  • German submarine U-455 was a Type VIIC U-boat built for the Nazi German Kriegsmarine for service during World War II. She was laid down on 3 September 1940, launched on 21 June 1941 and commissioned on 21 August 1941 with Kapitänleutnant Hans-Henrich Giessler in command of a crew of 51.
Her service began with the 5th U-boat Flotilla, a training outfit. She was transferred to the 7th flotilla for operations at the beginning of 1942 and again to the 29th flotilla in March 1944.
She carried out ten patrols and was a member of six wolfpacks; she sank three ships for a total of 17,685 GRT.
She was lost, in the Ligurian Sea (north of Corsica), on 6 April 1944. Her wreck was discovered in 2005, by Lorenzo Del Veneziano of Centro Sub Tigullio.

The naval dead on all sides were heroes. They fought with bravery not necessarily for the politics.
They fought for their country and their homes.

U-455 was sunk by a German mine in the German barrage Fuss-Ball-Klub, when returning from a patrol off Algiers. 51 dead, all hands lost.

With the conning tower hatch open like that makes me wonder if there were any survivors 🤞🇩🇪🙏

@Richard Tricker Undoubtedly there were survivors to leave an open hatch.
One hell of a way to die.
U455 had her stern blown off by a mine while at periscope depth. The last 33 odd feet was blown off, leaving the sub to sink stern first into the sea bed. I hope you can get the gist from the video that the wreck is vertical, having gone into the sea bed like a dart, stern first, leaving her bow pointing up to the sky.
Think about that for a moment.
It means the interior of the sub is now a vertical steel tube about 150 feet long, separated only by three internal bulk heads. It would be like looking down an elevator shaft. Anything that wasn't secured is going to tumble down, and that means torpedo's that weren't secured, furniture, tools and of course crew will all tumble down on top of each other.
Then if the the batteries electrolyte makes contact with the sea water, Clorine gas will be created burning your lungs and eyes out. All this will be going on I presume in total darkness as the lights have gone out, water is rushing in and the boat is sinking by the stern. What a way to go.
For those that made it out of the hatch they've got I presume one breath of air which they must exhale all the way to the surface, and 390 feet of water above them to the surface and their next breath.
Having made that, its now a 2 mile swim to the nearest shore.
There were no known survivors from this boat.

@@alexwild4350 Thanks for sharing that with us! I always think about stuff like that. Even if we were on the other side of the war, they were still doing the job they were told to do. Much respect for them, once former enemies, now just people!

Somebody else know if when they find this submarine, still had body in side? And what was the reason for the shipwreck?

    • @b1ac4yt69
      @b1ac4yt69 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

A documentary made about it concluded the boat ran into a german mine field when coming into port, hit a mine, and its rear half of about 30 feet got blown off and it sunk

If you go to U-boat.net, there is a lot of good information on this and many other U-Boats. This one hit a mine -- likely a German mine -- and sunk with 51 sailors. So, yes, there are probably human remains inside.

Love the way these machines, made for killing and destroying, turn into oases of life as they are consumed. Fast forward a 100 years or so and these will all be gone, mostly. Just rusty stains on the ocean floor and a few scraps of ceramic and glass.

For the record this boat was not “lost”, it was actually sunk by a German mine. Karma.
