    The bit about the SNL guys mentioning Craig's letter in an interview is crazy, what are the odds of that? Must have been extremely well-written and insightful to have made such an impact, even though they said they weren't sure if it was serious or a bit of a troll.

    One of the things I thought was horrifying about this movie was the relationship between Ellie and the old guy. He was devoted to her until he was no longer able to help her. So she kills him.
    Oskar quickly replaces the old guy. Was the old guy once like Oskar but he grew old? Will the same thing happen to Oskar? Ellie is more of a monster than a human so it doesn't seem unreasonable for her to use people for her survival. I doubt she really loves Oskar the same way that he loves her. Oskar's fate seems sealed by the end of the movie.
    But that's just what I thought when I saw it.

      In the book he's a pedophile so their relationship is even weirder. He also turns into a zombie vampire, which I understand that they left out of the movie, it wouldn't translate well. But the information the movie gives us makes your conclusion valid since we can only base assumptions on what the movie shows us.

      Yes, and this is why I think Matt is wrong about "Let Me In" being a better title. "Let the Right One In" poses the question: who is "the right one"? And you can read the film both ways: Oskar either finds true love by letting the right one in or he lets the wrong one in and ends up being taken advantage of by a monster.

    One of the big things they changed in the remake is that in the original it's implied Eli (or outright stated perhaps) is a boy that's been disfigured and lives as a girl, but in the American version she's just a normal girl, as normal as any vampire girl anyway.

    It's not just Danny Elfman's music and voice; Henry Selick was the director of the stop motion, and you can tell he's got a magical touch if you compare James and the Giant Peach or Coraline to Corpse bride, or Frankenweenie. Burton is a fantastic writer, but when it comes to animation, he pales in comparison.

    • @NinjaDimes
      @NinjaDimes 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      But Danny Elfman did the score for Corpse Bride as well as TNBC. I don't think they were saying the composer was inferior, just that the songs were in general, better.

    • @GreatWightSpark
      @GreatWightSpark 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NinjaDimes Elfman's done music for nearly if not all Burton films, as their styles mesh well. Matt already critiqued the unnecessary amount of singing in CB, whereas the pacing and setting of every piece in NB4C makes it a treasure. Elfman put his heart and soul into the singing voice of Jack, and it comes across far better than any other work they have done since.

    It's interesting, I do not know if they delve into it in this film but in the remake they had a scene where the young boy finds an old photo with the old man as a young kid and showing she and him were an item and also explains his willingness to disfigure his face and die for her. While the remake is called "let me in" with that little tid bit of back story and going with Mat saying the title "Let the Right one in" is more referring to the vampire letting the right boy into her life. Gives it an even more of a dark meaning that she only became friends and saved the boy because she knew he was the right one who would take her old lovers place as a loyal servant and protector.

    "Let The Right One In" is one of my all-time favourite movies, and it's a joy to hear you guys thoughts on it. :-) The title is actually a refrence to the Morrisey-song "Let the Right One Slip In", as the author is a hugh Morrisey-fan. The sequel short-story (that the author wrote to put an end to the theories that popped up after the movied came out that Eli was grooming Oscar) is called "Let The Old Dreams Die", which is the next lyric in the same song.
    As you guys said, this isn't really a vampire-film, but more a film about kids that happens to star a vampire, and where the vampire really isn't the real monster. You guys already pointed out, the bullies actions are the real horror, but the point of the film is that Oscar could turn into an even worse monster, but it's his relationship with Eli that prevents that to some degree. He wants to kill his bullies and could easily turn into a real killer (he collects news-clips of horrible crimes and such), but his relationship with Eli mellows him out and she calls him out on it. She dosen't want to kill, but has to to survive, but he wants to kill even though there could be other solutions to his problems, and the ecstacy on his face when he hits the bully shows how much he enjoys it. They help each other in a twisted way.
    When it comes to the remake, I would suggest you check it out, just to see how bizzare it is. Because it's almost exactly the same movie, except the exact opposite, because the script is almost identical (except they replace Jokke with a policeman), but everyhting else is changed. Where the light in the swedish is blue, the US one is orange. At the bridge-attack there is a steady long-shot in the Swedish, but the US uses a closeup and shakycam (and makes Abby (Eli) more of a monster, with way more blood). When a scene is shot right to left in the swedish, it's shot left to right in the US. It's really weird. The US version is also way more of a standard horror-movie, with way more blood and leaving out much of the ambiguity found in the swedish, making it so that Abby is obviously grooming Owen into her new Renfield, while Eli and Oscar can be interpreted in several ways. It's pretty much the most "american" version you can imagine. It's not a bad movie, but it's really dumbed down from the original and feels completley unneeded imo.

    I saw this movie when it was available on Netflix and I'm so glad I saw the original because I never had to care about an American version. To me, the Swedish version is it, anything else can only be an imitation. I had the same experience with the original "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" series. I watched that when it was available to stream, much before the American version was announced. I absolutely loved it, and then when the first installment of the American version came out it just paled in comparison. I won't even bother with the newest American version installment that is happening now. You can't replace Lisbeth Salander, there is only one. Put a fork in it. I don't understand why so many people don't enjoy movies if they are subtitled. I love foreign films and the fact I need to read doesn't take away anything. I actually have been watching everything with subtitles for a long time now, even though I understand what is being said. It helps me get every detail so I don't mishear words, and sometimes the subtitles reflect the script but the actor will say something different and it's cool to get to see where something has been improvised. I can see the lyrics to music that plays in the background too and it has made me realize that a lot of times the song is about exactly what's going on at that time in the film or show and I would never have noticed that before. I get a better understanding of the mood that way. Also, I get song titles before the song plays so if I like it I can easily look it up for myself. It also clears up sound effects, because sometimes sounds are too quiet or too ambiguous but being told what a sound is gives me a better understanding of what's going on as well. It's like I'm getting a book to follow along with the movie and it intensifies the experience. So, foreign films are extremely enjoyable for me, plus body-language is universal.

    Hello to Matt, Craig, Tona, Ernesto, and Cecil!
    Love the show. Working to get caught up on it, and I just finished season four.
    If you do animation again, would you consider "The Mouse and His Child?" It's a strange animated feature from the late 70s that acts as a weird introduction to philosophy for kids.

    The remake (‘Let Me In’) stands out in my mind as a great horror film. Like the original, there’s this sinister twist on the love story: you know that the boy loves the little vampire girl, but you don’t know if she loves him, or if she might be purely interested in using him for self-preservation. The ease with which she discards the older man, presumably after years of companionship, after he fails to provide for her tells you that she might just be a real, literal monster. The director alludes to the vampire’s dark intentions with the repeated ‘Now & Later’ candy bar references. It symbolizes the start of the boy providing for little vampire girl, but the jingle also applies to how she treats her victims and caretakers; “Eat some now, save some for later.”

      I thought that at first too-- but I think that he wrote them a 5 page letter about the brilliance of the potato chip sketch, which they weren't sure if it was genuine or a troll, considering the sketch didn't make many waves. I think. They remembered the letter because it seemed so crazy, and referenced it in an interview, and it was Craig that wrote it. I think so, anyway, it was difficult for me to figure out what they meant.

    It's probably a thought echoed throughout the comments but i find this movie terribly sad.
    Oskar is now her caretaker like the older man. He will age , taking care of her by killing until he can no longer do so and she finds another like she most likely has many times before. I know the novel surely explores this but i much rather look at it through the context of what we have in the film.
    Oskar's life is over, stuck in a childhood love and devotion that he will never be given a chance to out grow.
    She is his first love, She has protected him , killed for him, and now he'll spend his life doing the same for her.
    It's romantic but so very sad for him.

    I think she "let the right one in" but it is not a story of young love for her. She is a vampire and needs a caretaker to survive in the modern world. Her former caretaker I assume she manipulated in a fashion similar to Oscar. She needs someone that devoted to her that they will not betray her. Picking a bullied boy and sticking up for him, essentially giving him power and safety, she gets a life long devoted companion.

    One of my all time favorite movies, and I am glad you guys have finally experienced it. Slightly disappointing that you glossed over the issues of gender identity and sexuality in the film, which contribute to the greater theme of what it means to be human. This element of the film was largely whitewashed in the remake, along with the pedophilic relationship Eli uses to manipulate Hakan, the old man. It feels very dumbed down for American audiences.
    If you enjoy the film, I highly recommend reading the novel on which it is based, which it far more sprawling, delving into multiple storylines of characters that interweave. The film wisely chooses to focus mainly on Eli and Oskar's relationship.

    • @Fastwinstondoom
      @Fastwinstondoom 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can it really be said to be a pedophilic relationship? Hakan was once in Oskars place I believe. That's the true horror of this movie for me, the seemingly endless cycle that is hinted at.

    • @Nerull
      @Nerull 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Fastwinstondoom The film leaves their relationship somewhat open to interpretation, at least as far as his motivation goes, but it is clear that Eli does not actually care about him, and just uses him as a tool. One can take a cynical view, and interpret Eli's whole relationship with Oskar as just more manipulation, that he is being used just as Hakan was, but the romantic in me wants to believe that Oskar truly does mark a break in the cycle.
      The remake retcons American-Hakan's back story by showing pictures of him and Chloe Grace Moretz together as children, which is just lame.

    To be frank, the American remake is an absolute trainwreck and an outrageously disrespectful mockery of the original. It takes the delicate and romantic plot of the original, and turns it into a cheap, knock-off, scary to be scary, VAMPIRE flick. If you really think about it, "Let the Right One In" isn't really even a "vampire" film. It purely is a romance horror film that HAPPENS to have a vampire character in it. The American version does the exact opposite. Completely obliterates the substance of the original to make a buck. Honestly, it is a quintessential example of a shitty American remake: a remake...just, because. Because. No hate towards the actors; in fact, I quite enjoyed their performances. Also, I understand the potential fact that the writers may have WANTED to purely create a horror flick. However, this does not seem to be the case. It is clear in the narrative of the American remake (however little attention or substance it received) that the original focus of the two main characters' relationship was the primary focus. However, so little care and time is given for the relationship to develop and come to fruition that including the narrative was useless and severely lackluster at that point.
