Hey, editor here! Just to clarify, I was using mods to change the chatacter's costumes but I could only revert them to costume 1 in the replays, so the colors were the same but not the costume. The mod I used has the option to overwrite menu selections (that's how you get x characters' models using y movesets), but even though I disabled that option, the mod's selections would change the characters' portraits. Doesn't really affect anything about the video but I saw a couple of confused comments, even Brian_F noticed but I left it out. (Just didn't want them guessing based on the costumes, would've been a lot easier and they weren't relevant to the point of the video)
well your mod fails on all accounts cause if you couldnt change color then they knew instantly it wasnt punk cause punk always uses pink for all characters and outfits.
the Age of Empires 2 community has a thing called Hidden Cup, where everyone that qualifies plays under pseudonyms and nobody, including the commentators and the other competitors knows who is who and has to guess at the end of the tournament. It's a lot of fun and does a good job at showing off how unique playstyles can be even in a game where everyone is using the same pool of civilizations. It would be a lot of work but I'd watch something like that for SF6. Also I'm pretty sure a test like this would be way easier in an anime fighter, not just because there's more playstyle variety but also because there's like 1/5th as many good players to guess from.
I know we say sf4 had more player expression but i believe that can be because online was less of an echo chamber back then so more pro was left to their own tech. All info is shared now and as soon as a game drops is a mad dash to solve the meta
It's also super easy to say something like "you can tell who is playing by how they play" but how many people actually did blind tests like this? The answer is no one. I think the only game that I could tell would be Melee and even that only a few players who I have seen a lot and have distinctive styles. But don't forget, it's very easy for me to say this without having to prove anything.
@@no_nameyouknow not to sound super cocky but if they did this same video for sf4 itll be 100× easier than sf6 hell im pretty sure i can call all players in sf4 the playstyle and freedom and CHARACTER loyalists made it easy
@@no_nameyouknow Uh, not talking about Street Fighter here but you can do that quite easily with the older Guilty Gear games. It is not something a few oldheads came up with to underline "old game good, new game bad" but it is legitemately a thing. A big part of it was the bigger and way less linear moveset which did indeed let people come up with different solutions for different situations. Not only that but the sole act of hit confirming and routing was also more nuanced in older GG games and was another factor which would help you differentiate players. I myself didn't play much GG back then but even I could tell players like Lox, Rozari, Teresa and Jajamaru apart even though I didn't know much about the game. They even used different moves in neutral, combo routes, conversions etc. It's actually wild. I can imagine similar things with older SF games but I have way less experience with older SF footage so I can't vouch for that 100%.
I had thought about this exact concept, it's really awesome that a noteworthy player actually took the time to put something this comprehensive together. My hope was that they could also view old SF4 matches (if they still remember playstyles) and try to identify the practitioner of those characters WITHOUT multiple choice (B/c there were fewer TOP TOP tier practioners of each character). To display the difference (if any) in individuality of different generations of Street Fighter, and if there is merit to the complaint about lack of expression. Phenomenal content!
1. Shine blind 2. Hikaru blind 3. JB blind 4. Hurricane? Give me multiple choice - Okay, JWong I guess 5. I wanted to say CrackTatarian, give me multiple choice again - Booce I guess 6. Great content. With some refinement you could have a real series here. I liked round 10 when you knew which 4 it could be during the watch more than the earlier rounds where you knew afterwards.
this was an awesome video! I would love more like this and get people from different games and see how people do. It is really really hard to guess who based on one match and therefore very silly and fun!
I almost forgot that Shine also plays Ed, which is weird considering I was literally watching stream with him playing Ed before the patch. Usually I know him for his Kimberly.
regardless of the points the fact that you had things you were looking for for certain players kind of proves your point that people DO in fact have their own expressions on the characters.
No, because they were wrong. They may be attributing those styles or patterns to one particular player, but if it ends up actually being another player they are talking about, that expression isn’t so unique.
I have an amusing suggestion if you do this again. Have exactly ONE match be randos online and that always a 5th choice that you could pick. Would be funny.
There's definitely a style. Obviously you'll have optimal combos and optimal choices on things, but every player develops preferences and sometimes even dips outside of optimal patterns to hit their preferred more comfortable setups.
According to my TH-cam gaming recap, I'm in the top 0.3% of diaphone fans. It was news to me, but I felt compelled to come leave a comment just to boost your channel as a result😅
Yo your content has been excellent lately. Great editing production value, concept, and chemistry as the subject of the video with Brian. I hope you do this again.
This is really funny. On the other hand, in Smash Melee you have pro players on ranked that randomly run into players, such as PPMD (who hasn't competed since 2015), and they say "Oh man this player reminds me a lot like PPMD's Marth" and then later they realized they were playing against PPMD. There's an entire compilation of these instances. Crazy how different the style of players' characters are in Melee vs Street Fighter.
Tbf though there was a lot of thought put into these answers meaning that there was specific characteristics they could look for. I also immediately said daigo and recognized it as bonchan later
That second clip I was just immediately: oh that’s Hikaru vs Kobayan 😂 Edit: I think they were overthinking this. Just going off colour, and thinking who else would be in the match, if you don’t recognize both colour choices, is surprisingly effective hahaha
As an EU spectator the bison one really screamed Problem vs Hurricane Problem X will have the most solid defense you've ever seen and then at guess for game just do some insane drive rush mixup
Sf6 is the first traditional fighter i've taken serious and I been maining Rashid since he came out and I'm very proud of myself for correctly guessing the Rashid player
As an AKI player I knew that was Hikaru right from the start. I think most AKI players would be able to distinguish between Broski and Hikarus play at the very least.
I got Ed, Rashid, Ken, Juri, and Bison without looking at the options. I was unsure about the Ken one until I saw the cr. hp run under lol. For the rest, I had absolutely NO IDEA... Even after seeing the options, I couldn't even narrow it down at all lol
I'll be honest. Seeing the thumbnail as I scroll the front page I thought I saw two diaphones in two different angles. People makes jokes but for that split second Intotally believed the memes.
Match 4 didn’t feel like punk at all glance and i only watched him playing sf5. Punk almost never miss a wiff punish and his footsies are insane. His pokes and mastering of space is very characteristic of him
Awesome video, but how did I get all of them wrong. I'd love to see this for other games or even doing the SF6 one again in a different format, really fun watching the players and trying to pick apart who would do what.
lmao this was a great vid and it's funny to see that I got a better score than these two. Still a great vid and it's really tough like Brian said about how these are like ladder matches instead of being like tournament matches.
Anyone familiar with the term Christmas tree that Brian used, referring to random guesses in a multiple choice? I found some people asking online and very few people outside of Florida have heard it. Based on fast research lol
I live in northern Georgia and we definitely used that term but basically only in the context of Scantron (bubble in form) tests. Maybe it's a southern term.
The only one I guessed that you didn't was Jak and that was literally me guessing About being "confidently wrong" I started yelling "Booce" after like three interactions on the Ken match

that sounds super sick. idk anything about AoE but would love to see this applied to quake (champions or live, not picky lol)
Now do it for other street fighters to see if it was ever easy
we couldn't have asked for a better white man with a microphone duo
This eye candy duo is feeding my dopamine receptors 😂
It's good to see Broski getting out more.
Broski and sajam would complete the quartet
Yeah, seeing Broski and Sajam in this video was cool.
exactly, because if it's Bryan F & Sajam, it's just going to be just one white guy with a microphone
finally context as to why brian has the discord juri profile
Dude talking into a mirror pretending we wouldn’t notice
I cant believe Sajam would try to pull something like this
I know we say sf4 had more player expression but i believe that can be because online was less of an echo chamber back then so more pro was left to their own tech. All info is shared now and as soon as a game drops is a mad dash to solve the meta
for me its impossible to argue that this is not the main reason even if sf6 design does have problems that lead to less expression
