Living in Canada has become a luxury. So many immigrants want to move here for whatever reason, but now Canadians of all kinds are looking to move out because they can't afford the essentials, like a roof over your head, and ah, food. Suddenly, it's become all about money and not about quality of life. Very sad, if you ask me.

The people who are fortunate and also worked very hard were those people who bought homes in the heart of the city in early 2000s. I'm from the UK, I want to move to Canada and Toronto is my preferred place. Watching this video has not put me off at all. Everything that was mentioned is worse in the UK. When you add in the exchange rate then $10-15 a pint becomes average for where I live, and I don't live in or near a major city. I know well educated immigrants living in rooms for almost 1800 per month. The landlord stacks 4 to 5 to a floor. There are three floors. There is no possibility of them buying a home let alone renting an apartment. It is a classic "not in my backyard" problem where homeowners view the problem differently. Canada has broken its promise to having a middle class unless you want to live in North Bay and work the corporate ladder at Tim Horton's. There will not be a real estate correction to fix it either.

If they're paying $1,800 per room, they're probably living Downtown in a 2 bedroom. There are more affordable options if people would just look for apartments that are a little further North. Downtown is just too expensive.
It's May 2022 and I'm currently living in Midtown Toronto in an apartment that's a stone's throw away from Yonge Street. I can actually see the nearest Subway station and streetcars from my balcony. I'm currently paying $1,600 a month including utilities. I don't have any roommates so that rent is for an entire apartment. I don't think my rent is too excessive considering I can walk to the Harbour-front if I want to, which I actually do on weekends. 🙂

I've lived in Scarborough most of my life before moving to North York. Technically Amalgamation means I've lived in Toronto all my life. Toronto is a great city and would recommend moving here. But there's a caveat that you're ok moving to a city which is nothing but a shadow of its former self. Most of what made Toronto exceptional has been gutted for condos or is too expensive for the commoner to afford. So if you're ok with a basic "cosmopolitan" city, Toronto is ok for you.
While the list to stay away from Toronto was fair, it missed two important points.

"newcomers" are severely discriminated in Toronto and Canada - they want people with Master's and PhD to come and clean their toilets - that's it in a nutshell. They're done taking it out on those poor children in those schools they committed all those horrors and now they need new victims to take it out on. Why they're like that and have those ingrained tendencies to behave this way - it's beyond me. The settler colonial curse perhaps...

Supply and demand has very little to do with unaffordable housing in Toronto. It's all about the entry of the financial sector (funds, private equity, limited partnerships, foreign investors, etc.) into real estate. Loyalty is to the investors, not the renters and mortgagors. The goal is to build cheap and rent high. Buy a building cheap, surface fix up, double the rent, move on to the next property, further and further out as properties for fixing up in the city dry up.

    • @raymondcouture9374
      @raymondcouture9374 2 ปีที่แล้ว

They still have to find someone who can pay the inflated rent... Easier said than done.
When you say 'Buy a building cheap' you mean in a rundown part of the city. Not exactly the kind of place someone willing to pay $2,700 for a one bedroom will look at. If I could afford the cost of an appartment downtown Toronto, I would not be willing to pay the same $$$ for a hole in Flemington park, Thorncliffe park, Regent park or in the exotic Jane and Finch jungle.

Cheap lending and mortgagers taking advantage of it to purchase a primary residence ARE the main problem. Artificially low interest rates set by the BOC subsidize over-leveraged homeowners at the expense of everyone else (Renters, retirees on fixed income etc) . And if these yuppies mortgages go into default, the taxpayer is expected to foot the bill (thanks to the CMHC which should be abolished)
There is no reason a homeowner shouldnt pay capital gains tax when they sell their primary residence like I pay when I buy or sell stocks or recieve dividends in my tiny stock portfolio.
The problem is these yuppies sinking all of their money into a primary residence and then flipping and selling it tax free. Large scale REITS who do a proper and professional job of building and maintaining rental units are not the problem, in fact they are part of the soltuion. The problem is amateur overleveraged homeowners who are looking to "flip" for a quick buck. Close the primary residence tax loophole and raise rates in to 7-8% minimum. Get rid of CMHC insurance and let bad mortgages fail.

It's our dream to move to Toronto. It seems the perfect fit for us. We love anything international and have been living in London, UK for many years so we know what it means to live in an expensive city. Paying 3500 Canadian Dollars for a 100sqm apartment + utilities is the norm to us. I've had to pay 170 Dollars for my monthly public transport there and I had a car which cost me 120 Dollars a month in insurance, 530 a year for taxes and 120 a year for street parking. People in London also get the winter blues (aka winter depression). Daylight starts at around 8 - 9am and it already gets dark at 4pm so you're always in the dark. Nothing you've said actually put me off.
I've not seen / visited Toronto but would like to do so in 2023. I'm about to get my BA in Computer Science from the university of London and the other half has 20+ years experience in Digital Marketing and will be getting an MBA soon. I hope that sets us up for visa entry requirements. We both speak English fluently but not a single word of French. I guess for us it's that we're from Europe and we don't get along with the culture here. I love the English speaking world.

I have lived in Toronto for 50 yrs and it has changed tremendously. The construction is overwhelming everywhere. Driving is treacherous! It has changed so much and not for the good. The new bike lanes which was a good idea, it has caused City driving extremely dangerous. I witnessed a few bikers almost killed. The City Planning Department is where the big issues are. They honestly don’t know what they are doing, I live in a midtown apartment and at the moment there is construction on every side of the building. They list this building as a premier building… lol!. There is a future 31 floor apartment building that will be shoehorned in on the property in the next year or so. And I mean shoehorned! They are putting a parkette a few feet away from the balconies on the south side of this building and it literally is a few feet away from the largest park in the City. On top of all what the tenants have gone through and still going through they are given above guideline increases. Which means instead of paying 1.2% they get charged 3.5% on top of the 1.2% annually. They have been doing this for 3 years in a row, This is a building that was built in the 60’s. You ask, why not move. Well you can thank our Premier Ford. He took off rental control from any building that is built after 2018. That means landlords can raise the rent to whatever they what. A couple in the news brought their story and their rent was raised by 25% in a year. It literally is a no win situation. They say they are building all these condos or apartments for affordable living. That literally is a joke. Do they think a 1 bedroom with parking close to $3,000 is affordable! They are constantly cutting down huge beautiful trees. The area around my building had 35 cut down, And they keep professing they are all about environment! Seriously!

City life is great but there are lots of disadvantages specially when you are building and establishing a family. Job opportunities are overwhelming, but the prices of real estate here is unaffordable and so expensive. You need to spend 5 to 10 years in work to earn and have a Downpayment. If you have lots of money then I suggest you move here, but if you are just an average earner then you have to think it again. Just my only 2cent opinion.

I agree. I grew up south of Toronto in a mid-size city and always dreamed of moving to Toronto. I lived there in the late 90's, moved away and then back again from 2005 to 2009. In the late 90's I was paying $425 for a bachelor apartment across the road from Trinity Bellwoods park and was thinking of buying a condo on Queen West across from the park. It was a 1 bedroom with 2 storeys for around 135K. That same condo would be over 700K+ now. It's crazy how the prices have gone up. How do people who work low wage jobs such as food servers in places where they don't get high tips, etc. afford to live there? Unless you live right down town between Lansdowne and Sherbourne and Bloor and Adelaide or King street the transit is awful. Cold? It's not that bad. If you live right down town you are kind of shielded from the wind and the crews clean up the snow pretty quickly. I think if you grow up in T.O. and have a family house that is handed down or you bought prior to 2010 then T.O. would be a great place to live. Renters should avoid it like the plague. It's one of the most expensive rental cities in the world now. Toronto is, in my opinion, highly overrated compared to other large cities across the globe. I wouldn't live there now if you paid me.

*Toronto is, in my opinion, highly overrated compared to other large cities across the globe. I wouldn't live there now if you paid me.*
Toronto is still a decent place to live its just that its much worse than what it use to be. I'd say the 80s up until the early 2000s were the best time to live in this city and its been going downhill ever since.
Worst things about Toronto for me is:
      - certain demographics of people being allowed to run wild in committing crime and violence and not being held accountable for their actions for fear of being labeled 'racist'. Toronto is on its way to having a 7th straight year of 400+ shootings where before 2016 it never came close to that number.
      - the weather. The winters aren't the worst compared to other parts of the country, but Toronto really feels much more dead in the winter than in the summer when everyone is out and about. Move Toronto to California and the city would be a great place to live
      - the people running this city. Most of our politicians are utter garbage, especially John Tory. Too much resources, energy and time wasted on SJW/woke crap and catering to certain groups of people who hold far too much influence for their small numbers rather than serving the majority of the population
      - All the new development of never ending condos and big box stores is ripping out all the heart and soul of what made Toronto a great place to live. Downtown Toronto 30-40 years ago was the absolute best. Now its replaced with alot of generic crap because anyone who even wants to open a business downtown has to be rich to do so compared to all the mom and pop places that use to be around many years ago. Alot of the uniqueness of Toronto is gone now.
These are just a few things I miss about the Toronto I grew up in compared to now.

We are short by about 2 million residences pf any type province-wide. That is on par with California's shortages. It will take approximately 25 years to resolve this issue. The number of tradespeople and inflation on building materials are principal factors containing the construction market. But the fact we have a greenbelt will continue to ensure house prices remain extremely high as it constrains the amount of land available to build on. This combined with the provincial government's preference for single-family homes will keep prices high no matter how many houses we can build. I honestly wouldn't move to Toronto without a job that pays at least $CDN%0,000 a year.

I was born and raised in Toronto, now I’m 41….I love it, I don’t really have anything to compare it too but I was lucky to get a home before the market went up so the worst part for me is the winter weather, I wish we had more sunny weather. I’ve visited Miami before and the strip is beautiful but that’s about it, you need a car in Miami for sure. I’ve also visited New York which I also love but there were more than a few times I felt scared walking those streets and the subways. So for that reason I can’t see myself moving anywhere else, there’s cons everywhere you go
The very short summers we have here are really great though, lots of festivals and activities going on. And the parties we have here when Italy wins soccer or when Toronto raptors won is something you don’t really experience anywhere else, we definitely know how to celebrate

Yeah but in the USA you pay less taxes on pretty much everything, right!
Income tax in US is less than the 20% income tax in Toronto plus 5% for WSIB/Health benefits insurance. US sales tax is average 8%, whereas in Toronto its 13% sales tax on literally everything. Gas tax has sky rocketed because of Trudope and the corrupt Libtard party agendas and also the excuses for the Russian/Ukranian war funding. Gas prices in the US is far below the $1.70 per liter which is Toronto's rate. If people in the US had to pay $6.90 a gallon they would start a civil war. Torontonians are paying about 50% taxes on their yearly wages. Average wages (means the majority of the peoples' wages, and a family of 4 people for most) in Toronto and across Canada is $50,000 a year, which is $25 per hourly rate, whereas the average wages in the US are higher with less income tax, means you have more savings/disposible income. Also according to GTA(Greater Toronto Area) stats, most higher income residential areas have two employment incomes, which most people fathom the drudgery of maintaning two jobs.
So the apples don't compare. Get the facts.

Ex: Kensington market area never changed since the 70s, its locked in the hippie drug era. Pick a rich area or well off average area and whats near it? A run down slummy area.
