Thankfully Laure Shang was a kindred spirit. She saw what he was trying to do. Fortunately it wasn't just this that was his performance, as they may have really resisted, even against Laure. She pushed him, and they saw another performance which made clear mainstream ability as well as his free form singing.
When I found Hua Chenyu on YT and saw some of his performances, I watched this video because I wanted to know how it all started. It is obvious that his performance was strange for the other two judges. Fortunately, Laure Shang and Hua Chenyu were on the same wavelength.
Two of those three judges managed to NOT see the talent and wanted HuaHua gone right now. Thank heaven for Shang Laure, who is considered a bit strange herself. Pieces of this film have been cut, and I'm afraid they're gone forever. Laure said that he was a genius who knew intuitively how to express his emotions through music. The man in the middle said he was more likely a psychopath. There were audition sites set up all over China, and I believe it was 150k men who auditioned. Very few were chosen to move forward. He was the only contestant who was asked to ad lib. Now you know the origin of Mars concerts. His audition was considered weird, and journalists referred to him as "the little brother from Mars." It wasn't meant as a compliment, but the fans he was already accumulating took it on and started calling themselves Martians. Obviously the name stuck, and we still call ourselves Martians. When you see his performances without the piano, his stage presence was entirely bizarre. It didn't alienate fans. On the contrary, everyone was proud that he was not just another run-of-the-mill singer/songwriter. The people who mentored him during the contest, which lasted months, tried to improve his presentation. Paula Abdul sent him messages telling him that he was perfect the way he was, so don't change anything. The MC's, He Jiong and Wang Han, imitated him to tease and make fun of him, though it was clear that they adored him. He good-naturedly persisted in being himself, and you probably know that he went on to win Superboy, despite having barely made it past the first audition. The woman in green who disliked him at first was a judge throughout the competition. She went on to become one of his biggest supporters. They have worked together many times since.
Every Martian is thankful for Laure Shang! We're also thankful to the very first Martians who kept voting for him and supporting him. Without them, I would never have heard of Hua Hua, never gone to China, and never met other Amazing Martians. This is an example of how one person can make some profound changes in the lives of people they'll never meet.
Who would have thought! Enjoyed your understanding reaction. Love that Laure could spot his hidden talent. Since you saw this lyricless song, there is one called cancer. If you are interested watch the one at Mars concert with the red outfit lying down. Not many can watch this, but it's an artistic performance.
Хуа Чэнью никогда не был глупеньким, как может показаться кому то, кто впервые знакомится с ним в начале его музыкальной карьеры, которая началась ровно 10 лет назад. I am so happy you watched this video, the most interesting and heartwarmimg audition I have ever seen.. and he was so shy and lost, but never in his music. The Superboys in the show are still friends, it meant a lot to him, not just that he won. Yeah, thank you Laure for being the same, because a great career started🙏🤩 He has a very interesting background, that is part of what he has been struggling with all his life, but nowadays he has come through most of it, ready to be the super star he is🙏🤩💜 Thank you for understanding his emotional song and what he was expressions so fast, and Yeah, you really got it♥️👍
Have watched this numerous times. Love the bit where the male judge is soooo uncomfortable, so out of his element. 😆 And of course that instant connection with Laure Shang, two planets colliding. But of course, the over-riding joy is realizing all the elements of the Hua Hua we love today were there from the start - the mesmerising boy from Mars with his unique artistry. As you say, weird, eccentric, intriguing, heartwarming. A singular musical genius. Always appreciate your insightful analyses, Fil. Cheers from Australia.
My sweet Hua Hua 💖, so tender, so shy, so talented. Thank you for your analysis. You could react to some of the songs he sang in that show, maybe. Poker face, for example.
Wonderful reaction, Fil. I am so grateful for this show and for Laure Shang, who saw the light within Hua Hua and understood the gifted genius that one day would be revealed to the world. This awkward, shy boy became a gorgeous, powerful swan. Hua Hua never intended to be a superstar (he just loved music); but there was no hiding this gifted genius who could take emotions and express them as music, and have such an impact on the world.💖💖
What a great reaction, thank you! Actually HuaHua was very much sought for at the Wuhan Conservatory of Music by the program but he didn't want to go, the program scouts had to invite him to a dinner with good food and pomise him that there would be even more good food in Changsha where Superboy was held 😂 We're all so thankful for Laure Shang now, I also don"t think HuaHua would have passed with the two other judges, but then they both became very supportive of him with all his performances.
I appreciate that you tell that there was another song.. it is not the complete presentation, its always cut in the video of the Super Boy. Thank you! @@chinchinjung5086
It was lovely to watch this again and hear your reaction. There is a great interview with Hua Hua, in which he speaks of his childhood and the challenges he faced. The love and support he received from the judges and other competitors in SuperBoy helped him a lot th-cam.com/video/wpwo-rOqP-Q/w-d-xo.html At 2 minutes 30 seconds, the video then leads into his performance of Fake Monk at the 2018 Singer show. I realised you have already watched this performance, but the interview leads nicely into the Fake Monk video.
Thank you for another really great reaction.❤❤ This is such an unusual qualifying performance, I love the way that he didn't compromise on his audition piece and that thankfully Laure Shang was one of the judges who saw his potential, however, I'm sure that even had he not succeeded here he would have broken through some other way. In some way it highlights one of the problems with a lot of European/US talent shows, they all seem to be looking for someone to fit in a box, someone that fits their idea of what is popular, rather than someone who has the ability to grow and adapt, that may also be why so few western talent show competitors are still performing in the public eye after a year or 2. 🌺🌺
Fil, I have seen quiet a few singers use this technique. To name one, Peter Gaberial calls his vocalisations, Gaberalise. It's often a warm up technique or when an artist hasn't written any lyrics to a song yet. #QcumberSquad #HuaChenyu - Fil, I'm off back to the study
I rewatch this audition quite regularly, i like his Lyricless song. In his 2014 concert he performs a 12 minute long elaboration of it mixed with Mr So So over a theme from a Laure Shang song called Little Star.. including a great keyboard solo. An all time fabourite.
The Next television show episodes are well worth seeing. Season 1, with 12 episodes, has English subtitles, but unfortunately season 2 does not. The two seasons can be found at: Hua Chenyu The Next s1/s2. Hua Chenyu was a judge and mentor in the first season. The first episode of season 1 shows that Hua still loves his food!
Hi !! I have a suggestion to someone I think you would love. Azahriah, he is a huge twenty one pilots fan too ❤ I absolutely loved his song called comical tragedy.. I’m sure you have a massive list but I think you will love him.
I want to add some things you missed. First of all, before the audition he was lost in his inner world then he missed lots of calls :))). Second, he reaaaaaaally likes to eat… I’ve saw him in many shows and, if it happend to have food, we always can spote him near the table eating someting… Third, despite the fact he comes from a very wealthy family, he was bullied as a child and use to not leave his room for weeks. So, from there to the present moment it was a long and not easy journey…
Smart interviewers learned to offer him food, especially his favorite chicken legs. If he was eating, he would happily answer any question, no matter how dumb or annoying. He did a song in concert called "Song for Feeding Foodies." It's super charming, and it's a perfect match for someone who once had a freezer onstage stocked with popsicles and ice cream. You would enjoy it, especially the interactions with the fans at the end of the song, the final verse of which he improvised on the spot.

China Superboy should be cautious with judges like Cai Guo Qing and the unnamed, less-known senior lady with a rigid mindset. Eliminate those closed-minded judges and retain Laure Shang, who recognizes true talent.
