No more lost fish! Finally a flopper tuning tool!

  • I would like to share a tool I have been using for several years that tunes your flopper and gives you flexibility of how you want your flopper to be tuned. Today it is possible to 3D Print it in metal at a very reasonable price (around $40). I think it will probably also work well if 3D printed in plastic with fiber reinforcement for about 1/4 of the cost of metal ... but I haven't tried that so I don't know if it works as well.
    Nobody likes injuring fish and letting them go off to die. This dramatically reduces the number of fish you lose to fish slip outs and I highly recommend it! Every spearo should have this in their toolbox!

    Nice tool, nice video too!!!
    For over 30 years I use a small vice just to tight the floppers end closer to the shaft near the pin that keeps the flopper to the shaft.
    If it gets too tight, I use a screwdriver (or whatever cylindrical shaft I have that is slightly wider than the spearshaft) on the back side of the flopper and I open the too closed ends of the flopper by using the small vice.
    In that way, big forces can be applied accurately and also adjustments can be easy done.
    By hammering we can easily achieve 10x the weight we punch so just making a portable tool like yours but metallic with threads and a screw applying the required force in order to deform the flopper would be ideal to have with us any time!!!
    Love, respect and safe diving!!! :-)

      NIce idea! I did make a few different proto types but things can get really complicated really quickly. I felt this was best as it is extremely simple and needs very simple tools that anyone on a spearfishing boat can use. I usually end up tuning everyone's flopper on the boat before we start spearfishing and it takes me less than a minute to do 4 floppers.

      @@majdq8 the simplest idea is always the best!!!
      Very very long time ago I used just a pair of pliers but afterwards since I was also reshaping the tip of the spearshaft, the vice was on the bench and it was more accurate and faster.
      No matter what way anyone use, it is very important the flop to lock into position after penetrating the fish.
      30+ years ago when I was 15 I had lost a couple big ones since the vibrations on the shaft sometimes made the loose flopper close even if the line was under tension.
      It was then that I decided to have the flopper under the shaft and keep it closed with a piece of rolled tape around it. After the shot the rolled tape was on the line and the gravity was opening the flopper and that was it, no more excuses blaming the flopper!!! LoL

    This video helped a lot, an interesting future test video that would be interesting to know is if “booster bands” are the way to increase inverted roller gun performance or is simply adding other another band to the bottom band battery the way to get a higher shaft velocity

    I like rob Allen flopper. They have specially big locking ears. Thanks for sharing very needed tool. I knock a little with hammer and try, if it is not enough then repeat. ) If locked too much put inside flopper flat screw close a little and etc.

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With a hammer it is very easy to make a wrong hit and lock your flopper without having the initial part loose ... and sometimes you can even damage the flopper pin and bend it. This causes the shaft to vector off line with poor accuracy and sometimes if it locks the flopper too closed, fish will easily escape. I find this tool helps to get a precise hammer blow and thus give much higher margin or error and much more flexibility to tune your flopper exactly as you want and be able to repeat it over and over again consistently.

    Please do a video on a 120 rob allen carbon roller, there seems to be a lack of information online on them but there is coatsman unrolling the roller video that explains setup. I feel you could find a way to avoid heavy muzzle without losing accuracy. I have one myself and it is super crazy accurate but the muzzle is so heavy with a 7.5m shaft that hunting is sometimes hindered. I took the weight out of the muzzle but it loses accuracy. I think you do an amazing job on your videos and i feel you could workout the quirks of that roller gun.

Have you had any experience with the performance of this shaft? I've read some people comment that the shoulder of the flopper is a bit large so I've bought a penetration cone to hopefully counteract that. Cheers

    Hi Majdq8, hopefully this reaches you soon. I am unable to post on Spearboard as a new user and I dont know who who else to ask besides mario himself thru instagram. But, I am currently working on a personal upgrade/build. Starting off with the Ermes Avatar handle, the "male insertion" piece is about 4mm too long for my barrel+plug. I am unsure of how to trim the plug itself within the barrel because it looks a little different (space for possible ballasting?). I could cut/file down the insert to my desired length but I would most likely compromise the first o-ring slot. As you would know, there are 2 o-ring slots and I only need the 2nd one since it is for a 26mm id barrel. I would just be sacrificing future builds if I were to buy a different barrel and choose to use the same handle for whatever reason. Would this have any effect on the structure of the handle in any way under pressure of band load of a conventional 120 gun? Thanks in advance

    Hey majdq8. Thank you so much for all the good content. Now that you have had some time with your 95 Salvimar Hero, do you wish you had gone with the 85 over the 95? • @majdq8
      @majdq8  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is a tough call ... the 95 definetly gives you more range when setup with the good setup I used in the video I even used it in the oil rigs to shoot fish I usually use a 120 or 130 gun for ... successfully! So a well setup 85 would be the equivalent in performance to a default Riffe 120 and a well setup 95 would be the performance of a Riffe 130. Personally for hunting in poor visibility I would just go for a 85 or even a 75. But again you need to fix the setup to get that performance gain.

    Hey buddy are you ok? You still weren’t here…What dou think about the 2x16mm small ıd rubber and 8mm 150cm shaft? Maybe rubbers has less power than 3x14,14,5 but is it enough for the penetration to long range.See you again buddy

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think best is not to go over 15mm small ID bands as the contraction of the bands of the thicker material is slow. I use 8mm @ 150cm a lot with 2 x 14.5mm bands. The 3rd band doesn't add much power and better is just to improve your loading technique and go for higher band stretch on 2 x 14.5mm or 2 x 15mm bands. I use this setup for large dogtooth and large YFT with great success. Also remember that a 7.5mm shaft is an excellent option as well. In some cases a 7.5mm shaft will perform better than an 8mm shaft if using 2 bands.

      I think there are only a few manufacturers of rubber bands in the world and most of the EU bands are done by the same rubber manufacturers to their specifications. The EU gun makers are a little behind the curve when it comes to providing the correct specs of bands, but they are catching on. Basically you want to match your bands to the shaft you are using. The latest Sigalsub and C4 bands and Cressi bands seem very good ... but nothing beats a new fresh batch of Primeline bands!

      I don't understand "pathos ss trigger". Maybe you mean wishbone? If wishbone, best is pastidip ... if you can't find plastidip try just normal aquarium silicone (to glue glass together) and insert it before it dries. The main idea is to prevent water migration inside band cavity. As you dive the different pressures like a pump and can siphon water inside band cavity.

      @@AVIRA972 Ah ... sorry I think you must have misunderstood something there. You cannot use epoxy or plasti dip for the SS trigger unfortunately. SS trigger will always scratch or gall as that is a phenomenon with all SS under stress. The two metals will "cold weld" with enough friction. Best is to have the trigger sear made of plastic (has its own problems) or use a roller.

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AVIRA972 Ok, now I see it. Yes that was during the period I thought that main scratching was from the shaft sear striking the trigger sear during recoil and thus causing scratching. This helped a little but the real reason for scratching was the actual friction between the two sears on top. This is why I went on a crusade to try and find a solution to this accuracy robbing problem ... and this ended up as the main driver to develop the Ermessub double roller trigger.
