Chevrolet Corvette C5.R V8 Roar in action: OnBoard, Warm Up & Fly Bys!

  • During a free practice day, ahead of the 2019 Dix Mille Tours du Castellet racing weekend by Peter Auto, I had the great chance to see, record and put an action camera inside a real endurance legend: the Corvette C5.R.
    This one in particular is chassis C5R-002 and it was built at the very end of 1998, ready to be unleashed in the 1999 season, during which it was powered by a 6.0 V8 engine. In 2000 the engine was changed with a Katech LS1 427 7.0 engine mated to a Hewland 5-speed racing manual transmission.
    Watch it in action around Circuit Paul Ricard, driven by Olivier and Xavier Galant, for a few brief sessions. The first on board footage was recorded with an external mic placed inside the cockpit but very near to the right exhaust, while the second one is just the audio recorded by the GoPro placed on the roll-bar.

      @wyattjackson977 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@savagetuner2404you’re right about the cams and the power those motors are capable of. But to add to what you said, these cars are also extremely restricted of air which I didn’t know until recent years. Go to the 30ish second mark and look at the air intake. It’s a huge opening taking in lots of air, but if you look at the little “snout” that connects the air inlet to the carbon part of the intake manifold, the tube is maybe 2 inches in diameter at the most? If they weren’t restricted that thing could easily be 5 inches or more, basically the same diameter as the dryer appliance tubing that is just before the little “snout” I’m talking about. If that makes any sense at all lol. Either way, YES this car could make MUCH more power.

    I miss so much the sound of a monster V8 going down the Mulsanne straight... Sad to see Corvette going for a flat plane crank in the 5.5 V8 (Not a bad sound though but uncharacteristic from the Corvette).

    • @2K-Tan
      @2K-Tan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yes but it's what the original designer of the Corvette, Zora wanted for decades, hence the possible rotary prototype ones that almost made production. It may not be "traditional" but you have to understand that is the route that will bring "supercar performance" to people that don't have the means for Europe's price tags.
      Even though it's an amazing car, The thing the Vette has always lacked has been the handling and weight distro advantages you get from being mid engined and a relatively smaller displacement. The Corvette has the potential to take down the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini with the C8 for WAY LESS money. UNHEARD of for a Corvette production car
      5.5 may seem "small" to you but that's absolutely MASSIVE compared to most mid engined European counterparts. Just give it a shot before you write it off.
      I'm here for the same exact reason you are though.. Nothing like an old Vette. The C5 Z06 in Millennium Yellow is my dream Corvette, Odd choice I know but the C5 being the last year of the popups and that iconic shape really does it for me.

    • @nightdriver7216

    The new C8 might sound nice in its own right but man is this just the sound of America and boy am I going to miss it. Cherish our beautiful ICE engines while we have them people. An electric future just won't ever have the sensory overload that these machines have.

      I am 56, and I know that big V8 engines will be around for me to hear, in one form or another for the rest of my life. Unless some world dictator has them all crushed, or the world ends, there are so many of them on the globe, they will be around when people are driving nuclear reactor recharged electric cars. So, no matter how young you are, don't fret, as I like to believe that enthusiasts will keep American V8 engines as part of the soundscape for a long time to come.

    The 7.0l Corvette racing engines are maybe best sounding ever for me. Instantly know it’s them when watching 24 Hours, etc over the years - can’t say that about many engines! Whosever garage that is gets bonus points as looked like an old Panoz GTR in garage too

    I loved upsfiting nbd downshifting... I like the way it rolls curves with torque ! Even changing the gear in curve... And you call the power with a pedal-to-the-throttle it's okay !!!And it's a manual gearbox... the inside camera on the side the gearbox sings like a race one !!! Nice vid and so lovely sound !!! Nice vid !!!

      It's actually a C5-R. Both the car and the engine. The following car was a C6.R which was powered by an LS7.R engine. The C5-R engine shared it's architecture with an LS-1 and LS-6, while the LS7.R engine was a clean sheet design. Chevrolet used the experience learned from the C5-R engine to use for the production LS-7 engine.
