The Final Boss Actually, I'm off the same mind as you are, my friend. I'll admit it, I'm not MoS's biggest fans but the movie showed a lot of potential, so I can watch it if there's nothing else on and I was hoping BvS would be better. Unfortunately it was a major let down.

I agree completely! I've always loved Jonathan Kent's impact on the Superman story. Like the biblical story of Joseph, Jonathan Kent has the monumental task of raising the powerful man on Earth and yet takes the job in his stride; by raising Clark like his own son and teaching the boy to have values such as decency, virtue, compassion and kindness. Clark's "divine" abilities and his mission on earth come from his biological father, but it's because of Jonathan Kent's guidance that Clark is able to go from being Kal-El "The son of God" to "The Superman".
Yeah, Superman the movie truly was the first modern Superhero film. It took it's source material seriously and gave it weight and emotion that no other comic book adaptation before it achieved, showing superhero stories could be more that just campy children's stuff. Thank you Richard Donner, Superhero movies wouldn't be what they are without your accomplishment!

Notice when Clark asks the question "Who am I?" then Jor-El eyes look upwards away from the camera to 'process' that question as a simulation AI, much like asking Alexa or Siri. Did you know that the idea behind that line came from the Bible. When Mario Puzo was doing research to write the screenplay he noticed a lot of similarities between Superman and Jesus. For the fact that they were foreigners brought unto a world to rescue mankind. Both sent by their fathers.
For me it was Lara's subdued motherly objections to sending him, "They're primitives", "He won't be one of them", "He'll be odd. Different", "Isolated and alone". I found that a very human counterweight to the religious overtones demonstrated by Jor-El. He was simply another being from elsewhere with a mother who loved him too.
Could be possible with voice synthesis tech down the line. Now imagine Brando reciting Rumi's poetry or reading Carl Sagan's Cosmos. That'd be out of this world!
the mix of brando's voice, John Williams score and that wonderful macro photography to represent the unexplained space anomalies is achingly beautiful, one of best scenes in the movie and sadly lacking in the new man of steel reboot, it may be a cliché but they just don't make them like this anymore.

This scene is what really took this film on another level for me, so poetic and esoteric in a way you just don't see in most modern Superhero films. Marlon Brando was truly an actor. And his portrayal of Jor-El is vastly superior to Russell Crowe's. Not that Russell Crowe's portrayal was bad, far from it, but Brando just gave the character a certain dignity and warmth that Crowe could not match.
And the best thing? If the stories from the set were true, Brando wasn't even trying to act and was some way past his prime. Yet here he is, one of his best loved performances.
Richard Donner is a far superior director, his Superman film embraces the comical, absurd, nature of Superman, California being nuked for beachfront property, yet a very human sincerity.

Then as he takes Kal-El on a journey through time and space to his home planet, so God takes us, on a journey beginning in Genesis, showing us our beginnings and our home as it was before we became estranged. I would agree with that, except for the one part of the dialogue between the two numbers near the beginning: "...You will have reached your eighteenth year, as it is measured here.", followed by "... I will have been dead for many thousands of 'your' years." What is the next time frame he says? "...Twelve of 'your' years will have passed." So in terms of how old he is, I have reason to believe that when asked about it by Lois, he tells the truth when he says "Over twenty one" as that's closer to the actual age of his.
Whenever I'm lost or scared. I'd watch this video just to listen to Marlon Brando's brilliant delivery and John William's beautiful score. Listening to them both calms my nerves.

“The various concepts of immortality…and their basis in actual fact…” I always got a little sad because I got the impression from that that Jor-El knew that with Kal’s powers he would also out-live anyone on earth he’d ever know or love, and that more than his powers would make him one of the loneliest beings to ever live no matter how noble or wonderful he otherwise became. And we see it in the comics; Superman lives on into even a million years later, alone.

I don't know why they left parts of his speeh from the original. The part he said, "You're 18 now but I've been dead for thousands of years now." When I first heard that, I was like, 'Wow!' That shit is deep! It would've been so powerful if they left that part in the original.

This would and should be how the tutorial goes for a new Superman game. Jor-El talks you through the basics and such and gives these same inspirational quotes before you're set free into the open world with the words "My only son" and the theme builds. Game of the year right there haha
I grew up with this movie so I am partial to it but Marlin Brando's speeches have stuck with me all these years. The love of a parent and knowledge that Kal El is something special and really comes through in this movie.
I loved this scene as a child and still do now. Such emotion and wisdom power-packed, and power performed. Marlon Brando *was* Jor-El, an insightful and wise father. Wow. This was unmatched by anything in the new version, reasonably good movie that it was.
Always makes me tear up; this is the essence of Superman and is something we should all strive for in our own lives. Be the light that shines for others.
JAY OH Brando is KING. But Russel Crowe was chosen because of his voice. I suggested it during discussion with Ridley Scott in San Antonio, Tx. Ridley and I were watching "A Good Year" I suggested Russell portray Jor El and Ridley looked at me strangely and it was suggested and it happened.

This is one of my favorite scenes in the movie. The music and visuals add to the surreal atmosphere in this sequence. I was too young to have seen then when it first came out in 1978, or at least, my parents thought so as I was barely three years old. No worries, in November of 2018, I'm getting to see it for the first time on the big screen. Can't wait!
Despite his mispronounciation of Krypton, I cannot think of any one better to play as the father to a God on Earth than the original Godfather himself.

Saw Superman I as a young lad in the cinema. The scene where Superman's earthly father suffers a heart attack almost made burst into tears.

Marlon Brando was truly an actor. And his portrayal of Jor-El is vastly superior to Russell Crowe's. Not that Russell Crowe's portrayal was bad, far from it, but Brando just gave the character a certain dignity and warmth that Crowe could not match.
And the best thing? If the stories from the set were true, Brando wasn't even trying to act and was some way past his prime. Yet here he is, one of his best loved performances.
Yes, Brando as Jor-El was captivating and soothing...Never can be beat...
Richard Donner is a far superior director, his Superman film embraces the comical, absurd, nature of Superman, California being nuked for beachfront property, yet a very human sincerity.

A lot of that is down to the directors, Richard Donner understood the source, and never took Superman too seriously, he's classes above Zack Snyder.

As someone who grew up without a father figure this scene is especially meaningful for me, describing my journey as a Christian to ultimately find God as my real Father. "You do not remember me- I am Jor-El; I am your father". Then as he takes Kal-El on a journey through time and space to his home planet, so God takes us, on a journey beginning in Genesis, showing us our beginnings and our home as it was before we became estranged. "The planet Krypton my son. Your home as it was"
there is something legit beautiful about brandos jor el. it almost makes you tear up. man this film is cheesy/ camp but i absolutely adore it

I would agree with that, except for the one part of the dialogue between the two numbers near the beginning: "...You will have reached your eighteenth year, as it is measured here.", followed by "... I will have been dead for many thousands of 'your' years." What is the next time frame he says? "...Twelve of 'your' years will have passed." So in terms of how old he is, I have reason to believe that when asked about it by Lois, he tells the truth when he says "Over twenty one" as that's closer to the actual age of his.

“The various concepts of immortality…and their basis in actual fact…” I always got a little sad because I got the impression from that that Jor-El knew that with Kal’s powers he would also out-live anyone on earth he’d ever know or love, and that more than his powers would make him one of the loneliest beings to ever live no matter how noble or wonderful he otherwise became. And we see it in the comics; Superman lives on into even a million years later, alone.

I don't know why they left parts of his speeh from the original. The part he said, "You're 18 now but I've been dead for thousands of years now." When I first heard that, I was like, 'Wow!' That shit is deep! It would've been so powerful if they left that part in the original.

Jor-El talks you through the basics and such and gives these same inspirational quotes before you're set free into the open world with the words "My only son" and the theme builds.

I grew up with this movie so I am partial to it but Marlin Brando's speeches have stuck with me all these years. The love of a parent and knowledge that Kal El is something special and really comes through in this movie.

I loved this scene as a child and still do now. Such emotion and wisdom power-packed, and power performed. Marlon Brando *was* Jor-El, an insightful and wise father. Wow. This was unmatched by anything in the new version, reasonably good movie that it was.
Always makes me tear up; this is the essence of Superman and is something we should all strive for in our own lives. Be the light that shines for others.

JAY OH Brando is KING. But Russel Crowe was chosen because of his voice. I suggested it during discussion with Ridley Scott in San Antonio, Tx. Ridley and I were watching "A Good Year" I suggested Russell portray Jor El and Ridley looked at me strangely and it was suggested and it happened.

This is one of my favorite scenes in the movie. The music and visuals add to the surreal atmosphere in this sequence. I was too young to have seen then when it first came out in 1978, or at least, my parents thought so as I was barely three years old. No worries, in November of 2018, I'm getting to see it for the first time on the big screen. Can't wait!
