      Preach. Actually chinese tech medias are doing so many tests and benchmarks to test a new chip. They usually review a phone like a laptop or desktop. They not only focus on daily uses but also on detailed things like thermal or push it to the limit and see what it capable of. we see those kinda of reviews a lot in China but not very often on TH-cam or more specific on English speaking TH-camrs. Yeah, we definitely need more.

    I just stumbled upon this review due to YT recommendations and I can say that I'm happy that this was recommended. Compared to the usual phone reviews, e.g. Marques Brown Lee's channel, these types of reviews talking about the CPU itself will make me really think twice about buying a new phone.
    I don't care if the phone has all the latest and greatest features available if the CPU is not worth upgrading to compared to my current phone running SD 865.
    Keep on doing what you do best guys!

    • @Some-guy-on-the-internet

      If you have an 865 then there's no need to upgrade anytime soon. That chip will keep performing great for years to come. I'm on an 855 (technically an 860 but it's the same chip essentially) and I don't intend to upgrade within at least the next 6 years. Ideally, I'm gonna try to keep my current phone well into the next decade. Throwing away a perfectly good phone just to have the latest chip is extremely wasteful.

    @zarent01 2 ปีที่แล้ว +507

    I really appreciate that you had so much details covered in the original Chinese review but I didn't expect there was an English version, cheers. In regards to the topic of the video, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is yet another letdown from Qualcomm, thinking that they'd realise their mistakes. It'd be more suitable to be put in a tablet rather than a phone. Now I'm hoping they can make a successor to Snapdragon 778G.

    • @petouser
      @petouser 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      I think the 778G is perfectly fine and I don't think it needs a successor per se. There isn't much too improve. It's probably the best chip in terms of performance to money ratio, and that's basically what they aim for with that SoC. Rather there should be a strong premium chip based on TSMC's 6nm process. Basically a Snapdragon 870 but more modern and with TSMC's 6nm process. They should call it Snapdragon 875, and it could be Qualcomm's most efficient SoC.

    • @zarent01
      @zarent01 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@petouser Sure it is fine, I'd say even Snapdragon 730 is more than enough but that shouldn't be an excuse for Qualcomm to remain stagnant. What I liked about the Snapdragon 778G is that the clock speeds are modest but still performs well and has the latest features along with being efficient on 5nm Samsung EUV. The weakest point would be its GPU perf.
      However, the existence of 870 is strange which is essentially a rebranded S865 aimed to compete with the likes of slightly revised Dimensity 1200 and Exynos 1080. Now that there are small leaks of upcoming midrange chipsets from Mediatek and Samsung tuned for the best nodes, Qualcomm will be playing catch up if they do not release an updated chipset. Snapdragon "875" on 6nm TSMC would be better but it wouldn't sound as good on paper as chipsets on 5nm even if those did worse plus S888 and 8G1 are on 5nm.
      But if they don't upgrade, it might not matter considering Qualcomm's marketing and market share. All of this is merely theorising anyways.

    I traded my Xiaomi Mi 11 (SD888) to an Asus ROG Phone 3 (SD865+). The Mi 11 heats up really fast, even while just casual use like browsing, to the point where it is aleady uncomfortable to touch. I already tried flashing a custom ROM and playing around the kernel settings, downclocking, still heats up fast.
    And now we have benchmarks proving that the latest Snapdragon chip suffers the same issue of the SD888. I am glad I chose to downgrade to SD865+. It is really a stable chip, especially on sustained performance.

      At this point, qualcomm should just pair that gpu with the 865's cpu and we'd have a chip with reasonably high specs all around.
      This won't help as he showed that in Genshin Impact, the GPU utilization didn't go above 50-60%. Meaning it is the CPU that is holding fps back. If you pair 865's CPU with 8G1's GPU the GPU utilization won't go above 35-40%. It is better to pair the 865 CPU with a GPU which is less powerful. If you do that.. you will get S865 CPU with S865 GPU.
      So.. yeah. Android flagships' chipsets haven't improved much since 2019 when it comes to performance at a reasonable power consumption.

      @@shinobi_endure You may have a point. I based my better gpu + 865 cpu = good argument on the cpu/gpu utilization numbers from game turbo/armory crate. On the mi 10T pro /mi 11 / ROG 5, the utilization percentages show 60% cpu, 80-something gpu so I assumed the gpu is the cause for the bottleneck. I didn't fully account for the inaccuracy of built in monitoring apps. We are on the same page with qualcomm's extremely inefficient chips tho.

Or just go for a new iPhone with the new A16 towards the end of the year. Still stuck on a snapdragon 865 device cause of these shitty 888 and 8 gen 1 chips.

    It's just me thinking but you probably used a prototype phone. So I guess there is a good chance that the phones sold are getting optimized better. The Xiaomi 12 is already released in China but I guess it will receive some software optimization.
    Anyway, it's funny how the Snapdragon 865/865+/870 is still the benchmark as the most efficient qualcomm phone. In my opinion, Qualcomm should make a flagship chip based on TSMC's 6nm process since that's the best what they can get from TSMC currently.
    I'm looking forward to how the MediaTek 9000 will compete.

    Keep in mind that the early Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 was made by Samsung, and they've always had thermal throttling issues in the past. Because Apple booked majority of TSMC's 5nm process, they didn't have much of a choice. Good news is that Snapdragon will slowly move to TSMC as more slots are available.

    I do agree it’s a piece of shi* . The Samsung process node or the arm cores , not sure which is more to blame but both are uninspiring. Arms cores have always been a far cry from what apple produces and … ya , the Samsung process nodes usually aren’t that bad but not as good as tsmc . More power hungry and slower than apple still , man this is getting ridiculous. It’s the same story again. The last snapdragon I was excited about was the 855. The 855 was actually quite competitive with the A12 and it was also very power efficient. I want those good days back

Makes me get the feeling that they don't actually make power usage improvements with each SOC release, but instead focuses the benefits of a smaller node on performance improvements just for marketing.

    Hmm I want to see how well Samsung manages to optimise the chip first. Given it's brand new in so many ways it might just be too difficult for other company's to utilise properly. Saw the Sam thing last year with the 888 where the performance of the chip was SIGNIFICANTLY better on phones launched towards the end of last year.
    If that's the case then I guess I'm expecting 1300 single core & 3900 multi core

    • @imwsss726
      @imwsss726 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      No. It’s just slightly better thermos control on the later phones… For example Galaxy S21 Ultra has one of the worst thermos design among all SD 888 Phones, with extremely conservative software strategy and very good screen refresh rate management, so at least the basic experience is smooth and customers won’t feel that hot/power-hungry. But the price is for example the significant worse gaming frame rate, and overall power efficiency is still worse than SD865/870 phones, software management can’t change it.
