      Oh yes, you're so right! The rambling on...I used to love watching furniture upcycling videos (now I don't watch them anymore because I know what I'm doing 😅). My favourite TH-camr would post usually 13-15 minutes tutorials, short, sweet and to the point, while others would talk and talk and blab and blab for 45 minutes and more, while showing us how to upcycle a small piece of furniture 😂 I hated this verbal diarrhea. Why do some folks love to hear themselves talk so much 🤔 😊

    Bathroom mirror frame - paint the back of the wood frame black before mounting so you don't see the reflection of the raw wood in the mirror. Also, clear silicone caulk across the bottom against the mirror so water doesn't splash and leak behind the wood, which can discolor the wood or even cause it to mold. Otherwise, great tip. We did this in three bathroom remodels. For about $25, you can create a mirror that looks like it cost $100s.

      I can’t bear the idea of painting over solid wood. Seems like such a waste. I was told by my realtor to update my solid maple cabinets before putting my house on the market. Couldn’t do it!

    • @rochellet7303
      @rochellet7303 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Toinette - same here. Ours are maple, but I'm concerned after painting them they will chip easily? What is your experience, or recommendation for how you sealed them so they stay protected and looking fresh? Approx cost? Thanks!

    • @Toinette2883
      @Toinette2883 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I was concerned about that too that’s why I had them professionally done. I had too many cabinets to tackle this myself. It’s been a year now and they’ve help up great! Price is all based on number of drawers and doors. So it varies with every kitchen. Never have regretted it.

      @@BunnyViva Haha I get it. Re-staining would be even more time consuming/expensive so I was considering paint. Of course, at the time, I selected the "upgraded" extra molding and detail, corbels, etc. which was waaay more expensive, and now they look waaay more dated. 😂

    ....Depending on where one lives, the " heavy draperies or curtains " are often necessary.... especially in area where it snows, and such . ... these help insulate the home and save on heating costs. I used cream coloured velvet ( but washable velvet ) drapes and it made a huge difference.

    I painted our pink tiled (can you imagine) fireplace surround black. It was a terrific one-step primer-built-in paint and made a world of difference. We painted the stair railing from a dated oak finish to white, but I think the railing needs to be black, similar to the look you gave your parents' staircase. Next project!

    I actually used flat latex wall paint on the bricks around my fireplace 25 years ago, still looks fine and yes, we used the fireplace for wood fires. I removed old valances and heavy pinch pleated drapes- such a difference when replaced with simple IKEA curtains hung wide so the whole window was visible when the curtains were open. Sooo much more light in a room that needed it.

    You didn't mention the update I was waiting for - lighting. We need to sell my parents' single-story home, and the lighting was extremely dated. For only about $600, I re-did most of the lighting. It really brightened a lot of the rooms, and brought them 30 - 40 years forward in time. Realtor friends told us we would more than recover the cost of those upgrades on the sale.

    Thanks for showing that tip about framing out the bathroom mirror- I have been wondering to myself if it’s something I could do with mine, it was great to actually see someone executing it! It looks so cute and will definitely be an economical fix till we gut that bathroom and spend the big bucks!

    Great tips! I realize that I’ve done most of these. During the pandemic, I pulled out the carpets in my bedrooms and stained the concrete slab and put area rugs over it to soften the space. I also ordered frames from Mirror Mate to frame out the large contractor grade bathroom mirrors.

    Refinishing wood floors under carpet is NOT super affordable 😂. And as a DIY it’s probably one of the harder projects we’ve ever taken on and I’ve redone the plaster work on a coved ceiling by myself. It’s worth it, but it’s a big job to do it right.

    • @CheriJ11
      @CheriJ11 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I agree. I found it difficult to even cut the carpet to take it up. But refinishing wood floors is a labor-intensive, messy, tough job. It can be done; just know that it takes quite a bit of time and effort.

    I've been a subscriber for a year or two, and I just wanted to tell you that while I'll "go with" you to IKEA, Target and Home Goods any time, this video is the most useful and inspiring one I've seen. So thanks for reminding me that there are things I can do on my own to wake this house up a bit.
    If possible, I'd love to see you address the, I don't know what to call it, separation of, in my case, the living room and dining room. There's no molding or decorative arch, it's as though it was a wall and someone cut and framed out a big square leaving 12 or so inches of wall at the top, continued baseboard around it, and voila, it's 2 rooms, kind of. If possible, I'd have a carpenter frame out the corners, doing whatever is needed to turn it into an arch, but $$$
    I've just given up on all of our windows with no ledge; I'm sure it's so much easier/cheaper to frame it out, put the window in, and slap some molding around it. The suburbs of the 1990's aren't known for architectural interest, lol.
    My apologies for going on so, apparently I had a lot to say 😁

    For adding trim to walls or doors, could you paint just the trim the same color as the wall and then affix to the wall/door? Or would you have to mount it and repaint the whole wall?

    • @FisherCatProductions
      @FisherCatProductions ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You might get away with it, but you may have unsightly gaps between the trim and the surface. Those gaps are usually filled in with caulk when installing, or with paint if they are very fine joints. And you will have to spackle any nail holes in your trim anyways, and trying to blend them in with dabs of paint...tacky.

    In my opinion, a housing market crash is imminent due to the high number of individuals who purchased homes above the asking price despite the low interest rates. These buyers find themselves in precarious situations as housing prices decline, leaving them without any equity. If they become unable to afford their homes, foreclosure becomes a likely outcome. Even attempting to sell would not yield any profits. This scenario is expected to impact a significant number of people, particularly in light of the anticipated surge in layoffs and the rapid increase in the cost of living.

      Ugh, you overlooekd the fact that the "overasked" homes purchasers were all from out of town. Big city residents looking to relocate to much cheaper area and work remotely. So that 300K asking in sub-rub Georgia that went for 350K bought by someone from NYC is no big deal at all for the NYC-er.

      We were between a rock and a hard place a year ago because our landlord wanted us to buy her house or agree to pay a much higher amount of rent. The sellers are taking advantage of the fact that there isn't enough house inventory and we purchased for more than what the house is worth. I don't think this should be legal.

    I have 70’s rock fireplace. Everything in my home has been updated and I am looking at options for it. Have you ever painted a rock fireplace or even just lightened it a bit? The mortar is black. Perhaps just painting the mortar grey would upgrade it. Any ideas?

    So many great ideas. I did the bathroom mirror trim on my old house and it was an improvement. I also renovated my kitchen with some Tuscan stone wall tiles.

    Oak or cherry wood is beautiful and timeless plus not everybody cares for the painted look, but if you want to tame it you don't need to paint them necessarily. Just by picking a color that compliments them, that will tone down the tones especially if the paint is a blue, green or earthy tones with no orange, yellow or red undertones in it.
    I exhort you and other TH-camrs to stop promoting that this type of wood is outdated as it promotes waste and unnecessary stress on the owner.

    • @queenie2668
      @queenie2668 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Doesn't matter how you tone down it still looks old and tired. Not everybody like antique neither. People can have own preference and have rights to do whatever they like with their houses.

    • @vaderladyl

      @@queenie2668 No not really. Only people with no imagination don't know what to do and snooty so called designers. Besides, my point is that precisely, pick what you want, not what others tell you to pick because they say it is outdated. And they need to stop dissing other colors of wood because they are all nice. So your point is moot.

      I so agree with you. I am tired of being made to feel my house is not enough because I may not go with the latest fad. Beautiful rich wood probably should not be painted whether it is furniture or trim. I still love and use those wonderful pieces of furniture from Council Craftsman, Ethan Allen, Thomasville, So unlike the generic chunky furniture today that will never be a family heirloom.
