Great review, highlighted pro and cons of the monitor without overhyping/etc . I'm using this monitor now for over 1500h while not beeing a hardcore gamer. I mainly program in dark mode and low brightness (0-15%) and have nearly no static elements. The rest of the time I play Jedi Fallen Order and Survivor, Elden Ring, Horizon Zero Dawn, Forza, Anno 1800 or watching HDR Movies from BluRays (more on that later). Have not experienced any burn in so far. Interestingly, the color management does work very well with my ArchLinux distro, but obviously no HDR so far, while colors in Windows, even with the DCI-P3 color profile for this monitor installed and activated, are all oversaturated and greenish. So use HDR TrueBlack or HDR1000 with firmware M3B104 and get excellent colors with 10bit resolution. I have some tips (especially, because most reviews blame the monitor for the text clarity, but that's actually a software issue): For Windows Users: u can use the newest MacType from GitHub (snowie2000) and edit the default.ini and replace the "[GENERAL]" part to [GENERAL] Name=AW3423DWF PixelLayout=-18,-11,2,22,16,-11 I'm also using AntiAliasMode=2, HintingMode=1,GammaMode=1 and some weighting adjustments: NormalWeight=22, BoldWeigt=5. I didn't test Netflix, but it shall support HDR for windows users. Maybe the firetv stick let u watch HDR movies from Amazon. As mentioned, I use HDR Blurays with MakeMKV and VLC (u need an 4K BluRay Drive, for me the Verbatim works) and that looks amazing. Hopefully those who have this monitor or are willing to buy one find this information useful, the reddit thread is unfortunately private since a few days or weeks. So searching the internet gives nearly no results anymore...
So glad I found your comment! This would be pretty much my EXACT use case (except I use Manjaro, I could install Arch, but I'm lazy, don't hate me plz x'D). I've just bought a DELL S3422DWG and it's destroying my eyes, I believe I will return it straightaway... I have 3 questions if you don't mind: How is the OLED treating your eyes on dark backgrounds and low brightness? Do you experience less eyestrain or fatigue? Aren't you afraid of "burning your code editor and terminal" into the panel by programming on it? Do you need to keep a 16:9 monitor as a fallback (or second monitor) for some use cases?
@TechMetalPenguin first, I'm so sorry for my late reply. YT didn't notify about any comments I got except the heart comment... hmm the monitor will feel unusual and maybe uncomfortable the first days. I have migraine and had an episode cause of that, but if u have atleast a dimmed diffuse light and not a spotlight heading to the monitor, I think, this should be no problem. Atleast I had not experienced any issues since then. Only turning the dark mode on and lowering brightness +/ contrast will not directly result in less eyestrain, because of the infinite contrast of OLED. But with greyish brackground it does help a lot. One remark here: the grey will have a "film grain" look to it, but that's part of the oled technology as I have read somewhere ("rtings" maybe). If u have problems with flickering lights/LEDs, I strongly recommend turning FreeSync/Adaptive off (there is a guide in the archwiki (search for "AMDGPU"), maybe there's one for nvidia too) and wayland supports it directly in the "Display Settings" menu, cause the monitor will flicker caused by interference. So far I didn't need a fallback monitor. The only time I had no picture was caused by the monitor turned off when I started my computer. The DisplayPort protocol couldn't initialize it correctly as I turned it on later, but if urs is just in standby or if u turn the monitor on shortly before u turn on ur pc, the monitor should always work. If I need 16:9, I can just use the 2560x1440 resolution. In the case u ment a fallback monitor cause of health issues, there are some days with migraine were it could be useful, but I decided: If I am this sick, that I cannot use my monitor, I should stay away from monitors in general on this day and trink some more water, only read a books, go outside... in rare scenarios in which I must use it, turning the brightness and contrast down helped a lot and I'm happy the monitor can go this dark, while still things are visible. So far, I'm not afraid of burn in, cause my brightness rarely exceeds 15% (I'm mainly active in the night, the day is very loud and bright -> stressful for me). In my intuition about QD-OLED technology: less brightness -> less energy -> less burn in. And a cool remark, since I got it to work the last days: HDR Gaming, watching HDR movies (from bluray) and youtube HDR is possible on Linux with this monitor and amd gpu. I tested Jedi Survivor, Elden Ring, Horizon Zero Dawn. Forza will probably not work, cause it doesn't even start in Linux without HDR :/. But it's a bit tricky to get it working (the tutorial alone on HDR monitor support does not work). If u're interested, I'll try to write a short guide, how I set it up.
@@alexmathewelt7923 day is loud and stressful, autism? If so, same, maybe i should switch over to nocturnal.. and i like to use HDR blurays with makemkv as well.
They fixed the HDR 1000 Peak mode now with firmware update. Gaming in HDR is amazing. Upgraded from the AW3418DW and it was a huge leap. Best monitor ever I got it for $700 after a 300 Cashback. Only con it has some coil whine when darker scenes are displayed.
@@Xtenz01 coil whine, is audible sound directly produced by materials vibrating under the excitation of electromagnetic forces. Some examples of this noise include the mains hum, hum of transformers, the whine of some rotating electric machines, or the buzz of fluorescent lamps. It's not present on all panels it depends on your luck.
Amazing deals on it, between Dell's $200 off for black friday, $120 cashback from my credit card company, and another $100 off from Rakuten I got it for $580
I don't know if anyone mentioned in comment yet, but Dell released few days ago a firmware that fixes HDR 1000 peak mode issues. I would highly recommend update to the latest firmware to get HDR as it meant to be. Now the HDR quality on both dwf and dw is on par after the firmware. There is literarely no more reasons to buy the dw version over dwf, before the fix of the firmware dw version had a lot better HDR peak 1000 mode. Not anymore tho.
Yeah i blew my money on the AW3423DW and i returned it cause i said this is too much money and then re bought it. It will change youre gaming life and you will never ever be able to go back and im not joking its shocking how amazing it looks and makes games feel.
So true because I also bought the AW3423DW version and I'm slightly regretting it because thus AW3423DWF version is cheaper and can get firmware updates which the AW3423DW can't.
Best review in the world of this monitor. Made me decide to buy it as I own a high end pc, but have a cheap 1440p monitor. Thanks for going straight to the points too! For that you get an like + an subscription 🙌
You just reaffirmed every reason I bought this monitor the first day it became available from Dell. I knew I was going with an all AMD build this time. The DWF was a perfect fit. Yes, I am a GAMER first. Building PCs and playing with PCs as a Hobby is not why I do it. Gaming is the Goal and one must have the best bang for the buck. This DWF gets it done.
@@LearnWithTheBest IT was $999.00 for me at Dell. Dell was the only place to buy it on day one. Great monitor. You can set the screen to do its burn-in prevent measures and forget about it.
Just got this monitor on sale. Alot better than I imagined. The pixel refresh was annoying at the beginning but I set it to only go it when it's in stand by
I have been using this 3423DW monitor since December last year and use it only for FS2020. It is been a delight since I first installed it and the performance is simply breathtaking. I guess when running it hard with fast gaming it performs really well. The only comment and small criticism I do have is the toggle control for the settings that will never be my favourite way of adjustment. This gets in the way big time if you are using a Tobii 5 eye tracker as the mount has to be attached below the frame. All in all, absolutely delighted with it in every aspect, buying without seeing one in action is always a leap of faith, this is one I got right I am sure. Great review, glad I found it thanks . . .
what's your thoughts on it only having a 1800R curve? Others have a more aggressive curve. Especially regarding eye strain. Do you have any with with the alienware?
@@Hallo81398I have the DWF and sit about 3ft away from it, zero eyestrain. I'm really pleased with the monitor, I use it mostly in SD and it's an outstanding gaming/movie monitor
For whoever is waiting for a good deal on this monitor, i picked it up for $506 at Best Buy with the Excellect Open Box option. I pared thst with a 4 year warranty which kept it under $700 after tax. I moved from the 38" LG Ultragear UW which is double the price. The contrast, deep blacks and rich tone in general have justified the purchase while saving me $1000. Good luck. I HIGHLY recommend this monitor to anyone playing FPS and RPG games with a higher end build.
@@jeffn1215 I see this deal currently as well, and am contemplating getting it as well. I currently have a 34 inch 1440p 100hz moniter. This would be an insanse upgrade, wish it was 240 hz tho
800 at Best buy now. Picked one yesterday!! They're insane in person! And I got this for music production. Not gaming lol. I just couldn't find that shiny look on other monitors panels.
So… I watched this video twice! I ordered from Dell for $650 and the dual monitor arm you recommended for $99 from Amazon. I can’t say enough how happy I am with my set up a purchase! Gaming through a different level, with the same Lenovo legion Pro 7 RTx 4090 laptop.
I just pulled the trigger and purchased this on dells website for $1375 AUD between Monitor Unboxed's reivew and yours it helped me make the final decision to buy it. I've been using the Acer Predator X34GS for a year or so now but really wanted OLED as I game and watch a lot of movies n other media and the IPS glow and black light bleed has always been distracting to me on LCD's. Can't wait till i get this.
I just got this monitor earlier today from Best Buy with 4 year’s of Geek Squad Protection for $1,149.98 no tax in Oregon & so far I’m definitely not disappointed 😱😱😱👍🏿
@bledar RM the reviews that I've seen comparing them side by side showed it to be basically just as good as the DW after turning on Source Tone Mapping. Was what you saw comparing an older firmware version of the DWF with the DW?
@@JustinTechTips i had the latest dwf version hut everything was so blown out. For me the DW had the best hdr experience, and the second best is the samsung G8. I had constant tearing with that dwf no matter what fps i got. Ended up returning it.
@edcourv Awesome! Glad it was helpful for you! Please remember to use my link if you do get one! geni.us/Alienware-AW3423DWF It's the main reason I currently can do this full time!
@ nope. You’ll still see the benefits from it. The whole g module was an utter scam from NVIDIA anyway when it was possible to do via software without the hardware.
I hope they decide to make a 4K version soon. I’m planning on building a new 4K computer gaming/editing maybe next year or even 2 years, and I will be going from my current 1080p build (23 inch monitor) to a 4K build with a widescreen monitor.
only one 4k ultrawide exists to my knowledge, and they (dell) decided to call it a '5k2k' i really despise these 'k' naming schemes, they are so inconsistent. it's not a gaming monitor, it's an LCD with 75Hz for professionals. i doubt we will have worthwhile 4k ultrawide gaming screens for a long while, very (very) expensive too. Probably best to go with a a 16:9 4k monitor, or a monitor like this.
January Alienware come up with few new monitors is QLED 4K & others , But i am sure would be expensive the one I'm looking for TO GET is that 32" QD-OLED WITH 240 refresh rate is f*n awesome I WANNA KNOW whats the price on it damnit my eyes on that F**** ya! is Alienware AW3225QF
Apparently you could get the DW model to have updated firmware; however, if you have firmware M0B101, you would have to send it to Dell for them to update it. If you have M0B102, you don't.
Tempted to get the 32" 4K model after trying the Neo G8, once you go 4K hard to go back to 1440. But for now stick with the 57" Neo G9 and wait for the 2024/2025 OLED that I hope helps the text clarity and burn in issues a bit more. I think my ideal setup is 32+39+32 for a triple monitor setup with 21:9 in the middle with 2160 vertical resolution and 4K PPI.
@8:52 You're saying that "the newer DWF model model has the ability to upgrade the firmware, the DWF does not." So... which one are are you talking about here?
Even if the G8 would have better colors. I dont think anyone could notice because it would be just a little bit. These are all the same panels from samsung of course.
I currently have samsung g95sc and I have to return this again (second time) because this has some screen issues. I don't know what is propability of getting "broken" monitor. I am doubting samsung after this back to back issues.
Would this also be a good recommendation for content creation ... graphics or video? I love to purchase an Apple Studio display, but most of my work is done on a PC. So looking for a good high quality comparable Studio display, but for a PC.
Really nice review! I picked one of these up today at my local BestBuy for $650. The OOTB video settings are oversaturated, but easy to fix with a few menu adjustments. I will need to find a shallower stand as this one sticks out a whopping 12" from the wall and is really in my face. Other than that I just LOVE it already. Do you believe in love at first sight? 😅
I have one question, I have NVIDIA Gpu and I'm thinking about buy this monitor with free sync which one is cheaper, there's any relevance or difference about the g sync? Or is waste of money?
If you enable Gsync perhaps it good to have but all my years using Nvidia GPUs (3080Ti/4090) I never, enable Gsync so it was an easy choice for the DWF. The other factors are firmware update capability (heard its resolved on the DW now) and the fact that I prefer a black monitor. The PinP feature was the icing on the cake.
Did I catch this right that this is glossy panel? Are there any 4k OLED not glossy panels? I really dont like the reflections when working (and watching movies too).
@Tucks034 Thank you Tucks! I personally prefer this one over 4k. I like the wide format and don't think the jump from this resolution to 4k is worth the decreased fps
thanks man. what monitor would you recommend that's top of line like this, perhaps even curved, but for someone with static apps running for years? thx in advance! Happy new year.
If price wasn’t an issue what monitor would you recommend this or the XENEON FLEX 45WQHD? I would mainly use for gaming and movies I have a top tier computer with a Asus rog 4090. It’s time for a monitor upgrade right now I have a older Alienware untrawide lcd so this one caught my eye as I love the one I have now so having it in oled would be awesome Everything about the XENEON FLEX 45WQHD seems top tier but I was told there’s no height adjustment which would be a bit of a deal breaker for me. Anyways let me know.
hey @retrolivegaming9600 yes that one is definitely my favorite. Two things to take note on. The Xeneon Flex since it is so big will have pixels large enough to notice them if you plan to view your screen closer than 2 feet. Honestly though it's so big that it feels weird to sit that close. Second thing like you said is the lack of adjustability (height adjustment and no VESA mounting) bestbuy.7tiv.net/anNOxj My second favorite is the Alienware OLED in this video. bestbuy.7tiv.net/DKMxaq The picture is slightly better than the Xeneon Flex. If you do end up getting either of these today (or even a different monitor) please remember to use my links as purchases made through them give me a small commission at no cost to you and it helps the channel grow and get better!
Do you need a 100x100 vesa adapter to mount it ? I have the Ergotron HX Wall adapter that I want to attach it to but not sure if I also need the adapter or if it will slot right in
Hey, great review. I just sent back my XENEON 27QHDOLED because of the flickering in brightness, it was very annoying and very troublesome for my eyes. Does this OLED panel have the same flickering? thanks in advance.
Should I get the Alienware AW2723DF. I want a 4K monitor with very low input lag with at least 120Hz. I wish I can get this one but my budget is around $600😢
Could you explain a bit more about the need or no need for the G-sync module? I've only been into gaming for a few years and I learned the hard way that once you go for an Nvidia GPU you do need a monitor which at least is G-sync compatible.. but is this no longer the case?
From all I've seen. This one is still G-Sync compatible but they dropped the official G-Sync branding as it costs them money. He also says here that there is no issues with NVIDIA cards. I just ordered my new rig and this monitor today. Will try and update when everything is up and running.
So would you recommend this over the lg 34" superwide that is normal oled, matte screen, 240hz and the curve is much more aggressive. I just don't want to feel like I'm missing out on the higher refresh rate. I have a 4080 super So cod and fortnite could absolutely reach 240fps. Things I like more about the alienware: more subtle curve, better colors and more brightness.
I have this monitor but it stands at an angle, how do i fix this issue ? And how do i take off the panel that keeps the wires tidy so i can add more wires?
so on the DWF can you have G-Sync and HDR on at the same time...ik thats why the DW is 300$ more because it has G-Sync Ultimate which allows HDR and G-Sync to be enabled at the same time

Noted, just in case I purchase this monitor
So glad I found your comment! This would be pretty much my EXACT use case (except I use Manjaro, I could install Arch, but I'm lazy, don't hate me plz x'D).
I've just bought a DELL S3422DWG and it's destroying my eyes, I believe I will return it straightaway...
I have 3 questions if you don't mind:
How is the OLED treating your eyes on dark backgrounds and low brightness? Do you experience less eyestrain or fatigue?
Aren't you afraid of "burning your code editor and terminal" into the panel by programming on it?
Do you need to keep a 16:9 monitor as a fallback (or second monitor) for some use cases?
❤
Coil whine? (Not english had trouble understanding the meaning ) can you explain ?
@@Xtenz01 coil whine, is audible sound directly produced by materials vibrating under the excitation of electromagnetic forces. Some examples of this noise include the mains hum, hum of transformers, the whine of some rotating electric machines, or the buzz of fluorescent lamps.
It's not present on all panels it depends on your luck.
Amazing deals on it, between Dell's $200 off for black friday, $120 cashback from my credit card company, and another $100 off from Rakuten I got it for $580
So HDR will work fine with a nvidia GPU?
@@nflikt yeah, no issues with my 4090
I don't know if anyone mentioned in comment yet, but Dell released few days ago a firmware that fixes HDR 1000 peak mode issues.
Just updated and it works a treat.
I'll try it
What about gsync??
@@icephoenix3565 it's always worked with gsync
What about 10-bit color? DWF only works at 100 Hz and DW at 144 Hz
Thanks for going straight to the points too!

hows it been? looking to buy one for black friday

How much was it on release day? It's at 1k now and I'm thinking about waiting for black friday

How do u like it now, I might pick one up at Best buy
Just purchased for $550 on Dell's website.
Same i bought mines for music production 😂😂😂😂

@Aperson because you're awesome and want smaller TH-cam channels to succeed :)
@@JustinTechTips the DW model is way better than the dwf especially if you compare them side by side.
@@JustinTechTips I watched the I7400, a7300, and I8100 reviews 12 times before using the link because I was indecisive.
Do you need speakers? Does it come with sound?
That hexagon back wall is really cool. Did you make that yourself?
The DWF is on sale for $799 at Best Buy right now. I just ordered one on the website.

Great video, would an RTX 3060 be enough for this monitor? Mainly for iracing
As of right now (6/11/23), Dell raised the price of the DWF back to $1099.99, which is just $100 less than the DW at $1199.99.

How is it on ps5??
the key difference between the DW and DWF is they dropped the g sync module for the DWF hence the cheaper price. Its till g sync compatible though.
What does it mean? Will I lose something important without g sync having an nvidia gpu?
@ nope. You’ll still see the benefits from it. The whole g module was an utter scam from NVIDIA anyway when it was possible to do via software without the hardware.
what preset mode do you run this monitor? Standard? Creator?
A 1600p version of it would be nice. They only sell the normal led, not oled in 38inch
January Alienware come up with few new monitors is QLED 4K & others , But i am sure would be expensive
the one I'm looking for TO GET is that 32" QD-OLED WITH 240 refresh rate is f*n awesome I WANNA KNOW whats the price on it damnit my eyes on that F**** ya! is Alienware AW3225QF
You'll regret getting 4k. Even the rtx 4090 struggles to go past 100fps. What's the point of a 4k 240hz monitor when gpu can't even fully utilize it?
4K seems pointless to me at this size. 1440p is the sweet spot imo.
Apparently you could get the DW model to have updated firmware; however, if you have firmware M0B101, you would have to send it to Dell for them to update it. If you have M0B102, you don't.
Is this monitor ok with regular workflow stuff? Stock trading? Content creation?
Why it’s so big price difference and which is better? Amd freesync premium pro - 1300 cad $ and nvidia g-sync ultimate - 1650 cad$
because nVidia charges them to use the G-sync module. there is NO reason to buy the DW, buy the DWF instead
This is such well thought out review and straight to the important points. Amazing video and content! Thank you.
@8:52 You're saying that "the newer DWF model model has the ability to upgrade the firmware, the DWF does not." So... which one are are you talking about here?
Can this monitor be used for a PS5? Sorry, for my ignorance on this question. 😅
Can i connect my iPad Pro to the monitor? I don’t see usb-c port
Which monitor you do you recommend for streaming?
What would you pick for an Editing Monitor, Photos and Video than watching youtubes and videos and also 10% of the time for Gaming?
Only 1 HDMI port is crazy. How can I connect my Xbox and PS5 -_-
I agree I am trying to find out what adapter to buy or hook one of the consoles to tv.
If I am an investor with lots of charts open and constantly going back and forth between tabs and applications, do I have to worry about burn?
Question is it worth getting if you have a LGC2 42 INCH ?
I’ve had one of these for around six months. It’s amazing. I use an LG 48” 4K Oled monitor as well.
only problem for me... with monitor arm you can use??? because there is no adapter.
I think a fairer comparison would be towards the Samsung Odyssey g8 OLED. People say that one has better colors too
Even if the G8 would have better colors.
It is king I’ve been using it since 6 months now. The best monitor I have ever had so far..
Ive owned a AW3418DW for many years and it's been an incredible monitor! Only upgrade would be the jump from IPS to OLED and im really considering..
Would this also be a good recommendation for content creation ... graphics or video? I love to purchase an Apple Studio display, but most of my work is done on a PC. So looking for a good high quality comparable Studio display, but for a PC.
OLED, as is stands, is not the best type of display technology for your application
Why not hdmi 2.1?
at aprox 8:58 you stated that the DWF has the ability to upgrade the firmware. Then at 8:59 you state that the DWF does not. Which is?
@richardb7093 sorry, the DW does not. The DWF is the one with the ability to upgrade the firmware.
I heard about coil whine. Is this true? Even with the newer model ?
4:58 Does anyone notice the dots and lines all over the screen? What is it?
That’s just something that happens sometimes when a camera records a screen up close. You don’t see that in real life
@@JustinTechTips Ah! I see. I thought it is kind of scan lines. Good to know that it isn’t visible in real life.
Will I get a black bar on either sides with PS5?

How do you mount this monitor to a VESA compatible mount arm? says the VESA adapter is not needed.
Would I be better off getting this monitor for my Alienware R16 i9, RTX4090 or a 4K monitor? Awesome videos, no stone left unturned 👌🏼
@Tucks034 Thank you Tucks! I personally prefer this one over 4k. I like the wide format and don't think the jump from this resolution to 4k is worth the decreased fps

Everything about the XENEON FLEX 45WQHD seems top tier but I was told there’s no height adjustment which would be a bit of a deal breaker for me.
