I’m in the process of doing exactly this. I’m disabled so it’s taking me a long time but the difference is incredible! Your parents are lucky to have you! Blessings to you and your family!
I hear that - me too! And it does take a while for me too but nice to have a reason to get up in the morning too and not break the bank unlike ANY other DIY I do where I have to go to store 6 times and I spend 10-100 every darn time. Thanks for making this easy - great to find a cabinet reface that has thick prime and doesn't have to be bloody sanded!
What a great makeover! 2 suggestions- the coffee cart looks great, just needs to be painted- either white to be part of the cabinets or black. And the plant on top of the cabinets...keep in mind it will dry out fast..heat rises. To avoid having to climb up there so often.. put plant in pretty pot run a long length of yarn, cord or rope from the middle of the potting soil through the drain hole. then find a 9x13 cake pan with a lid.. cut 2 holes- set the pot on top of lid & run cord through a center hole.. then have a 2nd hole big enough for a watering can spout.. fill the cake pan with water..the plant will suck up water as needed. You will have to experiment how long it takes to use a whole pan of water. Should be at least a few weeks. Oh, another tip..lay wax paper across the whole top of the cabinets.. you'll be happy when you go to clean & just have to throw the paper away... because grease & dust rise too. Can't wait to see your next project.
I am 65 yrs young and have my own home. I have been thinking about painting my kitchen cabinets for a long time, you have made this look like a project that I can do thanks to the paint and primer you used. Thank you! New subscriber here..
I know that's right. I remember when HGTV made its empire on Design on a Dime show and then totally abandoned the premise of that show and made everything in the house biz so expensive.
Yes, cheap is definitely a word that I would use to describe Valspar paint. A few years ago I painted the front of my stucco house per request of my HOA. (I really would rather have done siding instead, but didn't have the money or the time to go thru HOA process, so I painted as requested.) I used Valspar paint. Result? Eh. So so. This year was having my mother's porch painted. I ok'd the painter to use Valspar. Next door neighbor with adjoining porch hired the same guy. THEY used Behr paint. It was like night and day. THEIR Behr paint job looked like silk. MY Valspar paint job looked like it was painted with Elmer's glue...The rest of Mom's house is being done with Behr paint. And the porch will eventually be redone with Behr paint.
Very nice. Another idea would be to put up a couple of wood shelves where the coffee station is to break up the white and be functional as well as decorative.
I am floooored!!! This is possibly the BEST low budget kitchen makeover I have seen! I have never been more inspired...and DEF going to try the Valspar. New sub😘
My son has owned his own painting business for decades. I know he almost always uses Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore. I passed along your comments regarding the Valspar Primer. I hope he tries it out for himself. Not only does it look like it might cut his work time down, but it should also lift his profit margin.
That desk area would be a perfect set down prep area for a handicapped person, like myself. I can't stand for long, so being able to sit chop and prepare food in between standing would change my life.
Exactly. Please remember, videomaker, that you sound a bit disrespectful toward how others have done things before and other needs people have, when you keep going on and on about how silly a certain design choice is. You take a lot away from the heritage of women's primary jobs and economic outputs in previous generations - that output was based on sitting at that desk every day and planning from-scratch meals and project management for the entire home. That was a woman's office and her only place of control in her life, in many cases, and her only place where her brain was able to be fully used without it being a threat to someone else. Also, the areas you ripped out are display areas for treasured plates and other heirlooms that, again, would frequently be the only things a woman had left from her own mother since she lost her name and her items when she moved in with her husband who might be older and already established. And as Jaylynn said, disabled people (which we all are in our own ways...4.5B people in the world can afford corrective lenses and the rest need them) need different levels to sit at to do kitchen work, as do kids. Please remember to be respectful of how people who don't live in your particular body or your particular kind of privilege might need a space. I'd love to subscribe but the tone is not currently inclusive or respectful. Hoping I'll see other videos of yours that do better on this soon.
In the coffee nook I would remove that piece of counter top and find a piece of furniture curio or build a piece for the coffee station. She could even add some Mexican terracotta tiles. But I love what you accomplished ❤❤❤❤
I love how your mom's kitchen came out. I have the exact kind of non-wood cabinets and painting them and not using that Valspar primer made my paint come off quickly especially around my cabinet hardware. I also have those railings up above that you removed. I may decide to do that too. Doing it under $100 is incredible. I'm always afraid of remodel or updating because of cost. You inspired me to do it without worry about money! Thank you!
SAME! The cost and the inconvenience of having to use the kitchen while I'm trying to do the remodel. I have 25 years of grime to clean off too.... :( When I do get to it, I will definitely use that primer, though!!
Fantastic Transformation. I would have painted the inseryed little shelf above the stove vent and cover the entire area with a great piece of art. It could create a little hidden place to store valubles. I love camoflauging private spaces.
The lowered counter may not have been a desk, but instead a baking counter. The lower counter height allows you to look down into the larger Kitchen Aid stand mixer bowl and also can be a better height for rolling out pastry in the home kitchen. And with no cabinet below you can stand closer to your work surface.
You're probably right, my kitchen has a built in table that is much lower than a standard counter and I LOVE it for rolling/kneading dough, etc. It's much easier to work at because of it's height.
@@kimschannel5567 This is a mobile home. The sheetrock comes covered in a vinyl cover. They call it VOG, which stands for vinyl over gypsum. It can't be removed. The Valspar bonding primer is a great primer to use with it.
Adaline, you always amaze me! Your talents and your hard working ethic is incredible. This transformation at such a low cost, WOW! I hope you are all able to do a lot of fun things while you are there.
i love your improvements! A great idea for that former desk area. My favorite is the use of white. Using white, and plenty of it is never wrong. :) :) Anyone can add in and change around many things of any colors any time when white paint is used. And using white paint makes the room so inviting, so bright and cheery and clean. imo it's like a piece of white linen; just so pretty on its own, and goes with any color. :)
I agree and will never tire of a white kitchen! I wish white appliances would become readily available, to continue the look. I Have never liked the soul sucking stainless steel kitchen appliance look.
Looks fabulous!! Wondering a few things: Did you pull off the wallpaper or prime & paint right over it? How do you reach the plants so high up to water them regularly? The metal stove hood: It gets greasy & dirty pretty easily, so how is the primer & paint for scrub-cleaning? How many gallons of primer & paint did you use? 2 coats of paint would be needed. A gallon of paint or primer is $70 + tax up here in Canada, so it would cost a few hundred on primer & paint alone but still worth it for such a transformation. Looks good!!
The only thing I would do to this beautiful kitchen, is change out the "boob" light over the sink area. That is very dated. Loved seeing this transformation.
The coffee station cart is great! The drawer actually brings out the tile on the wall. And the great thing about the cart is you can pull it out for a party!
The transformation is amazing and I love the coffee station. Our kitchen cabinets need to be modernized so I'm thrilled you found this primer! Thank you for sharing and cheers from Canada. 🌟💖🌟
You did such a good job. I don’t think I would change a thing not even the little coffee stand. I think it goes in with the decor that you put in there for your mom I mean it’s so nice. You did such a good job.😊
Everything looks great!! In the past, paint over wallpaper was too heavy and pulled the wallpaper away from the wall. Who knows now days with so many new items available! You inspired me!! Thanks for a wonderful step by step makeover!! Love it!!
It would have been great at the end to show the before and after again just before you signed off! I love how updated just putting coat of paint and covering up the wallpaper made the place feel so fresh
Probably not since the current setup is a standard footprint of its era (former kitchen designer here). That was likely the lady of the house's planning office area - most kitchens and kitchen/LR combos of this era had a built-in desk for that purpose..
I painted the cabinets in my kitchen and big utility room back in the 70s, when oil-based paint, which was strong and looked really good, was available. I painted the stove hood, too. The cabinets were stock “fruitwood” sprayed on finish over real wood that wasn’t nice enough to just strip and stain.
A coffee bar was perfect! Of course, it’s exactly what I would have done! 😉😍 We’re buying a house with orange colored wood cabinets-they go buh-bye the day after closing! I’m going to remember that Valspar primer! 👍🏼
Picture in that space was great. Spice rack in that space would have been nice too and handy to use. I do like the coffee bar too. Kitchen looks fantastic after the renew.
Agreed - really need more clarity on impact to hinges tho...the people who had my house before me painted like this and painted over all hinges and the doors now don't really close and if I ever painted over I'd be stuck painting over hinges too...and it's a messy look.

We made ours into a coffee bar too!! I love mine. Underneath the area is our dog’s water! But I like the idea of that cute table. A beverage fridge would look good too. One thing I would change is to put the picture up just a little. It looks like it’s sitting on top of the coffee pot
I can't reply for her, but I can say I would highly recommend removing wallpaper before painting. The few spots in my house that had been painting over wallpaper, within a year, the wallpaper was peeling off and I had to remove it anyway and repaint everything.
It looks like a manufactured home, and if so, that isn't wallpaper "exactly" -those panels are hung with those designs already on them. YES, I used to live in one.... so I'm assuming it's the same product. I could be wrong. 🤷🏻♀️
It looks like VOG (vinyl over gypsum) paneling. It's used in prefab homes and mobile homes. I have it in my Gunnison home in the kitchen and have wanted to paint it for years, but was afraid to.

As long as those hinges are INSIDE, it works well to leave them installed to finish.
Depends if hinges are hidden old style. Old style shows have take them off.

Very nice. Another idea would be to put up a couple of wood shelves where the coffee station is to break up the white and be functional as well as decorative.
Wow, you did a fantastic job in your parent’s kitchen. The transformation is huge on such a tiny price. I love it…
The little railing is a plate rail. You put decorative plates behind and it prevents them from slipping. They were big in the 60s and 70s I think.
This in no way looks like just $100 makeover! Looks very nice!❤
There's no way it was $100 in today's money - those accessories alone would have been about that and I just bought a gallon of paint yday for $50.
Glad you painted the cabinet in the wash room. It stuck out like a sore thumb. Looking at the kitchen towards the laundry room. Well done to you both.
I like the idea of the coffee nook instead of a desk. I do wonder if the fridge used to fit there?

Yes it will. Folks still clinging to SW and BM are really missing the boat - DIY stores' primer combos are excellent and so much cheaper.
That kitchen came out fantastic!! You did a wonderful job, your mom must be so happy with the transformation! ❤
That desk area would be a perfect set down prep area for a handicapped person, like myself. I can't stand for long, so being able to sit chop and prepare food in between standing would change my life.
Yes! I have a small "sit down" counter in my kitchen, and that's exactly how I use it. You're right, it is game-changing.

Fantastic Transformation. I would have painted the inseryed little shelf above the stove vent and cover the entire area with a great piece of art. It could create a little hidden place to store valubles. I love camoflauging private spaces.
Me too! Losing good storage is a big commitment and a little backsplash, art, or even a nice sample of wallpaper back there would have done a lot.
Looks good! I think I would have taken the place above the vent and used it for cook books

It was a desk. Those were a thing then.
Exactly. There are a million things it IS useful for that people who do legit cooking would know about and want to keep. From a former chef...

I’m surprised she didn’t address that. I’m pretty sure she painted over that covering/panels, tho.
You did a fantastic job, I really enjoyed, thank you for sharing.
