I think they would be more technical and instrumentally pushing boundaries. Matt is great but brought that mainstream appeal along with Spencer in my opinion
“Some Select Periphery Playalongs” seems like only yesterday! Glad I can finally see Insomnia in all its glory. Your footwork at the end especially is second to none.
@@mikebarnes7441 It's actually a really old song! The original song dates back to when was uploading songs to Soundclick as Bulb. The song was reworked for Periphery III.
i have never seen another drummer as controlled or composed as Mr Orbin, this is modern progressive drumming at its absolute best. oh and kit sounds killer :)
This is so damn good. Mind blowing man. The opening of “Absolomb” is crazy. I love how it starts and then you just fall in with it. “Insomnia” is insane as well.
I think I have commented on this very track before but gd man. This version is truly incredible and inspiring. You deserve a lot more recognition and respect than your getting at 12,000 views....
Hey Travis, could you explain your setup in a video, maybe? I can't tell if you're left handed, right handed, ambidextrous, if you're left foot or right foot lead, if you're a shape shifting alien or brother to king Leonidas or if instead of drumsticks you just peel the bark off of trees and play with those. You got mad skills and sound great, of that I'm sure.
In this case it is a mistake and a damn travesty, haha. I'm sure it'll be a solid album, it's just that Colour of Shape is one of my all time favorites - at least partly because of your ridiculously tasty playing.
Travis, any chance of some insight into what's happening at 3:16 - 3:26? I'm having trouble figuring out where the true pulse is in the hi-hat-ride polyphony. (Of course, this is phenomenal from beginning to end, but that should go without saying.)
Oh man, I'm excited for the Racecar playthrough! That was one of the first Periphery tracks that really drew me into their sound. Any idea when you might be able to bang that one out? By the way, it's been a while since I kept up with your gear. Are you not using corpsmaster sticks anymore? Sick stuff as always Travis!
I don't know man, it's been a decade since I was knee-deep in this stuff. If I had to quantify I'd say 75/25? Easiest way to decipher is to listen to the original Bulb demos then watch my vids.
@Travis Orbin do you play any live music? or is it mostly through your channel. I'd really love to know where and when I could come watch you play drums, for any band literally..
+Travis Orbin I watch a lot of your Periphery Covers and I'm a really big fan of your drumming. You're incredible! I have a little question to your cymbal stack. I want to stack a 18" China (bottom, upside down) and a 16" O Zone Crash (top, normal). What hardware should I take for it and what hardware do you prefer?
I feel as if Travis would've been perfect for Periphery Self-Titled, but a bit off sounding in the later albums, since much of l the material wasn't as technical and unorganized (vocals weren't really held to thought when Misha wrote Periphery.) I feel like Matt really fixed that problem in his style with the more melodic and chordy stuff, and though Travis is undoubtedly a phenomenal drummer, and I do prefer his style, I feel like Periphery wasn't the right place for him, at least after self-titled, and I feel like Matt was meant to be the drummer of Periphery all along. Well, Travis, good luck to you in all, I hope you can take your talent and make something extraordinary out of it.
Its absolutely amazing and technical and fucking perfectly played but somehow it misses a groove... Or the feel of the song. I don't know. It can be because I've been feeling ill lately. Can it be maybe the compression that is just overdone? I miss this level of dynamics
Quick question about how you composed the insomnia outro: I keep hearing the china hits on the final bar as a 3/16 metric modulation, why not just call the half note triplets quarter notes in a 3/4 time signature and make the china the modulation? Or am I being really dense and missing something?
Man I dunno why you left Periphery Such a sick drummer. I loved you in Sky Eats Airplane, but considering how they didnt really do any real new material since you joined them...
They were looking for a less robotic drummer with more feel, so they proceeded to produce all their subsequent albums with quantized, sample replaced drums with zero humanity or personality?
+Pellegrini Post I think they just wanted someone that was good at making the "duck" face while drumming.....Halpern is good but as I've heard someone say "he looks like a retarded trying to eat ice cream"
Do you put up any padding to try and dampen the natural reverb? Or do you have a special way you either place the mic's or special effect you put on to get rid of some room reverb?
I've two panels up on either side of my kit (you can see one from the side angle close to my ride), that's it. There's a bathroom adjacent to my live room in which I place room mics; these provide great natural reverb.
That intro roll to Absolomb is absolute bomb
Absolute Bausch&Lomb
Intro blew my head off
Damn. I wish I was half this good at anything.
You rock at TH-cam commenting!
It's incredible what humans can do with enough focus
I wonder what would have happened if Travis never quit periphery
Ikr? He's an amazing drummer. Not taking anything from Matt of course but they are both geniuses.
I think they would be more technical and instrumentally pushing boundaries. Matt is great but brought that mainstream appeal along with Spencer in my opinion
I like a respect Matt very much, but I think periphery would have been better with Chris and Travis for my personal traste
Honestly I would say they simply would not groove. I don't know if this is supposed to be a show off cover, but this doesn't work. I am sorry.
@@sebastianschlenger8935 you have no idea what you're watching it seems

Feels like another lifetime to me! Haha. Glad you enjoyed it pal.
ur not human. dude ur the definition of "best drummer ever" under the dictionary now yo! haha love ur playing n channel. thank you, Travis. :)
That china sounds amazing!
Oh yea i guess we are getting a 15 min special next. Great stuff as always
Your drum sound is out of-this-world good
Thankya kindly!
One of my all time favourite drummer 🙏
i remember hearing this stuff on myspace back in the day.
Me too. Upsetting how fast the time slips away
I'm confused. Absolomb isnt that old of a song unless I'm mistaken
@@mikebarnes7441 It's actually a really old song! The original song dates back to when was uploading songs to Soundclick as Bulb. The song was reworked for Periphery III.
You're spoiling us man! I've been waiting for this one since that ollllllld video of you working on the end of Insomnia.
Enjoy!

Thanks, Alan!
It’s been a long journey bro. Racecar is next and I can’t wait
Indeed, it has!
Oh shit the Periphery song by the best drummer.. OHSHIT
You're still the best brother!
Aw, many thanks!
I still have your drum lessons that you sold many years ago hahaha and also your poster hahaha!
(fan boy-ing)
Great drumming as always! The cymbals pump a lot.
Insomnia is so insane - watching this gives me chills
I have never heard anything more groovy in my entire life... that's incredible.
Incredible! I wish I could watch the intro to insomnia in slow-mo. and the ending of that song is brilliant
You can notice at some point there was a another guy in the room but got vaporized by the intense drumming, only his left shoe remains.
lulz
Such an inspiration, incredible as ever!
Many thanks!
Amazing work and writing as always. The break starting at 6:26 is sick.
And that china sound is damn seducing :P
Cheers, man!
your cymbals sound AMMMMAAAAZZZZZZIIIIIIINNNNNNNGGGGGGG

Hahaha. There's a vid on my channel: "Setup Explanation".
Thanks, I'll check it!
Lmao
Strelock, can you ask travis to make a video about his setup?
So lovely! Tight, smooth and fast!
That’s amazing, looking forward for Imaginary 🙌
Dude! I love your style! You have an awesome groove in all your videos!!
His feet don’t fucking move with that double kick. That is skill that is fucking next level
not even a single second into the video and i'm already all moisty
LOVE your playing! And you foot technique is AMAZING! Please do more :)
I like his shade of blue on the wall
Hot damn! Insomnia always melted my face
Sorry about that!
Apology accepted, I've learned to live with it. 😂
Unrelated: I'm pretty bummed that I won't hear your drumming on the upcoming Intervals album.
It is what it is, man.
In this case it is a mistake and a damn travesty, haha. I'm sure it'll be a solid album, it's just that Colour of Shape is one of my all time favorites - at least partly because of your ridiculously tasty playing.
I appreciate that. Pleased you dig that album so much :)
4:44 absolute beast
I can't play it, I couldn't write it, but I can hear it and fuck i love listening to it!!

Just plain ol' 16ths with the ride on the upbeats, then a brief change to 16th triplets to spice it up before the reprise of the intro fill-in.
Ah I see, so simple but so effective! Thanks!
how can you play such songs by reading their drums notes? that's insane
kshayk0
Drum notation is really simple actually.
He's not likely reading note for note, a lot of this will be memorized so it's mostly just for some reference along the way.
Hahahaha site reading mate. Any drummer whose had proper lessons will have had to do this in exams and lessons
same as reading regular music: once you get used to it, it becomes another language in which you're fluent, & can follow realtime.
He lives in slo-mo
Your precision is terrifying
God dammit dude. Again. Well done.
Cheers!

Very soon. Still rocking SRH2s/Hammers, always! Thanks!
freaking love these parts, how much of this is your writing vs Misha's programming?
I don't know man, it's been a decade since I was knee-deep in this stuff. If I had to quantify I'd say 75/25? Easiest way to decipher is to listen to the original Bulb demos then watch my vids.
Travis Orbin that's cool man, I'm constantly blown away by your technical creativity, think you'll work with Misha again sometime? ;)
not only is the playing fantastic, but you are jacked asf look at those arms man. Literal gigachad hair too. You look like Marcus Aurelius
Travis! Any suggestions/warmups on how to build towards that ambidextrous foot technique?
Can't wait for Racecar
Recreate anything you stumble onto/play naturally with your dominant limbs with your non-dominant limbs.

Just to be able to sight read like Travis does. He's like Neo reading the code of The Matrix..
Racecar is next? So I'm assuming it's gonna be a while until the next Video
I still prefer this version of absolomb
Leonidas, Sir, have you met Matt Garstka? :3
I have not.
4:16 insomnia
Travis, I have to know what kind of stack that is...
insane. are those the Mike Mangini sticks?
SRH2s
How.... Just how....
What’s the China on the right???
I dont get it, he was a drummer for the band before a single album but now he is doing official looking ''play alongs''?
Any sample replacement, or just really really really good playing? :)
Hell naw.
I'm working out,do you like creatine Travis? I resond to it very well.
Your my favorite drummer ever!
Fact you work out is inspirational. 💪
Never tried it, but thank you!
Is the last one going to be Buttersnips? :(
What Toms and bass drum does he use?
Pearl Reference Pure

Matt halpern is a great drummer. I still wish you were in the band though. Love your videos great stuff regardless.
Hi Trevis. Do you use konnakol?
I know the basics of counting, but I do not actively utilize it.
The way you ghost the snare is allot like the sikth album from 07ish
Superlikes!!
What microphone settings do you use to capture the sound of the cymbals so well?
The Taylor Larson template, integrated with Orbin technology.

You could interpret it such, but it’d change the relationship between rhythm/tempo i.e. a tempo change would be required to notate it that way.
Aquaman can also play drums it seems.
ITS A GOOD'N
Honestly like this better than the P3 version, sorry Matt.
You remind me of Leonidas.
Man I dunno why you left Periphery
Such a sick drummer. I loved you in Sky Eats Airplane, but considering how they didnt really do any real new material since you joined them...
So, I quit the band so they could find a new drummer? Interesting.

Pellegrini Post bullshit
Please Guys....neither is travis' playing robotic nor is Matts drumsound "sampled and quantized" keep it polite :)
+Pellegrini Post
I think they just wanted someone that was good at making the "duck" face while drumming.....Halpern is good but as I've heard someone say "he looks like a retarded trying to eat ice cream"
You'd be one of the ideal ones to replace matt halpern temporallly at least
there's just something really hauntingly soulless about your playing
Hahahaha!!! 😂 right!!!!
He relaxed as a sea turtle trynna get away from a tiger shark 😆
sterile af, giving more attention to that sheet music than the skins

Travis Orbin Thanks man!! I'll probably have to readjust my kit next to my bathroom next time recording, just to try it out.
Hell yah, give it a go.
