      But it seems he's on Fuji's payroll. There's no way a pro photographer would be THAT into an X-M1 - it's not a high-level camera, it's aimed at people who know nothing about photography. If you're used to good cameras you'll be disappointed with this camera. Seriously.

    • @mellowmarkable
      @mellowmarkable 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly, it's a perfectly decent camera - but he keeps using words like "awesome" and "amazing" and goes on about the effects filters (which are naff and no professional or serious amateur would ever use them).
      At 5:16 he says "the settings on here is what's truly amazing" - really? Some naff filter effects that almost all other cameras also have?
      What's "truly amazing" about that? Hyperbole.
      This is a good camera for anyone who wants a point and shoot which is better than a compact camera and will take great looking jpegs - but that's it. Nothing it offers is anything that most other similar cameras don't offer and in some aspects it's worse than average (like video).
      Also, no touchscreen, no viewfinder and the wifi app is poor.
      On the plus side - it's cheap (used now as it's an older model), takes great jpegs, has a decent kit lens, 16mp sensor is decent in low light/high iso situations and Fuji makes some good lenses which you can attach to it. I like the 35m f2, but stick a 27mm pancake lens on this and you have a 'compact camera' (albeit one with a fixed focal length lens) which is great for when you want to travel light but still take decent photos.

    I have been using my XM-1 for five years, haven't change anything to it since I first bought it, maybe a few scratches and small dents. But it really shows how great of the XM-1's build quality is.
    However, this is a truly amazing camera, simplistic yet fantastic to use. The quality of the photo is jaw-droppingly great for a camera at this price. Especially in RAW mode, this camera shines. Over the year the sensor is a bit faulty, the software inside sometimes getting a little glitchy. For some way or another, it still holds well with other cameras.
    The only drawback I have with the XM-1 is the low-light performance, that's all. I will be switching to the Sony A6400 in just a few weeks, but this XM-1 will probably be my personal all-time favorite. Particularly from someone who travels a lot and use this camera extensively, I truly enjoy working with it, probably going to get a bit emotional when I make the switch to the A6400.

    Great video! I am having trouble finding my way through lenses (beginnere here), is there an option for a wide-angle pancake lense? That would be my favourite setup for the compactness.

    • @photofonz
      @photofonz  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +LosingMyConnection A favorite pancake prime among Fuji X series shooters would be the XF 27mm f2.8. Combine this lens with any X series body for a nice compact package.
      Another favorite, although not wide angle, is Fuji's XF 35mm f1.4. I've heard it is Fuji's sharpest lens.

    hi i was lookign to enter the mirrorless market as an upgrade from my smartphone. Considering the price of this camera now since it's old, would this be a great beginner camera on a budget? also I will taking this travelling and was looking at shooting some landscape shots. Any suggestions for a budget lens? or maybe a reecommendation so i can see if a second hand one is available. Thanks.

    • @photofonz
      @photofonz  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +julian lopez Yes, the Fuji X-M1 is still an amazing camera, even by today's standard. I'm using mine on a regular basis. It is great for travel since it is light weight and relatively small. The lens on my X-M1 is the 16-50mm. This is a nice focal length range for landscapes. Plus, this lens is very sharp.
      While there are many amazing cameras on the market right now, the Fuji X-M1 still has great value, especially now that you can get these on the used market at a much lower price than what I paid for mine. The Fuji X-A1 & newer A-2 are also worth considering. I see that B&H photo currently has a pre-owned X-M1 body available for only $239.95.
      For travel and landscape photography, I like a lens on the wide side and the 16-50mm is ideal for me. Best of luck and welcome to the exciting world of photography. Once you start photographing and gain more experience, you will know what equipment you need and you may also be able to create beautiful photos with whatever camera/lens are available.

      +photofonz Hi ijust wanted to ask your opinion about the xm1 vs the xe1. Ifound the xe1 can be had for about the same price and was wondering which was better out of the 2? Have you experienced the new firmwarew update to the xe1? thanks

    • @photofonz
      @photofonz  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +julian lopez While I do not own the Fuji X-E1, it does have certain advantages over the X-M1 such as a viewfinder, external mic jack and also does panoramas. The X-M1 has the advantages of a flip-out screen and the advanced filter system. So it would depend what your priorities are.
      The ideal Fuji would be a camera that has a viewfinder, advanced filters, external mic jack (for recording video sound), panoramas and flip-screen. The Fuji X-T10 would be such a camera but has a higher price tag with professional features.
      Since you're looking to move from a smart phone, anyone one of these two cameras would be a big plus.

      @photofonz  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      While I do not own or have not used Fuji's XF18-55 mm lens, so I have not compared it to my XC16-50 lens. For a kit lens, I have found it to be quite sharp. Even though the build quality could be better but for a lens at this price point, I find it to be a bargain. I especially like that the XC16-50 starts at 16mm (24mm FF equivalent). I personally favor this focal length over the 18-55mm.

    I heard you say you own and use the S3 Pro. Which one is better the S3 Pro or the XM-1?

    • @photofonz
      @photofonz  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used both the Fuji S-2 & S-3 professionally for weddings and portraits in the early days of digital photography. Both were outstanding cameras for their day. The S-2 came out in 2002, the S-3 in 2004 I believe. The S2 Pro and S3 Pro are SLR camera bodies and based on the Nikon N80. I still use the S-2 occasionally on small product photography.
      The Fuji X-M1 is a mirrorless camera with newer technology, while it has no viewfinder, it does have a tilt screen and the ability to produce professional quality images. Being mirrorless, it is smaller, lighter, and I really like it for travel.

    how important is to update the bios for xm1 from 1.00 to 1.01?
    and what is the difference?

    • @photofonz
      @photofonz  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The latest firmware update from Fuji's X-M1 that I'm aware of is:
      The firmware update Ver. 1.10 from Ver. 1.01 incorporates the following issue
      1. Addition of compatibility with "XF56mmF1.2 R".
      Improvement of AE accuracy with "XF56mmF1.2 R".
      The firmware update Ver. 1.01 from Ver. 1.00 incorporates the following issues
      1. AF accuracy is optimized for still image.
      2. The phenomenon is fixed that a camera will automatically turn off during "Bulb (B)" shooting with the "CONTINUOUS" setting in "IMAGE DISP."

    Photofonz, I really appreciate your postings as I am looking at upgrading from a Canon T1i with a 28-200 tamron lens. I have sold everything and I am not tied to any manufacturer. I would like to accomplish three things with my new camera. Improve in camera quality, improve image quality and reduce size (if possible). My research had led me to the Nikon D7000 and the Fuji mirror-less cameras. I am curious if you looked at all at the Fuji X-10 or X-20. If so what are your thoughts.

    • @photofonz
      @photofonz  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. The three things you are trying to accomplish with a new camera can be done using the Nikon D7000. I am still a happy user of that camera, but some of the lenses are a bit heavy & large. Although I am not tied to any camera manufacturer, I have been a big fan of Fujifilm cameras since I purchased my first S2 DSLR for professional use when it was first introduced. And, I still use the S2 for small product photography several times a week.
      If I would not own my Nikon cameras and I were looking for a new camera system, I would take a serious look at Fuji’s X series cameras. I particularly like the X-E2. The lenses that Fuji has are amazing. The X series cameras would give you what you are looking for in camera quality, superb image quality and of course at a reduced size and weight.
      It’s starting to look like the new mirrorless cameras like the Fuji X series and some others are revolutionizing the camera industry with their superb performance. I also recently heard of a collaboration between a German and Chinese company called Handevision that will introduce the IBELUX 40mm f0.85 high-speed lens. It is said to be the highest speed lens in the world and made for these mirrorless cameras. It is said to be available by February 2014.
      It looks like the benefits of some of these mirrorless cameras are the reason many pros are starting to go that route. I’ve heard of several pros already selling their Canon and Nikon DSLRs and moving to mirrorless. I like the entire line of the X series Fuji cameras, each one has it’s own benefit of use.

    what's a great lens for taking portrait( full body. Head to toe) blur in the background or
    bokeh with this camera ( fujifilm X-A2 )?

    • @photofonz
      @photofonz  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +My Cherish Life I really like Fuji's XF 50-140mm F2.8 telephoto zoom lens for portraits. Another great fast prime lens from Fuji is the XF 56mm F1.2 lens.
      In short, what it boils down to in getting blurred backgrounds is shallow depth of field. A fast lens when shooting wide or near wide open can do it as well as a longer focal length lens (telephoto).
      My TH-cam video, "Best Camera Setting for Sharp Subjects with Background Blur Part 1" explains this further at: th-cam.com/video/DkDb3BJ_U24/w-d-xo.html

      While I have no experience using the Sony Alpha 5100, I did look at several reviews which have been good. If you are considering the Sony Alpha 5100, also take a look at the Alpha 6000. It has so much more going for it with a viewfinder, external mic jack, supports external flash and more.
      As a Fuji X M1 user, I can tell you I am extremely happy with the still image quality (they are fantastic), plus I find the advanced filters very useful for me, and movies are quite good also with the X-M1.

      Hi photofonz, I really appreciate for your quick reply.
      May I know what is the advanced filters mentioned? Actually my friend also told me that image quality taken by X-M1 is damn nice, especially for the night view, the image quality even better than Sony alpha 5100 by using the same mode.

    • @photofonz
      @photofonz  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jiahao Tan Besides the Film Simulation Mode, Fuji's Advanced Filter system allows the camera to produce various filter effects. I particularly like the Pop Color which emphasizes contrast and color saturationand and the Dynamic Tone filter which creates a fantasy effect by dynamically-modulating tone and contrast.
      Other unique Advanced Filters include: Toy Camera, Miniature, High Key, Low Key, Partial Color and Soft Focus. Yes, Fuji X series cameras are AMAZING!

      @jiahaotan3536 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      photofonz Really thanks a lot for your sharing.
      Last question, do you think we need to buy extra lens for this camera to upgrade the image quality?
      Thanks=)

    • @photofonz
      @photofonz  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jiahao Tan The kit lens that was offered with my Fuji X-M1 was the XC16-50mmF3.5-5.6 OIS. While the build quality was not it's strong feature, it turned out to be a lens much sharper than expected. While this sharp lens can give you superb optical performance, it also has image stabilization, it is very light and makes carrying this combination a big plus for travel and landscape photography.
      When buying extra lenses for this camera, you will be able to produce images with different looks and perspectives. Depending on the type of photography you do and image you are looking to create, lenses have different characteristics. For instance, I mostly prefer, a fast and longer focal length for doing portraits. For the X series cameras I would choose the FUJINON XF50-140mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR telephoto zoom lens. It is very similar to my favorite Nikon lens, the 70-200mm f2.8. Fuji also has a nice prime lens, which is the XF60mmF2.4 R Macro. It could also be a good choice for portraits when you wish to de-focus the background.
      Another great lens for this camera would be the XF10-24mm. It has a nice wide range that would be great for landscapes and travel. Then there is also the XF14mmF2.8 R prime lens for it's ultra wide perspective. While the Fuji X-M1 and the other X series cameras already have the capability of outstanding image quality, different lenses such as the ones I listed above can give your photography a unique perspective, especially if one knows and understands the effects of lens characteristics.

    Great review. My question is, what camera would you choose, Xm-1 or x-100s? what do you prefer? xm-1 is cheaper and more versatile, but x100s has better build quality and is more unique (plus the lens has f 2.0,while the 16-50 of xm1 doesn't)

    • @photofonz
      @photofonz  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both the Fujifilm X-M1 and the X-100S are unique in their own way. The X-100S has a fast f2 23mm lens, which is ideal for street photography and is equivalent to 35mm on a 35mm/full frame format. This is a favorite of many famous photojournalists such as Alfred Eisenstaedt, who preferred shooting a Leica with 35mm lens with natural light. The X100S is ideal for that type of photography plus the outstanding build quality make this an ideal choice.
      The X-M1 however, has lens interchangeability, plus a tilt screen LCD and also advanced filter system. Both are amazing cameras in their own way and capable of producing beautiful and extremely sharp images. I own the X-M1 and am very happy with the performance. I wouldn't mind having the X100S either for photojournalism or street photography. Best of luck!

    How easy it is to use? I want to learn photography more seriously. But DSLR is just a little too steep learning curve. And point and shoot doesn't satisfy anymore. Is this a good choice?
    Also, can this camera produce bokeh and make backgrounds softer with really sharp objects?

    • @photofonz
      @photofonz  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Like most things new, there is some learning involved. But not a huge learning curve here. The steep learning curve is in understanding the basics of photography such as seeing and understanding light, composition and what effect f stops have on your images. And if you would like to learn more about making backgrounds soft in relation to your subject, then learning the effects of different focal length lenses would enable you to choose the right lens for what it is you are looking to accomplish.
      With that said, yes, I think the Fuji X- M1 is a good choice for someone that is looking to move beyond what a point & shoot can accomplish. It is a wonderful camera that has the capability of producing outstanding sharp professional images. Fuji also offers many fine fast lenses that along with this size sensor, would give you nice background blur.
      If on a budget, then consider the Fujifilm X- A1. It sells for about $200. less. Basically the same camera with a bit of a different sensor. The X -A1 also produces outstanding images and takes the same fine lenses as all the X series cameras.
      I believe the Fuji X series cameras have a key role in the future of professional photography.

    Thanks for the great review. I am also in the market for a new mirrorless compact camera and the Fuji X-M1 is high on my list, mainly for its outstanding image quality. Fuji also has one of the best kit lenses, compared to others. I am curious, though, if you have tried the Fuji X-A1, which is identical to the X-M1 in every respect, except for the sensor. The X-A1 has the APS-C CMOS (Bayer) sensor, whereas the X-M1 has the more advanced X-Trans sensor. The price difference between the two models is significant: $599 for the X-M1 and $449 for the X-A1, both with the same kit lens. I guess I am asking if the extra $150 for the X-Trans sensor on the X-M1 is worth it, or will image quality be similar. Thanks again for the review.

      Thank you. That is a great question and observation. I looked at several images taken with the Fuji X-A1 and from what I saw they were also fantastic. For the average shooter, I would say, there is very little if any noticeable difference. Many other photographers feel the same way. When I ordered my X-M1, I pre-ordered the brown line. It took quite a while to get in, so I was about to call B&H and substitute the X-M1 for the X-A1 when I received an email telling me my X-M1 is on the way.
      And yes, the kit lens is amazingly sharp. I'm still lovin' my X-M1. It is as easy to use as a point and shoot while giving professional results.

    Hi there, really excellent review love to hearing you out about camera :)
    My question: i'd like to give my wife a brand new camera, she's an enthusiast of photography at 360°. As i found this camera suddenly it occurred to me: could this be the one? She is anything but a professionist, need to learn the basics etc. would you recommend this camera as a learning tool?
    thanks in advance :)

      Yes, I would recommend the Fuji X-M1 to anyone looking for amazing quality images in a relatively small & light camera.
      If your wife wants to get really serious about photography, I would recommend you consider the Fujifilm X-T1 or X-E2. These cameras are at the top of Fuji's cameras, plus they have a viewfinder. That's one thing that would make it easier to compose and focus your subject. I do love the tilt screen, but the LCD viewfinder is a little difficult to view in the sun. But, if you can live with that, the X-M1/X-A1 is capable of producing sharp excellent images, plus Fuji has some amazing X-mount lens choices, as does Carl Zeiss.

      First, thanks for your prompt reply.
      I've checked the X-T1 but it's totally out of range for my pocket, that's why the X-M1 draws my attention along with the high specs and functionality. For 449€ i can get body and XC 16-50mm lens, sounds reasonable to me.

    @hsienfromspace 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    if the price for the xm1 + a 16-50mm lens is the same as a fuji x30 which should i get? in terms of image quality which is better?

    • @photofonz
      @photofonz  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am a happy Fuji X-M1 user and really like the quality of the images I get with it. However, I think I would be happy with either one.
      While the Fuji X-30 has a newer sensor, it is a bit smaller than the sensor in the X-M1, therefore the X-M1 may give a little better photo quality. I also like the tilt screen on the Fuji X-M1 which the X-30 does not have. But one thing I miss on the X-M1 is a viewfinder and that the X-30 has. If I has to choose between the X-M1 and the X-30, it would be a tough call, I would rather consider the X-T1 or the X-E2, both have the viewfinder and interchangeable lenses with the X-M1. I especially like the 16-50mm lens since I shoot wide for landscape photography when I travel.

      thanks for the reply i would consider the XT1 too but the price is too high the canon 5D mark 2 (2nd hand) is cheaper than the XT1 and the 5D mark 2 is a full frame camera so im really confused. Would you get a XT1 over full frame cameras? I mean lets put aside the bulk and all that but im asking if its worth the price since XT1 is not full frame?

    • @photofonz
      @photofonz  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lim Hsien Good to see you are doing your homework. While the Canon 5D Mark2 is indeed full frame, many pro photographers are dumping their bulky Canon & Nikon Full Frame cameras for the top mirrorless brands such as Fuji X series, Panasonic Lumix and even Olympus. If you are in the market for a full frame, you will probably see prices going down as their demand diminishes and may be a good time to buy if you are in the market.
      If I were starting today, I would take a serious look at the mirrorless cameras, especially the Fuji X-T1. A friend of mine recently bought one. He loves it and hardly shoots his Nikon D3 anymore. With that said, the Canon 5D Mark 2 is an amazing piece of equipment as is the Nikon D4 and both have the ability of producing outstanding images. But, with the DSLR mirror technology becoming obsolete, I would take a look at the Fuji X-T1.

    Is there a viewfinder that can be attached to the hot shoe?

    • @photofonz
      @photofonz  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not aware of any attachable viewfinder from Fuji or aftermarket brand. I recon that's what makes the X-M1 & X-A1 the least espensive of the X-series.
      I'm getting used to using the LCD screen and may move up to a model with a viewfinder should I really need it.

      photofonz Thank you so much Mr Photofonz that was a quick reply. I might go for the x20 which I've found for under 300 pounds here in Scotland. I'll upgrade when prices come down a bit to an X Pro. Maybe I'm just old fashioned but a viewfinder is a must for me.

    is it better than sony nex-3n?

    • @photofonz
      @photofonz  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't own the Sony Nex-3N and can only comment from looking at the specs and reviews that the FujiFilm-X-M1 and Sony-Alpha-NEX-3N have some similarities and both are great cameras.
      Some of the things the Fuji X-M1 has over the Sony-Alpha-NEX-3N are: Higher rear screen resolution, better video capture, has hot shoe for flash, better light sensitivity. Some of the advantages of the Sony NEX-3N: Panorama image capture, longer battery life, smaller size and weighs less and a lower price.
      I am really impressed with the quality of Fuji cameras and their lenses, as are many other photographers. And when moving up to a more pro level X series camera like the X-E2, the lenses are interchangeable. In my case, I am so happy with the quality images from my X-M1 that I never looked back.

    Can this camera do everything that a Nikon D5200 does?

    • @photofonz
      @photofonz  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** While both the Nikon D5200 and Fuji X-M1 are amazing cameras and can deliver sharp and beautiful images, they are 2 different cameras. I like the Fuji X-M1 when I want to travel light. It is a mirrorless camera that does not have a viewfinder but a tilting screen. It is small, light weight and fun to use. I consider it a point & shoot that is capable of producing professional quality images.
      The Nikon D5200 is larger. It is a DSLR, has both a viewfinder and vari-angle screen. This type of camera might be more useful for portrait & wedding photography as well as sports and movie making. The D5200 is also capable of producing professional quality images, especially when using some of Nikon's pro level lenses.
      I currently use the Fuji X-M1 mostly for fun stuff and when I want to travel light. For my professional assignments and projects, I like using the Nikon D7200.

      Thanks for the feedback. What do u think us the cheapest mirrorless that can do what a d5200 does? I feel like mirrorless are still more expensive right now which is why I initially made the choice for the dslr

    • @photofonz
      @photofonz  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Yes, good mirrorless camera systems are not cheap, but they offer some advantages like smaller, lighter, outstanding quality. Their costs while not cheap, are actually less than some of the higher end DSLRS. Some of the mirrorless camera systems I like are the Fuji X-T1, X-E2, Panasonic Lumix Gh3, Gh4, Sony A7 and Samsung NX1.

    It is good now to buy xm1?

    • @photofonz
      @photofonz  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      While I still love using my X-M1 on a regular basis, it is now about 4 1/2 years old. It still gives me great image quality and should be available on the used market for a decent price.
      If money is not a major factor, consider the X-A3 and now the X-A5. It has better features such as, touchscreen, better video resolution, higher ISO, mic port and more.
