    I theorize the reason Ash tried to kill Ripley with a rolled up magazine was because Synthetics aren't supposed to be programmed for violence. He has no idea how to "kill" a human since it's not in his programming. The best he can do is emulate what he saw the Facehugger do. It's similar how in Aliens when Bishop is offered a handgun. He just inspects it for half a second and passes it back, as if to say "my programming doesn't let me even understand how to use this."

    • @limlaith
      @limlaith หลายเดือนก่อน +100

      That's an interesting hypothesis. I thought Ash tried to kill Ripley that way was because the magazine was the most immediate weapon to hand after he had whumped her and dragged her to that table. He was clearly programmed differently, is what I'm saying. Bishop's model had "fixed" the pesky unreliability of the earlier model. 😊

    Psychology graduate here. At the time of Alien 3 being made in the late 80s early 90s, they did believe that the XYY chromosome was linked to higher levels of aggression, & higher levels of aggression was linked with higher incarceration rates. This would later be pretty much universally dismissed in the 2000s.

    • @retsaMinnavoiG
      @retsaMinnavoiG 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +34

      They usually have significantly elevated levels of masculine androgenic hormones (namely testosterone).
      It's well established that a persons aggression, motivation and confidence is strongly linked to testosterone levels.
      While high testosterone levels doesn't equal criminal, most populations within a jail do indeed have elevated levels of testosterone.
      Testosterone is generally thought of the hormone that turns somebody into a 'hero' or 'villain'. It might make one man run into a burning house and another man try to become a drug dealer and kill his competition.
      I'm certain that if you were to do the research that XYY is over represented in the justice system but also things like firefighting or professional sports.

    in the first Alien movie, the reason the Xenomorph is so lethargic and so much slower at the end of the film is originally the Xenomorphs were supposed to have an extremely short lifespan so by the end of the Xenomorph was pretty much on it's deathbed so that's why it was so much easier to kill at the end of the film. Also, edit in the extended cut of Aliens it's revealed that Burk had intentionally sent the colonists to the derelict alien spaceship due to Ripley's story hoping he could acquire the Xenomorphs with the intention of getting a good bonus.

    They do explain why they just can't leave the planet in Romulus. The reason they are going to the station to begin with is to steal Cryo pods in order for them to sleep through interstellar travel since it takes years to go anywhere. The company itself must have all available sleep pods on the planet, so any regular person with a ship can't really go anywhere without them.

Often do we have equipment that would help our jobs 1000 times over. Making what we do so much easier, but for whatever reason we can’t use it. That is accurate. There is a clear distinction between characters and a development of them that feels missing in the other movies, and the goofier, dramatic style of the movie actually helps with that. I actually find the crew interesting unlike a lot of the alien movies where, except for ripley, the cast feels like a squad of crash dummies which exist solely to get killed. Dude, the company is already aware of the potential Alien ship on Lv426 long before they even find Ripley, in fact, there's a lot of evidence that actually implies that the company already knows about Lv426 before the crew of the Nostromo are even woken from cryo sleep, just watch Ash very carefully in the first film and you will very quickly pick up on that seeing as he is assigned to the crew unexpectedly days before their mission and is the first person to point out that mother wants to talk to Dallas (with an unusual amount of enthusiasm at that). He literally directly guides every event to allow for the story to progress the way it does. It's pretty safe to say that they sent colonies to LV426 with the express intent of finding said ship and they definitely never gave a fk about loss of life in the process of doing so. Even in the second film, when 'Al' is asked by his co worker about the mom and pops survey team that consists of Newt's family, they make it very clear that the company has been sending teams out regularly to survey the planet's surface (clearly in search of the Alien vessel) long before Ripley is even interviewed about her experiences...

    Alien and Aliens couldn't be more different films, but manage to perfectly tie together what are essentially slight twists on a haunted house/slasher style horror movie and a classic war film implementing the trope of a top secret mission behind enemy lines where everyone is expendable for the mission to succeed. The connective tissue of Geiger's amazing design work does so much heavy lifting in these films, making Aliens seem like a direct visual expansion from Alien, building on what we saw on the crashed ship and the physiology of the creature itself. As if that isn't enough, we get an incredibly strong and iconic heroine, played by the perfect actress for the role being directed by 2 of the most acclaimed visionary directors of all time. These movies are so special, like lightening striking the same place.

    1) Ash didn't change the mission objective - the company always had that as an hidden priority to possibly develop biological weapon from alien life forms. Killing two birds with one stone, getting ore and invaluable living organisms. It's likely that all company cargo ships had a synthetic on board to ensure that this objective is upheld if organisms of this nature were encountered while in deep space (they probably didn't expect these highly predatory beings though) and with the main system, Mother or whatever, scouting and scanning for it. If the crew can't be brought back alive or needs to be killed (to protect the specimen) than too bad. This is just to really hammer in the horrible corporate mind set of these company people. "If the trade-off for human lives is a boat load of money then who cares if a few people die?!" Aliens is identical in that aspect. If Burke had successfully brought back the specimen, nobody would've cared a bunch of terraforming colonists or marines died. Profit is the priority, the end.
    Also, watch the Director's Cut. You get the first attempt at explaining how the eggs come to be, i.e. it's people morphing into them. Ripley comes across a lair (same alien-secreted resin structures seen in the derelict ship and in Aliens) where she sees Dallas half in the process of morphing and he begs for death.
    2) The company lost contact with the colony because Burke, upon learning of the existence of the alien form from Ripley, sent a message to have colonists (which just so happen to be Newt's family) go check the location of the derelict ship, which they did and brought back a face-hugged explorer. They must have went back later and brought back more, because there are 3 dead specimen and 2 live ones in the infirmary when the marines get there. This is all explained in the Director's Cut, by the way. If you haven't seen that version of the film then you are truly missing out. So much more context for the connection between Ripley and Newt, because Ripley use to have a daughter which died of old age during her 57-year cryosleep.
    3) While Alien Resurrection is pretty bad, it's a guilty pleasure of mine... It's so goofy! But, I genuinely like the idea of a person with xenomorph traits, like the hive mind connection, the genetic memories, acidic blood, etc., but also all the failed effed up clones...
    4) Prometheus looked so promising, going back to explore the Space Jockeys - that it was such a monumental letdown still hurts to this day... I cannot even begin to explain the stab to the heart that was. The characters are so stupid and horrendously incompetent (not quite as bad as Alien Covenant, granted) and the movie happening entirely relies on them being stupid...That's... stupid. Oh and, the Engineers being pissed off we killed Jesus, who was an Engineer, 2000 years ago and that's why they want to destroy Earth, it's so ridiculous it hurts! Yeah, this weird meld of religion into the Alien franchise just doesn't work IMO, though exploring creation, and a creation meeting its creator (also mirrored by Fassbender's character) is interesting, but ruined by pretty much everything else.
    5) Alien Covenant... The worst, just the worst.

It does make sense how none of them ever found it, given there were only 70 families on the entire planet, and that they probably werent there to go exploring, and it explains how they did find it when Ripley showed up, again, because the guy ordered them to find it after hearing Ripley's story.

And when Ripley burns him with the propulsions of the shuttle, you can se how he just drift away in space, it's not like he got desintegrated by them. Aliens is the winner for me. I've seen that film so many times that I probably think it's my favorite film of all time. Even better than predator and Terminator 2. I only wish I saw it in the cinema when it forst came out.

    Explosions in space are more spherical if anything, and since it's a ship full of oxygen, there would be some degree of fire. A fuel oxidizer would create a massive fire ball too, which is almost definitely part of the engines.

    34:07 actually I think the reason Ripley goes berserk over the queen's eggs is because just as she and Newt are about to leave a single egg hatches. Ripley then tilts her head and torches everything, having been pushed over the edge just enough.

    Ripley's perfectly happy with the agreement but as she's backing off an egg opens looking to ambush. So Ripley gives a "ffs, really?" look and starts torching.

    The museum of pop culture in Seattle had a Xenomorph suit from aliens 3 i believe, and a facehugger prop from every Alien movie. Walking through their horror exhibit was what made me love the tension filled dread of even the worst horror movies.

    It might not be the best “alien” movie but Prometheus is probably my favourite movie in the series. There’s just something about the mystique and lore of the world that I find so captivating. Not to mention the movie is outright gorgeous. The practical effects and even CGI still hold up really well imo

    19:49 Others have already probably mentioned this, but in the extended version of the movie it is explained that the douche character sent out a message to the colony to check out the coordinates where Ripley said the alien ship would be, after which the ship is found by the colony.
