  • This is Part 3 of 3 of my Handle Mod. This shows testing in the pool for accuracy and penetration after Handle Mod ... I also included some actual spearfishing clips of live testing in the sea. All the sea footage was done on a recent trip in one and a half days. Unfortunately I lost a lot of good footage due to my GoPro flooding. But there is enough clips to give you an idea of what a Game Changer modding the handle is.

    This is revolutionary. It will change spearfishing forever. Market prices will change now (: as a custom handle can make a lot of difference in performance.

    Fantastic video and excellent detail to the technicalities! Can you explain what to look for when choosing shafts (density, springiness, tricut/pencil) and bands (natural, synthetic, ID, stretch factor etc) and even mention good manufacturers? Thanks again, you took spearfishing on a different level, very inspiring!

    Thanks for your reply. Also really interested in reducing leverage effect by raising handle as high as possible in the stock, like in Sea Sniper design which is then braced with structural tubes either side...Would love to see some pool tests with that gun.

      I have a few friends that have the big Sea Sniper gun and might put it in the pool to test.

    Your videos are priceless for showing how guns and rigging work. I've been following the spear board thread on shooting lines and notice that you are promising to do a test comparing various lines. I'm banned there and can't post, so I'm taking this opportunity to urge you to hurry up.:) I'm looking forward to learning how 300 pound mono compares to my usual 400 pound mono, and in particular to the 1.7mm stiff Spectra.

      @majdq8  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bill ... yes plan to do that as I am curious as well. With regards to Mono ... going from 300lb to 400lb does not make much difference unless the shaft is light (like 7mm). But going to spectra there is a big difference with the 1.9mm, however I think that was due to the huge knot involved. I managed to crimp the stiff spectra and seemed to be much better in a quick test in the pool and the 1.9mm is not necessary and probably 1.4 or 1.7 is better choice. Also the 1.2mm vinyl coated SS cable seems very interesting. My plan is to dry test the lines to breaking point first ... and then do a penetration and accuracy testing with different knots and trying different crimps and crimping techniques.

      My Denton 110 has an 8mm shaft and my Albacore 130 uses 8.5, so maybe I'll stick with the 400. I do like the way the fluorescent green Momoi 400 shows up down in the murk and kelp. I just bought some SoftSteel Ultra 300, but its clear. Many years ago when I tried it I got tangled up in it on the bottom and scared the hell out of myself, so now I've got some dye on order and will make sure its visible before I try it again. I saw your post about crimping the Benthic Spectra. I would not have thought that to be possible. I'm thinking about ordering some 1.7 but I thought I might as well wait for your test results. I have plenty of time, since our white sea bass season here in Southern California probably won't start until late February or early March. The 1.4 would be plenty strong at 330 pounds, but I'm just afraid it would be too thin to grab with a hot fish on the other end. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to seeing the results of your tests.

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the Denton 110 I prefer shooting a 7.5mm shaft as it has only 122cm of band stretch and I feel the 7.5mm is a better fit ... but of course 8mm will work well if you put 2 x 14.5mm bands. Haven't tried the Momo 400 but with 8mm shaft and higher you won't see much difference. The Albacore 130 is really only for tough hard fleshed pelagics at long ranges ... I am doing testing on it now and it is the only gun I have tried that can shoot flat all the way to 8 meters from tip of shaft. If there are no sharp structures mono works really well ... I would only use spectra if chances of line cutting on reefs or coral is high.

    • @billmac22
      @billmac22 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do have two 14.5mm small ID bands on the Denton. In Southern California we have almost no chance of cutting line on reefs. In 20 years I think I've seen one case of mono looking shredded by a white sea bass pulling it over rocks, and even then it didn't break. We had an unprecedented run of big bluefin tuna last summer, although it was over before I managed to get the Albacore 130. But even if they never return, I think the gun will be useful for big yellowtail. The smaller school fish come close, but the large ones, particularly singles, say a lot farther away. Of course no matter what the range of a gun, there will always be fish just beyond that range, but its nice to have a couple more feet of range. Based on what you have said, it sounds like I should just stick to my 400 pound mono. But since I bought this low memory 300 pound, I might as well give it a try and see if I can tell any difference. Thank you so much for all the work you put into testing and for taking the time to answer questions.

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      For WSB I don't think you need too much to go through a fish as they are quite soft fleshed. With the Albacore 130 ... once properly setup ... shaft drop @ 8 meters from tip of shaft to target is less than 3 inches in the pool ... that would translate to about 1 inch shaft drop in hunting conditions in the sea!!! Those big Yellowtails will have a nasty surprise next time you give them a visit ;). I will try to put up the results of my Albacore 130 testing soon.

    Awesome video and analysis as always majdq8!!!
    Quick question. I don't think I can go through the process of carbon wrapping the handle, and am leaning on forming a grip with the polymorph since it probably will have a cleaner look. But which do you think will be more durable...a grip with polymorph or a grip with epoxy putty only? Also would like to get your 2 cents on which you would prefer and why. TIA!

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer epoxy putty to polymorph as you can create a better friction layer. You don't need Carbon Fiber wrap and I have done many very good handle mods with just good marine epoxy putty and then put a friction layer.

    • @guamanfish
      @guamanfish 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool, thanks for the reply! Do you think a rubber palm glove will have a good grip on a smooth surface polymorph handle? Also you mentioned a benefit that by modding the handle and making the shot more stable, you are less prone to shaft whip. Why do you think that is?

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The smooth Polymorph will not have good friction. You can emboss the surface by using a heavily embossed glove and heating the Polymorph and squeezing it and putting the pattern on the Polymorph. Another idea is to put large salt crystals and then melt them leaving a potted "grippy" surface ... but it will never get close to good epoxy with sand layer. Shaft whip is less after modding the handle because the shaft leaves the track with no "push" caused by recoil as it exits the track.

    • @guamanfish
      @guamanfish 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gotcha. I like your observation regarding shaft whip as well...that's the answer I wanted to hear to eliminate other possibilities ^ ^

    How does the handle mod effect roller guns? like when you over powered the 85 roller in one of your earlier videos with too much pre- strech? Excellent video series, thanks so much for making them :)

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rollers generally have a different recoil profile ... but already have a few of the guys email me that they have done a handle mod on their rollers with fantastic results. It certainly cannot hurt and with Aim Memory Lock ... it will allow you to shoot much quicker with much higher accuracy.

  • @scottseale
    @scottseale 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for your thorough testing videos. Have you tested the handle mod on mid handle guns e.g like a Riffe Island or similar? I can imagine a benefit for these also, but you may have some specific insights from direct testing.

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think a handle mod would help with such a gun, but it will not work well. The handle is just way too low and thus this large distance will allow recoil a lot of leverage to twist the gun vertical and cause muzzle lift. This will push the tail of the shaft on exist and cause an unstable shaft flight.

    Majdq8, what are your thoughts on doing this mod on a riffe euro 90?

    • @majdq8

      You could change the Riffe Euro to perform like a 110 or 120 euro.

      majdq8 better than ermessub trigger for pathos?

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There were several beta triggers made by Ermessub for the Pathos D'Angelo II handle. This one had line release outside the box. The final version that Pathos is using has line release inside the box ... which is probably much better as the line release is not exposed ... but needs a very slight modification in the handle to allow the line release to move properly.

    hello nice videos, I have a Cressi Geronimo Elite 95 and I found it 's more accurate with 14 mm bands and its original shaft 6,50 mm
    Can you make a video testing this gun with different bands and shafts?

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a few Cressi guns ... they used to be my favorites when I was a kid. Actually brand name is not important ... more important is design fundamentals. I will see if I will have time to do some testing with the Cressi gun.

    • @MarineCy
      @MarineCy 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      majdq8 Hi the geronimo elite is a very accurate speargun just below the new Cressi Cherokee open speargun which it has a magnetic muzzle and doesn 't need a line over the shaft to hold it on place, it would be great if you can make a video with these speargun testing shafts and bands on it...
      What country are you from? am from Cyprus near Greece

    hello, great video. I have a laser carbon 110 with a pathos 1.40x 6,75mm saft and two 17,5mm band. it's fine but not very accurate at 4+meters. could you tell me a better set up?

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Try going with the same shaft, but using 2 x 14mm small ID bands @ 350% to 360% . It really dramatically improves performance and accuracy ... and has less recoil.

    At 11:15min. What line release is that. it does not look like the standard pathos line release.
    Pathos standard line release is horrible with 5-7mm gloves. :(

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good observation ;). Yes that is a custom trigger made for me with side line release. I also have problems when rigging with breakaway with the default pin line release of the Pathos trigger.

    Will it be better to have an enclosed track on a wooden roller 130?

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, and ET will have friction which will slow down the shaft velocity.

    • @jumainismail5403
      @jumainismail5403 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      majdq8 but won't it increase accuracy

    • @majdq8
      @majdq8  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No not at all. Accuracy has more to do with proper speargun design and proper setup ... it has nothing to do with ET and to prove that you can see my many video tests where I use open track spearguns. I doubt you will find any ET gun that can get the same accuracy or the same performance. An ET might help if the gun design is terrible, but that is like cutting your head off every time you have a headache.
