ROV Hercules Explores Below the Surface of Brine Pool | Nautilus Live

  • Brine pools are underwater lakes on the ocean floor formed by dense salty brine which refuses to mix with the seawater above. In this video, ROV Hercules takes a dip in one such pool, pushing hard with its thrusters against the especially high buoyancy of the pool to bring its cameras below the surface.
    E/V Nautilus is exploring the ocean studying biology, geology, archeology, and more. Watch www.nautiluslive.org for live video from the ocean floor. For live dive updates follow along on social media at / nautiluslive and / evnautilus on Twitter. For more photos from our dives, check out our Instagram @nautiluslive.

What makes that water so toxic to other marine organisms? What’s at the bottom of the pool? Is there other life living in the pool wither it be micro or normal what type of bacteria grows on the side? So many questions yet no one has talked about this publicly and the one who did sadly isn’t here with us my condolences but this is a really fascinating topic and I can’t find answers lol

    One major idea involves harnessing the salinity of brine pools to use as a power source. This would be done using an osmotic engine which draws the high salinity top water through the engine and pushes it down due to osmotic pressure. This would cause the brackish stream (which is less dense and has a lighter salinity) to be propelled away from the engine via buoyancy. The energy created by this exchange can be harnessed using a turbine to create a power output.

    • @DanielVerberne
      @DanielVerberne 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blue Jay Aves, that's a fascinating concept! Almost every years for the last few years I've been learning of genuinely new and innovative potential ways to generate power! That's the wonderful aspect of a global challenge like climate change - it's not going to be resolved by just one thing, but by dozens of changes all mutually-supporting the transition away from fossil-fuels. The fact that so many clever people are thinking of new ways of harvesting energy; it's fascinating man. The most recent innovation I'd heard of prior to your 'salinity brine osmotic engine' is a 'gravity battery', which consists of a tower-like structure equipped with a series of cranes at the top. The cranes can lift up heavy blocks from the ground nearby and place them on the tower structure at a height, creating what I think its the gravitational potential energy, which can later be .... 'used' by reversing the process. Anyway it's related and similar to the concept around Pumped Hydro.

      “A brine pool is a large area of brine on the ocean basin. These pools are bodies of water that have a salinity three to eight times greater than the surrounding ocean. For deep-sea brine pools, the source of the salt is the dissolution of large salt deposits through salt tectonics. The brine often contains high concentrations of methane, providing energy to chemosynthetic animals that live near the pool. These creatures are often extremophiles.[1][2] Brine pools are also known to exist on the Antarctic Shelf where the source of brine is salt excluded during formation of sea ice. Deep-sea and Antarctic brine pools can be toxic to marine animals.”
