@@dreyn7780 Sorry, but the shortest distance between 2 points is a straight line - desirable. Taking a corner following the center curve is not the shortest distance - undesirable. That's why the quickest drivers in a race have learned how to approach, set up for, and cut the apex perfectly. If there is a sports car track anywhere near you, just ask people there who either teach road racing courses or are drivers, they will confirm just what I have said. Good luck!

The 289 is an often overlooked engine choice because of it's small displacement, but it sounds fantastic and performs/reacts very well with some decent mods. That speed was not going to beat, or even keep up with the Ferrari GTO - its main rival. That's why Peter Brock designed the coupe version shown here. The chassis and drive line was essentially the same as the roadster, but the new body style was much more efficient in cutting through the wind and could reach in excess of 195 mph.

The sound of an old school V8 can't be beat!
But I think that the gear ratios could be taller, since this engine has plenty of power and torque to move this small and light car into higher top speeds!

@Ray Boccino - An original Daytona Coupe - only six were made, put out around 385-390 hp from its 289 cu in V8. That said, even with only a 4 speed Bob Bondurant hit 197 mph on the Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans. Wow! Shelby had plans for installing an all aluminum 390 engine, but sadly, it never was created. Imagine the top speed that would have achieved! One of my favorite racing machines ever, and certainly one of the nicest sounding.

@@raynabozny2338 Bob B. was a great driver, which is why Shelby wooed him over from racing Corvettes to racing Cobras. He runs a fine driving school to this day. In the states, he likely never saw over 150 mph in a Corvette or Cobra - no long straights in U.S. tracks like the 3.2 mile Mulsanne at Le Mans. He was quick to say he had never driven that fast before, and hit 197 mph on the Mulsanne Straight!

@@raynabozny2338 - Did you ever hear his story of how Shelby got him to race a Cobra for the first time? Shelby could definitely recognize top driving talent when he saw it, and he saw it in Bob, who was racing Corvettes at the time. Shelby called Bob up and starts by saying "I got you a ticket on flight such and such and you'll be coming into LAX or whatever airport and you'll be driving # whatever Cobra." Bob quickly cut him off and said, "Hold on, I didn't even say I'd do it." Shelby's response was...."Well, do you want to drive the son of a bitch or don't you?" Bob's reply was something like "OK, since you put it that way. Bob thought to himself, If I learn anything useful, I'll take it back and use it on the Corvette! The rest was history, as they say, and I don't believe he ever drove a Corvette in competition again!
The other cool moment with Bob was when Shelby told him you're going to Europe and race for Alan Mann Racing, the Ford racing arm in the U.K. He was also told by Shelby that he would be the #1 driver. Well, Alan Mann had a much different way of racing and he told Bob you'll be #3 behind two British drivers, and if you don't want to race, then head back to the U.S.! The thing that really pissed off Bob was when Mann told him what order to finish in. Bob could not believe what Mann was saying and he promptly told Mann "I don't know how you do it here in England, but in America, we race to win! I know Bob is a level headed nice guy, but I sure wouldn't want to piss him off in any way - he's a big Dude!
