      Kristen McGowan this is amazing! We just moved to our first house together and one of the bathrooms floors is really damaged. I think this would be the solution!!
      The only thing I wander is: what to do if the tiles are bigger or smaller than the stickers? Would it be a hassle?

    As an FYI, I used contact paper to repair a countertop in the house I am renting. I used a marble type as well and then put a coat of Varathane Clear finish over it to waterproof. Three years later, it is still holding up exceptionally well. I would DEFINITELY recommend putting that waterproof finish on it as it is a bathroom and damp.

      how will you remove it when you move out if you put a clear finish over it? As in how hard would the removal process be? I'm considering it but my concerns initially lied with the fact that it may not be 100% waterproof, so the idea of using a clear finish is great, but now i have another concern, which is removing the contact paper after moving out

    • @DM-Canada
      @DM-Canada 4 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      @@Beyondzz In all fairness, this was a counter repair -- the landlord didn't support the front part of the counter (the part that curls over from the top to the front) and the kids cracked it while cleaning the mirror. He started having a bit of a "hissy fit" over it (he is difficult like that, but hates paying for any real repairs) so I fixed it myself. I put wood behind to support the "curl over" and patched it. Then I covered the counter with a VERY similar looking "Contact" paper. I don't plan on removing it. But, from experience, it will still come off if you want it to. The "glue" underneath is still the same and it was only two coats of "waterproofing" so it is a bit stiffer but still "liftable". My suggestion would be to take a small piece and try it in an inconspicuous spot and test it. If I get a chance, I will check myself for you. Most of the time, if it is a good improvement, landlords really don't care. If it is outlandish, then they get more difficult.

    This is a gorgeous makeover, what a sweet thing to do for your parents! However...
    Those cabinets and faucets are not builder grade from the 90's. I just moved into a 90's house with all the builder grade finishes, still, and the bathroom faucets are all chrome with the awful plastic crystal knob in the middle. Brushed nickel became popular enough to be builder grade in the 2000's. And cabinets that detailed are definitely above builder grade.

    I suggest that you update the towel bar on the wall when you fix the light in the future. Also a tip for the built in wall shelf, IKEA sells some small "pluggs" that are made out of plastic that you use to fill holes on adjustable shelves. It would look really good if the holes were less visible. I have them in my open wardrobe and it just takes it to a new level!

When I paint, (and I painted every room in my old house at least three times, so I know what I am doing) my room(s), hallway and I all look like one of those funny memes of what happens when Dad is home alone caring for the toddlers- the house has been covered in paint, makeup and/or flour./cocoa, whatever else ~Lol. Well done!

    @vociferonheraldofthewinter2284 4 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    For renters: If the contact paper or stick-on tiles leave a sticky residue (the tiles are notorious for this after they've had time to really set up) you can try a product called 'goo gone.' You remove the tile or as much of the paper that you can, then apply the goo gone, let it rest for a few minutes, and gently scrape it off with a cheap, plastic scraper.
    PLEASE do a test spot somewhere it's not obvious before doing the whole thing and make sure it doesn't react with whatever you're removing the sticky from.
    If the goo gone is too rough for your surface, rubbing alcohol works, too. Just buy a ton of the stuff. (You can get a gallon for very cheap at any farm and feed store.) Put soaked paper towels over your sticky parts and leave it for a good hour. Don't let it dry or the sticky will dry back on.
    Also, here's a protip. If you paint the back of your cabinet doors, it really does give a more finished, professional look. It's the big difference between amateur and pro and people will notice if it's done or not. It's so worth the little bit of extra work. Just paint the backs before the fronts so your fronts are absolutely perfect when you're finished.
    Love the makeover. Absolutely HUGE difference!

      Vociferon Herald of the Winter Mist plain oil, like for cooking, is safer. Than wash residue off with Dawn.

    • @vociferonheraldofthewinter2284
      @vociferonheraldofthewinter2284 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jade_902 I've done the oil trick and it does work (as does mayo), but - for this - you have to let it sit for two straight days to do the job. For many people this isn't realistic. Especially if they have children or pets.
      Those 'peel and stick' tiles aren't as 'renter friendly' as people think. Once that adhesive sets, it's not coming off easily if you prepped your surface right.

    • @sandyyoung863
      @sandyyoung863 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vociferon Herald of the Winter Mist Have you used these tiles before? We plan on retiling the entrance area in the future, but it’s lower on the lust of projects. Looking for a short-term fix until we can get to it. Will they last, say, a year, maybe two? Do the edges come up, get dirty?

    • @vociferonheraldofthewinter2284
      @vociferonheraldofthewinter2284 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sandyyoung863 (sorry this is so long. i don't know exactly what your situation is so I'm just going to tell you everything)
      I helped my uncle install this in the houses he built back in the 80's and 90's and I've experimented with them for a variety of projects over the years. They'll last if you install them right and your underlayment isn't porous.
      New, clean concrete that's very smooth can work as can wood floors and old linoleum. Rough, crude concrete that's very dirty isn't a good option. Ceramic tile and stone doesn't hold it as well. The grout lines are weak points and once that area starts to weaken it's only a matter of time before the rest goes. These don't stick well to OSB or plywood. Raw, unsealed wood is hit or miss. I think it has something to do with the natural oils in the wood and how smooth the surface has (or hasn't) been milled. If I'm trying to stick tile onto wood for a craft project (say, dollhouse flooring) I always put a coat of poly on first, no matter how smooth the wood is.
      You want to clean your floors with TSP. You can find this powder at Walmart or any hardware store. It removes oils and grease residue and is used to prep surfaces for paint or tile or anything that has to stick. I don't see anyone having trouble finding TSP, but - if you do - cleaning with straight rubbing alcohol will do the same thing.
      When people pay to have things like this installed professionally the pros have these extremely heavy rollers they roll over the tile to really get it to stick. You need to be serious about pushing it down once you get it in place. Don't rush that part or it will get loose over time. I have had success by going over the tile with a rolling pin, then putting a piece of wood over the tile, then weighing it down with my husband's weights and leaving that to set while I place the next tile. I use 4 twenty pound weights and am careful to weigh the edges. Then a second application of the rolling pin. before moving on.
      The small, individual tiles are intended to be installed by the homeowner. It's adhesive comes already on the tile, isn't as aggressive as the professional stuff, and it has a slower curing time. The curing takes place over weeks or even months. The longer it sets, the more permanent the bond.
      That's why I cringe when people call it 'renter friendly.' Well, yeah. If you only have it down for a month or so. But if you've prepped well and worked hard to push it down, it won't come up without a chisel and and will ruin whatever is underneath it when you try. I've fought with old peel and stick tiles when helping my friend with house flipping and it was a nightmare. Had to learn to leave it.
      I have two recommendations. 1. Buy at least mid-level quality. The stiff I've messed with at Home Depot doesn't have the greatest adhesive and is hit or miss. But keep in mind that the higher quality adhesive won't allow you to reposition easily (if at all). 2. Plan on leaving it down and putting the new flooring over it. This works great underneath wood or laminate flooring.
      And please find *professional* installation videos. The newby DIYer's miss a lot of important steps and put out misinformation. (Bless their hearts, I had to learn, too!!)

    I did peel and stick flooring and honestly after a couple of days, the water from everyone showering made the stickyness go away quickly and the tiles starting coming apart noticeably, I would constantly have to slide them back together until i ended up just throwing a rug over the bad ones, after a few weeks i just pulled it up and the smell was horific! They are pretty though and i’m pretty sure if you use tile glue or something to make it more sticky it would be great for a long time. Also make sure someone that is good at measuring and cutting for odd spaces! We made that mistake too..
