+Lea Waters thank you for sharing your personal story in amongst so many "oh yeah" moments from your talk! It all makes so much sense! I love that it's now online and that I can share your brilliance with friends & colleagues and also relive TEDxMelb!
I love your idea about the nightly news and having them show Ted constant genius and I totally agree with you I stopped watching the nightly news as well for the same reason
I am feeling very proud at the moment at having been a student of yours Lea in the MAPP program at University of Melbourne. Its been both professionally and personally life changing. Thank you Lea for your kindness and humility.
Thank you for sharing Professor Lea Waters on hope and elevation effect. You have reminded me how important it is to spread good news and positivity despite the possible backlash. I'm trying to do the little that I can to make the world a better place through positive psychology in my country and definitely need all the positivity I can get and not be shaped by the media. BE WELL!
When I was young, I thought there were too much good news on the Chinese broadcast. But after I grew up, I found that built the base of proud for me and the Chinese people I know and made us to think in a positive way the future of Chinese democracy, although we would often criticize many things happened in China.
Brilliant!!! I love the idea that there would be a lot less depression if we all shared Hope. We need help, hope truth, and balance. We need compassion and kindness. I love the idea of inspiring. The news does sensationalize the negative. We all want truth but we need balance. Currently , the news is far too negative. I’ve noticed lately that they’ve been trying lately to throw in an inspirational story at the end of their broadcast. It’s still not balanced. News people, I’m sure there are heroes among you think about it getting thousands of people off of antidepressants. You News folks can be part of the solution. We are not talking about imbalanced fake news in either direction. We’re talking about inspiration, positivity, and honesty. I love this idea I believe this lovely lady is onto something important.
The vast majority of me is being inspired by your moral excellence. And what left is being triggered and elevated by your positivity... Thank you Lea for sharing your own experience... You're really BRAVE! Keep flourishing!
Here, here! I came to this conclusion a number of years ago and stopped reading the papers because they are full of horror stories. Been advocating a good news media outlet for ages. Great talk.
HI Lea, Thanks and now after decades of isolated non-news watching, I have a backer! And in Melbourne. Better still. Congratulations and again - thanks! : )
Inspirational! I was lucky enough to be in the audience at TEDxMelbourne to hear this talk delivered first hand by Professor Waters. It was my first introduction to Positive Pyschology and as someone who suffers from mental illness it was the most powerful talk of the day. Prof. Waters issued a call to action that day, one that to this day I continue to carry out. Thank you Lea for a life changing talk.
Lea... WWWOOOOOOWWWW.... many many thanks! You`re like a light coming from the other side of the world to help those without hope believe that - as Morrisey sung in the 80's, "There's a light that never goes out...". I pray for, one day, we could meet and have a chance to talk a lot with you. Thanks again!!😀
Hi Lea, thanks for your contribution. I think you make a lot of valid points about the news and its impact on people. News, good or bad is a bit like a switch on the mind. I agree what you say about the elevation effect occurring in response to sport, or it could be from music, art, etc. I won my first gold medal for a global competition after watching the Rio Olympics 2016 and Great Britains gold rush..... Pretty inspiring. I installed Rio 2016 Olympic Games app and set about winning some gold medals of my own. I've won quite a few now and I've become a World number 1 on the StickTennis World tour. Optimism and uplifting positive psychology works. Striking a balancing between giving good news and reporting not so good news is important. I'm going to put on my PI hat on and get on the case. I'm putting an APB out for good news, in the mean time, I'm putting your video on twitter, and Facebook. have a great day......
Prof. Lea Waters thank you for sharing your knowledge, research and personal experience with us. You radiate hope, bravery and kindness. Keep sharing this important message.
Thank you Lea. Inspiring. Working with children, in sharing stories of positive acts and people, only makes them want to do this more often, to give feedbck to those who are sharing their strengths and positive gains.... our students are gaining more experience at sharing what they notice with their peers, and it makes me smile everyday, with pride... its like rainbows being painted everyday. Looking forward to a new year with more celebrations of 'positive detectives' Thank you again for being persistent with the challenges you have faced. There are many of us along side you.
Thank you Lea, your talk is so inspiring and you demonstrate through your own journey the gifts we receive when remembering we are a life member of humankind
Thumbs up Lea Waters. Thanks for being such a great leader in this space. Having faith and believing in our capacity for delivering positive things, that's got to be good for human kind :)
Thank you for this video. Thanks for your vulnaribility and sharing your story. I will do what you are doing with your life: be a professor in positive psychology. Here goes....
Thank you for your inspiring speech and meaningful message. I do lots of research about possitive thinking and I have always known how powerful it could change my life. However, I have to say untill watching this video do I think about spreading it to others. I surely will start sharing good news and moral excellence from today on.
Excellent talk and a very courageous woman. I wholly agree. I recently bought a tshirt print that just says " BAN everything i disagree with". Is where you stand. Stuff the counter culture of non- healing. Keep going.
In the 64 years of life's experience I have come to the conclusion that 85% of the 7 Billion humans we share our amazing Planet with are good people. It's the 15% of creeps who get the attention. I live by a saying - 'Something good comes from something adverse, the adverse is there to smack you up side the head to wake you up.' Life's always a learning process and we're all still learning. Never give up. Have a nice day and follow your bliss.
Thoughts come from where? Very good talk. I agree the media is imbalanced and not worthy. The thing is, none of our thoughts should be taken very seriously. We can spontaneously have either positive or negative thoughts. Why do we identify with "our" thoughts? All thoughts should be questioned. Life is a fun (or should be fun?) illusion. And the dark part of the story will not magically go away, well not unless you use magic.
The most telling parts for me is that she believes we are all basically good. Then she said she walked away from relationships with some people because the relationship was not helpful for her.
the news is about delivering fear and anxiety because there is nothing we can do about the chaos.. An individual has no power to make changes in another country. We need to focus on our own life. Find your own calm and passion for our own life.
We have a good news show in Brazil. It's called "Good News" in English, which might explain why people don't watch it. Most of Brazil's population do not speak English. They simply don't know what the show is about...
Being positive is fine - all things being equal But as we all know, ALL things are not equal The system is rigged - the deck is stacked. You can be as positive as you like if you're on the right side of the fence
“I’ve been on the receiving end of scorn, mockery, derision...” (by them) but she still thinks people are good, apart from the ‘them’ that she derides, mocks and is scornful of. I love irony.
So happy to see over 500 views within 2 days of this being posted. Let's all share more positive news

She's terrific and spot on! Thank you!
I haven't watched news for about 5 years now. I have more inner peace
Your confusing ignorants with peace. You must be a climate change and covid denier if your not depressed.

Awesome. Trying to live like that all my life!!!!
I love the Australian outlook on life. Very grounded and matter of fact.

Always try to see for the good side of things. You can learn a lot from a bad experience.
In the field of ‘positive psychology’ we have found that ‘positive psychology’ has a positive effect.
Really!
Love this! Thank you Lea!

Finally, the truth.
Wow, how much more important is that these days - 5 years on.....

Lold at dislike. So fitting.
Oh ya, blame the media. One of only a handful of groups of human beings it's still acceptable to stereotype.
It’s not humankind it’s Mankind let’s not get “WOKE” 🙄
