Not a stupid question at all. Apply the DWR once you take the jacket out of the washer and it's still wet. Then put it in the dryer so that the heat can help the DWR set into the fabric.

This membrane is the waterproof aspect of all GORE-TEX fabrics, and it facilitates the breathability of the garment. This membrane, though, is not abrasion resistant and needs a durable face fabric for protection. Without the DWR coating, the face fabric would absorb water, thus limiting breathability. There are. I have an older Mountain Equipment (you know, that weirdly named British company) Gore-Tex jacket which doesn't have a bottom fabric layer leaving the soft rubbery membrane pretty much completely exposed; there's a thin nylon liner on the inside, but it's a large-hole net weave detached from the main fabric, so it's only really there to shield it from some direct contact abrasion and not much else. The membrane eventually gave out on the shoulders around the neck-most likely abraded thanks to the pressure from backpack straps. It can still shield from wind, light drizzle and dry snow but has been rendered useless otherwise. Now if only Arcteryx would distribute its Alpha FL better... Despite being such a critical darling it's surprisingly hard to get a hold of! The current model doesn't seem to exist in Moscow in any colors other than Flare red (and even then not in every size), and I haven't found any stores in Tallinn that would carry the brand at all. There are only a few sellers on Amazon that carry the combination of color black size M, and none seem to ship outside the US. What a goddamn pain.
Careful! The tumble dryer has the potential to ruin a lot of clothing, especially GoreTex jackets. Based on a similar video, I put my $400 GTX snowboard jacket in the tumble dryer on the lowest setting, inside a cotton laundry sack for added protection, and it came out deformed/shrunken. It was Burton, and their customer service was AMAZING enough to give me a full replacement even though the jacket was 2 years old, because their website advised to use the tumble dryer in their care instructions.
Well if you had your jacket for two years, and were tumble drying it with no problem, then something else you did different obviously happened that ruined the jacket.
Thanks for the info! I'd suggest explaining the idea that "washing rarely" was thought to be good, from an assumption of wear and tear happening mostly from washing. Whereas now I think it's assumed the layers get damaged from the dirt itself (and product use with that dirt on it), and removing the dirt is important to keeping those layers from getting damaged.

Good question. You can re-apply DWR on any piece that originally has it. For example, have a look at the "Features" tab of the Atom LT page. We wouldn't recommend applying DWR to a jacket like the Hyllus.
This video says to keep your pocket zippers open, but the video by Gore-Tex says to close them. Which is the right way, or does it even make a big difference?
I always just close all my pockets. With the big ones you don't want your jacket flopping around and potentially catching something or ruining the inside. You could open the small ones if you want to, if you really abuse them and think they may be dirty on the inside. I've left some open in my jackets never had issues. It's more important to make sure you have nothing in them and that the big ones are closed.
Caution with this, particularly with jackets that are a few years old. Be sure to run on a cooler setting for the dryer, running it on normal ruined mine.

Anyway, arc'teryx jackets most common activities require run around the 200-500 euro mark. Let's take a proton LT as example. It costs around 210 euros in stores here during winter sale. It may seem like a lot of money, but considering its characteristics, it's well worth its price compared to cheaper options. The only thing I'm glad of is that they have a competitor, Patagonia, which has controlled the prices somewhat (similar jackets have similar prices between these two, here). Alas, if someone needs something more expensive for extreme activities, those people usually don't complain about prices.

That shouldn't happen Brett. If a piece does tighten slightly straight out of the dryer, it will loosen right back up with a bit of wear. A hot dryer on GORE-TEX fabrics, in fact, will help revive their water resistance.

Read the fine print on Arcterys page. If you just follow these advice as i did you will not have any warranty on you jacket. I used a liquid detergent, and washed it when it was dirty but that was not enough for Arcteryx service rep.

Pretty much yes most jackets with a membrane should be washed in a tech wash. And then spray a dwr on 'em. The drying etc is the only thing that will differ between jackets.
my experience is that you can't wash or dry these jackets. the glue came undone in about 8 months and it was no longer waterproof about 6 months into light casual use.
Welcome to the club, I ruined my jacket in the same way. Lesson learned: never use a dryer. In fact, the official Goretex video on washing garments just tells you "hang it"

The fabric should be wet before you retreat your gore Tex or any other waterproof breathable garment. Applying DWR treatment to a dry fabric will have minimal impact.

I spend a lot of extended periods in the mountains , out in Asia where I do not have access to a washing machine. My last trip was several years long. I’ve purchased Arc’teryx gear since 2001. How would you suggest treating and washing your gore products in such conditions?
I suggest wash by hand, rinse with hose, immerse in clean water, then spend 10 minutes getting all the water out of the pockets; it's no picnic. Hang dry to remove most water & empty the pockets again, then tumble to try reactivating the dwr. If the jacket is wetting out more often, then retreat with a spray or wash-in dwr. Don't expect miracles: the secret to happiness is low expectations.
Can you just hang-dry it? I've had a goretex jacket delaminate and shrink on the lowest setting before. I'd be nervous about putting such an expensive item in there
I was wondering if you could tell me if a hair drier would be ok instead of a tumble drier (as I don't have a tumble drier)? The DWR product I am thinking of using on the Beta AR is Grangers Performance Repel Plus (which is their spray on proofer that mentions its for Gore-Tex). This particular product mentions that it activates with air drying and doesn't require heat to activate. But Grangers do say applying heat after spraying the product on will make the product bond to the fibres in the best possible way and to make the Performance Repel Plus that I had just applied more durable. Leading on from this, would I need to hair dry the jacket until it was dry to the touch. Or would a blast over the jacket for a couple/few minutes be enough heat to have to product bond to the fibres of the jacket? Thanks.
@@rosswalker8177 After the lack of a reply on here. I emailed Arc'teryx and got lots of useful information. Some of which Arc'teryx recommended me to contact Grangers about. I did indeed purchase the Grangers Performance Repel Plus, and it provided excellent results, and definitely better performing than the wash in proofer I used to use on my previous jackets. We don't have a tumble drier in our household, and on recommendation from watching a Grangers video where they say that if you don't have a tumble drier (to make the product bond to the fibres better) a hair drier will do pretty much the same. I applied the Grangers Performance Repel Plus to my jacket after it had stopped dripping on the washing line. I let it completely dry. After that I spent around 10 minutes going over the whole jacket slowly with a hair drier. After doing this, the jacket was beading water like it was brand new. A very impressive product and a really good suggestion about using the hair direr (if you don't have a tumble drier).

Dwr uses peri-flouro carbons. Longer chains are more repellant and last longer but it's a problem for the environment. I think companies like patagonia use smaller chain don't know about arcteryx

Hi John, To remove grease from a GORE-TEX garment, dampen the stain and then rub the stained area with Grangers Performance Wash, Fibertec Pro Wash or ReviveX Synthetic Fabric Cleaner diluted with 3 parts water (dishwashing detergent can also be used with fair results). This stuff has become more of a status symbol than actual quality gear that your company will stand behind. Its super unfortunate that your department wont stand behind practically that exact jacket when it starts to fall apart. Some of your stuff is bombproof, but when it costs $450 you would hope that all of it would be. Go with companies that stand behind their gear and avoid the companies that solely cater to the spoiled ass-hats on the ski hills and national parks. +Brian Healy I wouldn't agree with this at all Arc'teryx have a life time guarantee. I had an issue with one of my garments and they replaced it after I explained the situation. Customer service replied quickly and efficiently (my jacket was replaced within a week). But hey each to their own.

I have found that using a dryer will wear down (melt?) the taped seams and thus significantly reduce the life of your jacket.

I have never washed or treated my gore-tex shells and can still roll around in the muck.
I have 3 layered gore-tex outers and asumme this is why they have held out the weather so well?
I know that you recommend Granger's, I used it on other products and it's good, but would you object to an aerosol based product, like Holmenkol Hightec Proof, being used on your product? I live in Hokkaido, Japan, where nobody has driers, but Holmenkol states that it doesn't need heat to fix its waterproofing, they also say that it's okay for use on Gore-tex, but I'd like your advice, please. Question: I have an Arc'teryx down jacket AND a regular shell jacket that I need to wash/treat. Can I safely use the down formula Grangers solution on the non-down Arc'teryx jacket?
The fabric should be wet before you retreat your gore Tex or any other waterproof breathable garment. Applying DWR treatment to a dry fabric will have minimal impact.
I want to do my insulating atom jacket and beta shell. Do I have to wash and dry them separately or can they be thrown in the washer and dryer together?
I spend a lot of extended periods in the mountains , out in Asia where I do not have access to a washing machine. My last trip was several years long. I’ve purchased Arc’teryx gear since 2001. How would you suggest treating and washing your gore products in such conditions?

The nikwax tech wash has hand wash instructions on the bottle
I suggest wash by hand, rinse with hose, immerse in clean water, then spend 10 minutes getting all the water out of the pockets; it's no picnic. Hang dry to remove most water & empty the pockets again, then tumble to try reactivating the dwr. If the jacket is wetting out more often, then retreat with a spray or wash-in dwr. Don't expect miracles: the secret to happiness is low expectations.
Can you just hang-dry it? I've had a goretex jacket delaminate and shrink on the lowest setting before. I'd be nervous about putting such an expensive item in there
What about food stains, possibly hot sauce? should I pretreat and if so with what?
How does the warm-cold wash program specify the water temperature in degrees?
I was wondering if you could tell me if a hair drier would be ok instead of a tumble drier (as I don't have a tumble drier)?
The DWR product I am thinking of using on the Beta AR is Grangers Performance Repel Plus (which is their spray on proofer that mentions its for Gore-Tex). This particular product mentions that it activates with air drying and doesn't require heat to activate.
But Grangers do say applying heat after spraying the product on will make the product bond to the fibres in the best possible way and to make the Performance Repel Plus that I had just applied more durable. Leading on from this, would I need to hair dry the jacket until it was dry to the touch. Or would a blast over the jacket for a couple/few minutes be enough heat to have to product bond to the fibres of the jacket? Thanks.

@@rosswalker8177 After the lack of a reply on here. I emailed Arc'teryx and got lots of useful information. Some of which Arc'teryx recommended me to contact Grangers about. I did indeed purchase the Grangers Performance Repel Plus, and it provided excellent results, and definitely better performing than the wash in proofer I used to use on my previous jackets. We don't have a tumble drier in our household, and on recommendation from watching a Grangers video where they say that if you don't have a tumble drier (to make the product bond to the fibres better) a hair drier will do pretty much the same. I applied the Grangers Performance Repel Plus to my jacket after it had stopped dripping on the washing line. I let it completely dry. After that I spent around 10 minutes going over the whole jacket slowly with a hair drier. After doing this, the jacket was beading water like it was brand new. A very impressive product and a really good suggestion about using the hair direr (if you don't have a tumble drier).
Why did you not address to not use Liquid detergent I thought you were only supposed to use powder detergent on Gore-Tex

wait...i dunno if this is a stupid question im confused do i dry it first then spray it with the DWR then put it back in the dryer or do i just shake the water off then spray it then put it in the dryer?

The Gore-Tex site says to close all the zippers:
"Before laundering your garment, zip the front closure, pockets and pit zips completely,"
What is DWR composition, wax dissolved in fast evaporating solvent? Maybe that stuff can be homemade.
Dwr uses peri-flouro carbons. Longer chains are more repellant and last longer but it's a problem for the environment. I think companies like patagonia use smaller chain don't know about arcteryx
Does the same go for down pieces as well? I'm thinking specifically the Therme Parka.

Hi John, To remove grease from a GORE-TEX garment, dampen the stain and then rub the stained area with Grangers Performance Wash, Fibertec Pro Wash or ReviveX Synthetic Fabric Cleaner diluted with 3 parts water (dishwashing detergent can also be used with fair results). After this rewash the jacket as per the steps in the video. Please give the experts on our customer service team a call should you have further questions! Cheers.

This stuff has become more of a status symbol than actual quality gear that your company will stand behind. Its super unfortunate that your department wont stand behind practically that exact jacket when it starts to fall apart. Some of your stuff is bombproof, but when it costs $450 you would hope that all of it would be. Go with companies that stand behind their gear and avoid the companies that solely cater to the spoiled ass-hats on the ski hills and national parks. Thanks for the tip on not needing to wash it as much walking around in the city, that was super helpful!!!

I had an issue with one of my garments and they replaced it after I explained the situation. Customer service replied quickly and efficiently (my jacket was replaced within a week).
But hey each to their own.

What is the temperature in Celsius? 40 C? What does normal speed mean? 800 RPM?
Just go according to the settings on your washing machine. Should be universal on almost all machines.
ALexpWTFISTHAT The temperature options in my washing machine are 30 °C, 40 °C, 50 °C, etc. which I consider more universal than COLD, WARM, HOT.
Found the washing instructions from the pocket and it says 40 °C so that's what I'm going to use.

That is because you're not supposed to use Liquid Tide you're only supposed to use powder detergent with the vortex
