Respect the criminal code | Andrew Gason | TEDxMelbourne

- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Andrew was the hardest criminal around yet integrating back into society was his hardest journey of all.
Imagine a world where all youth and community groups were self-sustainable - independent of government funding, grants, and resources. That’s the founding vision upon which Andrew Gason has built not-for-profit organisation New Civilization Builders Inc.
Andrew’s divergent youth gave him the tools to fruitfully engage with young people on all levels. As a Samoan raised in South Auckland New Zealand, he spent half his life living in the criminal underworld being involved in every crime from burglary to weapon smuggling. The conclusion was prison. In 1998 Andrew was released from jail and started to search for a new direction in life. On October 10, his story will permanently change perspectives on perceived obstacles.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

This guy is an absolute inspiration. This is how the justice system _should_ work.
You not satisfied with the expense of punishing criminals ie 5 times cost of a car for Grand Theft Auto 5yrs punishment? You voted for it!? Criminals cant vote nor cant the patriots in prison blue square on the flag.
Notice how he successfully rehabilitated himself while the justice system lost his paperwork... seems the system only works when it keeps away

The title is clickbait. But his story is Amazing.
8.25min IMO the title is not clickbait, you didn't get it. "In the criminal world there is a code of conduct." I think you need to go back and listen to what Andrew said the Criminal code is. I lived by it when I was on the wrong side of the law.
Try applying it to your life: 1) Don't leave your friends in the lurch; back them up 2) Don't harm woman or children 3) Don't steal from poor people.
NOTE: I have seen all three of those trodden underfoot by so-called law abiding citizens. You don't have to be in Jail or have a criminal record to be a crook!
@@eagle17nz He said what it was. But there was very little detail on it. That's why OP says clickbait. The title makes it sound like that will be the focus, and it's barely an afterthought.
@@eagle17nz So you can steal from the rich people... cool.

the last nuts of krypton
The cops read his stuff checked their files and went "he's just nuts"
@jason lul a 22 doesnt even pierce your skull xD
I don’t think he actually did a proper backflip lmao
He was resting against the fence saw the dogs eyes, grabbed the fence and pulled himself back over the fence, resulting in a backflip. It’s faster than getting up then mantling it.
Dhr. Neuteboom actually they definitely will . In fact .22lr pistol is very popular for doing hits on people.
Oh and the people die too.
He's gone from stealing or car stereos, to stealing our hearts.
Actually he did a little arms and drugs trafficing thus indirect murder as well.. lets not forget
OriginalCatfish let’s also not forget all the good he’s done which I would say definitely makes up for the bad things he’s done.
He is truly a phantom thief of hearts
This comment shits all over every single comment on this entire thread. Kudos
Wow, what an amazing dude. Unfortunate circumstances of his birth and family life which ultimately led him to look for another kind of family, he surrounded himself with criminals and went into a life of crime. But he took the responsibility to do what he thought was right, not just for himself but for others, and the universe treated him accordingly. Bravo Andrew.
Danilo Podrascanin kudos to the police giving him a break
What a beautiful path, and choices you’ve made. Thanks for choosing love and sharing your gifts. You’re an inspiration and if I were your parents or adoptive parents, I would be incredibly proud and thankful for you. Even as a stranger, I’m thankful for your life :)
quite odd to see this channle here
Legend says that when he went off that stage, police were waiting for him.
I actually got the chance to talk to this guy about a year ago at a health conference. Probably the most well spoken and wise guys I’ve ever met
The funny thing is, I live in Auckland and I know the golf course, river with path he took.
now you know the exact path to take in order to steal car radios and not get caught
but do you really mate? plenty of golf courses near rivers in Auckland aye.
Plot twist: The friends that let him down actually intercepted the paperwork he left at the police station.
Very probable
Or they just lost it like they do for almost 50% of FIRs people send in
900 cases of crime solving when PD are always on the brink... Nobody wanted that.
that's actually a solid theory

If you went into an US police station and confessed your crimes like that you’d be in jail faster than you could say “community service” lol. It’s sad but true.

I wouldn't call it a comeback story given he was never convicted and officially paid for his crimes. Don't get me wrong we're lucky and he made the change for the better but not getting caught and essentially getting away for all the crimes he committed is not a come back story....

The sweetest hard criminal ever. I want to keep him in my pocket💕
Being german speaking I looked up "criminal code" in Wikipedia. It says: "Typically a criminal code will contain offenses which are recognised in the jurisdiction, penalties which might be imposed for these offenses and some general provisions".
Now the title makes full sense to me after I listened to Andrew. He really has courage and a good heart. I am very happy for him that he could turn his life around. I deal with it a lot and just....damn he kept it up for 16 mins. Raaaaad xD
I think he was really nervous, you can also tell by the way he cuts his sentences, but i found it extremely amusing how he managed to make the audience smile while he himself was nervous.

not sure which is more impressive, turning away from the only life he knew, his dedication to finding some sort of truth, or the decision to have not only turned away from the life, but to become the complete opposite. Bravo.
Dont try this in the USA lol
Imagine how many lives would be turned around if they just got a second chance
where did he try this
Great Video. Andrew found his own rehab path. He found what worked for him. Giving back and offering help to others is a powerful elixir for your own needs as well. My only reason for living is to serve someone else, to see them helped, furthered, saved, encouraged, directed. It gives meaning and worth to my miserable existence. Without this is the world, the world is a very hard cold and crass place!!!
And all started because his parents got divorced and he was told he was adopted and his dad still has no clue??
Love you Andrew! The Universe looks after those who surrender... I trust that all needs will be provided for and all problems will be resolved with almost minimal intervention on my part.
This is the kind of story kids at school should be exposed to more often.

In newzeland it’s called a discharge , if u have no prior history and if the judge allows it then the defendant has the right to ask for a conditional discharge which means he cannot be caught reoffending for a year or whatever decided then it’s all good , it’s like it never happened in the eyes of the law, no conviction no nothing
What an inspiration. Self-motivated change.
proud to know this man. Congrats Andrew.
Well done mate! What a great story - No BS just tell it like it is and was. Isnt it amazing how we want to judge people so quickly. His parents. Him. The Crims. When we always judge ourselves first then we cannot have compassion for others. The world desperately needs people like Andrew to show us the way to get on with each other. That if you see a bad egg instead of judging you can lift their spirits and you can appeal to their highest self to be a better person. The fact he sought another pathway and found redemption through religion says alot about what religion really stands for. A pathway. A pathway to redemption because we need one as we will always be violating the right to be human and alive on this amazing planet called earth.
