Written, narrated and edited by me, Leo Richards. This channel (Natural World Facts) is my passion project dedicated to exploring the wonders of the natural world and telling stories that inspire! This film is unusual in that it is my first piece of contract work, commissioned by Schmidt Ocean Institute, who have kindly given me permission to post it here on TH-cam - so the style might seem a little different to usual, but I had a blast making it. The film premiered at the Royal Institution in London. See the film's outro for full credits. Thank you to everyone at SOI who recorded the footage, gave interviews, piloted the ROV, kept the ship running, and managed a boat-load (literally) of media and footage to make this film possible!
Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI) is a non-profit oceanographic research foundation that has been pioneering deep-sea research and discovery since 2009, on board their old vessel RV Falkor and their new RV Falkor (too). Their remotely operated vehicle (ROV) SuBastian is equipped with a suite of sensors and a 4K camera that has illuminated the depths and live-streamed dives around the world. i wholeheartedly believe that you’ll be noticed & picked up by major documentary channels if you keep this up, although your voice is ofc different the whole vibe of the way you talk and narrate these videos is so much like david attenborough i truly can’t see how they wouldn’t try to recruit you. this video is insanely good
You’ve no idea how happy this comment made me! Thank you, so so so much. Since I was tiny, watching Attenborough on tv, my dream has been to do what he does and work on professional docos. To this day my dream job is to work on wildlife films for the BBC or Netflix, though I’ve no idea how to get there. Anyway - this made my day. 🥰

@@NaturalWorldFactsHow to get there? Ask. Connect. Send physical letters to institutes and people in positions that you want to hold and ask them for advice. Sometimes you can say that you know the person you're talking to isn't who you need to talk to to find out what you want to know, but you're hoping they might know someone that you can talk to through them to get to what you want to know and where you want to be.
Maybe you can't talk to Attenborough but can you talk to Attenborough's foundation's secretary?
You have a great advantage in that you already have a portfolio of fine work that you've done. An educational channel approaching a million subscribers is amazing! Find out how presenters find agents and get one. Then go to every audition you can.
I got my first tech writer job when I was in college because I went to a party and schmoozed up my future boss explaining the kind of work I was doing in the kind of work I was looking to do. I got a job in my desired field and he got a cheap but talented to update his manuals. From there I worked at Adobe and intel.
People are doing what you want to do. All you have to do is get counseled by those people or the people who know those people.
I hope they don't change anything, they'll ruin it.

I guess you could start a production company. I'm not sure what you'd need, but you seem well on your way. Please don't go to mainstream. They come across fake and manipulative. @@NaturalWorldFacts I was there, with my partner! 😄 (we both work in deep-sea palaeontology, she really liked the documentary as well!) We'd come from Cambridge, so not too far from London. We both thought it was a beautifully made doc, some of the deep-sea communities reminding us of fossil ecosystems we study! And you handled the audience questions really well😄 Again, really sorry I couldn't stick around to chat, but I'm sure we'll be able to meet up at some point!
This video (and channel) is utterly a triumph. The section covering the subterranean ecosystem is one of the most incredible things I've seen on TH-cam. Hats off to you, Leo.
Thank you so so much!!! Credit also to the AMAZING scientists who discovered the ecosystem. The fact it was found essentially by chance just blows me away - to my memory, they were conducting a separate experiment investigating larval dispersal which wasn’t working so well. They then decided on a whim to flip the rocks, and THAT’S when they discovered it. A whole new ecosystem, from flipping a rock. It took me back to my childhood, flipping logs and finding a hidden world of detritivores and amphibians nestled away in their own domain of deadwood. It’s the power of curiosity in its purest form!
You are a talented documentarian. I have been watching since back when you had only a few videos, and it has been great to see your growth. Science communicators like you do incredibly valuable work.
I suffer ptsd symptoms and it was very rough a few years back. Often, the calm narration in your videos was helpful to me. Now, i enjoy your work for the information. Thanks for these amazing videos!
A while back I was bed bound for a few days in a lot of pain and in and out of being coherent but I remember stumbling apon your videos and watching them on repeat, it was the only thing that made things feel bearable but when I got better I had no idea how to find those videos again. This channel is an unbridled success. The voice of the narrator is both soothing and gripping, holding your interest and making the viewing experience top notch. This was better than many mass-produced documentaries. I absolutely love the pacing you use. One reason I always loved documentaries is because they are relaxing non-fiction stories that slowly progress. But it seems like most of the ones that are produced by networks now are fast-paced and overly dramatic, making them stressful rather than relaxing. Also, your video is stunningly beautiful.

I've been catching all of the live streams for the Salas y Gomez Seamount Expedition so I was very pleased to see a new NWF doc about Schmidts voyages!
It was absolutely brilliant! My wife kept quiet almost throughout the movie… fascinating
I've had an intense hyperfixation with sea creatures and marine biology documentaries since I was a kid and rewatching Finding Nemo for the 12th time in a row and was practically raised by David Attenborough's Our Planet. I'm neurodivergent and an artist and editor and soooo particular about the documentaries I watch but this has hit the damn spot and I'm obsessed with this channel now. I get so giddy when I see someone loving marine biology as much as you clearly do. Please keep this up, it is my favourite thing right now. Blood belly comb jellyfish are so beautiful they unironically make me emotional lmao

I think that is a line I will never forget. A thing that will occasionally pop up in my head and just leave me in complete wonder and awe. "80% of our planet's living space is the deep sea, and that means 80% of our planet's living space has never experiences sunlight." 35:55

This has to be one of the most inspiring, exciting and beautifully produced documentary I’ve watched. While observing these new discoveries is absolutely mind blowing and fascinating I’m also loving watching the passion and enthusiasm of these many scientists and their unbridled excitement when they spot a rare or new sighting. I can’t begin to express how happy that makes me! It was wildlife documentaries like Blue Planet and South Pacific that first inspired me to love the natural world and pursue a life centred around understanding and appreciating it - I’ve wanted to be a nature documentarian since I could walk. If I can inspire even just one other person, I’ll be over the moon.

It’s hard not to smile along with the scientists when they are witnessing such amazing things at the bottom of the ocean. I used to want to be a marine biologist as a kid and I’m glad that great work continues to be done in the sea.
