  • There are so many different forces in our brains, our bodies, and our culture as a whole that move us toward the experience of scarcity-that something is missing, that we don’t have enough, and that we never will have enough. The feeling of scarcity both feels bad in itself, and is also the creator and amplifier of so many other challenges we face.
On today’s episode of Being Well, Dr. Rick Hanson and I talk about what a scarcity and an abundance mindset is, what some sources of scarcity are, and how we can move to an authentic experience of abundance.
    Key Topics:
    0:00 Introduction
    2:35 Defining scarcity and abundance
6:45 Why are we biologically predisposed towards scarcity?
17:05 When to relax and expand
20:45 Scarcity at the cultural level
25:55 Critique of promoting an “abundance mindset” and a practical definition
30:25 Orienting to a sense of abundance
38:00 Motivating with punishment vs reward
39:55 Abundance in objectively difficult times
47:25 Specific ways to shift from scarcity to abundance
59:00 A sense of wonder and groundedness

"objective scarcity in their life. Scarcity of social status " ... Etc. Glad you brought this up. Some people are targeted and have huge hurdles to overcome in this way - from narcissistic people who don't have the resources to deal with conflict in a healthy way.

45:12 Honestly THANK YOU so much for addressing this point. It almost brings tears to my eyes. Because I've been in this situation for at least 7 years trying to make this "manifestation" BS work, with minimal and inconsistent results. THANK YOU for giving me permission to trust myself again. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! From the BOTTOM of my heart!

Thanks so much. I Loved this content. Forest’s description of his previous take on the “Abundance” mindset and how it made him feel ,resonated with me! (Prosperity gospel, manifesting abundance etc.) It was a complete turn off for me too.. Your description made me laugh. I have a much better understanding of it now. Thanks to both of you for this wonderful content. I’m so glad that I came across your podcast. It’s been very helpful to me.

I kind of wish the scarcity mindset was called “poverty mindset” instead. I don’t know why exactly. Maybe scarcity doesn’t seem as bad as poverty.
