    Couple of tips I received when I washed a jacket last week: heat is needed to activate the DWR coating, that's why you need to tumble dry it. Alternatively you can do it with a hairdryer. Also someone said that the Nikwax TX.Direct Spray-On was better than the wash-in (this was for a TAD Gear Raptor Hoodie) so I hand washed the garment and applied the spray while it was still wet, let it dry on the line, then went over it with a hair dryer.

      CAVERN very nice, king. I’ve heard some like the wash in more, while some like the spray. There argument for the wash in was “that it gets in the nooks and crannies more”. I think I may pick up the spray on to do touch ups. I like your idea of a hair dryer!

    • @Qaptaininsano
      @Qaptaininsano 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s good to know that it works because we have a shared laundry room in our complex and I’d prefer to wash by hand and respray it with the DWR then dry with the hair dryer. Do you mind if I ask how you did the hand washing portion? I was thinking of either just submerging it in a combination of water and tech wash or just water but I wasn’t sure about that and what the water temperature should be. Any help is appreciated.

    take it easy, i washed mine shadow projects and herno and acronym with Nikwax a few times and it works well. But I would say the spray on works better than the wash-in DWR. But the spray is harder to use and harder to spray on evenly

  • @aaronmak1208
    @aaronmak1208 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Just a suggestion, proper reapplication of DWR should be sprayed on and not washed in. DWR should only be applied to the outer most layer. Most goretex garments are technical shells that keep moisture out while aiding in pulling sweat away from the body to evaporate. If you wash in the DWR you're going to keep the humidity and sweat underneath your jacket reducing the intended performance.

    Washed my J1A-GTPL using these instructions.
    I was internally screaming during the whole progress but I got it done in the end. The jacket is fully water repellent again which I’m super happy about.
    The only thing I’m sad about is that all lettering on the inside were peeling off after the washing cycle so I took them all off.
    So if you want to wash your jacket before selling it make sure that there is a chance you’ll loose the branding and sizing on the inside of the neck part 🤷‍♂️ BBB

    So.. if the dwr solution is just thrown in the washer with the jacket.. won’t the inside of the jacket also be dwr coated afterwards? That would ruin the jacket’s functionality wouldn’t it? Because it wouldn’t be able to wick moisture from the inside and vent it out. Can you confirm?

  • @ricford39

    I have a new LG Front Loader. I cleaned the soap dispensing tray. Then ran the tub clean cycle. 93 minutes. I hope it was enough. I put the Olympia Motorcycle Jacket in, set for cold, set delicates, added three lids of Nikwax cleaner. The washer ran 41 minutes. Mixed result. A bit cleaner but some of the stains only dimmed out, not washed out. I'll do it again. This time, two cups of Tide HE. OK maybe not. Cool dryer cycle for 10 minutes, hung up to sun dry. The manufacturer recommends Simple Green Degreaser, 10 to 1 mix. Still do this and go from there.

    How problematic would it be to wash your DWR/Gore-Tex clothing in a shared Laundry room? I have some granger's for when I need to wash my coat/pants this F/W season but I live in an apartment with shared facilities. What precautions/alternatives should I opt for? Great vid btw.
    RIP Bob Gore :(

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      no worries, he is being a bit paranoid (relatable tho haha). You don't need to clean the washing machine before really. Actually goretex care page says you don't even have to use special detergent. Although it is reccomended. Its more important that you do a second rinse afterwards.
      And Don't forget to tumble dry after hanging it dry

    Great video. I’m going to try this today. I’ve got a ski trip in a few weeks so I’ll treat my gear before I go. Also I have a 20 year old gore tex raincoat that I’ve never re treated that I wear walking the dog so that’ll be interesting to see how much that’s improved.

      The pre 2013 Gore-Tex jackets that used C8 DWR have much longer longevity in water repellency then today's C6 DWR, just try washing it first making sure to rinse out any traces of laundry soap with at least two to three rinses, air dry and then tumble dry in medium heat in the dryer for 20 mintues and I am sure it will still repel water.

    Do you not have problems with DWR wash in with a 3L Gore Tex Pro as you've used here? I've read you shouldnt use the wash in version as it affects the internal face fabric? Is the spray on better for this application? I need to re-DWR my coat asap.

      Adidas Terrex free hiker or skychaser, they come in many colourways and with or without Gore Tex. Hoka one one tor low although grip isn't great, but look amazing. Arcteryx Aerios FL GTX, amazing grip and minimal styling, the midsole is prone to getting scratched up but if you avoid technical hikes it won't be an issue. There are Hoka hiking sneaker boots that look cool too. Oh and my favourite trail running shoes the Saucony Peregrine 10 could work casually too, again you can get Gore Tex versions.

    One question I have for your comments section is this: Why is it that Gore-Tex needs a DWR coating in the first place? Aren't the laminated textiles themselves supposed to be what does a lot of the work in repelling water while remaining breathable? I would imagine a DWR coating would help, but why is it necessary with Gore-Tex?
