Finally, someone showcases the true modding wonders of the Switch! There was nothing quite like a fully unlocked Switch until the Steam Deck arrived. Running Kodi, Android TV and RetroArch on this machine is beautiful (I even made a fine custom Mega Bezels NTSC+CRT RetroArch shader preset specifically optimized for the Switch), and at home, I actually prefer streaming games from my actual PC on the network using Sunshine or Steam Link over actually attempting to run them on the Switch itself. Having a v1 unit with the original 20nm Tegra X1, I don't have the luxury of pushing the clocks nearly as hard, but the memory overclocks that are in my reach are still good enough to fix the usual performance issues plaguing many retail Switch games. And when I'm feeling rebellious, I also stream plenty of emulated Wii, Wii U and 3DS games on the Switch from my desktop, even getting to use the Switch touchscreen for those games. Running the entire operation on my local network, performance isn't actually bad at all, and it also means getting to play RTX titles with the Switch at 60fps, which is quite the trippy sight, even if it's actually just acting as a wireless display and controller combo.
i dont think its completely fair to credit this to the switch... nintendo try to do everything to stop people from using their device as they see fit, switch is intended to be an locked platform except that nintendo failed at it, the modders or in this case linux is the one who deserve credits. im saying that because there is no guarantee that future nintendo consoles will be unlocked like that any time soon, they will try to make it harder and harder each generation, while platforms like the steam deck are quite the opposite, funding valve means funding this openes (at least for now, if they dont change their mind in the future, steam client is proprietary but at least steamOS is floss)
@@igorgiuseppe1862 Personally, even better if a corporation tries their absolute A game to lock a device down only to have all those artificial locks completely and thoroughly destroyed by the community. I want them to waste their time and money, only for their years of work to be defeated in a month's time. Nintendo has a history of trying the best lockdown techniques available only to have them fall completely flat because Nintendo hackers do not rest until they leave no stone unturned and no lock intact. We need more scenes like the Nintendo scene. The Switch was destined to be cracked wide open in record time from the beginning regardless of how good of a job Nintendo did on its security, like every other Nintendo console before it. So much so, it even brought collateral damage as various other previously secure devices also got cracked because of the Switch due to sharing similar architecture. They want to be the Disney/Apple hybrid of game consoles so bad and their own fans just won't let them. And I love them for it. Still, I won't deny it. Valve's been doing god's work out there, and the Steam Deck is a marvelous piece of technology with unrivaled features out of the box. It is thanks to Valve's work on Proton that my life as a Linux gamer became so much easier. And if the Steam Deck had existed when I bought my Switch, I probably would've gotten it instead. Heck, I might just buy a Steam Deck either way. But I never buy systems that I can't unlock.
By the way, proper 64bit WoW64 support for Wine is coming. It will finally allow people to run old 32bit Windows software on 64bit-only Linux without requiring multilib, and make it easier to implement CPU architecture translation overall. This, combined with DXVK, might be the step that finally allows people to easily play old PC games on their Android and other mobile devices.
@@3lH4ck3rC0mf0r7 i dont think that hackers that try to hack nintendo consoles are better than the ones who try to hack other devices, the issue is that nintendo is less competent when it comes to lock their devices. that is why i dont think the solution is to have more hackers, soon or later we might be defeated by companies, having more hackers or better is part of the solution but the most important part is not to support $$ those companies to begin with. companies like valve are much better in that regard, they could try to enter the console market with an closed system and ecosystem but chosen not to, the way they "fight" against piracy is mostly trying to offer an better service than betting on things like DRM.
Yes it's the same engine (Unity) but they both use different graphics API backends. Genshin uses OpenGL which has horrible single core CPU bound, Star Rail uses Vulkan which is multicore friendly if designed properly. Both has janky Lua interpreter but Star Rail doesn't always need to run those code all the time.
Just wait until cassia releases. A windows emulation layer for Android. Uses the same gimmicks used in this video and is developed by the devs that previously worked on the skyline emulator.
Excellent video, That was super cool to watch and very well paced. The conclusion was actually quite inspiring and I might try to document a similar set of tools and applications I've been exploring with my smartwatch in the near future particularly with emulation and those "impossible to run" games. It kinda goes to show that computers aren't exactly defined by hardware anymore but rather by what software people can work on and develop.
Way to go man! I've been trying to do this sort of stuff for about a month already but I only got so far. I didn't know the tidbit about dxvk; I'm gonna have to rewatch your video the next time I try this. Also a warning for anybody who wants to try this: Do not install the L4T megascript version of Steam unless you install box64, install wine, and then build Box86 first: it uses a newer version of Glibc than 18.04 has (I think it's 2.29, whereas 18.04 only supports 2.27). No idea why they did this. It worked once, but I had to reinstall Linux, and it wouldn't work after.
I have a 2017 model and it handles overclocking ok, The fact it can run gta 5 is mind blowing. I would love to see a dedicated video showing windows games running with as low of settings as possible. I believe gta 5 would run much better with shadows off and all graphics options at the lowest :). Great video!
It not as surprising tbh Technically speaking the tegra x1 cpu even while downclocked is pretty much equal to the xbox 36p and ps3 cpu While the gpu absolutely crushes both
if you haven't already, look into undervolting as well as overclocking. You can squeeze even more power out of that chip and run a lot of games at 60fps, which is just crazy to see on a launch model switch
if you can run those games, even at an low FPS , that means lightweight games should work just fine. maybe something like portal and porta 2 (ok those are avaliable for switch, but you can test games from the same era )
This is REALLY awesome! Indie games are more cheaper on Steam than eShop generally so i guess its worth to make all this long journey to run linux and steam on Switch :D
Amazing video, guys. You do really set the bar on a different level. Now I am really excited with the idea of seeing a snapdragon 8 gen 2 on Linux running those games.
Installing linux on a phone is extremely difficult. You have to manually build drivers which are proprietary. And manually compile the kernel. You can try to run it inside Android with a Proot distro. Hardware acceleration is the tricky part
This video is very special to me because it proves a point i've been making for years. Nintendo could have released a Switch Pro using the exact same SOC. Theres a considerable amount of people that think the Oled didnt became the Pfo due to chip shortages. Well this video serves as strong evidence that it wasnt the case.
Impressive job nevertheless to get all this running on that hardware! Box64 is quite impressive too, not quite as optimized as Apples Rosetta2 but thinking it is a community project with limited resources is wow! Still switch hardware is quite old and can’t keep up. But running some smaller, older 2016 titles might be actually possible!!
Well you got yourself another subscriber. If you can switch between the stock OS and Linux I could find some use for this, that's if external monitors can still be used.
I'm impressed. But with the recent reveal of the Switch 2, I was trying to find a way to relife my Switch. So, I did the same thing as you, only I am running android 10 to run the Steam link app. Streaming Steam to the switch, when paired with the Nitro Deck +, feels like a smaller Steam Deck. This is now my preferred way of playing any of my Steam games, and I can stream to multiple devices.
@@ProfessorMembrane373 technically it probably isn't impossible, but even if someone managed to make it run on switch you'd still be using compatibility layers to run steam and games so there's really no benefit of doing it
Despite the obnoxious voice, THIS! Now this is what I needed to see! Straight to the point and wow! Steam literally running on the Switch?? Not through some streaming app that every other tech/switch tuber has shown. But that seems to be in vain…. least it works haha. What would’ve made doing all this even sweeter is dual booting; From Switch to Android/Linux and back. Honestly I want to emulate Android and play MGRR. Plus Remote Play and Game Pass. But I need that Dual Boot cuz I want to play my Switch games. Just having that makes the Switch all the better and will wait for a Steam Deck 2. Seeing you play HSR and doing all this, “Rules were meant to be broken”
This leaves me thinking what would be possible to do with a Jeston Orin! I really would love to test it myself but I don't have the funds to buy one just for testing this. I would hope that you could test it for all of us see how far can we go with the translation layers! Thanks for the great work!
@@tappy8741 No, it's a SBC that runs ARM, so imagine that you have a phone chip but you can use like 15 to 25W. It's the same concept as the Switch actually but way more recent. The SBC version of the switch SoC was commercialized as the Jetson Nano, the current version of that product is named Jetson Orin, it has AI accelerator logic but it still has the normal CPU/GPU, but the current CPU cores are way faster than the Nano and the GPU is way bigger and has a much newer architecture.
@@Guilherme_Oliveira72 I understand that as a modern chip it iterates cpu/gpu and will be on a much better node, the cpu in particular is much improved. Still they've pushed AI in the marketing and may have de-emphasized raster performance in favour of cuda cores for ai/ml if it came to it, if I were to guess the gpu may not be as impressive for gaming as you might imagine. But 17 billion is a lot of transistors, if we're lucky they've "wasted" some of them re-using consumer raster instead of designing a more optimal AI solution for their primary purpose. Samsung 8nm is pretty good, behind tsmc 7nm but either at this point will be cheap as they are not bleeding edge but still pretty efficient. It's like 5 year old tech, best suited to large wide designs at lower clocks for power efficiency.
@sawyiier4870 I'm excited for the next Switch, but this video really shows how bad the Tegra was in the CPU side of things, and DLSS doesn't really solve a CPU bottleneck. Hopefully NVIDIA will ship a better CPU this time around, if a Maxwell GPU already went that far then an Ampere GPU with DLSS could be mind-blowing on Switch.
@@LuizFernando-li1du I guess Nvidia will collaborate with a CPU manufacturing company like mediatek, like samsung did with AMD for their mobile GPU in Exynos chip.

didn't check geekerwan's video for a while, but it still as high quality as ever!
The fact you actually got the games working natively is an impressive achievement, well done guys!
Wow, this is an incredible achievement! I don't think anyone imagined that getting in game on any of those titles was possible
i am surprised i never found this channel before. excellent video! good job!
Interesting that Star Rail is more GPU bound and Genshin more CPU bound despite both developed by mihoyo and probably based on the same engine.
Probably because Star Rail is more linear while Genshin is an open world
Funny story seems that Genshin is about to switch the engine optimization by 4.0.
@@lrc3847Source? Haven’t heard anything about that.
absolutely stunning visuals, they complement your narration perfectly!
Came for the mobile chip effeciency graphs, stayed for the quirky console videos
Thank you for making quality tech content and not only mainstream !
its insane how well optimized titanfall 2 is, runs even on a switch wow.
This is my first foray into your content and wow!!!! I had fun watching everything you did!!!! 10/10 You are really cool!!! 😊
Wonder how the 8G2 or even an 8G3 would perform in these tests.
Really, really good. I think GoW would run with 30fps and 720p.
@@iamnotkurtcobain easily if properly optimise
Just wait until cassia releases. A windows emulation layer for Android. Uses the same gimmicks used in this video and is developed by the devs that previously worked on the skyline emulator.
I honestly feel your passion and understand. It's awesome when you love something and it keeps you going.
I never thought I would actually understand numbers 😂.. You got yourself a sub Sir.
Amazing video!!! Excited to see this with the switch 2 lol, didn't expect to see titanfall2 running at ~25 lol
I have a 2017 model and it handles overclocking ok, The fact it can run gta 5 is mind blowing. I would love to see a dedicated video showing windows games running with as low of settings as possible. I believe gta 5 would run much better with shadows off and all graphics options at the lowest :). Great video!
It not as surprising tbh
Technically speaking the tegra x1 cpu even while downclocked is pretty much equal to the xbox 36p and ps3 cpu
While the gpu absolutely crushes both
if you haven't already, look into undervolting as well as overclocking. You can squeeze even more power out of that chip and run a lot of games at 60fps, which is just crazy to see on a launch model switch
I thought you gave up this channel, but you didn't. Big thumb up!
Really shows off how strong Switch still is inside. With the right optimization and developer motivation it can pull off anything at 720p.
Haven't watched the video yet, but judging from the comments and the title you deserve a thumbs up.
This is nuts but great. If I had a second first gen Switch, I'd try this.
This a true legit tech channel compare to anyone whose just show benchmarks and shlts
The amount of work you put into these videos is why I'm subscribed. You'll be at 1 mil subs easily with this quality of content.
This is the only channel that doesn't lie about running steam on switch. No steam link isn't running steam on switch
if you can run those games, even at an low FPS , that means lightweight games should work just fine.
maybe something like portal and porta 2 (ok those are avaliable for switch, but you can test games from the same era )
i like how technical this video gets
This is REALLY awesome! Indie games are more cheaper on Steam than eShop generally so i guess its worth to make all this long journey to run linux and steam on Switch :D
thats the most nerd stuff that i have watched today and I LOVED IT, ITS PERFECT
This guys videos never disappoint.
@@dustux I am pretty sure it is difficult. I have just got excited. Like the author of the video, I really like this field of technology.
I feel nintendo has had a history of making consoles with trash specs but they somehow put amazing titles on them without lag
This video is very special to me because it proves a point i've been making for years. Nintendo could have released a Switch Pro using the exact same SOC.
Theres a considerable amount of people that think the Oled didnt became the Pfo due to chip shortages. Well this video serves as strong evidence that it wasnt the case.
yep a properly undervolted/overclocked Mariko unit is literally a Switch Pro. Almost everything runs at 60fps with higher graphics
Imagine running a minecraft server on your switch
Impressive job nevertheless to get all this running on that hardware! Box64 is quite impressive too, not quite as optimized as Apples Rosetta2 but thinking it is a community project with limited resources is wow! Still switch hardware is quite old and can’t keep up. But running some smaller, older 2016 titles might be actually possible!!
You're really underrated man. Hope more people will know day by day
You and your team are awesome...
this is unbelievable, I obviously don't know crap about my Switch's abilities and possibilities
I need to go study now 🤩
Well you got yourself another subscriber.
I wonder how well these games would work at 720p, low settings or under 720p. There's also a ARM version of Windows that might give better results.
It's not possible to install ARM version of Windows on Switch though
@@ProfessorMembrane373
technically it probably isn't impossible, but even if someone managed to make it run on switch you'd still be using compatibility layers to run steam and games so there's really no benefit of doing it
Dang! I got a nice endorphin hit modding an OG XB with a 1TB Sata drive but this is completely unreal! Awesome vid!
Extremely interesting. I'm surprised you haven't overclocked the steam deck yet. tons of potential there for tweaking.
Im not even 1 minute into the video and im already hooked
You are the reason I don't go out for movies anymore, saves me a lot of money and is so so so much more satisfying. Please don't ever stop.
Devs are amazing for making beautiful looking games on the Switch.
Seeing you play HSR and doing all this, “Rules were meant to be broken”
i would love to see if you guys can somehow make a gaming phone with a high end graphics card
they somehow had done it, but not a English version
@@TheOneHongyou got link bro?
Linus and all the Tech or Switch channel should highlight this man.
This leaves me thinking what would be possible to do with a Jeston Orin! I really would love to test it myself but I don't have the funds to buy one just for testing this. I would hope that you could test it for all of us see how far can we go with the translation layers! Thanks for the great work!
Isn't that an AI accelerator chip? The cpu/gpu may be better than this chip, but it'll still be pretty crap.
This was a great watch. Quality content. I 100% get more enjoyment from tweaking the systems then actually playing most of the time.
This actually shows how much ahead of time Nvidia tegra processors were in terms of GPU.
I only can image what they could have done in today's market.
A switch 2 with next gen tegra and a big cpu upgrade would be so good
@@antusThulplus the new techs like dlss and frame generation in small screen this will make the switch 2 a really good gaming machine
@@antusThul Nintendo doesn't care _at all_ about whatns going on in the performance world. They make billions off this ancient piece of tech and games that never go on sale. Pretty much the most toxic gaming developer on the planet.
I don’t even have a switch and I’m subscribing great video
WE NEED ANOTHER "DIY" GAMING PHONE 📱🎮
With SD8G2
after only 30sec i knew i have to subcribe this channel🤣
damn you pushed the switch way beyond it's limits i love it
this was really fun to watch. and no wonder why MiHoYo hasbeen radio silent on Genshin for the Switch. At least we finally know why. I would honestly greatly prefer Honkai Star Rail to be ported anyways havent touched Impact since Star Rail released 😆 MiHoYo could at least say " we tried and failed" with impact though.
The end was literally the reason i watched this! It's not about it running the games well. its about just breaking the rules and making the hardware do something it wasnt meant to!
As usuall, Great video. Im surprised that despite the switch's 8 year old tegra x1 processor(which itself is downclocked for switch), it can keep up decently enough with some demanding games.
Also Maybe one day we might get a proper Genshin Impact port on the switch
Hopefully
pls miHoYo
Glad to have found this channel
Dave2D, Linus and MKBHD need to check Geekerwan approach to testing, it is jam packed with tons of meaningful content compacted in a short time. Marvelous!
You absolute maniac! Keep it coming and don't stop.
Would love to see these translation layers on a raspberry pi
