Been on a similar path to yourself getting into the hiking first then venturing into camping.
Currently rocking a 1-man OEX Phoxx v2 so far but keeping an eye out for the right 2-man at the right price when the time comes.

James, great backdrop for the tent review👍 I can see why you love both tents as they both look pretty good in terms of specs and appearance. Makes sense that you would use them for different purposes. Very useful and comprehensive talk through of the tents from your perspective👍 Have found Terra Nova great when my Laser Competition needed repaired.

My favourite spot is just down the slope from the pitched tents where the daffodils grow and the spring for water is. Absolutely stunning spot. Loving the videos.

I bought the Helm Compact 2 been camping twice in it so far. I absolutely love it its a great tent. Feels very spacious inside that’s why I picked it. It feels brilliant for the money. Nice review cheers mate

Cracking video that mate. Busy weighing up both these tents at the minute! The helm still calls out though! The price pays a massive factor! It’s incredible for the price tag! But that pioneer is also a think of beauty!
Cheers matey. Yea I think if I had to pick it would be the helm. Slightly cheaper materials but still really good. Plus more space for the same weight and cheaper. I definitely recommend both tent but the helm has more options. Thanks for watching mate

Thanks for the comparison 👍. I have a soulo but 2nd tent is the Helm 2 Compact. I love the compact version and there are a handful of small but decent differences... the poles for example are shorter and more compact in store bag. I was thinking of swapping out the Helm for the Pioneer but decided to stick with the Helm. Don't get me wrong I reckon the Pioneer is a terrific tent but for me the Helm compact suits my need more. You've made my decision to keep it more solid 😀

Brilliant review, cheers mate, for me its the Helm 2 all day, not just the money but the internal size is better and the two porches, coupled with the minimal weight difference, its a no brainer for me.

Great video James, my first impressions are in driving rain and high wind you will get soaked in the pionear, with the top cover...... it will also be very flappy and noisy. the Helm looks very good value for money.....more room, 2 doors and vestebules, thats my choice.

I have the Pioneer 2,went for my first wild camp on Dartmoor a few months ago,great tent,warm,and easy to put up,but like you say getting 2 people in would be a bit of a squeeze ,have to be very friendly .😉

Nice one James... not many reviews of the Pioneer 2 on youtube, so I'm sure this will get some views - I have been just too lazy to bother reviewing my own! lol. It served me well on the West Highland Way, and for some reason it's the tent I get my best sleep in so I've never had the urge to sell or replace it - hope you have many great adventures with it... atb Sinco

@@jamesoutandaboutn.i227 sent the tent back because it seemed like the poles was to long and made it a problem and I like summit camping 😃 was interesting vid and made me start looking at southern cross for sale but think all sold out at the mo 🥾⛺️🇬🇧
@@UrbanRatsAdventures yea I think for the money the poles definitely should be better. Been looking at southern cross aswell might be good for summits with some good walking miles

Do you think the distance between the ground sheet and the grass is it enough to protect the mesh when camping on floods floors?
I've never camped on flooded floors sorry
Think I’d pick the helm 2 compact just because of the short poles and the great bag the tent comes in.
I already have the helm 1 compact as a winter tent I chose as it’s polyester rather than silicon nylon which stretches a lot and absorb water when wet which can make super light tents a bit saggy when wet. Nice video how have you got on with the pioneer?
Yea there is definitely more room in the helm. It's a brilliant tent for the money. The pioneer is a brilliant tent too. Had it in some wild weather and it was solid
the question is, what are main differences? poles on pioneer look thicker..so i assume pioneer is designed to withstand harsher weather?
The pioneer definitely has better materials but the helm is a better design. There's alot more tension on the pioneer poles and one of the doors touches the inner. There's better air flow on the helm and more space inside and two vestibules. I'm looking forward to giving the pioneer a good test in the winter. And I like the look of the pioneer. On paper the pioneer should definitely be better in harsh weather hence the price difference. I would definitely recommend both tents. I'm just picking at the faults really just with having both. Hey mate great vid... I've Just bought the Pioneer 2 yesterday, but keep looking at the Helm 2. As a lover of both tents which would you go for... Its only going to be me in the tent. Cheers
Thanks matey. That's a tough question lol. Both tents are brilliant. I would say if you were thinking about an extra person then go for the helm. Both tents are great in bad weather. I would say the pioneer has better materials so it might have the edge for winter camps. But the helm is cheaper haha.
@@jamesoutandaboutn.i227 ha ha yep there's the dilemma, I've bought the Pioneer now so I'm hoping it will work well for me.. I don't really plan on having 2 people in there in the winter. I have a hubba hubba nx I love for the summer for 2.

One thing I will do is add line loc 3 tensioners to both the outer and inner.. Really don't know why terra nova doesn't do this like the helm. Bought myself a little bobcat 1. Its been fun to be fair. Enjoyed sticking it in places and not worried too much. I'm going to do the same mod with that. Along with a couple of others.

The bathtub on the inner looks deeper on the pioneer 2 in the video, would you say this is accurate?
Not to sure mate. I would have to check. Never had any issues with either but you could be right
Weight kills the fun🤷 Sadly to buy something around 1-1.5kg you need to spend a fortune.
Stick with the helm 2 as the wife will throw you out of the Pioneer 2, but I’m happy with my £50 Argos popup tent and leave the wife at home 😀

Why isn’t the helm 2 not 4 season when it goes down to the ground like the pioneer?
I thought that myself. They both have the same materials on the inner. The pioneer floor in thicker but both would be good for winter
Helm is a great tent, but...quality control from WC aint. Just check the zippers when you buy one, mine was broken. My mate bought a Helm 2 and it was missing a guy completely, luckily we had spares as you do. That's pretty shocking for a tent that's priced around 30% above the equivalent Vango. I've got 3 Vangos and they're all bombs, Not much will knock a mirage pro over
Iv never had any problems with terra nova tents. I know a few people who have had vango tents and say the quality is good for budget tent.
Are you sure the pioneer 2 had a loop on the top for your lantern? I’ve heard people complain because it didn’t have one :)
