This film is the standard at which all superhero films are compared to. Yes it is dated, but the story and the acting is bar none. It still holds up to today and is better than some superhero films to date.

I still have his autograph to this day. Its laminated. It says, 'To my Pal Matt. Christopher Reeve.' It was a real blessing to have that.
The symbols are very cool in this scene. Brando comes in with the mask, and as the Father symbol, imparts the knowledge of mankind and the universe in 5 minutes that supposedly lasts for 13 years. When the impartation is complete, Kal-El understands his immortality, and the powers manifest. Superman comes in like a modern angel ready to fight for truth...justice....very cool stuff.

Amazing how Mario Puzo created such an even more powerful and regal as well as iconic character for Marlon Brando to embody for the first time in a motion picture then the Godfather just a few years later! I still can't get over that Puzo scribed both stories, incredible!!!

John Williams wrote beautiful music in this movie. Especially in this scene at 2:51. I think Marlon Brando did the best acting in the movie. Brando did a much better job at playing "Jor-El" then Russell Crowe did!!!.

All he said was that Brando was better...that's a subjective argument...this isn't about which is a more faithful version, but which version any individual happens to like better. Both Crowe and Brando are superb actors, but I would say that Brando's vocal talents and presence are slightly more impactful than Crowe's. Also, there's a distinct difference in the content of their speeches: Crowe's Jor-El says humanity "will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall..." which is a pretty sad picture of humanity, whereas Brando's version says "They are a good people...they wish to be..." which presents a kinder picture of us. This is just one example of the major philosophical differences between the two films...one says "You will save this race because they are stupid and weak, but they have potential", the other says "these are good people, but they could be better, and I'm sending you to help them." Both are valid interpretations of Superman...it's a question of which one works better, and that question is debatable.
If I remember correctly, the S symbol is the family crest of the House of El, as they were nobility back on Krypton. The fact that it just happens to resemble an Earth S is a happy coincidence.

i think i like your reasoning better just because jor el stated that he had been dead for many thousands of superman's years. with that being said superman was with his father on a planet that would of been thousands of years older than earth, making superman already thousands of years older than the average human being, which is why he has those powers he evolved further than the average man.
I figured it was due to the effect of time dilation from interstellar travel causing Superman's relative local time to pass much more slowly in comparison to Krypton, meaning that even though to Clark he's 18 years old, an observer on Krypton would've experienced it as many thousands of years.
If you watch the behind the scenes on the DVD Richard Donner says it was Christopher Reeves, and they said they didn't even expect him to do it and the entire film crew cheered after he did it, and I think you can kind of tell it's him anyway, he did his own flying in every other scene, why not this one.
It seems more relevant in todays times for me...as a kid it was great but now I can appreciate it even more at times. Especially with a few drinks. Great scene.

I loved that they restored some of the Jor-El footage in the Donner recut of Superman II as well as the new Superman Returns movie.
Orginally they wanted to used Brando's face althrough the scene with him speaking, but nothing fx wise work. So they decided to use the space footage that was made up from macro underwater footage instead. I think it works much better.
Why does he cut off that great piece of music at the end! I would love to just go into Williams brain and find out how he came up with just the right cues and arcs and choruses! Amazing to this day! He made Superman even more powerful than his mythology with this classic score! Plus years later hearing it all on Smallville as a young adult, just the chills ran down my spine all over again!

He essentially takes the masculine journey / warrior training the way Bruce Wayne did or Luke Skywalker. Or even the hobbits in Lord of the Rings. In each of the cases there is a father figure answering the question of "who am I" for the 'son' and providing knowledge, discipline and virtue.
I wonder what exactly Clark Kent was doing while he was in training to become the Man of Steel during those 12 years. Why was Clark Kent called ‘Jonathan Clark Kent’ in Superman I? Clark was Martha Kent’s maiden name in the comic book - and much later in the ‘Smallville’ series as well. Jonathan Kent was his adoptive Earth-father.
Quite honestly, I thought this movie was silly. After the first two acts, it started feeling more like a Looney Tunes cartoon than a serious Superman movie. But this speech is the redeeming feature. It's really motivating, and even a little sad.
this is what the new Superman lacks. Kal-el received training in this movie. Knowledge of time and space, moral and otherwise, like he was learning from God, when he comes out HE IS SUPERMAN. Not some indecisive, emotional idiot like Cavils. This new Superman is just a guy who finds out he's an alien.

Sucks that you can't enjoy the movies for what they are instead of complaining about what they don't have. Personally I found MoS the most relatable and flawed version of Superman, it's very easy to feel empathy towards the character in MoS, because he's pretty much just a normal guy with good values who happens to have superpowers. He's simply human.

I guess that was their way of saying the Man of Steel is who he actually is and Clark Kent is just someone he pretends to be so he can work a job and spend time as a regular human. I'm always trying to find the score or soundtrack for this scene in the back without the talk but never can find it. It's a good soundtrack and it it plays the track with the talk of Jor-El.

Jor- El knew the earths sun would give his son the advantage he needed to survive. His intellect was far superior than any earthlings. He would look like one of them but he would not be one of them. His father felt his son would best benefit by comming to earth.If look at the beginning of the movie Jor El s wife questioned the reason of sending Kel- El to earth because the people of earth are so primitive. thounds of years behind Krypton. this is other reasons why he was sent to earth.
He said that line in Superman Returns at 2:38 and 4:35!

Why was Clark Kent called ‘Jonathan Clark Kent’ in Superman I? Clark was Martha Kent’s maiden name in the comic book - and much later in the ‘Smallville’ series as well. Jonathan Kent was his adoptive Earth-father.

Quite honestly, I thought this movie was silly. After the first two acts, it started feeling more like a Looney Tunes cartoon than a serious Superman movie.
But this speech is the redeeming feature. It's really motivating, and even a little sad.

this is what the new Superman lacks. Kal-el received training in this movie. Knowledge of time and space, moral and otherwise, like he was learning from God, when he comes out HE IS SUPERMAN. Not some indecisive, emotional idiot like Cavils. This new Superman is just a guy who finds out he's an alien.

Veego von DOOM- Reviews! Yeah, everybody has their own interpretation of who Superman is and what he represents. Sucks that you can't enjoy the movies for what they are instead of complaining about what they don't have. Personally I found MoS the most relatable and flawed version of Superman, it's very easy to feel empathy towards the character in MoS, because he's pretty much just a normal guy with good values who happens to have superpowers. He's simply human.
Saint Link I actually like MoS as an action movie. But they ruined his personality and continued to ruin it in BvS. That part where he says "No one stays good forever " and then flies off to kill Lex pisses me off. I mean really? Superman? At this point Captain America is more like Superman than Superman.

I have heard that one about Captain America but really that character is a caricature of a person, which is effectively what most of the marvel movies characters are, I don't think we'll agree here since I am very willing to accept a different approach to Superman, I like Superman 1978 for what it is, and I also like what Man of Steel did with the character, the essence is there, he just happens to live in a cynical world. Neither is better than the other.

@aigomar I think fans of comics (like yourself) realize that a key part of the mythos of Superman is about Jor-El. He was a man of science who gave his only son to us. Superman only exists in our minds; and we should try to be like him.
They can be a great people Kal El. They wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way....
We can be great in the future. Or go the way of Krypton..
@hottgirl924 Well, this is the only story I know of where Clark Kent disappears for over a decade and reappears as Superman. I guess that was their way of saying the Man of Steel is who he actually is and Clark Kent is just someone he pretends to be so he can work a job and spend time as a regular human. Most other versions have him actually go to college and spend years studying so he can be prepared for his journalism career after he graduates. I have seen all live-action stories for Superman.

@pluto4847 Are you somehow irritated by what I said? I simply said I liked Marlon Brando's performance in this movie. I was a little kid when this came out, and it is a great memory. Superman is a favorite icon of mine, and this movie (and Christopher Reeve) will always have a place in my heart. Is your last name Luthor, by any chance? BTW, addressing your questions- I don't know or care if he eats, dies, craps, farts, or whatever- Superman is AWESOME

Really? I thought the pauses looked natural. Like he was trying to think of the best phrase to describe this place. If he really did just forget them, then it's a tribute to his acting ability that he made it seem naturalistic.
