I lost a lot of a time thinking that footsies was the only thing i needed to be good, at the end of the day, footsies is just a tool beetwen all the other important aspects of street fighter that does not include necessarly neutral mind games, but also close range offense and defense, specific matchup knowledge, player habits... Thanks for the content Chris, knowing what to focus is very important.
it's crazy how many fighting game fundamentals I understand now because of your videos, I think because of how straightforwardly you explain them and how show ways to apply it w/o wasting breath!
I'm struggling to maintain 1800MR, and your videos are always super good to rethink my game plan and look for new way to improve. I was very focused on footsie and neutral those past weeks, but Mago (and you) definitely make sense when you are saying that we don't want to spend a lot of time in neutral !
You’re probably the best educational sf6 channel out there. I like to simply things as much as they can get and you seem to be able to do that very well. Would you say the contents of this video is all you really need to know
Incredibly informative video! I've been hesitant to spend time in the lab due to not really knowing what to practice, but this video has motivated me to actually do it and hopefully get me out of plat. Love that you get straight to the point and are very clear. 😄
Now this makes sense how sometimes when I encountered a player with decent footsies and solid aa, I’m surprised he got stuck at 1380-14xx MR. I think he lost to sf6 system a lot.
Great topic! I think that I agree with Mago. I think that this even goes back to SF2: even if your opponent may be better at "footsies", a great knockdown/wakeup/oki game can be a great equailzer. During the week, I was thinking about a concept that I think may be similar to, or can fall in line, with this: in SF6, the best way to win may be to see if you can keep yourself at a frame advantage as long as possible.
So I found your channel a while ago. No idea how. But I wanted to say you put out some really quality content. Keep up the good work and you’re bough to pile up the subs.
Edit - wow hearing mago say there is randomness in footsies is... So nice lol. It seemed obvious to me! But people never say it. And I don't mean just sf6. I back off too much. I play jp and Ryu and zoning is my comfort... Zone... Plus the feeling of baiting is great. I too often only bait or grab a few times. Not nearly the mix open to me, altho I Wil say jp outside of the corner I don't feel like I get many options for it. And with him I always go for more in the corner. But with Ryu I absolutely back off too much. Tldr you're right good video. I will take it to heart.
Zoning is good but I don’t think you can win against good players with zoning alone - look at the best guile players, they are all playing just outside cr mk range
At the start you mention increasing your master rank, but I think you want people of all ranks to watch your vids. 😉 Good points on going for oki from knockdowns. Interesting on coaching. Never tried that. And that strike/throw may be favored before shimmy to beat reversals, at least til they show to hit you. Special exception may be Zangief lv 3. I'm not a lab expert, but got KD oki from a character guide for my main. Nice vid. Thanks.
@@Chris_F Thanks for the response. Hope you liked the comment, thumb up & being subbed. I can edit my comment (though you said MR at the start). I'm highly competitive. Still taking time to watch your vids. 🙂
I noticed this recently I’m not master yet but I’m d5 and very close to masters. But I agree with mago sure this game has a neutral aspect like 4 and 5 but focusing on footsies has made me lose a lot more then when I started thinking about stopping drive rush, DI, Jump ins and character specific punishes/ spacing. This game is very weird compared to the other street fighter games but I kind of enjoy it.
Chris, great video as always!.. Which other video should I look for in your channel to learn more about what to do "after knockdown or DR knockdown" situation?... thx in advance!
As gief I almost always just go for oki set ups and true 50/50s. If I guess right every time I win. I beat players higher than my rank with hardly any real neutral game. I learned that after the fact. I was once gold beating diamond and some masters
Everyone stuck at 1400-1600 without Mago method, everyone learn Mago method, everyone become good with Mago method, everyone still stuck at 1400-1600 (with Mago method) 😂
Having good footsies is nice but it's literally where you get hit and take the most risk. Love that you're making more nuanced guides and not just basic ones. Before nerfs, and even now Akuma is strong because he kinda avoids most of the risks of neutral because of his walkspeed and fireballs. Diago literally wins matches in tourneys, rarely interacting with his opponents in footsies. Also look at top Rashids, yes they do play footsies but they know Rashid lacks range and reward in footsies so 90% of the match they keep to their side while throwing fireballs and taking advantage of gaps or mistakes.
Every time after playing you I've gone back to ranked and played people closer to my level, it always felt like I suddenly had so much more room to breath and think. Now I know why.........😒
Unfortunately this just confirms this game ain't for me. I thought I was going crazy when I found myself gaining more MR by just turning my brainoff and forcing offense but nope that's just how its designed lol. You very much have to "be the problem" on screen at any moment if that makes sense.
“Set play” has a few definitions. But yeah, all this talk about “footies / nootch” is unecessarily adding to mental stack. I’d say pay attention to your opponent, and carry on with your set play based on Opponent and MU. Footsies and neutral should be integrated into your set play.
I just dropped the game after reaching master with Terry when Mature & Vice came out. I forgot what a fun game KoF XV is. Far less guessing and more on skills. I will revisit this game when Mai arrive.
This is truly disgraceful, capcom made absolutely sure to cater to the scrubs. Snake Eyes said it, doesn't matter how bad you are in this game capcom got you covered. A game that encourages you to not play footsies is not a real fighting game, just a glorified rps. No wonder why you see so many randoms winning but they were nowhere to be seen in sf4 or sfv.
Gonna have to disagree. SF6 might be the only SF game where I actually feel safer in neutral than on my own oki. There is way too much emphasis on rack/paper/scissors and way too much damage and way too much easy comebacks.
Game isn't designed to be played "footsies". No shit sherlock. The core mechanic (Drive Rush) is essentially a neutral skip available to all characters. Skip neutral, then force 50/50 all day long while carrying to the corner. That's SF6, pretty much.
Japanese devs are obsessed with meter and aggression because they think it will bring more players in unfortunately. Legit might have to wait a whole generation of fighting games before it comes back around to more neutral based gameplay. Virtua fighter is my last hope.

Top advice. Thank you. I play Manon and I realise watching this that I have little to no set play.
She has a lot of setups! Check TH-cam and discord to find thrm
Who needs neutral when you can skip it

Thank you! That’s always my goal

Thank you Chris! I love listening to these while im at work. Gives me stuff to try when I actually get to play. Appreciate you bro 😊
You're welcome! I hope it helps!

My channel has tons of stuff for you to lab so you don’t need to be confused!
Omg I needed this! I been stuck between 1650MR and 1830MR forever.
Damn ur mad good. Who do you play?
OKI/set plays after Knockdowns are even more essential with characters without projectiles.
Now this makes sense how sometimes when I encountered a player with decent footsies and solid aa, I’m surprised he got stuck at 1380-14xx MR. I think he lost to sf6 system a lot.

Even being in mental frame advantage is enough I think
Very good shout, I need to lab this

Thanks bro! Here’s to 2025

I do want people of all ranks to watch, but I want to make videos for highly competitive players as well! I’m hoping to compete again myself next year
@@Chris_F Thanks for the response. Hope you liked the comment, thumb up & being subbed.

Yup as always!
Great video
I just started working on this recently
Glad it’s helping, keep at it!
ohhhhh I am having the same problem in master rank, I am gonna try this!!
Thanks again!!
Keep practicing and lemme know if it helps your win rate

Chris, great video as always!.. Which other video should I look for in your channel to learn more about what to do "after knockdown or DR knockdown" situation?... thx in advance!
That’s going to depend on your character, so I think you should check some character specific guides
I'm also in 1400-1600 hell and this makes a ton of sense to me.

Fantastic video I was focusing way too much on trying to be a neutral god like punk when my mixup and oki game is garbage 😂
You need both! There’s only 1 punk after all haha
This goes well with the bon chan video you posted a couple months back
Both show how to really play sf6
Everyone stuck at 1400-1600 without Mago method, everyone learn Mago method, everyone become good with Mago method, everyone still stuck at 1400-1600 (with Mago method) 😂
Lol you're so right, we will be forever fighting each other 😂
Capcom managed to create a pachinko version of a Fighting game.
MAGNUM OPUS
This video describes sf6 in a nutshell 😄

I am quite done with basic guides, I think I’ve covered everything at this point
Maining Ken and akuma you can’t not have setups on knockdowns
Every time after playing you I've gone back to ranked and played people closer to my level, it always felt like I suddenly had so much more room to breath and think. Now I know why.........😒
Sick BlazBlue Music man
Goat OST
i'm a granblue player but the opposite is true for me: my neutral is genuinely terrible but my oki is ok so i'm stuck in S++. bummer
this was how I first learned too, then I focused on footsies and whiff punishing, got good at that, and now I focus on footsies too much
Unfortunately this just confirms this game ain't for me. I thought I was going crazy when I found myself gaining more MR by just turning my brainoff and forcing offense but nope that's just how its designed lol. You very much have to "be the problem" on screen at any moment if that makes sense.

shamed to say that if you wanna play neutral then stick to smash bros. If you wanna play rock paper scissors over n over then play sf6

Very glad this doesn't apply to me
