You guys 100% nailed it. I think people often confuse range with power. Layne had good range for sure, but NOBODY had his raw vocal power. That’s why you get goosebumps listening to him; you can FEEL his voice. What a unique, amazing talent.
@arteyeszb6343 - I love and have nothing but respect for Soundgarden & Chris Cornell but the tone of Layne's voice is more pleasing to my ear and just overall impresses me more. Chris's voice was a bit higher pitched and I always preferred deeper voices like Scott Weiland, James Hetfield, Jim Morrison, etc. but Layne is almost the perfect balance between the high and low.
I’ve had people say Chris Cornell had the best voice of the grunge era but I don’t care how high of a note he could hit. He still couldn’t do what Layne could. Goosebumps and hair on end.
And Layne could never do what Chris Cornell did, what's your point? That you have a personal bias against Chris? Congratulations. But both of them had different things about them that people admire them for.
LOVE HATE LOVE live at the Moore December 22, 1990, is LAYNE STALEY in his prime and UNTOUCHABLE PERFECTION. All other bands should strive to have a live performance this perfect. Layne is better live than studio version. One of the very few singers who are better live. The entire Live at the Moore concert from December 22, 1990 was turned into a live vinyl album and VHS called Live Facelift. It cost about 75.00USD last I checked. The VHS has live concert footage from December 22, 1990 of: MAN IN THE BOX, REAL THING, LOVE HATE LOVE, SEA OF SORROW, BLEED THE FREAK, bonus footage of IT AIN'T LIKE THAT live and official videos for WE DIE YOUNG, MAN IN THE BOX and SEA OF SORROW. Jerry Cantrell is the guitar player. He's a certified Riff Lord. He respects any musician who KNOWS their instrument. Layne wrote the song about his tumultuous relationship with Demri Parrott (pronounced Per-roh). There was cheating on both sides. Listen to the song from the mindset of a sociopath. How many times did Layne come back home from being on tour to find another guy just so smitten-puppy love-tattoo-you-on-my-chest in love with Demri at first sight. But the Demri fans think Layne should have lain down and taken that because he deserved it for screwing groupies on the road? There a few stories of her on the road with him where the first thing she thought of was scoring junk before anything else. I've come to the conclusion that apparently to Demri fans the Layne/Demri relationship is a sacred, hollowed relationship and NO ONE is allowed to side with him against her for what she did to him with the drugs and cheating on him, but he was lower than a snake for what he did to her with the drugs and cheating on her. She was so independent, she DID NOT even want to be recognized as his girlfriend (God-forbid that ever happen). Even though the second he told her he wouldn't get her any more drugs, she just turned around and shacked up with the next guy who would do what she wanted. Her family called Layne back home from GERMANY where he was on tour for a damn intervention with her. Layne never thought interventions worked, but he did it for her. There was one instance where Layne sent her out for coke or something, and she came back with heroin. Hell, it wasn't like Demri was headed for a life in a convent when she met Layne and on the day she was to take her holy orders, Layne corrupted her. She already knew how to get drugs when they met. Layne could have wished upon a star a million times over that she would have married him, but she wasn't going to give up the drugs any more than Layne would have, so there was no way in hell she was marrying him. She had such a feminist independent streak. When they were making the SEA OF SORROW video, the girlfriends were all invited down to participate in the video. Every girlfriend showed up EXCEPT Demri. She didn't even show up to support him let alone be in the video. Discussing the title track "DIRT", Cantrell stated that "the words Layne put to it were so heavy, I've never given him something and not thought it was gonna be the most bad-assed thing I was going to hear." Staley said he wrote the song "to a certain person (Demri) who basically buried my ass". In an interview with the Canadian magazine M.E.A.T. in December 1992, Layne Staley said about the Dirt album cover: "This album cover... I like to refer to it as "revenge". The woman on the album cover is kinda the portrayal of that person being sucked down into the dirt (laughs), instead of me. The picture is the spitting image of her, and that wasn't even planned. Actually, I was pretty angry about it when I first saw it - she's not happy about it either (laughs). It was real eerie. The girl on the album cover is really Mariah O'Brien NOT Demri. She had two heart surgeries that Layne paid for and two lung surgeries (that Layne also paid for) all stemming from endocarditis that she contracted through intravenous drug use. She passed away on October 28, 1996, from a bacterial infection that was a complication from the last overdose she had. Even though they had broken up for good by 1994, he still loved her and she was still hanging around in 1995 and 1996 before she hooked up with someone else a few months before her death. Demri’s death devastated Layne. A few months later, Layne asked her mother for the teddy bear Demri had with her in the hospital and a few other things. It took another few weeks and an accidental meeting on a busy street to exchange the items. The consensus was that Layne never got over Demri’s death. He used her death as the catalyst to go into a drug-induced tailspin in which he would take his addiction to lengths few could imagine or sustain. (This is coming from a Layne fan who was NEVER a fan of Demri and the many times she strung him along)
Holy shit dude, you should make a video about this. I've never heard of the demri stuff. Never even heard of her. And I'm a huge aic fan. Thanks for the info. ❤
All you - @tamibrandt - said is the truth and no much poeple are thinking about that ...! This "shit Demri life" Layne had ... Layne is my over the top singer (I am 68 now, a so long time with so few great times like this above) ...
@@BandHouseStudiosyup, this comment was an amazing of the tragic and haunting “Love Hate Love” story of Layne and Demri. Pretty much the one thing that everyone who knew Layne and Demri agree on is that Demri’s death completely destroyed Layne and was the mail in his coffin. He not only gave up all hope of getting clean, but in fact became he’ll bent on destroying himself. Mike Star was the last person to see Layne alive, and he said Layne had told him he saw Demri the night before. He told Mike that he didn’t care if he believed him or not but she was here (in his apartment). I always thought their story was tragic but fascinating. As troubled as they both were they really had quite the love story. Even if it did seem she was stringing him along at times I have no doubt deep down she loved him.
l have the VHS of this show........ lDK if it still plays but lm sure, l played this show, 200x. l saw the guys every time they came to CLT, NC. This IS, the BEST show on record. l was at the "1313 club" show. (Its on Ytube) That was the Best show l saw them live. (like MOST bands, ANY live show was "hit or miss". ) KIds need to KNOW, THE HEROS and shows they see ON-LINE, are the BEST shows and NOT, EVERY show. LMao. RIP Layne AND Mike.
LAYNE IS THE GOAT!!! This performance pretty much set the bar for anything that followed. It has everything-raw, emotion, heavy grit, a touch of ‘softness’ followed by a rub of sandpaper …it takes you on a roller coaster of emotions. Jerry plays that guitar in the same manner that Layne belts out his vocals. It’s not just simply playing cords - it is playing/singing every note with purpose….you feel it to your core!
I’m a lead guitar player, and there are three bands about whose bass parts I care deeply. They are Alice In Chains,Tool, and remarkably, Blue Öyster Cult. I learnt how to write great bass parts by listening to the bassists of those three bands.
I love the mtv unplugged performance of frogs!! It literally sounds like you’re sludging thru a swamp it’s crazy! Great reaction! And yes layne is the goat!!
Layne Staley is the GOAT, gold standard, at the tippity top of vocalists. I think Chris Cornell deserves the praise, no doubt but there hasn't been and probably won't be another voice like Layne(my personal opinion) 🥰
Layne is the goat.Think about how many people can even come or even attempt to try to cover Layne. Its because they would fail . power, range ,emotion .Noone compares.
Morello denied this in 2015. I don't think Layne would flow with that anyway... I have been a long time fan of Alice in Chains. I was friends with Mike Starr and got to hang out backstage a bit. Rip Mike Starr and Layne Staley.
Layne was truly a magnificent talent, yet GOAT status is subjective. And when it comes to rock n roll, the competition is daunting. That said, he's my favorite Grunge singer with Cornell being just a hair beneath. Layne had cool, unique vocals with that signature low tone or warble.
Love the way you feel the energy with your hands😂😂😂 i do that too. It helps you follow the flow of sonics and instruments when listening. People always look at me like im crazy😂 good shit keep it up
I've moved towards soundgarden where in my youth alice was it, Dirt and Badmotorfinger being my pinnacle albums. But Layne is something special. If he kept healthy and off cigarettes and heroin who knows what could have happened.
It just goes to show that while plenty of people tried to sing like Kurt and Eddie, NOBODY tried to sound like Layne or Chris because their pipes were so strong and distinct.
As a kid I loved and grew up on Godzilla movies, and the first time I heard Man In The Box it sounded like Godzilla's roar in human form. I was an instant fan and had to collect all their music. What you guys may not have known is Sean had no microphones on his drum kit during this concert. For him to knock out those powerful beats says something about this phenomenal band. However, it is more likely that in the early 90's the monitors weren't that great, and he probably couldn't hear that he was flat. Second however, I'm going with your theory because I love Layne. l saw them BOTH. Layne and Chris, IN THE DAY. ( Many times, they were Both a Train Wreck....(party party) But on a Good night, Layne was UN-Touchable. (and that NOT putting Geoff in the CONVO)
Thanks for watching! What else would you like to see us analyze/react to?

No doubt about it!!!

Layne Stanley is the absolute GOAT!!!
Hell yes!
Just remember: it wasn’t “cliche” when Layne did it. That’s came after.
Absolutely
Layne and Jerry were magic. Harmonies were original and awesome.

17:58 Not crazy at all, Layne IS the best singer in rock history hands down 👑
..............'Lost inside my sick head!
Layne is the absolute GOAT! His power and emotion is second to none!
LAYNE IS THE GOAT. Why is he not recognized as much as others by his piers? AIC body of work is sick!
🐐🐐🐐❤❤❤
Layne is a fucking monster vocalist. Pure raw and genuine talent!!

Layne is the GOAT. Best voice I've ever heard
🐐
Layne is otherworldly magical...
🧙♂️
Layne is the GOAT. Such a heartbreaking loss. If only he could have overcome his demons and Demri.

I think Layne had natural vocal talent!!!
Undoubtedly!
Alice In Chains are my favorite band of the 90’s by far.
Agreed !
OFC he 's the GOAT Layne is the F GOAT, the best rock metal singer of all time.
Layne was Audioslave's first choice as a singer. Morello wanted Layne
Holy fuck that's an amazing piece of info I never knew! That would have been AWEOSME
Morello denied this in 2015. I don't think Layne would flow with that anyway... I have been a long time fan of Alice in Chains. I was friends with Mike Starr and got to hang out backstage a bit. Rip Mike Starr and Layne Staley.
Layne is the GOAT. Even Corey Taylor says so.
Layne and Jerry singing together was PURE MAGIC!!!!!! Forever a Layne Staley stan!!!!!!!! RIP young man 💔

Love this review!!!! Great choice guys!!! Keep going!
Thanks mike!
Love the way you feel the energy with your hands😂😂😂 i do that too. It helps you follow the flow of sonics and instruments when listening. People always look at me like im crazy😂 good shit keep it up
maybe we are a lil crazy ;) thanks for watching!
If people have a suggestion of who is a better rock singer (or any genre) than Layne, please link a track or video, I’d love to hear it.

I feel that! Love those 2 albums!
Layne is really the greatest! It kills me knowing I'll never hear him live.
It just goes to show that while plenty of people tried to sing like Kurt and Eddie, NOBODY tried to sound like Layne or Chris because their pipes were so strong and distinct.
They were dedicated to the craft!
I wish i could hear this for the first time again..... the best to ever do it
Same❤

Hell yeah 🐍🐍🔥
Damn you are great with words
Layne is and ALWAYS will be the GOAT! I have thought that since first hearing him in the 90's, it hasn't changed.
😇
3 months later... LAYNE IS THE GOAT!
Hell yeah!
Layne is the GOAT glad to be named after him

Bass is iconic!
Not crazy at all. Layne Staley is definitely the GOAT!!! 🐐
All I know is, I’m going to watch Sea of Sorrow live at the Moore now, and keep the party going!
Great job guys 😎
That's right! We gonna finish that concert!
I love the idea of him dipping flat because he wanted to let you know he's in pain! However, it is more likely that in the early 90's the monitors weren't that great, and he probably couldn't hear that he was flat. Second however, I'm going with your theory because I love Layne. And yes, three instruments can make huge sound, especially when you have legends behind them.
Good point!
In my opinion he is the best of the best. RIP sweet soul.
Layne is definitely the GOAT
Absolute legend r.i.p layne ❤
RIP.
Layne's a GOAT. %100
I love Chris. He was only nervous when Layne walked in the room. And they were best friends
Hurts Still ...so glad to see Chains in the 90s ...
Seen a lot of bands and Layne is missed, fn heron
LAYNE IS THE GOAT ❤ Don't u think he found that thin line between love an hate here?! amiright?!
He found it !
I honestly think though Chris Cornell has more range and is insanely good… Layne is better live.. his voice is just more powerful and his vibrato was just perfect. It’s crazy because Layne was even better live than he was in the studio, especially in his prime.
Laynes pitch was better for sure but chris had range!
Audioslave right there with Alice in Chains? No way.
I got to meet Layne in 1989.
Absolutely Layne is the GOAT!!!
I love listening to musicians break down music this way, you and David heretic are the best on TH-cam at doing this.
Thanks!
Layne is the GOAT!
The TRUTH!
I love this. it was entertaining and actually felt human unlike many reactions which feels like bots reacting to music
Thank you!
Layne had many famous vocal coaches
Layne is the GOAT
🐐
I don’t get upset when reactors stop mid-chorus but is kind of like being at the part of a top of a roller coaster when you know you’re going down fast but the ride operator stops the ride half way down. It takes the momentum out of it. That being said good analysis.
True :) Sometimes you gotta stop at the top to see what is really going on!
How can you guys not know who the Mike’s are in AiC? And Starr was the greatest Bassist to ever play!!
Layne the GOAT
Damn right!
LAYNE IS THE GOAT!
Layne is badass. The difference between AiC and other bands is you ‘feel’ their music on a visceral level. The tandem of Layne on vocals and Jerry on lead guitar/co vocals is pure magic.
Layne is the GOAT-a rock 'n roll GOD, one of the only two that I'll ever pray to, with Kurt Cobain being my other GOD!
🐐🎶🤘🏻🎸❤️♾️
❤❤❤
Layne was indeed The Goat.
LAYNE IS THE GOAT 🐐

Pure raw primal voice....no ove like him💥💥💥
Layne is the GOAT..
🐐🐐🐐
"Seattle musicians" like that means anything anymore.
It means musicians that live in/near seattle. Thanks:)
Jerry plays G&Ls. I play a G&L. They are AWESOME guitars, and Jerry is one of my favourite guitarists, because he plays-much like my favourite guitarist, Buck Dharma-that combination of straight up, minor blues rock interspersed with eerie, mystical-sounding Phrygian riffs… It’s the greatest guitar sound on Earth to me.
I wish I could I could say something about Layne that hasn’t been said a thousand times before, but I can’t, so I’ll just say this:
LAYNE STALEY is the G.O.A.T.
Seattle musicians used to be amazing, they all had so much talent.
Layne is the Goat
Love Layne forever he is the greatest… ❤ I recommend Mad Season-Wake up there Layne is absolutely gorgeous… this song he wrote about his adiction and is so emotional and heartbreaking… 🖤
Wake up would be a good one! Love it!
Hey, fellow Seattleites!! Great vid! 😊 oh, and we bassists ROCK.
Yo! Seattle is tight and Bass is Best! Thanks ❤❤❤
You guys need to have respect for these singers man, you young bucks!
Are you talking about Layne? The reason I am a musician? You need to learn what analysis means
