      Years ago I bought Ford Taurus Station Wagon, top model fully loaded.1st Ford and I had trust issue with quality so I bought 75 K extended warranty. Car was a lemon with multiple Transmission Replacements, Aluminum head block gasket etc always leaked heavily and many more things. Car at dealership for weeks at times. Getting near 75K original miles I wrote personal letter with all documentation to Bill Ford and got an impersonal and arrogant reply that he couldn’t do anything. Drove the car to Honda dealer while A/C failed and Engine overheated with 74,887 miles.
      Never owned anything but Toyotas and Hondas since. No family member or relative have since ever owned a Ford .
      Their EV rollout was a flop because of pricing and stupid lack of willingness to build out CCS Charging network. I now drive a Tesla and will get a second one soon.
      Bill Farley can put lipstick on a pig, and can sound like a regular guy and a dad but he should be fired. Dealerships are full of Mach E’s and Ford F159 Lightnings and prices are just recently dropping like mad. Tesla threw him a lifeline and saved his neck.

      @@Pierceb2 On my 7th F150 and the Lightning is my first EV with ~39,000 miles since 1/2023. Usually put around 200K miles on a truck before trading in. Ford has been super reliable for me, and with Lightning, no more gas. I put about 3000 miles month on it and Duke Energy charges me $19.99/month for home charging. Side note, my mom had a 20 year old corolla she just traded in for a gently used CRV. So experiences vary. Ford and Toyota have been pretty reliable from where I sit.

    As a Tesla fanboy, I really like Jim Farley. A man who is not too proud to do something to give Ford and their customers the best experience and the best product they can. ... Volvo is such a company too. They're one of the first companies to announce gigacasting and structural battery pack giving credit to Tesla. And the first European based company to get a NACS agreement with Tesla. .... I believe this shift to NACS has stuck in the craw of some companies. Jim forced their hand.

      A while ago, I watched an interview with Jim Farley, might have been on Autoline Afterhours, maybe Munro. I've always been a Found On Road Dead believer, but he changed my mind. And we just bought our first new car, a Ford Lightning. So maybe they'll be First On Race Day, after Tesla, that is. The lightning pairs nicely with our Bolt, lol. Just wish that the lightning had a three-seat front row!

      @@evanhil02 Similar story here ... I'm a Tesla investor and fan/owner who was waiting on his Cybertruck, not really considering much else. Then two weeks ago, I watched Tom's video demo of the Tesla-Ford NACS adapter. That video opened my eyes, then I seriously started researching the Lightning. It soon became clear that a Lightning with topper would fit my needs better than the Cybertruck. A couple days later, I noticed a killer-deal on a used 2023 Lariat F150 Lightning with topper, just two miles from my house! Seemed too good to be true, but one test drive was all it took ... bought it on the spot. Only cost me $16K after trading my 2019 Silverado. I was shocked to learn this gem had been on their lot for over a month ... while they kept marking it down. Previous owners had dumped the Lightning after only five months and 10K miles, frustrated by the charging hassles when traveling. This is my first Ford but my fourth truck, and it's the best I've ever owned. I bought an adapter so I can charge it with my Tesla chargers, and I can't wait to get my free Supercharger NACS adapter from Ford ... looking forward to some road trips then. 🙂

    Huge respect to Jim Farley for being so rational, so transparent, and so customer-focused - rather than the typical corporate-speak BS that you get from most OEMs. As tough a road that the legacy auto companies have going forward, Farley's integrity is going to be a HUGE advantage for Ford.

      The mistake that Jim Farley has done is that they aren’t investing enough money into full electric vehicles such as Mustang Mach E and F-150 lighting.

    • @BigTroyT
      @BigTroyT 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@josephdan2850 The problem is that there's still WAY too much legacy tech in these vehicles, and they're manufactured largely the same way they've been making them for decades. Tesla has shown why it's so important to make everything yourself, rather than buying separate modules from dozens of different suppliers - you can't reprogram a bunch of different modules from different suppliers running different software written in different languages, which means you still have manual, bring-it-back-to-the-dealer recalls for things that Tesla (or Rivian) can do with an over-the-air update. You can't compete with Tesla or the Chinese doing things the old way, but the old way of suppliers and unions and dealers means legacy auto is losing tens of thousands of dollars per vehicle and those vehicles will also cost more to support after the sale.
      Farley understands this far better than GM or Stallantis, but that doesn't make it any easier to make changes that everyone will oppose - yet that's what MUST be done to become profitable. Ford, under Farley, has the best chance of success, but that doesn't make it a great chance. There are far too many people standing in the way of what needs to be done, including many politicians who would prefer to see Ford die rather than cut jobs or dealerships or suppliers.

    The quality is really EV industry leading. If you drive a Mach-E back to back with a Tesla Model Y, you'll notice the difference in build quality pretty quick.

      The best comparison to the Mach-e with it's somewhat compact cabin space and not huge luggage capacity is the new Model 3. It's a lot smaller than a Model Y, closer to a Model 3. And if you compare those two, for things like ride quality, interior sound levels, handling, safety, durability, range, etc., well, the Mach-e just feels like a poor man's Model 3. But the Model 3 costs far less.

    • @klossfam

      I'd say that's flawed argument as the Mach-E is almost exactly the same size and close in weight to a Y. I have access to a 3 (my sons), we own an Ioniq 5 and I've driven a Mach-E and Y several times.
      The Mach-E is probably closest to an Ioniq 5 in feel (although the Mach-E can be a little bouncy vs the very controlled ride of the I5).

    As a Ford Lightning owner, this move and interview definitely sits well with me and would help Increase the odds of me buying Ford again in the future, if only we could restructure the dealership model to be more like tesla as well.

    • @ZipZoomZip
      @ZipZoomZip 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      True, but I'm not sure how you could accomplish making the dealership model more like Tesla. I mean, dealers are naturally greedy (for the most part) while my experience at Tesla service centers has been they don't try to extract money from your wallet unless your car really needs to be worked on. And then the charges are very reasonable and not inflated. I don't know how you get an independent, for-profit, private dealership to behave that way.

    Tom, you are on a roll. You're nailing it. BTW, I saw your comment on BI that your charger reviews take a lot of work and receive relatively few views, and it got me thinking. First, your charger reviews are invaluable to all of us looking to put in a level 2 charger. That's a big deal as, as you point out, there are some less than trustworthy vendors in this space and these things carry a lot of juice. But 2nd, you're in a bit of a Catch 22. Once we, based on your advice, choose and install a charger, well, interest wanes. No one who has installed one ever thinks "gee, I wonder if Chargepoint has updated their cable recently?" So don't stop. Like I said, your reviews at invaluable(you're the only person, literally, doing what you do.) Keep on keeping on. And, oh yeah, next time burn off the crud from your last pizza before you make the next one in your Lighting. Be well.

    What a fantastic interview. My hat's off to Mr Farley and Mr Musk for opening up charging and ensuring we have the best charging standard port in North America. We are so lucky they are both visionaries that care about their customers. I am a Tesla customer and quite frankly concerned about non-Tesla vehicles charging at SuperChargers, especially vehicles like Fords that currently consume TWO charging spots due to the location of the charging port. Even so, I welcome opening the SuperCharger network because my main motivation is to get us off fossil fuels as quickly as possible. Thank you again for posting this super interesting interview.

    • @Vxvx22
      @Vxvx22 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Once the Tesla supercharger get congested with non-Tesla EV, Tesla will notice it and just build even more supercharger everywhere in more location. It will become a win-win situation for everyone. Tesla driver won't lose anything at the end.

    Great interview Tom, thanks for the information wish Jim would have slipped and told you Fords first NACS vehicle. Im a General Contractor and my ER Lightning works great, saves me so much time always having a full tank every morning and not having to stop at gas stations not to mention the frunk/tool box just so much utility. So much misinformation has hurt Fords sales of the Lightning because of the short range with towing but for my business the longest tow I do is 50 miles with my 6x10 dump trailer so its a non issue, it truly is a great vehicle.

    • @ZipZoomZip
      @ZipZoomZip 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, most people who tow work trailers don't tow long distances. It's mainly the RV crowd that tows hundreds or thousands of miles. This whole "towing range of EVs sucks" is amplified to slow down the transition. Most people who buy trucks don't tow long distances. The data is clear. Sure, if you are an RV'er who tows through multiple states on a regular basis, buy a heavy-duty gas or diesel truck. Most truck owners don't need that capability and are more interested in eliminating their weekly gas bill.

    Thank you for doing this interview Tom! I believe your channel will be growing exponentially this year. Please keep up this other content that's different from your usual charging station reviews. I especially like all the interviews you do and also I really loved that EV road trip race with Kyle Connor in the F-150 Lightning ⚡️⚡️⚡️
    Like you said, Jim single-handedly changed history and helped EV adoption in all of North America by switching to J3400/NACS. It was never good to have charging networks siloed by either Tesla or non-Tesla. Having everyone move over to one plug standard and having the Tesla Supercharger network open to all is a real game-changer in terms of EV adoption. Gas pumps don't have multiple nozzle sizes and shapes by brand, so why should electric vehicles be any different in terms of electrical plugs. Overall, it's short-term pain transitioning plug standards for long-term gain.

    I agree with Farley it was “imperative” they offer the adapters for free. It’s important to keep in mind that early Ford EV customers put a huge leap of faith into a brand new product. Being loyal to these, more than likely long term, customers during R&D and development stages means a lot. Ford is carrying them in this trip until standardization fully sets in. This will keep Ford customers thankful and loyal.

    As a Tesla owner for over 5 years I applause Jim's decision to join the Supercharger network it will go a long way to accelerate the adoption of EV cars. When I purchased my first Tesla 5 years ago, there were only two Superchargers in the Twin Cities area, today there are over a dozen in the Twin Cities area and over twenty in MInnesota as a whole. Five years ago, I could go days without seeing another Tesla, Now a days, I can't go 10 miles without seeing at least one Tesla. I took a road trip from Minnesota to Texas and it was as easy as speaking to the car "Navigate to Texas" and the car plotted the trip to include which Superchargers I needed to stop at and for how long at each station. Although I am certain they exist from time to time, personally I have never ran into a broken Supercharger.
    I welcome all the other manufactures that will be joining us Tesla owners on the Supercharger Network. You will soon be traveling as easily and carefree as us Tesla owners do. Thanks Jim and Welcome Ford Owners!

    Thanx for sharing. In my opinion the adoption of NACS by Ford is not eating humble pie but a straight forward strategic move. Give customers a wider option even if they do not want to use it for whatever reason. Tesla themselves saw that if they wanted to sell EVs they must provide a dependable charging infrastructure and so should all the OEMs out there. Thank you again for this informative video.

If these NACS ports start popping up, I might replace the port in my 2018 Model 3 so I can use them. Mine does not support CCS communcations. Also, if all goes to plan, Ford's next gen EVs should be more compelling than their first gen, so getting the charging right before they ramp even higher is better for everybody.
