Crimping Stiff Spectra

  • This is a system I developed to crimp stiff spectra. Two types ... one is a simple and quick loop crimp and the other is the same but with a stopper to prevent loop from closing under severe stress. I personally prefer the simple loop as it is very streamlined and even if the loop closes the fish won't come off.

Very nice video again. Thanks for sharing. Some guys also splice hollow Dyneema (or Specra) and use a Brummel lock to attach the shooting line to the shaft. See Chris Coates. Keep it going brother! :)

Hi! Thanks for the video. I have a question: what kind of knot are you using? It looks so big!I use a bowline knot to connect the spectra to the shaft and never had problems. Also the profile is quite nice. Why aren't you trying it?

I just used a simple overhand knot. The stiff spectra bulks up quite a bit with knots! Also with spectra, the testing I have seen seems to indicate that spectra loses up to 50% of its strength with knots , so proper crimps might be better.

do you also make a loop when crimping mono?

No, mono is different and it won't slip as easily. With mono just crimp normally and keep the sides flared to avoid line from cutting on the edge. Also make sure you burn a good bulb with mono as that helps a lot. I actually once forgot to crimp my mono, but had a good bulb ... I spent a full day of spearfishing and caught quite a few good fish and the line held. I only realized I had not crimped the crimp when I got back home later that day!

What was the diameter of the spectra used and what size crimps?
