who fought in a army tank division in desert storm and 2004 in Iraq. he would mention that the US marines were still using the m60's even that late
The Marines used M60’s in the Gulf War, supplemented by M1’s provided by the Army. I fought in the invasion in the Iraq War in the Army in the 82nd Airborne. By that time the Marines had Abrams as well. We steam rolled to Baghdad in less than 3 weeks.
Even in Desert Storm, Marines in M60s overmatched the Iraqis.......Marines were trained as well as any Western nation's tank corps.
Yes, my old armor unit@Ft. Knox was still using raggedy old 'Nam Era M-60s in early '80s, some of them FALLING APART! In mornings you could hear new M-1s fire up on other side of base (they meant to do that.)

The T72 is decades older than the M1. Any half-decent 3rd/4th generation MBT can mop the floor with T72s. This is not to say that the T72 was bad for its time. Rather, it speaks for the rapid progression of technology and how large a gap technology can make.

But the Soviets were reluctant to add computers into their kit during the Cold War era, because they assumed that these future battles would take place during or after a nuke had been dropped. And they wanted the ability to use their equipment after the EMP from the nukes had fried everyone else's electronics. So they used a lot of analog stuff, mostly hand operated cranks, levers and valves. I can see their line of thought but they should have simply taken precautions to harden their tanks against EMP and gone with computers. Because there is no way those tanks could be used after the end of the Cold War against a modern killer like the Abrams or even the Challenger 1 (once fitted with TOGS). The Battle of 73 Easting proved that. In a pretty bad sand storm they were able to pick out tangos due to the IR. Couple all that with the ability to fire their cannons at a rate of once every four seconds (I believe, I may be wrong) even while advancing on the enemy at 50-60kph and it must have been terrifying for the soldiers of Iraqi armored divisions to see that coming at them. I remember one officer who was there at 73 Easting telling how he saw one of his shots hit a T-72 where it's ordnance was stored and blew the entire turret and what was left of the crew about 75 feet into the air. Thank you to the men and women of the Allied forces that came to Kuwait's aid.

What do you mean decades older? It came in service on 1973 and the Abrams came 6 years later... The T72 didn't even reach 5000 units until 1980 and the Abrams already had 1000 units during 1981 and 5000 units during 1985... The T72 ain't that much older... Its technology is just really worse compared to the Abrams..
6:07 just for clarification the us in this was was only using m60a3 tts virsions of the m60 not the m60a1. It looks very similar but has many improvements such as the thermal imaging system and the fire control system, also many had era added on to protect against rpgs. Also the hydraulic fluid was supposed to be replaced because the hydraulic fluid on the earlier model m60s was just too flammable and would end up causing numerous deaths as a result. However when they scrapped the m60a3s they found that a large number of them were still using the old hydraulic fluid. Also the m60a3tts has much better reliability then the previous virsions except for the rise virsion witch is basically a tts but no thermals and worse fire control system.
The mine clearing system is an Egyptian Invention and they shared it with the coalition forces ,also the M1A1 air filter which was Clogging due to the desert sand...the Egyptian engineers found a technology to let the air flows easily and perfectly to the engine...We also have our technologies .
Pretty sure it was the Germans in ww2 who created it.
@@teufelhunden3606 yeah, I just did a quick read on mine clearing techniques, and many were worked on by the British during WW2. The Americans used a line charge system which they had in use back in the late 80's - well before ever before deploying to the Gulf.

I think thats the plan. They want to be a quick strike force and heavy weaponry doesnt meet that philosophy. Or they may just use IFVs. They are getting to be almost as good as tanks and are much faster and less maintainence
I know they still use Stryker I think & or the Bradley fighting vehicle, but never did like them things (Bradley). I felt they were death traps. We lost several soldiers in Europe. They drowned when they couldn't get out of it.
The Marines think and are planning that the next war they will be fighting will be in the Pacific. The Abrams is a fine tank, the problem with it is that it weighs 70 tons. To heavy for what they need and then what you need in support to keep one running.
I think the Marines are trying to go back to being an amphibious force. They're looking for hardware that's fast, small, and deadly. The Abrams wouldn't fit that change.
The general said "there isn't a tank in the world that is close to being equal to the M1 for armour or firepower". What about the Challenger 2, both have the same "Chobham" armour. Developed in the UK.
Both have the same calibre main gun. 120mm. Only difference being the M1 is smoothbore, the Challenger is rifled.

Desert Storm was the greatest display of a new and ground breaking military technology in history. Many technologies peaked and matured by 1991 and were tested on the battlefield. From the precision guided munition to night vision to stealth to anti missile technology (OK that last one is maybe not the greatest example given the performance of Patriot system against Iraqi Scud missiles).
I don't think we will have a major conflict, in the near to mid term, that would test out so many new weapon systems in the real combat scenarios. Some of the so called "superpowers" are actually reversing the time and reverting to using tactics and weapons that are so low tech that they could be misinterpreted as the ones used in the mid 20th century. Of course I'm referring to Russia in Ukraine and their ancient way of conducting warfare with massive artillery barrages that target civilian targets and weapons that were pioneered in 1920s.. From the T-62 MBTs to unguided artillery and especially dumb bombs dropped from aircraft with tactics not much different from the ones used by the USAF in Vietnam .

It is true that the iraqi had much worse tanks and ammo, you can't deny a fact. However, I still believe the Abrams to be superior in almost all aspects. The T72 and variants aren't garbage either.
Edit: Also, some rounds did hit the Abrams, but because the rounds were ancient, they could not penetrate most of the tank. modern rounds at the time would've had a better chance.

Until the M1A1 met the Russian Kornet 9M 133 Anti tank missile in the 2003 WAR of SILLY EXCUSES. The damn small thing was so lethal that the US Army specifically told Marine Corps Armoured Fighting Vehicle crews to hunt down the Iraqi missile teams!
m1 abrams is an impressive tank. A deadly force on the battlefield. Full stop. As for the T-72s on the battlefield in iraq, they weren't the ones the soviets used. The soviet gave a very downgraded version of their tanks. This was discovered after the soviet union ended. Thus which tank is truly better. No one knows. Both are impressive that is for sure.

Tank warfare is being rewritten in Spring 2022. Drones and handheld missiles are wrecking havoc on armored columns. Apache helicopters and A10s can finish off anything that's left. But tanks still have psychological and political value. Think of it as football, you can have wide receivers, halfbacks, tight ends, and trick plays - but if you run a fullback right up the gut and gain 12 yards every play, the opposing team feels defeated. And on the battlefield, low morale is the beginning of the end.
Many have said Tanks are dead. I disagree. Whenever something is said to be dead, remember how many counters to such a weapon are still in use and being developed. When you look at it this way, the tank seems very much alive.

There is a major difference between a T-72m, which was vastly inferior to the tanks the Soviets used at the time, and the vastly more modern T-72b3m.
T72m1 was originally a tad worse than t72a. T72b3m is based on T72B, which had better protection because different armor array. B3 gave it some new electronics and sights, plus kontakt 5 everywhere which degrades kenetic pen by around 15%. Still, western tanks are better in every aspect. This also means underneath all the addons, the b3m is just a t72b in terms of protection.
21:50 This showed the poor quality of the Iraqi Army Staff officers. Obvious that they did not have a handle on what was going on with the forces they had planned to use in the attack. Starting the offensive with 2 out of 3 of the Divisions missing is effing stupid. Starting the battle piecemeal in an uncoordinated approach is unintelligent.

The Soviets in WW2 dug themselves in including tanks in hull down positions….. not successful in the sense that this presented an unassailable fortification, but successful in impeding the impetus of German offensive action and serving to make gains costly. Defeating German attacks still reliant on a successful counter attack. Just getting through minefield’s at Kursk proved very costly.
That war was an overkill. Satellites alone can alter the outcome. A minimal force of air-land force can eliminate the dug-in Iraqi defense.

For the role it is supposed to fulfill, the merkava is 100% better than the Abrams, however it is nowhere near as flexible and adaptable as the Abrams, since it was purpose designed as a defensive vehicle with an extremely high emphasis on crew survivability, purpose built with Israeli situations and terrain in mind.

Well, the M1A1 Abrams is among the best tanks in the world, sure - but the British Challenger, French LeClerc, German Leopard etc. are up there as well (and much lighter, less fuel consuming, less loud, less finicky (the Abram's Engine is a diva, as in it needs a lot of maintenance and can still act up when you don't need it - a Leopard has a much more reliable diesel-engine, instead of the gas-turbine!))

Don’t start none, won’t be none. I say that with a bit of tongue in cheek, as my country, the USA, is grossly over-involved in world affairs. On a related note, how awesome would it be for our government to suspend ALL foreign aid and non-ESSENTIAL military spending for 1 month, take that money, and divide it among the American public, I mean, since it is OUR money anyway. I would be okay with a few days less a month of fighter jet practice flying, for example. It would save literally millions of dollars each year and affect our combat readiness by about 0%.
