I feel bad for Donovan in this because people for the past 50 years have watched this and have warped it into this silly competitive contest thing where Donovan is somehow humiliated for all time but if you pay attention it was friendly and they were just sharing. Donovan was like 5 years younger than Dylan and seemed to have admiration for Dylan. In this clip he even asks Bob to play "Baby Blue", so it wasn't like Bob was trying to put Donovan in his place or something like that. Donovan just started singing a song, maybe to ease tension or to share his song, he was not initiating some kind of challenge. As for the songs, though not the masterpiece that "It's All Over Baby Blue" is, Donovan's song is still good, especially considering he was only 18/19 years old when he wrote it. Donovan done really well to sing in front of Dylan and his entourage. At the time Dylan was a huge inspiration for The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. It doesn't come much bigger than Dylan, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Donovan's songlist from 1965 is incredible. Catch The Wind, Colours, Turquoise, Universal Soldier, Summer Day Reflection Song, Candy Man, Jersey Thursday, Ballad Of A Crystal Man, Josie, War Drags On, Ballad Of Geraldine, Try For The Sun, Belated Forgiveness Plea. Go listen to some of those amazing songs. He went on to make Sunshine Superman album, which included The Trip, Season Of The Witch, Celeste and the title track was a US number 1. He made Mellow Yellow, There is a Mountain, Sand and Foam, Jennifer Juniper, Atlantis, Hurdy Gurdy Man, Love is Hot. He went to India with the Beatles and taught John Lennon his fingerpicking style, which Lennon used on track's like Dear Prudence and Julia for the White album. Donovan is definitely underrated in my opinion. He was a great Artist in the 1960s. Check out his cd Donovan 1965 and Donovan Sunshine Superman the best of compilation. These 2 cds will show you what a great songwriter and Acoustic guitarist he was, especially in the 1960s.

Donovan was only about 19 years old in this clip. Wow! But two amazingly talented songwriters. Dylan is, of course, more edgy and can tap into the core of our souls with his lyrics. Donovan was always kind d of a feel good songwriter - and I've always enjoyed his music. The song "Sand and Foam" is one of my favorites.

I didn't know him then; I wasn't even born, but in the mid 1990s we lived on the same street in Maidstone and became drinking buddies. After the pubs had chucked out, we'd got back to my basement room and listen to old vinyl. I left Maidstone in '97 and went traveling for a few years. When I returned in 2001, I learnt he'd passed away. RIP Brian, I'll always have fond memories of our times together, and your stories of hanging with the great and the good of the 60s music scene.
I've been studying and learning from this clip for years. The difference between Donovan's and Dylan's performance here is the intensity. Watch their eyes. Dylan engages everyone in the room and looks into their eyes, making them feel like the song is being sung to them. He even laughs and smiles with them in parts. The eye contact includes everyone into the performance; a warm welcome! When Donovan plays, he looks into space in the room - stuck in his own head. Bundle of nerves. He sits facing away from Dylan, embarrassed. He already thinks he can't outplay Dylan, and therefore can't. The inner critic sees to it. When Dylan plays, Donovan leans in to hear and feel every word. He is a man in awe, unburdened by pride and keen to learn. Bob Dylan is a fountain of knowledge, passed down from Woody. His intensity as a performer burns bright like a shining beacon and draws people in. He is an incredible song and dance man and thank fuck he shared his magic. Now the next in line needs to learn the secrets!

In the early days of folk I played guitar behind "Baby Blue'' who was David (Cohen) Blue from Rhode Island. Dylan called him that after Erik Anderson told David to change his name to something catchy and Dylan said "it's all over now "Baby Blue"; happened one night in the Village in a coffee house.
This is such an amazing video. You can tell at first there is some hesitancy to the situation. And with dylan encouraging the obviously enthralled yet nervous donovan saying "hey thats a good song man" . Then there is a cut in the scene and something happens in dylan. You can see the donovan's song taking him to another world in deep thought. What a shift in attitudes. At the end bob says "do you want to hear another song?" I wish the video kept going

In the film Dont Look Back is where this clip comes from. What looks like Donovan hesitating, is really a nervousness from a situation prior to when this clip starts...someone earlier threw a glass out the window, they are in a hotel. Dylan chewed out Donovan, not because he thought Donovan did it, but Dylan did assume it was someone in Donovan's entourage....now some back story, the hotel was already fed up with Dylan's group...noise complaints and when confronted Dylans manager was a jerk to hotel manager. So Dylan freaked over a glass being thrown out the window because he didn't need more heat from the hotel and he didn't want someone on the street getting hurt :20 you see Dylan apologize to Donovan saying "hey, I just didn't want anyone to be hurt". " I just didn't want the glass to hurt anybody."

There are people who get excited / inspired by things other than drugs.. you put a group of people who are that passionate about music and human energy in a small room with a guitar and u prob wouldnt need any drug to feel high. It's weird when the comments seem to see something completely different than from what I saw. Like, perhaps it's because I got to this video after watching a Donovan interview where he explains how growing up in a big Irish/Scottish family led to many nights of singing uncles and aunts and how it just takes one to start the party... that's what I see here. I see him sharing his music and wanting to hear something from Dylan in return cuz sharing music is how he was raised.
Watching this again after watching it a few times over the years, the same thing hits me every time... the same thing that hits me whenever I see or read any interview with him... Bob Dylan is a wholy unfeeling and self-centered egomaniac.
Almost certainly true. He’s also a genius. Joan Baez does a tremendous job sort of explaining who he is, and while he’s pretty much as you describe him, something seems to continually draw people to his music and personality.
Dylan of course trumps Donovan's early acoustic singer-songwriter stuff if it has to be a friendly competition (though I love the work of both) but Donovan branched out later in his career, albums like Sunshine Superman and Barabajagal are incredible and very different from anything Bob would ever go on to do. To even make a direct comparison between them to see "who's better" on the whole is pretty apples and oranges. That said, I know if I was in this room I wouldn't help but feel more deeply moved by Dylan's otherwordly sound, though I would no doubt have a wide grin on my face for Donovan's bit too.

This is a great clip, but a couple of observations: First, imagine how Donovan must feel, being asked to perform in the presence of the great Bob Dylan, who was light years ahead in terms of popularity and even talent. But why are people so intent on comparing the two? I love both artists. Dylan seems a bit cocky here. He gives a wry smile as he sings, as if to say, yeah, I know I'm good. But I would recommend you listen to the interview he did decades later with Ed Bradley, in which he admits he can no longer write songs like he did as a young man. It's a pretty remarkable admission. Also, in defense of Donovan, he wrote some of the seminal songs of the 60s-70s - songs like Hurdy-Gurdy Man, Season of the Witch, Sunshine Superman, Atlantis, etc. Really not accurate to say he wasn't an influential and great artist in his own right. All you're seeing in this clip is two artists at different phases of their creative arc. I'm sure Lennon and McCartney weren't as confident about their abilities in 1960 as they were in 1968.

What?! Dylan had no respect for those “cats.” He was toying with Donovan. He pried the guitar out of Donovan’s hands. Donovan was a fine pop star who, like most pop stars, faded into relative obscurity. Dylan, on the other hand, went on to become only the 10th American to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. What’s priceless is the film captures that moment of bleak realization for Donovan. Bobby already knew it.

Donovan done really well to sing in front of Dylan and his entourage. At the time Dylan was a huge inspiration for The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. It doesn't come much bigger than Dylan, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Donovan's songlist from 1965 is incredible. Catch The Wind, Colours, Turquoise, Universal Soldier, Summer Day Reflection Song, Candy Man, Jersey Thursday, Ballad Of A Crystal Man, Josie, War Drags On, Ballad Of Geraldine, Try For The Sun, Belated Forgiveness Plea. Go listen to some of those amazing songs. He went on to make Sunshine Superman album, which included The Trip, Season Of The Witch, Celeste and the title track was a US number 1. He made Mellow Yellow, There is a Mountain, Sand and Foam, Jennifer Juniper, Atlantis, Hurdy Gurdy Man, Love is Hot. He went to India with the Beatles and taught John Lennon his fingerpicking style, which Lennon used on track's like Dear Prudence and Julia for the White album. Donovan is definitely underrated in my opinion. He was a great Artist in the 1960s. Check out his cd Donovan 1965 and Donovan Sunshine Superman the best of compilation. These 2 cds will show you what a great songwriter and Acoustic guitarist he was, especially in the 1960s.
So cool to see musicians at their peek sharing their tunes. This is one of those rare "fly on the wall" moments in musical history that we actually get to see. If only there were some footage of the Beatles meeting Elvis and rocking out....

Playing in Hamburg sometimes three sets a night, they needed something to keep them alert and that was an amphetamine pill they ate, especially John. He took loads of them. No wonder he became a junkie (he took heroin for a time, or a couple of periods), he just loved drugs more than the rest.
anyway, Dylan and Beatles 1964. They hang out quite a bit, but what Id like to see ia when Dylan gave them their first taste of real weed. Ringo was up on ceiling. Paul thought of something that meant reakly much to him and wrote it down. It just said something random, norhing that meant anything, at least nothing he could remember. They all loved it. What an important event in musical history. Hadn't the Beatles med Bob Dylan on the 64 tour, and never got that first positive effect on marijuana, music history mifgt have looked different. Beatles had of course come across the weed at some point. But right after the meetings with Dylan thwy started to experiment qnd the next album was "Rubber Soul".

Donovan was only about 19 years old in this clip. Wow! But two amazingly talented songwriters. Dylan is, of course, more edgy and can tap into the core of our souls with his lyrics. Donovan was always kind d of a feel good songwriter - and I've always enjoyed his music. The song "Sand and Foam" is one of my favorites.
At the very end when Bob says "you want to hear another song" got a huge laugh in the theater.

I didn't know him then; I wasn't even born, but in the mid 1990s we lived on the same street in Maidstone and became drinking buddies. After the pubs had chucked out, we'd got back to my basement room and listen to old vinyl. I left Maidstone in '97 and went traveling for a few years. When I returned in 2001, I learnt he'd passed away. RIP Brian, I'll always have fond memories of our times together, and your stories of hanging with the great and the good of the 60s music scene.
I've been studying and learning from this clip for years. The difference between Donovan's and Dylan's performance here is the intensity. Watch their eyes. Dylan engages everyone in the room and looks into their eyes, making them feel like the song is being sung to them. He even laughs and smiles with them in parts. The eye contact includes everyone into the performance; a warm welcome!
When Donovan plays, he looks into space in the room - stuck in his own head. Bundle of nerves. He sits facing away from Dylan, embarrassed. He already thinks he can't outplay Dylan, and therefore can't. The inner critic sees to it.
When Dylan plays, Donovan leans in to hear and feel every word. He is a man in awe, unburdened by pride and keen to learn. Bob Dylan is a fountain of knowledge, passed down from Woody.
His intensity as a performer burns bright like a shining beacon and draws people in. He is an incredible song and dance man and thank fuck he shared his magic. Now the next in line needs to learn the secrets!

I see two men sharing a wonderful moment in time. No animosity like most think or feel..
In the early days of folk I played guitar behind "Baby Blue'' who was David (Cohen) Blue from Rhode Island. Dylan called him that after Erik Anderson told David to change his name to something catchy and Dylan said "it's all over now "Baby Blue"; happened one night in the Village in a coffee house.

Notice how dylan said it at the moment Donovan had a repetetive line and says "that's what I'll do I'll sing a song for you" and people have a little chuckle.. Dylan says it at that moment to ease tension and basically say don't worry we ain't laughing at you or anything the song is good
In the film Dont Look Back is where this clip comes from. What looks like Donovan hesitating, is really a nervousness from a situation prior to when this clip starts...someone earlier threw a glass out the window, they are in a hotel. Dylan chewed out Donovan, not because he thought Donovan did it, but Dylan did assume it was someone in Donovan's entourage....now some back story, the hotel was already fed up with Dylan's group...noise complaints and when confronted Dylans manager was a jerk to hotel manager. So Dylan freaked over a glass being thrown out the window because he didn't need more heat from the hotel and he didn't want someone on the street getting hurt :20 you see Dylan apologize to Donovan saying "hey, I just didn't want anyone to be hurt". " I just didn't want the glass to hurt anybody."

Watching this again after watching it a few times over the years, the same thing hits me every time... the same thing that hits me whenever I see or read any interview with him... Bob Dylan is a wholy unfeeling and self-centered egomaniac.
Almost certainly true. He’s also a genius. Joan Baez does a tremendous job sort of explaining who he is, and while he’s pretty much as you describe him, something seems to continually draw people to his music and personality.
But fucking brilliant! He was and is a very unusual person.
I love Dylan, but Donovan is amazing in this video. Why choose one of the two when you have both in one video? Superb!

Dylan of course trumps Donovan's early acoustic singer-songwriter stuff if it has to be a friendly competition (though I love the work of both) but Donovan branched out later in his career, albums like Sunshine Superman and Barabajagal are incredible and very different from anything Bob would ever go on to do. To even make a direct comparison between them to see "who's better" on the whole is pretty apples and oranges. That said, I know if I was in this room I wouldn't help but feel more deeply moved by Dylan's otherwordly sound, though I would no doubt have a wide grin on my face for Donovan's bit too.
I have had the enormous thrill of seeing Dylan and Donovan playing live in Ireland, where Donovan now lives.

This is a great clip, but a couple of observations: First, imagine how Donovan must feel, being asked to perform in the presence of the great Bob Dylan, who was light years ahead in terms of popularity and even talent. But why are people so intent on comparing the two? I love both artists. Dylan seems a bit cocky here. He gives a wry smile as he sings, as if to say, yeah, I know I'm good. But I would recommend you listen to the interview he did decades later with Ed Bradley, in which he admits he can no longer write songs like he did as a young man. It's a pretty remarkable admission. Also, in defense of Donovan, he wrote some of the seminal songs of the 60s-70s - songs like Hurdy-Gurdy Man, Season of the Witch, Sunshine Superman, Atlantis, etc. Really not accurate to say he wasn't an influential and great artist in his own right. All you're seeing in this clip is two artists at different phases of their creative arc. I'm sure Lennon and McCartney weren't as confident about their abilities in 1960 as they were in 1968.

What?! Dylan had no respect for those “cats.” He was toying with Donovan. He pried the guitar out of Donovan’s hands. Donovan was a fine pop star who, like most pop stars, faded into relative obscurity. Dylan, on the other hand, went on to become only the 10th American to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. What’s priceless is the film captures that moment of bleak realization for Donovan. Bobby already knew it.

As far as I can remember, "To Sing for You: was the B side of "Colours or "Catch the Wind". It deserved better.
Not really, it was a pretty dull song.
