Hi Jay, i like almost every video you do as you have a great style but for an average golfer like me (very average) this video is gold. I spent years not understanding spin rates, land angles etc. and from watching your previous videos all of that makes sense now. I went for a Mizuno fit (horrible), TM p790 fit (great) and a Srixon fit (good). Because I'd seen all of your videos i knew what questions to ask at the fittings & what i was looking for. Even though the TM fitting was the best experience overall, the club that suited me most was the ZX5, good launch and land angle and whether I'm just improving or it was the v sole, i have less fat shots. With the custom fitting, adjusting the length and the lie were the final pieces of the puzzle. The iron market in particular was the most confusing for me, game improvement, super game improvement, players, players distance etc. it took me a long time and with your help, work out what i actually needed. Jay i'd put a link in to your much watched correct iron choice video as i think it's relevant here. To all the viewers out there that aren't members consider it, Jay is technically excellent with so much knowledge and such a nice guy to boot. Jay is the only you tube channel that i am a member of and it starts at less than £1 a week!
I took the zx5. But instead of blending. I put modus 105 pro tour shafts. Then had them lofted to match the zx7. For me this combination gets me great flight (high) distance is shorter because of loft change. But lighter shaft gives me more speed so they pay each other off. Just what I did. But showing you can Taylor your shafts and clubs together. Love my zx irons
As a lefty, we dont get all the options and certainly cant get fitted as noone holds stock. Ive bought and sold over 4 years to get my current bag. Still game the Z785s but swapped the 4i to a ZX4 recently. Im going to swap the 5i to a zx5 too for more confidence and a fuller swing. Thanks for the vid, explains a lot. I dropped my 3W to a 5W with a lighter shaft and got better results. It comes down to trial and error...
Absolutely right, unfortunately as a lefty commonly trial and error is the only way to get to the right combination. As a left hander that plays right handed, I understand how split the 2 half's of the market are and just how much easier it is for a right hander. Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍🏻
Agree on many of the comments above. This is an excellent demonstration of choosing the right iron for your swing SPEED. Very useful for anyone going into any fitting in the future.
Perfect. All the info for the slower swing speed. Thank you! ZX4 may be most forgiving and highest launching loft for loft but no good above 7 or 8 iron for the slower player.
This is the one I've been waiting for. I'm buying a new set this winter to replace my J15CB's. Zx7/Zx5 is top of my list. T150/T200 will get a run too. I've been wondering how to blend this set. I will stay with TT x100 unless I give the new Fuji Axiom graphite a go. Great video, nice job adjusting swing speeds.
Hi Jay, as a 59 year old golfer, I have blades in 8, 9 and wedges, cavity backed in 6 and 7 and hybrids 3-5. I was swinging in the high seventies, may be 80 on a good day but I found that about 3 years ago my speed started dropping off and this affected my poorer strikes. I went back to my fitter (god bless 4 Counties Golf) and after testing I swapped to graphite shafts in all the irons. The result was more swing speed which helps out on the less than perfect strikes and less wear and tear on the elbows. I’m a 10 handicap and having a blended set and being open minded about what to use keeps me enjoying my golf. Ps, a bit of stretching does wonders as well😁
Really glad you are making a change that is helping you enjoy the game as the years progress. I overtime have gone from having a 2 Iron down iron set to now finishing at 5 iron and introducing hybrids into the bag to help with launch etc. Sometimes we just have to grow old gracefully 😁😁👍🏻
Yo! Thank you for this. I followed the entire video. You answered several questions that I had as well. I have narrowed it down to the ZX7 and the P770. I ma hitting the 770 further by an average of 10-15 yards. I originally felt the p770 was the club, but I'm liking the ZX7 for some reason, even though it's not producing the distance.
I was fit into Hot Metal Pro's at 92mph swing speed due to being a mid/high handicap and struggled half the season due to large gaps in the shorter irons. Went into ZX7's and my iron consistency and overall G.I.R has dramatically improved
Initial poor fitting persuading you to go HMP, distance gaps would be unrealistic at 92mph. Shame that the reasoning behind the choice was, an antiquated view on iron choice depending on handicap. Would have gone Forged at most, but would have also suggested something like the i230 also 🤔👍🏻
Thanks Jay, another gem. Interesting comment about hybrids for those with a slower swing speed, which includes me. I do have 3&4 hybrids, but my next set of irons I will consider ditching the 5 iron and buy a hybrid instead. That said, most greens you can run in a 5 iron to the green, probably a long par 4 and they don't normally have bunkers or hazards at the front.
Love the lower hit speeds, and it gives us such an easy way of replicating (the way you hit the ball so effortless) your swing, which is by far the most efficient (very little effort) I've ever seen. Kudos man. This channel should have one million subscribers. Guys spread the word, so we help this guy, which in turn helps us all. I was sick and tired of some other reviewers smashing the ball at 200 yards (7 club) which even themselves when they go on the golf course, they only hit it at 170.
Amazing content and enlightening. Would love if you could do the same with the new titleist t range . I know it would be hard but thanks for all the content.
I’ve got 5 to 7 in the zx5 and 8 to pw in the zx7 with the 4 iron zx utility iron mk1 I absolutely flipping love em. The feel is beautiful and buttery. The zx5’ have a bit more sound off the face but I soon learned to ignore it. They are so underrated I’m off 3
Massively underrated. They used to say, that the Srixon irons were the poor man's Mizuno (due to both of them being Forged in Japan) but nowadays honestly they are both solid choices and golfers wouldn't be wrong for going either way. The Mizuno still offers more in the way of head choice and I think Srixon could do well introducing a HL (High Launch) version of the ZX4. 👍🏻
Curious what is your swing speed for a 7i? Carry distance? I tend to hit a high ball and have a shallow divot. Still manage a 6 handicap. Really would like a similar set up. Also looking at new T150, T200 and T350 irons similar blending.
Great review Jay your reviews are the best on u tube because you really break down the data on clubs and I do agree that so many iron lofts have been jacked up and the 5 and 6 iron have become harder to hit and also you need loads of wedges. I’m a senior, handicap level 15/17 swing speed 7 iron 74 mph and ball speed 85. I’m looking for irons with feel, forgiveness, distance and I still want my 5,6 irons for windy days. Tested a few the T350 decent lofts 5 iron at 23 degrees. The G430 nice but set requires 5 wedges. The QI no different to my Stealth which are nice but my 5 is 20 degrees and the 6 23 degrees. Looking at the market for my requirements The T350, ZX4, Cleveland zip ore XL, i530. And Wilson Dynapwr forged might offer those requirements. Would value your advice very much Jay.
Class as always Jay, I will be testing the Z-Forged II in the up and coming months and plan on having my first ever full bag fitting with club champion. Will be interesting to see what makes it into the bag, currently in the Callaway 2021 MB's which have been such a great set of irons
Hi Jay, recently found your channel and am really enjoying it. I came across this video and I’m starting to look to buy my first set of irons (I started playing 18 months ago and got a friends beginner set). Coming upto my 40th and I’m going to invest in some irons as I’ve managed to add to other parts of the bag along the way. Would it be possible for you to do a video on faster swing speeds? I swing my 7 iron about 95-100 but as I’m relatively new I’m anywhere between a 18-22 handicap. This video has really got me thinking because I presumed I was going to get a game improvement set to help my game but swing speed isn’t really my issue and there are virtually no videos on TH-cam to advise high handicap/faster swing speed golfers. Keep up the excellent content, Rob
Hi Rob, welcome to the channel. You are a fairly rare type of golfer being a mid high handicap but have 7 iron swing speed exceeding mine, that's why there isn't much content out there to guide you on your club choices. I have a video coming out today of the i530 irons. These can be retro spec'd in lofts to make them much more sensible and playable. Still you will have to think more like the 7 iron is the 6 iron and the 6 iron is the 5 iron etc, but with a little custom work on the lofts it's something that could work extremely well for you. The i530 irons are very forgiving and work very well within the players distance category, maybe also something to look at would be the Pro 245 irons, as they can also if needed be slightly increased in loft to not hit everything too far 👍🏻
Jaybone. Good video I’m hunting for a high launching 4iron replacement. Hybrids out. Utility XXXKim 23* iron goes to far. How about zx5 or zx4 in a 4iron?
Would be nice to see this same video but with changing the shaft flex to softer flexes as the speed went down from X-stiff to stiff and regular. I think that would be a more realistic comparison and I imagine the descent angle and other data metrics will change.
I am building my set... Just ordered my first iron. Startingbwith tge zx4mk2 4i. Based on how that goes, I will either go either go for one more zx4 in a 5, then transition to the zx5. Gonna end it up with zx7's at the top end, 9,P,A. Depending on how tgevzx5 7 iron goes. I got fitted for them, I know the shaft, (recoil f3) i know the grip size, just don't know where to transition. I figure ill order my next roundbof clubs in a week or two. Srixon felt Amazing and I couldn't tell the difference between the zx5 and zx7 in terms of feel or flight at the range, but I coukd tell tge zx4 was hotter and I WANT that at the back end. Thinking 4,5 zx4 6,7,8 zx5 9-A zx7. Lets see if it pans out. Best
Thanks for the comment. It's a good idea that you are getting involved with blending to get the best performance from all of your irons. One note to specifically take is lofts and those will determine your distance gaps between irons. The ZX4, 5 and 7 are differently lofted and you'll have to order them bent to differing amounts to allow for this. 👍🏻
Mark has an extremely good ability to play knock down shots with his irons so the gapping at faster speed is somewhat negated. Not every, or should I say hardly any golfers truly have that ability and so therefore the easiest way is to remove that complication entirely 👍🏻

@@TZOID08 Interesting name. I played with Tzoid pro 11s for 15 years. I hate fat soles too. The Srixon V sole really does make them play as thin soles. I play ZX5 now.
@@grahamdavis8997 I owned Mizuno Tzoid Pro II Irons for many years and still have two sets in the Man Cave :) . I'll see how the ZX5 Mk II Irons work and report back .
@@TZOID08 They don't have the buttery soft feel of a Mizuno but are very forgiving. Easily bent for loft and lie. I think you'll love them. I love the turf interaction.
Thanks for Excellent info. So semi-decent ball striker with slow min-70 swing speed need at least 32 degree 7 iron with bits of forgiveness for producing decent descending angle and stopping power. What do you recommend a such iron within Mizuno brand?
Something like the JPX923 Hot Metal HL (Srixon unfortunately doesn't have a HL version within their line up), or possibly the JPX923 Forged bent slightly weak or even Mizuno Pro 223 depending on need for forgiveness 👍🏻
923 Hot Metal Pro . gives you everything you want in a set of irons, no need for mixed set, excellent price, power and forgiveness in the longer irons and control in the shorter irons. The HL are nice too but the sole is super wide.
I swing the 7 iron between 87-93 mph but im still struggling mighily to make good contact, square the face and hit the sweet spot. I dont need distance of game improvement clubs but i need the forgiveness badly. Should i stuck with Game improvement or go to something else with such high swing speeds?
Hey Jay, unrelated to this video, but I posted some questions on one of your older videos ... "Changing this ONE thing can give you LONGER Drives". If you get a sec, could you respond? If easier for me to post the question here regarding "that" video, just let me know. Thx.
If possible Paul, sorry I only get very limited time to reply to comments. I concentrate on my members comments first then whoever I can answer with the time I have left 👍🏻
Hi there, when it comes to shaft, there is a shaft out there to suit every golfer, we all swing it differently and more importantly we load it differently from everyone else. I've seen low swing speed golfers need Stiff shafts before due to how they load the shaft in transition which enables them to produce more club head speed at impact. Nowadays with the correct measuring equipment, we can measure what bend profile shaft you need from which manufacturer as they are all different and do different things even with the same Regular stamped on them. I think the main difference between the two is the V Sole on the Srixon. Depending on how you impact or interact with the ground, one may work better for you on ground effect miss hits than the other 👍🏻
Curious, does the CG further back from the face increase peak height by increasing dynamic loft? Or does it increase peak height while delivering the same dynamic loft?
A bit of both go be honest, more so how the ball launches higher due to the 2 CGs being vertically so different, also there is always however small a certain amount of loft twist on the head with the ball hitting higher than the CG. The later is seen very much so with Driver for example and also is affected more by a weaker shaft that will allow more torquing. Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍🏻

So depending on your current speed levels, if you are relatively fast and will only get quicker as you improve, then I'd steer away from the much more distance inspired ZX4 as they will quickly start going too far. So on balance the ZX5 will be the best balance of functional distance and forgiveness out of the two. Also the ZX5 will suit you more as you become more consistent in your club delivery 👍🏻

To blend a set can i just replace the Gap, pitch, 9 , with the zx5. And keep my 8,7,6,5 in my Zx4. Thank you
Can do just be wary of the lofts and any distance gapping as the technology changes blend out but yes it's definitely possible 👍🏻
28.5⁰ vs 31⁰ seven iron... it seems like their priority is loft, not looks. Jay's recommendation of the HL seems more in line with what they want
it’s dynamic loft that matters though
Absolutely correct 👍🏻
Question: The person fitting me suggested a regular shaft since I am a 75mph swing speed. Would you suggest the ZX7 or the P770?
@@AskGolfNut thanks!
Thanks for the great video. I’m looking at the ZX5’s. I love the way they feel. Currently playing the 2019 P790’s
Just sold my 19' p790s and ordered 5-A zx5 mkii today! What direction did you go? I haven't even hit one yet they didn't have them at my fitting
@@realweldon when I was trying them, they felt amazing. I have always played TM irons, but these are tempting me to make the switch. Haven’t pulled the trigger yet though
@@chrisvalentino2307 I really liked the 790 I'm hoping these feel similar. Just loaned/used stealths this weekend and it just wasn't the same. Nice straight shots but the feel was off. Got 900us for my 19 8 piece set!. Dicks sporting goods just price matched an Amazon listing of 933 for a 7 piece set then let me completely customize them.
ZX5 mkii 5-A tour lite X
7 iron speed 83 to 85 but I have trouble with launch and spin so I'm hoping these light shafts in X help with that without being toooo crazy
I love them but for me it have to much offset so sad
Here’s a very simple method. Play whatever you like then take lessons and practice.
I spray the ball all over and swing really quick. It’s really a problem lol
Either Max or Max 10K for you then 😊
It's too bad you only had a 6i in the zx4... Why not compare 6i in the 3 models?
Beggars can't be.......... That's the only ones I received as media sample 👍
@@AskGolfNut funny thing is I purchased the zx5s based on this vid months ago 👌
@chrisfranz 😁 how are you finding them after months of playing with them? 👍🏻
@@AskGolfNut unfortunately I only played one round before having shoulder surger... I loved the feel but it will be a while before I can play again.
Hi great video! I have a question as beginner just getting started into golf, can i straight away pick up zx5mk2 for long term use or i should get zx4mk2 instead? Appreciate if you could give me some advice 🙏🏼 thankyou
Thankyou for the advice ! I will go for zx5.
Remember there's new ones coming soon so you may or nasty not want to wait for the new releases 🤷👍🏻👍🏻
