Being adopted and an only child myself, I cry every time Papa Kent's voice breaks when he says 'You are my son'. Those four words of acknowledgement, of pure choice, meant the world.

@Pxer I was adopted from Peru which might as well have been another planet from where I went, staten island new york. If you are adopted all you want is the acceptance and love of the people who adopted you. You want to feel like you are theirs because all you know is that your biological parents gave you up. This goes back to abandonment issues.

Fun fact: That piece of dialog is based on a real-life talk that David Goyer (who wrote the movie) had with his stepson. IMO that kinda adds to the emotion of the line because it’s a fictional interaction but it came from a place that was very real.

You have a roaring tornado in the backround and instead of creating urgency you slow down time to milk every ounce of drama out of this scene.
I like Snyder but he is so fucking bad at drama it's literally hillarious, he should direct bollywood movies or stick to action, or better yet just stop trying to be the main writer in all his movies, dude has a massive ego problem and it shows in his writing.

It's not a crime to tell your child that they're adopted, it's just immoral however to tell them that they aren't your child. Family goes beyond blood, Jonathan Kent and Martha Kent portrayed it by raising an alien as their own child without ever once betraying his faith in them. Even when Clark himself in his late teens (rebellious faze) told Jonathan that he wasn't his real father, his human parents never once said that he wasn't their son. Clark only understood this later on after traveling around the world & meeting his Kryptonian parents. I grew up without the presence of my father and had no siblings, but i found them in my grandfather and cousins. Clark definitely had it worse than most being the sole Kryptonian on a planet where he's basically a god, however he was adopted by 2 wonderful people. If you ever watched the Flashpoint Paradox Movie, you would see what would have happened to him had he been found by anyone else. It's one of the saddest Superman backstories in history.

And Jor-El’s statement as well. “They will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join in the Sun...” Citizens of the world were getting so caught up being so focused on Superman, whether for better or worse. For the worse part, humans became to threatened by him until they finally failed to understand him as what he really was and what he was just trying to do. And as for that consequence, he died sacrificing himself just to protect others. And by that, ppl finally came to realize that he was actually just a man who was just trying to do the right thing. I swear to God Zack delivered literally every last premise that he gave to us in the earlier movie and all of these are actually connected.

Jonathan doesn't know the anwser because he doesn't know how it is to have powers like this: how do you teach things to a teeneger with god like powers? This movie made me read superman comics and i can tell that the conflict of clark having god like powers is such a big issue, he could easily become a dictator if he wanted to. There are comics were you get to wonder if people of earth really deserve superman; and one of his villains, lex luthor tells the paradox of having someone like clark in the world. It is not as easy as it seems. In this scene clark ask for his father to tell him what to do but when you get older you get to understand that life is not as easy as it seems. Nobody can tell you what to do. Clark needs to learn to use his powers and to not abuse them and he needs to learn how the world works because is hard. He needs to be wise and humble.

I would love the build up to him finally flying and learning where he comes from to further find his purpose. Then that development halts when he still doesn’t trust the humans and needs a priest to encourage him to take the leap of faith (by that part he should have taken the leap of faith without the priest encouraging him). jonathan is simply torn between being a good man n a good father. as a good man, he knows he shouldnt tell clark to let people die. but as a good father, he also knows that if clark is exposed to the world, everyone would freak out, especially governments n shit. clark's safety would be compromised, especially when clark is vulnerable as a kid at this point. u can see the example here in clark's friend's mother, thinking clark is the next jesus n some shit.
hell, what jonathan feared actually happened in bvs. some r afraid of clark, some think of him as something he isnt, some think of what he could do if he bypassed laws n politics, some want him gone from earth, etc. everyone freaked out. if jonathan said what u want him to say, that would make him a good man but a shitty father.

I always saw the, “I don’t know, maybe” part as humanizing Jonathan Kent. As good as a man as he is he’s still human who doesn’t have all the answers. I agree they could have written it in a better light, but I thought it came across clearly. As an average human he believes what Clark did was right, but as a father who is concerned for his son, he also sees the consequences of what could happen if his powers are discovered. It’s a complicated situation and I think this scene was meant to show Jonathan admitting to his son that he doesn’t have all the answers.
I also felt that Jonathan Kent sacrificing himself wasn’t to prevent humanity from seeing what Clark could do, but to make sure Clark would be ready to reveal himself to the world when he’s had experience.
Is it the best Superman movie?
To me, no; but I still think it’s a great film that is underrated. I feel like I remember the critics and rotten tomatoes score for Man of Steel actually being pretty good until Batman v Superman came out and then that when I feel like I started seeing all the hate on this film.

This superman is not just only for America/Metropolis to put their faith in, but for the whole world. At least thats what i felt MoS and BvS did better than any other version.

Man of Steel was a CBM but it also wanted its viewers to ask themselves the question of what would you do in the Kent families shoes? What would you do in Clark's shoes? And most people weren't ready for that and only now realize that yeah this movie was asking serious questions and put forth the idea of what would happen if Superman was real.

People totally miss the "maybe" line from Jonathan. He knows Clark can't, and shouldn't, let kids die. But his priority is to protect his son until he's ready. Because he knows how the world will react. He saw it with the neighbor family there. It is literally like if God appeared on Earth in human form. It would be chaos. He's worried for the well being of his kid, first and foremost. But he knows that he can't hide forever or let people die, because that would be wrong. People want it so cut and dry now. They want Jonathan to just tell Clark to just "be a savior." Except Jonathan is a human who understands how the world works. Jor-El is the one who at first pushes Kal to be the savior. It's the meshing of two fathers by the end that is the centerpiece of the story. Beautiful. People are idiots.

wrong. that scene doesnt work because it undermines his personality. its ironic but that scene happens ALOT. i was just rewatchign Lois and clark(yeah the 90's series), and they also had that scene.
the diference is that, in here, Pa Kent is telling him he should prioritize himself above others, but the problem is, it happens AFTER he does it. which makes the "maybe" into a yes.
while in L&C, when he says he shouldnt do it, not Clark but his mother comes in defense of his decision. because she understand that while risky, this is who he is.
similarly, that scene also happened in Across the spiderverse. where Miles is told that he should allow someone he cares to die, so the others survive.
and that scene also works because its given to him BEFORE it happens, which allows him to rise against that idea. as a hero he should never feel like this is a choice.
the movie then wrongs it AGAIN as Pa Kent does the stupidiest death possible, in the most convoluted way. which reinforces his stupidity as opposed to his love.

The seriousness and darkness of the real human condition when facing a being like Superman. This movie was so fucking bold and, in my opinion, ahead of its time.
Is very simple, people don't want to think with a super hero movie. They want a simple story, a good and a bad guy. A good guy that is just good just because. The perfect hero, the one above all. You wanna know why there is never a super hero movie in Oscar talks? But they are NOT fucking good, period. The Dark Knight was also a step on the right direction, but still with those comedy lines you could smell the "well, is superhero movie...people should laugh right?". I mean, try to compare Avengers to something like Dallas Buyers Club, Moonlight etc.
Was Man of Steel the answer? No. But I hope time will see it for what it is: A BOLD director that said................what if superhero movies can be something more than high budget action-comedy films?
People are judging an apple for not looking like an orange.

Jose Striedinger I think the problem runs deeper than just movies. A lot of people don't want to think about anything. They're afraid of confronting themselves, and these types of movies stir up a sort of self inflection a majority feel uncomfortable to face. They want absolute good because anything less is seen as a "flaw". Their own self perception is projected through the very criticism they instill on these movies, games....reality itself.
Well written comment, made me think.

    • @dicktracy4306

Or maybe they just don't want to pay to watch a reminder of how lame and depressing real life can be. It's called "escapism", whoever argues superhero movies were anything other than that is either dumb, lying or in denial, possibly all three. Superman was made for kids first and foremost, but manchildren think they have to turn things made for kids into something "intellectual" or they feel bad about liking it too. You all are the reason the DCU tanked, and you didn't learn your lesson because now you blame Joss Whedon, the only guy who judging from the only good JL scenes understood how a proper superhero movie has to be: fun, adventurous, quippy with some very slight drama to spice things up.

And then he proceeds with his sentence and you realize it was an open ended statement. But then you also realize he's a father. And that speaks to you no a different level... because at some points fathers will be willing to burn down everything, kill who he has to kill, let people die if it comes to it, for the safety of his son. Honestly never would've thought of Kevin Costner for Pa Kent but when I heard he was cast I saw it right away. Terrific performance and, though some hated it, I loved the 'maybe'. He's a Midwestern farmer raising a super-powered alien - this is way above his pay grade and he doesn't have all the answers. His concern about the world's response to learning about Clark feels so genuine. He knows it's impossible to keep Clark hidden in Smallville forever but while he's still a kid he just wants to protect his boy.
