It's not just the professional video composition; but your ability to find the details and bring them back the books. Your enthusiasm and positivity are absolutely infectious (in all the right ways). I love how closely Lauren is able to watch the show for parallels and notes. This helps further establish that the show runners are trying hard to put elements in there that reward close watching. Even though some of the larger structural pacing and production elements mean it didn’t land 100% in season 1, it suggests the possibility of stronger seasons to come.

    Rand realizing that he can't take Egwene's free will away is one of the best things in the entire season and is SO thematically relevant to literally the entire book series. I can put up with some teen drama for that payoff, zero regrets.

    • @LaerenMisha
      @LaerenMisha ปีที่แล้ว +8

      In the books, Rand doesn't realize this until he sees Elayne's eyes. But he does try it. At least in the TV series, he knew enough to not even try it, and I think that 10000000000x better, as it's much more of an aware Rand than the stumbling stone hearted nitwit in the books.

      I wonder what this will mean for the Maidens of the Spear/Rand storyline from the middle of the series? I guess Rand hasn't generalized the lesson he's only partially learned in the finale of season 1, applying it only to someone he loves and empathizes with on a sufficiently deep level? Or the aspect of them deliberately sacrificing their lives protecting him is "going too far" in terms of making their own decisions in life?

    I agree with you on Agelmar - I fully expect that he's not dead, and my least favorite thing in episode 8 was the number of people who look like they were dead but clearly are not (Loial, probably Agelmar, and especially Nynaeve). I don't think everything was executed as well as it could have been, but otherwise I did enjoy the season overall, and I thought the way they portrayed the final confrontation with Ba'alzamon, the shadowspawn army, and Padan Fain was more interesting and less confusing than the end of Book 1.

    • @rapunzl347
      @rapunzl347 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes! I hate the fakeout deaths. It detracts so much from the actual deaths. When the characters eventually die, you don’t feel anything.

    • @wotfanedit
      @wotfanedit ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Also Uno lying on the floor twitching from a Myrddraal blade. Once you've seen one fake out death in a show/film it makes the real deaths always feel like "Why could they not just do what they did in a previous episode?", especially when you want to show a meaningful slow death.
      *BOOK SPOILERS*
      I think between Ep 4 and Ep 8 they undermined the very real book mechanic of fake out deaths and resurrections. This will lower instead of raise the stakes for viewers as a result, which is a pity. It's something that will need a well-written course correction.

    I had never heard of the Wheel of Time til the show came along, but have since listened to all the books on audible. I totally get why people have some major issues with the show now I know the full story, but at the same time, I'm glad the show exists as I would never have found this incredible story otherwise.
    The story has such amazing and diverse characters and they've all got great storylines, it feels like this should be quite an easy story to convert to TV, especially as the story progresses and all the different factions start coming into it. Theres so much potential there with all of the scheming from the Forsaken, the giant battles and plot twists especially for people who havent read/listened to the books, if they get this right it could easily surpass GoT due to that shows poor last couple of seasons, but right now the shows nowhere near that level.

    Book spoilers (book 7ish):
    Rand wasn’t exactly “without training” at eye of the world, as he can do things that Lews Therin could, without knowing what they are or how they’re done. (Or Lews Therin can do them through Rand).
    With that paired together with the power of the dead Aes Sedai (and Rand himself, although he was nowhere near his potential at this point) I can easily see him single handedly killing the horde of trollocs and collapsing the rocks. (After all he did create a full on mountain in his previous life all by himself.)

    Book Spoilers: Someone on Twitter gave the idea that Egwene may be using a very non-standard kind of healing on Nynaeve that calls to something very important she does in the last book of the series. Sarah Nakamura came online and hinted that this was, in fact, something they were thinking about. If they go that route, it would explain why Egwene's healing is so poor...she learned it 'wrong', and that can continue to be a source of tension for her until she figures it out at the very end.

      I hope WOT, at some point, goes back to the episodes and fixes these things -just like I have heard George Lucas does with Star Wars. Taking down a notch, the burning in Nyanaeve’s face would help. That way, at least it is clear Egwene didn’t cure/resurrect Nynaeve with tears.

    Since you mentioned those black strings emanating from under "The Dark One", I have a theory.
    What if he made those strings (either from the True Power or the One Power), and when Rand channeled into the sa'angreal, the DO took Rand's weaves through him and then the strings acted as conduits, which is what caused the seal to break. And potentially altered the weaves so that they could break the cuendillar from the seal.
    The DO came prepared, and he knew that the strength of the Dragon Reborn channeled through a sa'angreal would be enough. He just needed to divert it towards the seal.

    My major issues with the show have been:
    -The Aes Sedai wearing dresses the color of their Ajah outside the tower. The whole point (especially for the reds) is to keep that a secret. Plus, it's insulting to the audience's intelligence, thinking they wouldn't be able to piece it together with good story telling/hinting by actions.
    -Padan Fain being cool and calculating, as opposed to insane and unpredictable like he is in the books. He's supposed to be another form of evil almost in contrast to The Dark One, and changing him actually negated a lot of the amazing content they absolutely could've added into the show.
    -Fal Dara: felt empty and small even before it was evacuated, and despite the fact that the Borderlanders are supposed to be experienced with the blight and its threats, they came across unprepared and completely incompetent. I know you mentioned covid and Amazon's reluctance to invest too much (shooting themselves in the foot), but it would've been preferrable to wait and put the show on hold, than to put out what they did. There is also ZERO reason to have the channelers go stand out in the middle of the desert, instead of on the battlements (just plain weird).
    I dunno, there are a lot of things I really like about the show so far. The acting is phenomenal, the diversity is refreshing to see, and the set design and effects (minus the CGI Trollocs at the end) have been awesome. It just seems like the writing has been lazy/misguided, and a lot of changes have been made in the name of adaptation that really didn't need to be (would've taken the same resources and time to keep it similar to how it was already written, as well as being just as/if not less confusing too).
    Just my personal opinion. I'll still watch season 2, but I've felt more disappointment than I anticipated so far.
    Oh, and I don't know what it is, but Loial looks dumb as hell (Just the aesthetics, the actor is excellent). Lol

    I have a theory about the five women taking out an army: they might be showing us two types of circles in the show. The "safe" circles, done the "proper" way, which we see in episode 4 when the Aes Sedai link to gentle Logain, which involves a buffer to keep the channelers from burning out, but allow for drawing less power. And the "unsafe" circle Amalisa did in episode 8, which seemed much more violent and uncontrolled (see the way she grabbed the power from each woman as opposed to the very structured way each Aes Sedai entered the link in episode 4). This kind of circle doesn't have a buffer and allows overdrawing, which magnifies the amount of power available by a lot, but also risks burning the channelers out.
    The story of Eldrene tells us it's possible to accomplish massive feats of the power if you're willing to overdraw and die for it. (We also see some of this at the very end of the book series, but no spoilers). Amalisa was going in expecting to die slowing down the Trollocs as much as possible. She had no reason to do a "safe" circle (if she even knew how). She wanted to go nuclear, and for that she needed to overdraw as much as she possibly could. Her plan was to wait for the trollocs to get close enough and then turn into a literal bomb on their path. This is also why they couldn't be on the wall or in the city. She was planning to blow herself up all along, so she had to be in an open field to avoid human casualties.
    Lastly, this doesn't worry me too much for consequences down the line, because there are few situations where a channeler blowing themselves up (or nearly) while completely ravaging the area around them would be much help to the heroes. There are always innocents and allies you want to avoid killing, and infrastructure you want to avoid destroying, not to mention you ideally don't want to burn yourself out either. Suicide bombers aren't applicable to most circumstances, if you're reasonable that is.

    • @wotfanedit
      @wotfanedit ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is an interesting option that I wish they went with more explicitly in the episodes. It is not at all clear that Amalissa went in expecting to die and intended to either a) buy the city enough time to evacuate or b) take out as many Trollocs as possible in death.
      There are only two wrinkles in this theory, from the way they wrote it in the episode:
      a) Eldrene was in the city when she felt her husband die and killed the Trolloc army from there at a distance - burning out is not a bomb, it's a burn up from the inside, so the women did not need to be in an open field to face the Trolloc army
      b) Amalissa and the circle killed the Trolloc army fully with one lady burning out, and only then overdrew the power and burned out herself and the grey-haired lady. If they wanted to sell it in the episode, Amalissa should have burnt herself out in a final act of sacrifice to kill the army, instead of basically overdosing after the fact.

    • @purpleajah7425
      @purpleajah7425 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wotfanedit Eldrene was in an *empty* city. So she didn't have to worry about killing people. And her death literally destroyed Manetheren and everything in a massive radius around it so it still goes in the "bomb" category in my mind.
      I think the only reason Amalisa didn't burn out sooner is that she had two very powerful channelers in her circle. If it had just been her and the other two (which would have been the case if our heroes hadn't showed up) she would be long dead and would have done much less damage to the trolloc army, leaving the women on the city walls to deal with the rest using the ballistae they'd prepared.
      But I agree we could have used some more clarity around all of it. The fact that we need explainer videos and headcanons to figure it out demonstrates that. They clearly were much more rushed with this episode than the others and weren't able to go through their usual process of getting feedback on the script, using a test audience, etc. I kinda suspect Amazon told Rafe "you get exactly enough money to shoot each scene once and then the season is done, oh and also you have two weeks to finish filming all of it." They had no wiggle room.

    • @wotfanedit
      @wotfanedit ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@purpleajah7425 agreed, it feels likely that this episode was the most under pressure to finish. But it's disappointing that they could have written such a wobbly version in the first place. Well done as usual. I have to agree that the show suffered greatly from COVID and the departure of Barney Harris. I almost wish they boxed the project up to resume once the quality of production, and the integrity of the story could be maintained. However, I am certain that the business side of the project put overwhelming pressure on the staff to put a bow on it. In this type of medium, there is no patch for later, unlike video games. Once the show is released, it's out and there's no going back. I agree that there will be some back-tracking and story patching done in subsequent seasons, but the damage of first impressions is still there. I will continue to watch the show, but I am a wot-nerd and will consume the product no matter what...for the most part. To conclude, I am an avid listener to the books. Listening to the books almost looped with the Expanse mixed in, and other title breaks, (listening to books is my go-to tinnitus therapy) I can safely say I have listened to them several dozen times. Even though the first book is the weakest of the magnum opus, it is still very good. Let's hope the sophomore season of the show progresses on the same scale.

    I really appreciate this kind of deel dive! As a first time viewer of the show and someone who *had* no book knowledge, at the time.. I honestly just had such a hard time connecting to and understanding what motivated *most* of the characters throughout the whole season. And understanding the scope and significance of things in the world. And thus, didn't really *care* about what happened to anyone! Lol. It was so sad & frustrating because I have a good friend who loves the books and that made me very excited about discovering a new fantasy world I could fall in love with and enjoy with my friends! I mostly enjoyed both Rand & Egweyne. Those two portayals felt the most natural to me, perhaps. I really never felt the depth of any other character, save Matt perhaps. Not to compare the shows themselves, but this is what Game of Thrones did very well... they made me care about the people I was watching and understand how they would feel about the circumstances they were put in. They built up the world maybe more slowly, gradually, and in a way that was more effective overall in feeling connected to and understanding what was going on in the story. After the season ended, I decided to try the books because I wanted to know why my friend loves the series ~ and I knew it would likely be the more satisfying version of the story. Indeed, actually understanding who these people were and why what was happening in their world was significant was *much* clearer and made me actually care about them!!! That is all I want! Lol. So, I've rambled on long enough, but just wanted to share my experience with other viewers/readers. I hope the show does a better job filling out these characters and making this world feel like something I care about and want to protect with them. Rather than trying to compel me with a bunch of special effects and action that doesn't mean anything because I have no vested interest in the characters.. I honestly feel like I wouldn't mind if the show was overall a bit "slower" or "limited" in its scope. And built on to events and character moments in a similar way. Less "shock value" and more, "ahh, that makes sense, coming from them," moments. I'd rather wait years for a satisfying character moment, than get one right away that I don't understand or appreciate. Hope this wasn't too harsh!!!
    Also...should I keep reading?? I loved *The Great Hunt,* it was so much fun.. but I'm kind of losing interest after *The Dragon Reborn?* Just curious if anyone has any specific words of affirmation or encouragement that might help me stick with it. There are some spectacular scenes I have enjoyed reading. But then some things feel... differently paced? Or weighed? Like there is a lot of disparity in what I view as significant to the story so far? Ok, now I'm really done. I apologize. Lol.

    I just thought of something, maybe the statue was actually a ter'angreal, a large Well of pure Saidin. Moiraine wouldn't be able to tell of course. If DO manipulated Siuan to send Moiraine to EOTW and manipulated Moiraine to think the statue would help Rand win, it would be a very apt scriptwriting, afterall he is the Father of Lies.
    The seals are not just Cuendillar but probably also a type of ter'angreal with dimensional properties because they can repel/seal the DO's power. And since they were created by the Dragon using untainted Saidin, maybe the first seal can only be fully broken by the Dragon using untainted Saidin, whereas tainted Saidin would be repelled by the Seal. Thus the DO has to manipulate events to make the Dragon Reborn come to the EOTW with pure Saidin. Not just any male channeler, only the Dragon Reborn, and he must be carrying a large enough Well of pure Saidin.
    Imagine the seals as 7 layers of duct tape over the DO's prison, so after the first innermost seal breaks, the DO power can seep through it to contaminate and wear down the remaining seals.

    The thing I dislike about the show is that they are not elaborating key aspects of the lore. For example, what are the "ta'avern"? Who is a wolfbrother? Who are the builders or Ogiers? Why Moiraine can't teach Rand to channel? Why is Rand really mad at Moiraine and Egwene in the first few episodes? It's because he is skeptical of her and Egwene is just following her around like a lost puppy.
    Book spoiler -> Rand is supposed to be stubborn and woolheaded and later in the book we find out Moiraine did give a silver coin to all the ta'avern to keep checks on them and make them compliant but it didn't affect Rand.
    The whole concept of WoT surrounds the wheel , the threads and the pattern but the show surrounds everything around the Dragon.
    Also, book spoiler -> the male Aes Sedai weren't arrogant. The creator or the heavens sealed the dark one in Shayol Ghul and the Foresaken 13 were able to make a hole in it through which Father of Lies was able to touch the pattern that the wheel was weaving. In order to patch that hole, the dragon took 99 warriors with him and succeeded in patching up the whole but ended up exposing the male half of power.
    I think the lore needs to be more explicit here. Min only sees glimpses of the pattern as various images and not the future itself. Perrin felt like a waste of space in the show when he is a careful thinker in the book. The deliberate thought in counter to recklessness of Rand, Mat and Egwene. He is the one who stays much wary of Aes Sedai, especially since Moiraine doesn't trust wolfbrothers.

      The hole was drilled by actual Aes Sedai who thought they had discovered a new power source. I understood it was an honest mistake? Again, unreliable narrators, as Leanfear was one of the leading people on the project; she wasn't yet (known to be) Forsaken at that point.

  • @athomenotavailable
    @athomenotavailable ปีที่แล้ว

    I rethought the burnout thing, I think the show has modified the magic setting to allow an untrained new channeller to channel up to his full strength without being harmed (which seems to be also what RJ was thinking in book 1 considering how much saidin Rand pulled into himself, more than Aginor), but a inadequately trained channeller is highly likely to lose control of the flows, or getting addicted and drawing in past his limit. This also means that linking is a much more risky endeavor than in the books, as the OP embraced will be much higher than what the lead channeler is used to resisting.

Amelisa is a full accepted and quite old, and, being a Sheinaran and sister of Lord Aglemar, she had the ability to choose her own studies, and plenty of reason to focus all her time studying on magic that will defeat shadowspawn. So even though her power was weak, she could be as trained as any battle-worn Green. In fact, she might be more used to doing more with less. I guess you have to make some major sacrifices to be funded by Amazon. It's a shame they couldn't make the show more meaningful because of that. I think Amazon is at fault there. A possible get-out-of-jail-free card they can play for Egwene healing when she's not supposed to have much ability there is the weave imprinting explanation (doing a weave one way first makes you less proficient at it if you try to learn it another way, see Aviendha).
    Book spoilers follow
    I disagree on Moiraine being unsure about whether the Dragon Reborn would be male or female, but only in the book lore because the Foretelling of Gitara Moroso was different than in the pilot script (and obviously missing in the show). You could argue that all the male pronouns were referring to the Dragon rather than the actual baby lying in the snow, but I think it is highly suggestive.
    Also, Nynaeve specifies that Moiraine wanted to know whether any of the boys had been born outside the Two Rivers in Baerlon.
    I think that they're going to power up Fain's dagger to show his increasing abilities over time in the series. The whole insta-death thing isn't demonstrated until the second book anyway and it only really becomes important much later in the books.
    It's probably good to remember that in the books the seals were weakening, and Forsaken being released, BEFORE Rand channels at the Eye and they find the first broken Seal (we will call this one Schrodinger's Seal, because we don't know if it was whole or broken before Rand channels at the Eye), with Aginor and Balthamel appearing bodily there.
    I don't think the books suggest Rand's activity at the Eye particularly aids the release of the Forsaken, but was instead the first necessary step on his path towards the Last Battle.

    Book Spoiler a bit: I really prefer the Rand/Dark One ending in the show. The book is cool, but Rand is so overpowered and doing things he doesn’t learn for a few books. It just doesn’t make a lot of sense. This ending of the show though has such a great similarity to the ending of the series…. It just fits really well.
    I am not fond of the 5 girls vs trollocs….. I do like that they removed the “safety” of a circle. I like the risk it adds to it, and how difficult it could be to trust someone in control of a circle.

    Minor Spoilers: Disagree on Rand’s destroying the Trollocs at Tarwins Gap doesn’t make sense.
    SPOILER NEXT
    It’s paralleled in Book 3 (I think) when he’s getting Callandor and summons a One-Power-Construct to search and destroy the trollocs in the castle, which he’s never able to do again - because those were things Lews Therin could do, not something Rand ever learned how to do - unlike Balefire, which he eventually masters (much to the chagrin of Lanfear, and the detriment of Rahvin). So when he destroys the Trollocs in Book 1 it’s essentially the same thing - those were Lews Therin’s abilities, which he wouldn’t have been able to access before the events at the Eye, much like he wasn’t able to do the things at Falme until he let Lews Therin back in.
    Also: pretty sure that’s not the Dark One, that’s Ishamael. We should see that confirmed in Season 2 (assuming they end with the Horn at Falme and the battle in the sky).

    Thank you again for the unwaveringly exceptional quality of your content. Whenever I get a notification for your channel, I can't wait to find the time to watch it properly (and yes, these videos are very long and for a good reason).
    One point I didn't see mentioned about the quasi-wokeness of the series being at odds with the spirit of the books is how most male characters are near useless at this point, especially compared to their female counterparts. I am behind the idea that the post-Breaking world is not exactly a matriarchal society, but women do tend to have larger say in matters in general because men are not to be trusted after the Breaking. It's a change, but it fits nicely. The major male characters failing and women consistently saving their bacon AFTERWARDS is something else. It is in the spirit of Jordan's work (and my personal worldview, if that matters at all) that men and women are natural allies, even when disagreeing sometimes because of different perspectives. But a bunch of men dying for no apparent purpose on the wall of the Gap and then, separately, a grand total of five semi-trained (Amalissa) and basically untrained (the others) women making mincemeat out of a whole Trolloc/Fade army? This, beyond possibly being a message for the audience, is simply bad writing, namely we need the men to do something obviously unwise so we can have the female channelers do their thing. Imagine Amalissa and Agelmar side by side on the wall, her blasting away at the Trollocs possibly linked but not needing to draw dangerous amounts of the Power. That makes a lot more sense, doesn't it? I don't mind changing stuff, even for possible political messages (I cannot be sure, so I won't insist it's just woke writing) but do it professionally, not at the expense of the writing. Make it look and sound good, respect the audience.

Which is all fine, like you said leashes could be weird to some people for kink or whatever reasons, and it could make scenes more difficult to shoot. I personally think the changes made to what happened at the Eye of the World, and in particular the events that led Rand there, were significant improvements over what happened in the book. It's clear that the entire quest was being directed by the Dark One (who clearly sent Siuan those dreams), and it was very much a "heads I win, tails you lose" situation: any possible outcome would be a victory for the Shadow. Much better than the book, which was just confusing and didn't have much in the way of actual consequences going forward (because Jordan didn't know where things were headed at that point).
    The battle at Tarwin's Gap, on the other hand, was kind of terrible. But I'm willing to accept that at least 75% of that terribleness came from production limitations imposed by COVID-19 restrictions and losing Barney Harris. I almost want Season 2 to ignore certain elements of that battle, so we can pretend that it was handled better. At the very least, they shouldn't consider themselves constrained by what occurred and forced to carry it forward even as budgets and writing improves: just as the first book had unexplained weirdness that was quietly dropped going forward, the show can and should do the same.

    I hated that episode at the time but like it better after watching it again. Hearing that Mat might have been intended to stay in Fal Dara and be the one to confront Fain, and Perrin meant to use his wolf nose to take Lan to Moiraine changed a lot of what I felt. Perrin’s uselessness was so frustrating. Having Perrin lead Lan would have been better. Lots of small things like Nynaeve saying Moiraine had a tell (which is BS) wouldn’t not have rubbed me the wrong way. I had no problem with the scene of the women channeling existing, except I thought it very badly written and directed. You said “clunky” and I agree with that. Also the fake deaths of Loial (withe dagger????!!!) and Agelmar? and Nynaeve healed accidentally by Egwene really irked me. That prologue bothered because the actors had zero chemistry and I thought it would have been better to do the real prologue of EOTW to help us see Rand in a new way. I don’t mind the shielding of Moiraine and I actually liked the ending better than the book. But I agree with weird pacing. Too much time taken with Rand’s Egwene vision. The blight was super cool and I didn’t mind the Trollocs being CGI that much. A lot of what you suggested would have taken a lot more time. I just would have rearranged and rewritten it. Of course that is much easier to do in hindsight.

      I don't see any story reason why Fain would leak that information, though.
      If there were rumors of ta'veren somewhere, it would be a magnet for Aes Sedai which wouldn't be helpful if you're planning to attack the place.
      Perhaps you could explain this as a master plan to get an Aes Sedai to come for the Dragon Reborn and take him to the Eye of the World, but that would be relatively clumsy in comparison because they'd be waiting for an Aes Sedai to turn up while Fain is there to launch the attack.
