I remember asking my parents to get me this game for Christmas the year it came out because the commercials insinuated that they were going to depict the battle of Iwo Jima, which I hadn’t seen done before at the time. I remember playing the game and trying my best to like it so I wouldn’t hurt my parents feelings but god damn it was so awful.

Luckily I only rented it (on PS2). I remember being so pumped for the Iwo Jima mission, only to be really disappointed to find out that it was yet another mission where you're running around alone. And then as a slap in the face they show a single squad with a flag run onto the beach at the end. Wahoo.

There's a few other things that I think are worth highlighting to show how awful this game is.
In the first mission you are tasked with using an AA gun to shoot down some Zeros. Both my friend and I tried and tried to complete this on every difficulty and could not shoot down a single Zero.
I looked up a guide and the guide stated that it was almost impossible but if you wait long enough the game just automatically completes the objective for you anyway.
Also, on the 2 missions that begin in landing crafts you can clearly see that the craft is already on the beach rather than approaching it. On the 2nd landing craft level you can clearly see a mountain on the island and it's not getting any closer.

This game is bad the guns don't work WAW is better becuase it has a better pacific campaign based on the island hopping campaign from making to pelelu to Okinowa to Shuri castle like one good thing very realistic and has a gritty atmosphere to it like in the later japanese missions the banzai charges get more frequent.

Would you rather play this or World at War's campaign?
    Also some things to clarify:
-The friendly NPC models are ripped from Call of Duty 3, they still have 29th Infantry badges (those blue and white yin yang things), which is a division that did not fight in the Pacific.
-Multiplayer only works with LAN (as seen in Oboe's video). It's because the servers were shut down when Cauldron were bought by Bohemia (ARMA devs).
And you just need Secret Service and the Civil War games to complete the Cauldron saga.

    • @pixelpowder8371

I'd say anyone and their grandma would rather play WAW than this game. But if you want, ask someone this. Would you rather play Vanguard or this game? Though I'd only stick to Vanguard just for shooting bad guys. There are Cod games with better stories, Infinite Warfare for example.

The first one was frustrating due to the enemies hit scanning/sniping you constantly, but the sequel was thankfully a better game. They're not the best games, but the Civil War setting and the guns you get to use(like the musket)makes them rather unique.

Hey Jarek, thank you for doing this game review regarding battle for the pacific. Here are a few things I got to say about it: 1) this game came out a year before call of duty: world at war in 2008 and if you compare and contrast between them, WaW is better than BftP. 2) there are 10 levels spread out the whole game regarding the pacific (basically WWII in the Pacific): 1. Battle Wake Island - dec. 8-23, 1941, 2) battle of Bataan (Bataan is a region in the Philippines) - Jan. 7 - April 9, 1942, 3 and 4) battle of Guadalcanal- aug. 7, 1942 - feb. 9, 1943, 5 and 6) battle of Leyte (region in the Philippines) - oct. 17 - dec. 26, 1944, 7) battle of Luzon (region in the Philippines) - Jan. 9 - aug. 15, 1945. And 8-10) battle of Iwo Jima - feb. 19 - march 26, 1945. Now you check these battles out in Wikipedia, if you want more explanation about them, I’ll highly recommend you’ll check out kings and generals’ the pacific war 1941-1945 which they’ll give you week-by-week timeline regarding battles in the pacific which are informative and have interesting map animations to look at. Also, kings and generals’ Russo-Japanese war, sihang warehouse 1937, khalkhin gol 1939, battle of Taronto 1940 (Taronto is in Italy, not Toronto in Canada, lol), and battle of Hong Kong 1941. Again, i highly recommend you’ll check these videos out if you want context and explanation about them, which is better than this game. And 3) say what you will regarding this game, which I won’t disagree with you about them. This game might not come out as being the best game ever, but at least it’s passable and not frustrating to play (except distance where if you don’t follow them, you’ll fail instantly) by one difference: there are no bullet sponged bosses to fight against and no bugged out sections which you can’t progressed. Yeah, compare that to soldier of fortune: payback, BftP is the preferable option. If you want to have true wwii pacific experience, play call of duty: world at war instead. And thus, that’s all have to say about it. Thanks for reading and and again, thank you for covering this game.

Infinity-Ward would have been a better choice for a WW2 themed shooter for the History Channel, but instead they partnered with the Military Channel for CoD 2. Which in the long run wasn't a bad thing, because if they did do a WW2 themed shooter for the History Channel, it would be conflicting with CoD, which doesn't matter the slightest because these games were already conflicting with CoD enough.

I actually remember this game, I remember it very very well, it is in fact one of those WW2 shooters that I remember from my childhood... I won't say fondly but definitely with that rosy red childhood filter. And I remember it that way for one single reason: my PC version of the game had a very unique graphical glitch. The entire game was white. The models were still there, just every texture in the game was white, so it was like playing SuperHot but if the enemies were white and no slow motion.
I remember it as my first experience with an utter shit game that I still played anyways because I didn't know any better.

This game absolutely sucked. The worst thing about it was that you were forced to stay right next to your squad leader at all times, otherwise you would automatically fail the mission. If you want a good WW2 Pacific Theater game, just play Call Of Duty World At War or Medal Of Honor Rising Sun.

This really is a prime example of a game that is... a game. Like, a technically functional game that ticks off the boxes on whichever bog-standard design template it's using. But a game which then fails to actually be FUN or give anyone a reason to WANT to play it. If your game doesn't have SOMETHING that sets it apart (especially if it's such a generic game, like WWII shooters were around this time period), whether that's a clever new mechanic, a unique or underused setting, even just an interesting art style, nobody's going to care.
