Now, don't get me wrong Matt's a great drummer but you certainly do not get enough credit. Holy shit you're what I aim to be (doubt I'll ever get there lol). Thank you Travis.
You have astonished me since day one brother a lot of people don't realize, but you're creating the 'stereo' vibe for drums live, that's astonishing. some things attack my left ear some things attack my right usually this only possible through producing. But you achieved a way to do it live that not a lot of people can re-create.
Man, those 18in K dark crashes are probably some of the best sounding crashes my ears have ever heard. Thank you for putting them back into perspective for me.
Can't believe you have such power in your doubles. That 1:21 KKKLRLL RRKKKRR fill is powerful! Will BH / BF get me there or is there another exercise for this?
Seriously good and unlike some of the other posters, though I am sure not all, I play although when I was playing regularly and lessoned up to my eyeballs I never played this well. It is a joy to listen.
I can't even count how many times I've watched this. My all time fav drumming video, the grooves are brilliant and perfectly played. You're definitely my greatest inspiration Travis. Fuckin' insane...
Man, I have wondered for quite some time - what's the idea behind the snare in sections like :15 - :43? I think it's measures 5-15 on the sheet music. Like, I can read the sheet music, I can sonically hear their placement, but I'd love to know why you chose to have the snare hits where they are, the syncopation, and if there was any metric modulation at play that you wanted to put in there or was it just a stylized decision made on a whim? Either way, I love your drum parts, and often find myself listening to them when I've hit a wall in writing. I love taking elements from my favorite music and trying to incorporate them into my own music, in my own way. So for me to take a similar approach to snare hits in my video-game-esque music, I need to first understand why you chose to do it in the first place. Thanks for the literal hours-on-end of video content I've rewatched, over and over again, marveling at how you write your parts. I love them, and I love the little bits of info you give in the description. You've helped me get past many bouts of writer's block.
That was in the original draft of the programmed drums, so it was Misha's idea. I remember back then he liked to append the end of a guitar phrase with a snare hit (placement varying); that concept is largely in play there.
@@TravisOrbin I appreciate the response! Do you have any videos/resources that go into your approach for writing drum arrangements? I'm sorry if you already have vids up of it, there's just a lot to wade through already if so haha (not that that is a bad thing!)
@@jimmsupreme I do not. It's a giant confluence of things which is constantly mutating, but suffice it to say the three main influences: the music itself, my own catalog of drummers and other musicians, and my knowledge of rhythm theory.
I think I'm slowly starting to feel satisfied because you have started posting tracks of whose composition I absolutely love!!! Gota say the 20 something overzealous drummer did pay you well in regards to creating some amazing parts hehehe..... but really looking forward to your Zyglrox playthrough, one of my all time favourites. Stay awesome man!!
every single song. awesome dude I'm attempting to learn this currently and some of the lock and grooves are just so unpredictable, the intervals and accents just draw me. you stand out man best drummer around right now imo, not to just play it, but to create it, or ratjer, compose such masterpiece! a true inspiration

@Chris Isler My general cymbal sizes haven't altered, but I've always liked big drum tones. Both change depending on the session/music, really; I'll tune up or use bigger/smaller cymbals if it sounds appropriate.
Siiiiiiick! Gotta love K's! I've made a conscious effort to take your advice and play your set up in my second project. Working out well so far. 13 snare, 14,16 floors and a 22 kick.
+Travis Orbin hey T i'm curious about the drum heads and muting you use. especially on the kick and in this video. Is that listed on your site? Any info would be greatly appreciated. +Max Sherman Yep, my preferred heads are listed in the equip lists. That ply amount is a little higher than usual, so your drums might be loud but they're gonna be a bit higher by default. I'd get some Vintage Coated Emperors and tune those babies until the wrinkles disappear and add a little Moon Gel to taste.
Yes! I've been waiting for this since I first saw your Icarus Lives video. Absolutely phenomenal playing dude, how the hell did you come up with some of those fills? I literally burst out laughing on a crowded bus when I saw that first "freak out".
Travis Orbin Well this was the second song I ever heard that featured your playing (the first being The Walk) and I could never figure out how to play any of the fills back in the day, when I first heard the outro to Light I remember thinking "This is amazing, why don't I know who this drummer is!?". So it's great to finally see a playalong to help me visually grasp some of the more challenging parts. On a side note, I noticed you don't choke up on the sticks as much as you used to. Is that a conscious decision or does it vary?
Hey Travis, love you work, follow you a long time, iv'been trying to figure out that fill at 2:26, can you give me a light please? sorry to bother! keep it up! thank you!!

Hey Travis, I noticed you put moon gels on the drums under the mics, is this a space saving reason or is there a cool sonic reason?
