Loyal to self really annoys others. If your looking out for you, they may have to do their job. You may ask questions above their intelligence and then they get angry and emotional. Then there is the "we" think this or that.

Diane, thank you for your comment! I've written a fair amount about "getting on your own side," including in the first practice in my Just One Thing book and in the first chapter of Resilient, which I wrote with Forrest Hanson. I've also written about self-compassion in those two books, plus Kristen Neff, Chris Germer, and Steve Hickman have their own books about self-compassion; I can heartily recommend their program: Mindful Self-Compassion.

You mention here the importance of establishing truth between two people in that plaintiff and defendent situation, but what if the big hurdle is two people cannot get past that step, it just devolves into argument and non compromise and separation until someone, usually only always the same person gives in? And so no values can be established or commited to going forward by both, it is just ok for a while until the next repeat of that cycle ,even if one is very willing to get to that values based approach going forward ?

You mentioned when people are rude, mean, etc. What about when people are REALLY needy, insecure, immature? They say they are happy when we are happy and they are just being helpful and nice. Those are the people that are the most annoying and most difficult.
