It’s almost midnight and I’m fixing to start mine like you did-first time. I love your disposition and accent. Therefore, I’m subscribing. I want to learn to make lemon pound cake and put these on top. I’m doing pears and apples together tonight. Jesus please guide me! I’ll post the results Lord willing.
@@AtHomewithMrsJoan I started back to work (I'm an elementary school bookkeeper), but I'm still watching and enjoying all your videos! Your channel is growing! :)
Your pear preserves look like my grandmother’s pear preserves. I’ve had the lighter colored pears before and the taste is just not quite the same. Only thing I remember her doing I don’t see others do is she had a slice of an orange in each jar and about five cloves in each jar also. She would cut her slices of pear a little bigger than you did. It would be like one slice of pear preserves covered the biscuit. When I would stay with her in the summer she had everything cooked for breakfast before she would wake us up. She also already had all the biscuits buttered and melting. They were the best. She made four jelly and preserves. Pear preserves, peach preserves, strawberry preserves and grape jelly. Her grape tasted just like store bought so I didn’t really eat that one as much. But the other three were Heaven sent. Thanx for the recipe. You are encouraging me to try my hand at pear preserves. Just heard from a friend that he had a tree in his yard that no one ever touched. He offered me all I can pick and carry away. I think I know what I’m doing next week. So do you put anything over the cut pears to keep them from browning like apples do. I heard you say you used lemon juice for that. How much do you use? At what point you think it should be poured over the pears? Wish me luck. Thanx for the video also.
My pears were hard to peel and took a long time to peel. So I kept sprinkling bottled lemon juice on them and stirring them around. Probably totaled 1/2 cup for the whole dish pan one sprinkle or shake at a time. Hope this makes sense. Your comment brought back many precious childhood memories for me. I still butter all the biscuits when they come out of the oven like mama did. Good luck and you can do it!
New subscriber to your channel. Your preserves look like mine. I'm praying I can find some pears this Fall in Texas. My favorite preserves. I found a recipe in one of the Ball Blue Books that mentioned lemon slices. I tried it and loved having a slice or 2 of candied lemons in my jars. I noticed how yours were thicker, which I prefer. I'm sure your cousins were delicious and brought back memories of your momma.
Actually, yours are the perfect ones! Perfect color, and I guarantee the fruit has “candied” and gotten a bit chewy. Very hard to get that texture! You did GREAT!
My Grandma always made this, she put diced ginger in too. Hers was the color of yours and I always cook it to that color because I think its pretty. I'm 72 so you know this is an old recipe. I have some on the stove right now and decided to watch some other folks make it while its cooking.
Different pears makes color. I made some one year using red pears and the preserves were the prettiest color! Yours look delicious. I’m making some as I type 😅
A friend sent me about 10 pears, and I followed your recipe. I must have sliced them thinner than they should have been, because when I cooked them, the slices sort of fell apart. These were ol’ timey pears, that were very juicey, and slightly firm when peeled. I also put a few cloves and some cinnamon in with my pears while they soaked in the sugar. The preserves taste delicious, and my son says they smell like Fall, so next time I will slice them a bit thicker to see if they turn out as pretty as yours. I’m learning too😊
Where are you from?! I love your southern accent! I'm from Georgia and my husband is from California and is always talking about mine 😂 When I heard you talk, I said I know it's gonna be good!
@@AtHomewithMrsJoanI live just across the AL/GA line East of Dothan! I knew you had an Alabama accent! I love it! I’m cooking your recipe right now-hope mine turn out as good as yours!
I wish that I could find some like this to buy. My aunts and mothers were always the darker color just like yours and I loved them so much. No way to find any to purchase. You have to make them yourself.
I answered you yesterday. Don't know where it went?? It took mine 24 hours to look syrupy. Different kinds of pears and I don't know what kind I canned. They were free and didn't ask.
@@AtHomewithMrsJoanI just messaged you on Instagram bc I’m desperate! This morning they are still liquidy. And taste way too sweet. I did 12 cups pears, 6 cups sugar over night with a little lemon. Cooked on low-medium heat for 3 hours and added some cinnamon and nutmeg. But they are not good!
@@Katelyn-tryingtofixthesepears I'm not a nutmeg fan so part of me wonders if that changed something. Again I'm just guessing as this breaks my heart that yours are not good.
I agree, I did not like the nutmeg. I should have thought that through! I am going to dump them back in the pot and replace some of the liquidy syrup with water. Then add pectin. See if that fixes it! I did another batch the same way as you, no cinnamon or nutmeg this time, but I added pectin for this one. Seems to already be jamming up and looking much better this go around!
My mothers and aunts were dark like yours turned out and were Delicious! Nothing on this earth like good pear preserves Wish I could buy some. I don't know if I can cut up that many pears or not. I don't understand why no one seems to make them to sell. Great video! Thank you
Thanks for sharing! Yours looks just like my mother’s and grandma’s!
@@teresamassey2162 You are welcome! Had some yesterday with buttered biscuits!
Your pear preserves look like my family’s pear preserves :) Thanks for taking us along on your first try! Gives me some courage that I can do it too
Thank you!

This is just how my mom makes them and they are divine. I will be making some for the first time this weekend
Let me know how they turned out.
All of y’all commenting about the amount of sugar, you need it to get it thick and it’s not like you’re eating a whole jar of this in one sitting ❤️
You are correct. You only eat very little at a time.
Not complaining! I’m gonna eat a bit more though! It looks delish!

What kind of pears are good for making pear preserves?
I don't know name of ones given to me. I just glady take them.
Did you leave in the bowl on the counter over night or in fridge overnight?
I left it on the counter. My house is kept pretty cool. We didn't have air conditioning growing up and mom left it on the counter.
I think yours looks good but hers may have been sitting on the shelf longer?
Good point.
Hey y'all! On my next try I'm only going to cook my pears 2 hours, not 2 1/2 hours!

Whats the taste difference between the light and dark ones?
To me no difference in taste. Both really sweet.
Yours look much better then hers 🎉
Awe thanks!
Holy shit! That's a lot of sugar! Are you in a race with your cuz to see who can get diabetes or cancer first?
I know. We don't eat a lot of this. Just a small amount. We were trying our mom's old recipe.
Ok good 🤠 I like seeing people make delicious food but wish people to care about their health first.
5 lbs of sugar omg
You only eat a little bit at a time.

I wouldn't give up on them yet! You'll probably see a difference tomorrow.
