The very first "Gunship" was the XB-25G, later named B-25G beginning service in WWII. A modified B-25 Mitchell Bomber with a nose-mounted 75mm M4 Sherman Cannon. Designated for use against the Japanese ships in the Pacific and was deployed in 1943. It was highly successful and could engage enemy targets as far away as 2 miles, and could still carry its normal bomb payload or a Torpedo, with some models even having wing-mounted Rockets. The Navigation section was greatly reduced to fit 21 75mm Rounds. During a single bombing run, the B-25G could let loose 4 rounds into the intended target destroying smaller ships with a single round and severely damage larger warships. Later in the war, an even more modified variant came out. The B-25H. It replaced the 75mm Sherman Cannon with the lightweight, thin barreled T13E1 Cannon which fired the same caliber shells but had a quicker and more reliable reloading mechanism. On top of that, they also mounted 2 more nose mounted .50 Cal machine guns, which were controlled by the pilot. A total of 1 75mm a 4 .50 Cal guns in the nose of the aircraft alone. The B-25G was also used in the Mediterranean and European theater as a flying tank destroyer but didn't have nearly the strong impact as it did on Japanese ships in the Pacific. Late in the war, the 75mm gun was running out of targets, either too few targets or too strong targets, so they modified the B-25 yet again with 6 nose mounted .50 cal guns and converted it back into a ground support role aircraft.
The story of The First Gunship.
How long did this take to type out¿ but thanks for the info
@@EQUXXR Actually, not that long lol. Some were from my memory and some were from a couple combat airplane books I had lying around.
not Sure i would define the XB-25G as a gunship , I think the pylon turn is required or in order to call it that , v cool aircraft regardless
The Lockheed AC-130 gunship is a heavily armed, long-endurance, ground-attack variant of the C-130 Hercules transport, fixed-wing aircraft. It carries a wide array of ground-attack weapons that are integrated with sophisticated sensors, navigation, and fire-control systems. Unlike other modern military fixed-wing aircraft, the AC-130 relies on visual targeting. Because its large profile and low operating altitudes around 7,000 feet (2,100 m) make it an easy target, its close air support missions are usually flown at night. The airframe is manufactured by Lockheed Martin, while Boeing is responsible for the conversion into a gunship and for aircraft support.[7] Developed during the Vietnam War as "Project Gunship II", the AC-130 replaced the Douglas AC-47 Spooky, or "Gunship I". The sole operator is the United States Air Force, which uses the AC-130U Spooky and AC-130W Stinger II[8] variants for close air support, air interdiction, and force protection, with the upgraded AC-130J Ghostrider entering service.[9] Close air support roles include supporting ground troops, escorting convoys, and urban operations. Air-interdiction missions are conducted against planned targets and targets of opportunity. Force-protection missions include defending air bases and other facilities. AC-130Us are based at Hurlburt Field, Florida, while AC-130Ws are based at Cannon AFB, New Mexico; gunships can be deployed worldwide.[10] The squadrons are part of the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), a component of the United States Special Operations Command.[11]
The AC-130 has an unpressurized cabin, with the weaponry mounted to fire from the port side of the fuselage. During an attack, the gunship performs a pylon turn, flying in a large circle around the target, therefore being able to fire at it for far longer than in a conventional strafing attack. The AC-130H Spectre was armed with two 20 mm M61 Vulcan cannons, one L60 Bofors 40 mm cannon, and M137 105 mm cannon and M37 recoil mechanism from the M102 howitzer; after 1994, the 20 mm cannons were removed. The upgraded AC-130U Spooky has a single 25 mm GAU-12 Equalizer cannon in place of the Spectre's two 20 mm cannons, an improved fire-control system, and increased ammunition capacity. The new AC-130J was based on the MC-130J Commando II special-operations tanker. The AC-130W Stinger II is a modified C-130H with upgrades including a precision strike package.

And now also comes armed with missiles for longer range and badder punch!
6:15 It should be "bank left" because all the guns are on the left side and not the right side. And the reason is that because the pilot sits on the left side so it's easier for him to do a left pylon turn.
6:35 There is no gun on both sides. Only guns on left side! You can maybe try to drop some missiles or bombs although i am still not sure if the sensor arch would cover much or any of the right side to allow for targeting anything on the right anyway.

Live near the airbase in Schenectady NY and twice a year all the polar AC-130s are flying back home or flying off to Antarctica. They are equipped with massive skis on all the landing gear which measure about 10-20 feet long each. It’s very common to also see the non-polar LC-130s running drills and performing steep banked turns right over our house. Gotten so used to them that you hardly even notice these absolutely massive and loud aircraft rumble I’ve tryout heads every so odd day.

As a Spetsnaz commander once said “ENEMY AC-130 ABOVE”
Extremely loudly too
The AC-130 actually banks to the left because it only has the guns on the left side, not both sides because then it would be too heavy. So that means that it doesn't bank to the right because it would be shooting into the air, so that means waisting ammunition, unless firing at an enemy aircraft, which is very unlikely.
