Great video !! Yep, many people don't realize the Criticality of the importance of maintaining proper system voltage throughout the entire electrical system. Also, sometimes your starter may crank but system voltage may drop below 8.5 Volts and that impacts the operation of Critical Engine sensors, and the result being No Start but the engine cranks ! In addition, VRS sensors are very much impacted when using an AC powered Jump Starter pack, many times the VRS Sensors wont operate correctly and car will not start, you have to use a portable Jump Start Pack and car starts right up. This happened to me, I have 200 Amp electric Jump starter, I tried several times and no start , but when I used the DC jump pack - it started right up !!! Thanks again great video !
Great diagnosis and video. This shows the importance of having the right tools and KNOWING how to use them. Training is going to be a major factor for continued success in being a good tech. Cars are just going to keep getting harder and harder to work on. Keep fighting the good fight...
Good diagnosis. It's always a tough one when somebody else had their grubby hands on it before. Customer says put the scanner on it and tell you what's wrong. Basically it gives you direction for a diagnosis. Stay safe. 🇨🇦

The other thing to learn from this video, is ALWAYS check the oil in your customers car before you start it! Shame on that dealer tech for not doing that. I can't tell you how many times they've been dropped off to me with oil that doesn't even register on the dipstick. I don't want that engine blowing up on my watch!
My cousin's neighbor took her Malibu to the Chevy dealer that she bought the car from for an oil change. She drove it home afterwards & the next day it wouldn't crank over so she asked my cousin to give her a jump. Turns out the oil tech neglected to fill it with oil. She ended up having to sue the dealer because they were refusing to replace her motor.
@@gailtaylor1636 Doesn't matter if the tech was pulled off or not, the responsibility is still on them. Do you work at a shop who's tech's need their hands held through a simple oil change? If so I wouldn't want my vehicle serviced there.
To me, this seems like a really bad dealer experience where they don't have skilled techs, and they add more problems instead of fixing them. And what dealer doesn't have a battery tester? Great job on the multiple diagnosis, and you saved the customer a ton of money
Great video. I was in an ATG class with Corey the other night. Smart guy. Wish I had introduced myself but I was exhausted and wanted to go home but hopefully our paths cross again.

What??? You mean that I just couldn't plug in a "Fixed" and use my phone a scan tool to know what was wrong! Sorry, I know from 46 years in the business that you had a great diagnosis there. I get so sick and tired of the stupid ad that pops up for that Fixed. That thing probably cost the average consumer that buys one more than all the DIYers that complain about paying for diagnosis and then throwing $1500.00 in parts at it then coming to you and complaining about doing a proper diagnosis. Great Job, I enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! I hate those adds as well...It's nothing short of a scam to make people think they can diagnose these things with no training and a 50 dollar code reader.
Yes sir, having a good battery these days is very important. Your approach to issues has been consistent and easy to understand Joe. Most of this stuff is over my head but I still enjoy learning.
It's sad to think that a dealership with "certified mechanics" had no idea how to fix the car Joe on the other Joe used his brain I've learned that from personal experience whit a car is always replace the battery if you have any electrical or check for green crustys on the red and black wire's
30 years in heavy-duty diesel trucks and equipment anytime i have check light or fault code issue the first thing I do is load check all the batteries and make sure they're all charged before I start cause even as little as 2 volts can cause you to start chasing ghosts like crazy
My wife 2013 Buick engine light came on. I was driving it and stopped at Auto- Zone and did the scan. Brought to my shop and had that sitting on passenger seat. He called me and said it needed other stuff. I said do your diagnosis . He repaired it. When I picked it up he told me people bring cars in with that code from parts stores and expect that the only thing it needs.I didn’t give him that paper from the parts store next time I’ll throw it out.

It's more about seeing what a commonalities are or that how I look at it basically I'm looking see what the modules are all griping about is it all the same thing generally they tell on each other or at least what making them unhappy
Great video Joe: again, knowing the system having the tools and being able to think in a logical manner are the keys to success. DIYers do need to know when we are out of our league. No shame in admitting that something is just plain out of your wheelhouse. thanks again for an extremely educational video. always great to watch you actually go through the troubleshooting process live but we know filming adds an incredible amount of time to any job.
Sound like them false codes and the buss plug in the dash wasn't seated or connected correctly from the manufacturer. I had the same issues with my Dart. My mechanic took the dash apart and traced wires. Then he seen the main power plug to the firewall wasn't connected all the way. I replaced a bunch of sensors and replaced the battery prior. My modules was reading all false codes cause the plug wasn't plugged in all the way.
I had a battery issue recently that resulted from an alternator getting wet. After the alternator got wet, it resulted in a solid 4 ohm short that caused the battery to fry. I charged up the battery overnight and it took a charge but not a complete charge so ended up with a new battery and an alternator. Another time, I had an charging problem on another vehicle (I suspected what it was but could not prove it) so took it to the dealer. The dealer wanted to replace the entire wiring harness in the engine compartment but decided not to do that and took it to an auto electric shop. They fixed the problem in less than an hour and only charged me $20! Turned out to be a bad accessory connector at the battery positive terminal!
I have a problem child... 06 subaru with a p2138 pedal assembly fault... Every time I look at it it works values are good and it never fails when I have it... I even drove it for 2 weeks.... Zero issue. Client picks it up 25-30 min later call saying it's in limp mode... No one else wants to look at it and I hate getting beat on a problem. I use a very similar approach to yours I find it to be pretty through. Cool case study.
Any TSB's on this? Also, maybe take the customer and let him drive it with you riding shotgun. Driver habit may have something to do with the fault showing itself. just an idea.
I chased a rabbit because my Tech 2 pcmis card made for a Saturn Astra would kill my candi module for the scanner. The j-box I was using was crap. Put my oscilloscope on it and I could see data communications even though my tools said there wasn't. Drug it up to PHAD and have Ivan look at it and his Bosch jbox got it talking. SO like you said you need to have the right tool.
Great talk about this stuff, Thanks .If it's under warr. the dealer will be more honest and just fix it right where as a small shop could show you all those codes and charge a bunch. I'm a machinist with 3 jeeps. I bought a nice snap-on scanner/lab scope(up to 2009 soft) but ya still have to know what your looking at. Lots of codes on my 2000 XJ. I learned about every wire on the jeep.turned out to be a broken distributor drive metal part into oil pump still spinning but not on time. i kept looking at jeep saying this thing should be running right. Non electrical problem.I just happened to see the distributor moving around a bit. OMG ! fixed. My 2012 Grand Cherokee had a module go out. the entire car was acting up,Trans,Engine, gauges, power steering, dash lights, no start/start,limp mode. I could not have fixed that one .Warr saved $2000 + from dealer. paid $212.00. Yes, Battery was ok under the front seat WTF? As soon as I get my 91 MJ legal I'll be driving it to work. I will always own an XJ.
I hate to tell you this, but even under warranty, this truck was made a disaster BY the dealer. Misconception that all dealer guys know what they are doing. I have seen more than my share who are terrible and could care less about fixing anything. They work flat rate and all that matter is clocking hours.
Great catch on all those problems! I own a 2020 TH. At 10.5v and a dead cell it seems like the engine start wouldn't be nice and crisp. Original battery? If so, five years is getting up there.
I love how you worked through the codes and grouped them to make conclusions. I have had my 2015 Jeep Cherokee 4s4 at the dealer over 20 times and I am on my 4th battery. Since the battery can cause so many other problems I have one question: What could cause a car to burn out 3 batteries in 6.5 years and only 72k miles?
Have a friend scanned his truck. had oil sender and trans temp sensor codes. he looks at me and ask what parts do I need? I tried to explain to him, that I wasn't sure until further diagnosis it. Long story short the oil sensor was leaking oil. Thanks for video, learned something new
4 ปีที่แล้ว
was that a two for 1 dealio where it was leaking oil into the other sensor/connector too?
ANOTHER good video, both for would be mechanics and customers that believe every car repair shop is out to screw them.I used to repair 40 years ago ,it was easier then ,you looked at parts,if it had a crack or a big burn mark. you replace that and moved on.NOW you need a scan tool,to see INSIDE THE PART!!! It's like going to the doctor and getting an MRI >>>BEFORE they operate.Instead of cutting you open to find your just constipated and needed ELAX>EDUCATION that's the key,A list of things to check, like GAS OIL
Hello Joe after speaking to many dealerships in the past I know they don't replace engine with new one. Usually used because dealer insurance won't pay for new one.
Certainly a challenge to take in a vehicle that's been at the stealer for repairs and they've failed. Make sure the customer gives the dealership your business card. 😉
@@gailtaylor1636 That is true but another aspect is the practice of letting go seasoned veterans to hire lower wage, inexperienced techs...You see it in industries across the board.
I work at a nissan dealership, and see this ever day!!! A customer will have a dead battery, then call someone like AAA to replace the battery for free. Then bring it to me and wonder why all the electronics are all wacked out. I hook up a factory scanner, and get two pages of low voltage and communication problems. People do not understand a car can have 10-15 computerized systems- or sometimes more!!!! PEOPLE DO YOURSELF A FAVOR and TAKE IT TO SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING!!!!! YOU WILL SAVE MONEY IN THE LONG RUN !!!!!!
Was wondering that myself. As much as I like Joe's videos, sometimes he gets sidetracked and can jump around so you are never quite sure what the outcome is. Sometimes he will start the car to prove it's fixed, but I really don't need that, since I'm sure we all believe you. But I would like to know in a clearer fashion, maybe as a summary, that A caused B,C,D and X fixed it.
Oh man!...You are talking electronics and electricity. The first myth people need to understand is that it's cold, hard physics. There's no 'magic'...there's nothing that is actually random. I've found that maybe 80%+ of inoperable circuits with no visible damage (on or off a board) are due to some power issue, whether that be the source or the delivery path. On pc boards I've many times seen a dc supply look like a saw, or sick sine wave - just because of a solder joint!!! Great stuff...
My guess is that it's one problem like a blown fuse or chafed wire and a case of 1 models turning on another. Why did they unplug it and and Duc the wire up

A man's got to know his limitations.

I have seen more than my share who are terrible and could care less about fixing anything. They work flat rate and all that matter is clocking hours.
I love when customers come in my shop and say why can’t you just plug in your fancy tool and it will tell you what’s wrong . 🤣😂🤣🤔
They watch too much scotty bullshitter
Can't stand Scotty myself either.....just my own opinion....
Is the calibration you describe also known as a “Proxi alignment”?
But it starts the vehicle. Lol
Thanks for videos
Have a friend scanned his truck. had oil sender and trans temp sensor codes. he looks at me and ask what parts do I need? I tried to explain to him, that I wasn't sure until further diagnosis it. Long story short the oil sensor was leaking oil.
Thanks for video, learned something new
was that a two for 1 dealio where it was leaking oil into the other sensor/connector too?
@ it was the screen under the sender partly plugged
Customer states "I own a Jeep"
Service writer writes down customer complaint.
Yes sir, it is far more difficult today than it was. But being able to nail them down is what separates the techs these days.
What's my move? I stop short.
Hello Joe after speaking to many dealerships in the past I know they don't replace engine with new one. Usually used because dealer insurance won't pay for new one.
100% man.
Well they would replace with "similar", so an engine with a similar amount of miles on it.
I have had 70 codes in a bmw clear codes see what comes back and go from there
Yep, especially low voltage issue causing that stuff.
So true Joe I really enjoy your videos.your speaking truth about repairing vehicles.thanks for sharing this.
Thanks 👍
Certainly a challenge to take in a vehicle that's been at the stealer for repairs and they've failed. Make sure the customer gives the dealership your business card. 😉
@@gailtaylor1636 That is true but another aspect is the practice of letting go seasoned veterans to hire lower wage, inexperienced techs...You see it in industries across the board.
make sure the dealer gets Joe's bill
Thanks Joe
you the man Joe , great info.
Nice find and fix! 😄👍
Thanks 👍
Thank you, great info!!!
You are so welcome!
Hey Joe! Any chance of you opening up shops in someplace other than Jersey?
I wish
I can honestly say that I get frustrated the most but learn the most when working on my Dodge/Chrysler.
Excellent...Just I didn't understand. Was finally every problem resolved? No active codes remained?
Yes, I should have showed the after report I guess...I was tired as hell filing this one.. Sorry about that.
Quick question bud, What thermal camera do you use? Brand, model if you can Please share! Thank you!
My Catphone has a Flir built into it and I also have an older stand alone model Flir that a good buddy gave me.
We need more videos of your expertise brother, it’s been a while
I’m about to quit the industry lol
I have been sick for three years brother. I make diagnostic tools at home now and sell them.

@@JoesAutoElectric I saw a TH-cam short of your psw simulator where can I buy it??

I fucking love mechanics like you!
Nice !
The truck most likely would of been junk because no one could've figured out how to fix all those codes.
Why did they unplug it and and Duc the wire up
Was not blown fuse or wiring chafed.
