Estelle Getty was born Estelle Scher on July 25, 1923, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in New York City, the daughter of Sarah (Lacher) and Charles Scher, Polish Jewish immigrants who worked in the glass business. Starry-eyed as a very young child when her father first took her to see a vaudeville show at the New York Academy of Music, Estelle already had a mindset about her future. She almost immediately started taking singing, dancing and acting lessons and, following her graduation from Seward Park High School, she began building up experience in the Yiddish theater. She even attempted the stand-up comedy stage on the Catskills "borscht belt" circuit in upstate New York, but it was a time of rampant sexism and women comics were a rarity and seldom successful. She wasn't. Her young life took an abrupt, post-World War II turn when she married New York businessman Arthur Gettleman at age 24 in December of 1947 (she went on to use a derivative of her married last name for the stage). Not your typical domesticated wife by any stretch of the imagination, Estelle nevertheless raised two children, sons Barry and Carl, and worked as a secretary for various companies.
While on tour with the play Torch Song Trilogy in Los Angeles, Estelle secured an audition for and won the role of viper-tongued Sicilian mama Sophia Petrillo on The Golden Girls (1985). She nearly lost out on the part when it was thought that she appeared too young to play Bea Arthur's mother. In truth, Estelle was 14 months younger than Bea. Given another go-around, and this time donning a grey wig, age makeup and frumpy apparel, Estelle fully convinced the powers-that-be that she WAS Sophia and the rest is history. The role was a breath of fresh air during an era of strong political correctness. A seven-time consecutive Emmy Award nominee for "Best Supporting Actress Award," she took home the trophy in 1988. In both 1991 and 1992 Estelle won the American Comedy Award for "Best Supporting Actress" in a series. The Sophia character was so popular she even went on to play the impish octogenarian in several other shows, including two "Golden Girls" spin-offs -- the short-lived The Golden Palace (1992) and "Empty Nest". Estelle went on to mother other stars on the big screen as well, including Cher in Mask (1985) and Sylvester Stallone in Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot (1992), in the latter of which she received second billing.
One of her last sightings was in the L.A. audience of "The Vagina Monologues," which starred "Golden Girls" co-star Rue McClanahan. Misdiagnosed as having both Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, it was later learned she was suffering from advanced dementia. Estelle died of complications from her disease just three days before her 85th birthday. Long-time husband Arthur, who was only 5'3" tall himself, never adjusted to Estelle's meteoric rise and the media attention that had accompanied it. He quietly maintained her parents' glass business far from the Hollywood glitz...in Florida. He died in 2004. Lifetime television hosted a "Golden Girls" reunion, but by this time Estelle was too ill to appear. Shortly after her death on July 22, 2008, and in tribute to Ms. Getty, Lifetime, which shows reruns of "The Golden Girls" almost on a daily basis, announced that it would air ten episodes of the series featuring the "best of Sophia". A simple, unadorned service was conducted, as she would have wanted, and she was interred at Hollywood Forever Memorial Park in Los Angeles.

Golden Girls Love my favorite one fan Big 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
I had the GG theme song as my ringtone for a few months. Every time I got a text itll go off and whoever was around me smiled and it seemingly put them in a good mood. RIP to Estelle and the entire cast.
No idea why but grew up watching The Golden Girls in UK. Can you imagine kids today watching a group of older people living / hanging out together ❤️ Good one Scott.
Just that music from the show takes me right back to the 80s
My mum loved The Golden Girls! As a child I was allowed to stay up (the show aired quite late on German TV back then) and watch the episodes with her, before my dad came home from his late shift, I had to rush to bed and pretend sleeping ;-). Thank you Mr. Scott for all your great content! It is highly appreciated, because your way of documenting is one of a kind!! Kind regards from Germany!
I knew Estelle Getty from when I was a teen. Her husband and my father owned willowdale glass in port Washington, New York We spent many times together waiting for her husband and my father to return from a job. I Worked on the invoices while she told me about her adventures in her acting career. When she was in the play mentioned in your video the aids virus broke out. No one knew what it was. Estelle would make chicken soup to take to all her friends who came down with the virus. Estelle and Arthur her husband were at my younger sisters wedding. She once babysat for our younger sister and taught her how to eat a small whole white fish. My sister loved it when Estelle showed her all her outfits and jewelry. She was truly a friend to everyone.
This made me cry, thank you for sharing that very personal story 🩷
Hi Scott, thank you for being so sensitive to the plight of cats.
He is 💗🐈
Catlover here as well 😊
The peacocks are beautiful. Rest in Peace Estelle.
The black cat that lives there is super friendly
Named my daughter after her ❤. The legend lives on.
ty for doing this one! I'm a big golden girls fan... I'm gonna send this to a fellow fan, and i luv the peacocks everywhere..
The Golden Girls...and Alf...they were my favorite shows...and still are my go-to for laughter. To think of her having alzheimers and the signs were there in her 60's while still on the show. So sad. To live but without any memories.... may she rest in peace. And her final resting place is truly beautiful. She definitely will never be forgotten.
Thank you for sharing the cemetery with us, too. Love seeing the cats and squirrels and peacocks.
A cemetery with cats and peacocks? I wanna rest there anyday! Thank you for sharing!!
Me too
Me too.
Maybe the cats were there because Betty White loves the animals and she came around too. 🥰 I like to think that, anyway :)
@@greeneyedsoutherngirl6468 Me too I adore her still!
“Thank you for being a friend” beautiful video Scott,Truly love Hollywood Forever❤ Rest in Paradise Estelle Getty ❤
Although other people already answered your question, Mr. Kats passed away from complications due to aids. The information available to the public in the 80s about HIV/aids was minimal. His activism probably helped so many people become more aware and educated about the illness. Bless his soul, I hope he is at peace. He was also an actor and writer.
I love The Golden Girls so much. All 4 of them. Estelle Getty was in the movie Mask, also. I miss these Golden Girls so much. RIP Bea,Rue,Betty and especially, Estelle 😔
I enjoyed the video very much, but the shot of the peacocks, squirrels and the men passing by was an awesome shot. It was a moment in time that felt very natural.
Thank you Jenny . That man goes with the lawn chair and sits by his wife everyday
@@SCOTTONTAPE that's so sweet! The way they were following him, I think he must feed them (even though you're not supposed to). That, or he's a real life Snow White, lol.

Here in the Netherlands all seasons are on Disney+. Watched 4 episodes before going to bed last night.
It's something I like to do regularly.
I miss the girls still today and yes, I shred a tear watching the 4 episodes again.
At the time I was in my teens and never missed an episode. Now I am still watching all seasons. It's so addictive.
Sophia always was my favourite together with Dorothy. I love them. I hope to see the other's graves as well someday.

Rest in peace, Estelle. God bless her for her work within the HIV community. She passed from the same illness that took Robin Williams. Thank you for honoring her, Scott. Oh, and the cats are amazing. Safe travels.-Joe from Joplin MO
Thank you Joe!
You're welcome. You always bring a bright spot to my day.@@SCOTTONTAPE
no robin williams committed suicide Estelle Getty did not
@@makeupbytony suicide is a side effect of lewy body syndrome. I know Estelle did not pass from suicide, but other causes associated with LBS.

Hi Scott- what a beautiful place to be the rest of your life.
It never gets old Scott, keep em coming, one day I will visit , but as I'm in OZ I'm saving my pennies .
Scott besides your great channel you are a caring soul❤ I want to see Hollywood Forever not only to see the famous graves but the lovely cats!!❤
"Picture it: Sicily...1924". I'm seriously going to make a shirt that says this. My favorite Sophia Petrello quote. Thanks, Scott, for taking us with you! ❤ (And "Thank you for being OUR friend!")
We lived in luwait for 2 years and there were always feral cats around and we always fed them because i love strays but found it sad that in such a harsh climate they more or less fended for themselves.
Great video. 👍🏼👍🏼
Golden Girls was the best show EVER! I know of many people even now that watch this show over many others. Even young people. It's addicting. I hope they never stop showing it. Great video Scott! Oh, and the cats!!! Love them! Also feel the same about anyone that abandons ANY pet. Out pets give us unconditional love. Those people don't deserve the love of a pet. GREAT VIDEO ❤
Scott you are such a good soul. Always respectful with the dead and their markers. I'm so glad you covered Estelle Geddy. I often feel like she's overlooked for her contribution to the series. Thank you Scott😊
🕊️❤️🙏

I love the bird of paradise flowers on the right hand side as you walked in the Cemetery, then you see the Squirrels and then the peacocks, so beautiful, I would love the cats sitting on my grave, it’s so nice that the Cemetery people feed the cats, but it’s horrific that people dump there cats up there, that’s so sad. The Golden Girls was so funny, you grow up with there laughter, RIP Estella Getty💐💐💐 so sorely missed, all the golden will always be with us. Thank you for your fun and Laughter❤️❤️❤️❤️. Thank you Scott for taking us with you, that Cemetery is so perfectly kept, you can see why famous people want to be buried there. All the best xxxxx🤟🏼✌️👍

RIP Estelle Getty # Sophia may she rest in peace 🌹🙏. Thank you for sharing this video Scott. I grew up watching them golden girls for years with my mom and my daughter loves that show as well. You do amazing work Scott you are amazing.❤❤❤❤❤ stay safe out there
HELLO SCOTT!!! still enjoy watching the golden girls! and you ! in tacoma washington.....
The Golden Girls was absolutely one of my favorite shows when it was on. These four ladies made growing old fun. I wish they were all still here. I wish that show would have gone on forever. At least we have the reruns. I miss them though. I love the cats and Peacocks at this cemetery. What is wrong with people who would abandon their pets though? I had a cat a long time ago who escaped on me and came home pregnant. She went behind my counsel TV and had her babies there. I made her a nice box to stay in with her kittens. I wanted to keep them all but couldn't. So, when they were old enough, I took them to a huge and well-known pet store in one of the suburbs. They took them and I often wondered how they were. This was way before pet stores got a bad rap. My mama cat lived to be 21 & 1/2 years old. My daughter was 4 when I got her and was 25 and 1/2 years old when she died. So, cats can live a long time. Anywy, BACK TO Estelle Getty. May she forever rest in peace. She would have been fun to have for a mom! ❤💐
I love the golden girls I have the complete session and watch them over and over again
great video, thanks for sharing, beautiful cats 🐱🐱🐱
❤ i love it already especially when you visit the cats Scott and cannot wait until we dive into this episode
❤ loved watching the Golden Girls!
Still watch the reruns when I find them!
Thank you for sharing this video. Much appreciated. And thank you Estelle Getty for all the laughs!❤️
Thank You Scott !!!
I’M A HUGE HUGE FAN OF THE SHOW THE GOLDEN GIRLS!!👏🏾
All 4 women were my favorite characters from Sophia, Rose, Dorothy especially Blanche!! I even loved Stan bc he kept popping up whenever he wanted to 😂.
The show was ahead of its time in 1985-1992! It touched on a lot of topics we still face today from race, gender, disabilities, AIDS, teenagers not being happy at home, relationships, family, the struggles of limited income for the elderly etc etc… the list goes on..
All 4 are in Heaven together again singing
Thank You For Being A Friend 🕊️
Certainly are a lot of rocks and things left at Estelle's grave, wonderful woman. I hadn't known that information you shared about her interest in HIV. Well done video. I enjoy getting a look at the animals when they are around the cemetery.
My favorite Old Lady of TV growing up...RIP Estelle 😢❤ Thank you Scott for sharing this and Being A Friend. 😊 I love the Cats 🙀 ...im a Cat guy, have 2 cats myself.
You’re a good man!
It took me forever to find Estelle when I wondered in Hollywood Forever. Missed the kitties, lots of peacocks!
I loved the golden girls and I especially loved Estelle in the show. Loved it for half my life, am currently 31.
Estelle was an absolute gem super adorable. I love this video so much. I'm such a big fan of the golden girls And her movies I'm sorry, they are so good. I loved her in mannequin, and her harshness that she poured out and made you love her so much and wish that she was your mother so cute.
"Your heart's in the right place, but I don't know where the hell your brain is."
How amazing that you know all the resting place of every star and take us to visit every one of them ,some of the star I don t know that they passed until you show their final resting place . Thank you and thank you for being so sweet with the cats ,keep up the good work 👍

Loved this video, Scott 😊 I loved the Golden Girls and Estelle Getty's character Sophia is my favorite! Thank you for this video. 🙂
Great actress!
May she rest in eternal peace.
She was also a year younger
than Betty White.
Great video as always,Scott!
Oh my goodness what a hoot she was for sure! “Picture it Cicely 1923”, I loved to her stories after that!!! 😂 What a very sad way to pass away, bless her precious soul. 😇😢 She was definitely loved. Thank you Scott for reminding us about her. It’s nice to always to remember them like this. 🥰💕♥️✌️
Scott my daughter does rescues of cats because they are hard to place in homes for some unknown reason. She has became the "cat lady" of our town lol. She takes ones that are injured or starving and feeds them and lets them stay outdoors on our property in safety! Love all the furbabies out on the lawn!
Rest In Peace Estelle Getty
Thank you for this Scott, I was definitely going to ask if you could go to any of their graves. I adore the Golden Girls 💗
I watch Golden Girls every weekend love that show❤❤❤
Great Video Scott 🥂
Bless Her Heart ❤️
I didn't know about the Lewy body dementia, it's an awful disease. She was my favorite on Golden Girls. Thank you Scott, for the visit with Ms. Getty.
Oh my God this is the first time I watched this one with you look at the rocks look at the love oh my goodness I love it
Years ago, when I was a Home Care nurse, I had a client whom was forced to retire at the age of 95 when she had a heart attack at work. She used to look after the local Catholic Rectories, cook etc. I would come to see this absolutely fantastic lady even on my days off. Something really funny was, she looked EXACTLY like Estelle Getty! People have actually stopped her in public and asked he for her autograph. I enjoyed taking care of her until her dying day and was with her, in my arms, when she passed. She was just a few months short of 100. Thank you for this video and the memories I have of her. Side note, we did watch Golden Girl reruns often together. Thanks and praise from Peterborough Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 ♥️
You’re an angel on earth! 💐🩷
