Raw emotion ... the driving force behind grunge (the Seattle sound). Raw emotion backed by the sureness of Stayley and Cantrell's vocal harmonies. For me, hair or no hair, this more or less sums up how and why AIC has endured and to this day remains so fresh, real, alive.
This is still my #1 favourite band of all time. Receiving a copy of their sophomore LP changed me forever, both as a music fan and as a person. The lead singer and frontman here, Layne Thomas Staley, has influenced me so much, that some 30 years later I still find myself bearing the marks of his impact on me. Thank you for doing this reaction.
I only got into them about 5 years ago and they jumped straight to my favourite band. The shameful part is I'm 32 years old!! How did I sleep on them so long when I loved nirvana and all Chris Cornells stuff...really let myself down. But just happy I found them at all
As an avid decades-long AIC fan, I was SO EXCITED to finally hear someone mention how the lyrics sounded like it was about a narcissist. I read somewhere that Jerry wrote the song from the perspective of a sociopath, and almost all sociopaths are also narcissists. As a survivor of narcissistic abuse I understood deeply--more deeply than I wish I did---the lyrics of this song and they are hauntingly spot-on, as is the music and the whole performance. To me it seems that in addition to his incredible vocal talent, what takes him up to legendary is that his singing is so deeply entwined within his own emotion that he WAS emotion when he sang, every time, and because of that, everyone could feel it, and still feels it today. He and this band have provided a lot of comfort and even saved lives since they created these masterpieces.
I wasn’t watching the video only listening at that moment, and it made me stop and look and see how she got the isolated vocals. Only to be pleasantly surprised to see what you elaborated on above.
This is probably the best demonstration of the harmonies that AiC were so famous for. Absolutely beautiful performance. Highly recommend this is the next song you check out!
Nooo pls noo, down in a hole has been soo many times reacted to, I can't stand it.. other more upbeat songs of theirs deserve analysis The unplugged has the beauty to it and it's a classic for us fans but is sooo not his greatest vocal performance Man in the Box and Would? (any 92 or 93 live version will do) FTW
I never thought id be watching reactions to Laynes voice but every time i see them, it makes me so happy to see them acknowledge the pure beautiful insanity that was Laynes voice. fly high 🕊️
Matt, I was just thinking how amazing it is to see that he can still bring this kind of excitement to the world. I wish I could hear one of his songs for the first time again.
I can't believe it! AIC!! You analysed LAYNE like no other, I watched thousands of vocal coaches react to him and you're the most informative hands down, no one dared to mimic him but u went there hell yeah There are so many layers to his techniques that was so his that ppl till this day have a hard time to replicate . I love Layne to death and I'm sick and tired of vocal coaches reacting to the AIC MTV Unplugged! Yes it was a classic for us fans but it was defo not his best night for obvious reasons, although he sang beautifully. There are so many more videos/audios of him doing upbeat live Man in the Box, We Die Young, Would?, Junkhead, Sunshine What always stands out to me when I watch old live AIC bootleg videos is that more often than not it was recorded with a potato andyet you can still hear him very clearly blasting through the PA and crappy cam. He was an angel.
Could not agree more...I have commented more than once that I hate when reactors talk about how the Unplugged AIC performance is what they love, when all the old AIC fans know that that courageous, bittersweet performance is Layne struggling so hard with his demons, but being there for his band...it's so tough to watch. Give me younger Layne live and if I want later on, I'll listen to the albums...R.I.P. Layne and Mike...we all miss you both so much.
Ken Tamplin dares to cover anyone, and he does it incredibly. Look him up, I think you'll love him! 🙂 Also, the best cover of any song of theirs I found so far is a rendition of "Man in the Box" by "The Merlins" (Pinhead). Had to remind myself it's a cover (and a dark parody one at that) a few times.
You should honestly react to this whole show. The 5 songs they played could be argued as 5 of the top 10 live performances of the 90's in my opinion. Absolutely incredible show
Great analysis on a great singer. Layne was one of the rare singers who is better live. This show may have been his best live performance. Every song I've heard from this show he absolutely nails it.
I remember being introduced to Alice In Chains. San Francisco at The Stone. They handed free cassette EPs at the door. I got hooked, and wore out that cassette from playing it repeatedly. Facelift was my first and favorite AIC album and Love, Hate, Love is one of the more satisfying things to belt out while driving. Thank you for reacting to it.
I seen them first time opening for Ozzy no more tours in Louisville. He had a broken leg and destroyed in a wheelchair and on crutches. Ozzy had to bust his ass for 2 and half hours to match him.
Layne had a voice that no other person could capture. He did phenomenal thing's with his singing. Just like Janis did. It's Heartbreaking that 💔 they died so young.
I have loved this band since I was teenager and it still bothers me that he is gone from this earth. Thank you for reacting to this ... His voice was like no other.
I very much enjoyed watching your beautiful reaction to this powerful song. In was 14 in 1992. My friend got this cassette from his older brother and we jammed it constantly for years and it blew our minds too. We were able see them on the Dirt tour opening Ozzy with Sepultura. Even at that young age we new this man’s voice was something otherworldly. RIP Layne Staley
This is AIC at their peak. This performance is in my opinion, the greatest of all time. Everything and everyone was in sync, the musical atmosphere was perfect.
My favourite live performance ever. I purchased this vhs 30 years ago or more, and would watch this concert repeatedly. Layne was on another level, may he rest in peace.
One of my all time favorite Alice in Chains Layne Staley performance!! My other favorite is Down In A Hole. And Layne Staley in the band Mad Season live at The Moore!! Wake Up!! Awesome reaction. Thank you for sharing this awesome video 😊💓🤘✌️
Down in a hole unplugged is a must do for vocal coaches because you get to see a great example of Layne and Jerry singing together and why their harmonizing together was so legendary.
It's a vocal coach, making a vocal analysis, who didn't skipped the guitar solo That's how we see the people who really enjoys music and really know how to value all kind of musicians That's one of the best vocal analysis i've ever seen from Layne Staley, congratulations and i hope you keep going recording this kind of stuff :)
She knows her stuff DAMN most vocal teachers just know the basics not a lot of distortion but SHE DID she knows how it is created... That's amazing thanks!
You are the only vocal coach I watch and have subscribed to... as others have said, you actually performing the notes, then explaining how it's done is amazing, plus the little side comments and breaks you do are super fun. Please do some more AIC, Layne Staley has a great range beyond the belting he did in this one and it would be fun to watch your reaction.
By FAR ,my favorite vocal coach reaction!! Somehow, when you sang along(talent and intelligence, and humility), you actually sounded like the vocalist. Yet other vocal coaches interrupt the video ,every 5 seconds, with their poor attempt to steal glory for themselves. And ,to top it all off, you're beautiful, as well. Please keep doing what you're doing, my friend!!❤️❤️😁😁
This might be the greatest analysis of Layne's incredible vocal performance on this night (he was incredible period but I always think this performance of this song on this night is his absolute peak) that I've ever seen
I love your analysis on Layne Staley. He will stand one of the greatest. One thing that I learned from these guys (grunge singers) is that you are not just singing with your heart, is basically your entire muscles and bones thrown into the performance followed by your mind and soul. It is the combination of all those things what makes the voice so beautiful of scary or loud or awesome. Hard to get the words to define the feeling you get from such talented singers. It is fantastic that people is still listening to those voices today, maybe is the right example of how talent endure generations and the past of time. Layne's voice is imprinted in the waveforms of the universe to last forever. Thanks for the effort you make doing your videos. Saludos desde México!
This was a great review of Love, Hate, Love! That said, please don't stop doing non-rock/metal reaction videos! I love them all. You're so well-educated and informative, and I haven't seen anyone else break down techniques but actually perform them as well. I love metal, but I also love other types of music, too. I always look forward to your latest videos.
Ruddy Nora that blew the cobwebs away. Gotta admit although I know of this band I hadn't heard them and now I must go find more. What a voice. Thank you FVM and thank you whoever suggested this ☮️💟🤘🏼
Thanks for reviewing this. I love this band and Layne's vocals !! Layne had such an amazing gift of melody and emotion, such a sad loss ! Interesting thought.. I have noticed with a LOT of grunge singers they often go flat (like Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder) - even though I am pretty sure they have a very good sense of pitch.. I have often wondered if it is accepted in the genre because of the tense feeling it gives the listener and feeling you get when it finally resolves. Again, thanks for appreciating this song and singer !!
Speaking from experience and imho, its us showing a lack of caring about a note so you know we're really really bummed in this moment of the song and usually and end of song or lead break.
Just found your channel. I watched dimash SOS, the best I've seen. Some say "vocal analysis" and just do comments like "yep, love that shoes", you are another level!
Layne had the chops to be a great singer regardless, but what's sad is that were it not for his struggles and demons, I'm not sure his singing would have been so soulful. Listening to his singing and understanding the lyrics he's singing is like having pure anguish injected into your veins. Hearing songs like Nutshell from their Mtv Unplugged show, knowing he's been fighting heroin addiction, you can hear him lisp in a way he hadn't previously due to addition-related tooth loss and it just hurts you to hear the change from before. Hearing Layne screw up the beginning of Sludge Factory, and seeing Jerry console him and reassure Layne is heartbreaking. Layne in his prime was an absolutely jaw-dropping singer. I still get goosebumps hearing his melismatic runs on songs like this one or Sunshine off of Facelift and Rain When I Die off of Dirt. Alice in Chains' Dirt to this day remains one of a handful of albums I can and do listen to start to finish without disappointment. I don't even know what more to say other than the loss of Layne as well as their bassist, Mike Starr, is tragic and a constant reminder of how beautiful, yet fragile, life is. Thanks for the reaction. It was spot-on and very knowledgeable.
Im only 8 min in and i have to say, thank you soooo much for loving Laynes voice, it means alot to us long time fans. I watch all the lady vocal coach vids and just found you now and you are amazing, you actually sing and explain in great detail wow , i'm just a sound engineer but love music and learning about musicians.
So many coaches focus on technique. You analyzed the best part, the emotional feeling.many coaches don’t allow that part of analysis to be shown. If music can’t make you feel then there’s no need for it💗 thank you
I love how you demonstrate what people are doing with your voice. Not everyone can do or does that. It is a pleasure as always listening to your reactions! I really connected with Alice and Chains when I was in college many years ago and love how the lead sings. Other songs I would suggest are Down in a Hole, Rooster, Man in a Box. Sending you good vibrations 🤗
Fantastic work on this video. Love this song. Layne’s talent is incredible here. Really enjoyed watching your reaction to Layne’s amazing talent. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and teaching.
I have watched several vocal coaches react to this video and yours has been the most insightful one. Don't what took me so long to find yours. But I very much enjoyed it !
I love her reaction and I love her mimicking him so much. A lot of the time she sounds just like him. He will be greatly missed. And by the way it doesn’t hurt that this is my favorite song that they ever wrote. Thanks for checking this particular song out.
I don't know who you are, but I'm glad this was your introduction to Alice in chains, as opposed up something from the unplugged show, which you will be flooded with suggestions from. It was beautiful and heartbreaking, but he sounded so nasaly and really not very good towards the end before he died. Good to see you heard hin when how voice was this strong and powerful. I absolutely LOVE Alice in chains. Have a feeling I'll be seeing you around.
Love this reaction, all the other "voices coaches" out there don't explain vocal techniques at all while u did it perfectly. You should react to other AiC performaces, Layne is just a genius. Btw love ur fun personality :)
Yep, OK, this is now hands down my favorite Reaction to this video. That was a brilliant journey: funny, genuine appreciative reaction to the amazing performances, informative, interesting; this had it all.
Layne Staley was an amazing musician and singer, his death and his last days...well actually sadly 12-13 months were incredibly saddening to read about, he definitely lived and felt the music he blessed us with, he's one of the many many artists gone too soon and too young I always find myself wondering where/how they'd be if they'd survived to present day and what their music would sound like (If they'd continued to make music, you never know!) RIP Layne Staley, your music was a big part of my infancy and growing up it both gave me comfort and kept me strong. 🤟🤟 I love your reactions because not only do you really keep yourself open to the music and the experience where you really enjoy and feel the music, and THEN on top of that your technical & technique breakdowns are amazingly well explained and then amazingly demoed for us!, Are you in any bands or do you have your own music? I'd love to hear it! =) All the best
I've been a long time fan of AiC but I found an interview with his mother on youtube a few years ago, apparently he sung in church choirs when he was young. I hadn't realised he had been singing for so long through his life but it makes sense with the mastery he had.
I find so many reaction videos to be fanboy b.s.You did this tune justice, you get it. I subbed for the first time to a reaction video channel. Keep it up!
Once again you are the best vocal coach on you tube by far imo. You are a gift to the world in more ways than you know. Your analyses' are spot on. Your ability to physically show how these vocalists do what they do while educating us is unmatched. I personally crown you Queen of Vocal Nerds! Lol. Now if I may request some artists that require your expertise.NeObliviscaris : Forget Not,devour Me Colossus or Intra Venus. A progressive melodic death metal band with two vocalist and one plays a mean distorted violin. They are a must for a true rollercoaster ride . Next the mighty Opeth: Ghost of Perdition,Blackwater Park or Harlequin Forest all live at Red Rock amphitheater or Royal Albert Hall. The masters of melodic death metal. And Last but should be First on all Vocal Coaches list is Mike Patton. He has fronted 6 or more bands, solo projects ,voiceovers for movies and video games, etc. His abilities are comparable to Jeff Buckley,Dimash,Freddie Mercury and Alison Krausse. He has compilation vids of him singing in all genres. He is unmatched in ability, agility flexibility and has a 6 octave range. His rabbit hole is infectious to any true vocal nerd. So thanks for blessing us with another great vid. P.S. I and I'm sure many others are anxiously waiting for your next song. You are an amazing vocalist with a wide array of talents that the world needs to experience. Thanks again from South Mississippi.
This is the perfect song to show Layne Staley's true talent. The power of his voice is insane. Your reaction is this same as mine the first time I heard AIC ❤ It hit all the way down in my tummy in the best way 😊
You’re my new favorite vocal coach! Doesn’t hurt that you love Layne’s voice as much as we do but all the knowledge you’re dropping about distortion control and what’s happening in the chords is awesome. 🤘🏽
Out of all of the reactors that have the "voice teacher" "vocal coach", "opera singer", etc. attached; you are the first I have seen to mimick the vocals with precision. Earned a subscriber. Do you have any music?
Stumbled upon your channel as an avid AIC fan. Looove your explanation of Layne’s performance. More AIC please! Check out some “unplugged” songs, later in Layne’s career, he had lost some teeth at that point, yet manages these incredible sounds. Thank you for this reaction, enjoyed!
Thank you! You are literally the first vocal coach that explained the use of an R sound for resonance in words like "could" or "the" and I've watched so many. It seems to baffle everyone else.
YES! A few things: 1. AiC is my favorite band of all time. Many vocalists have really resonated with me throughout my life, but Layne sits at the top of that list. 2. You can literally impersonate damn near any vocalist from what I’ve seen! I’ve noticed that since your Jinjer reaction. 3. PLEASE revisit Lorna Shore with their new song “Pain Remains I: Dancing Like Flames”. I think you’ll love it. It’s very emotional, so prepare yourself.
I usually leave these reaction videos a bit annoyed, you my dear are a delight to watch. You let the music actually play a bit before talking about what you liked and the more technical side of it. And you seem genuinely funny, interesting and talented, loved it.
I saw Alice in Chains when Facelift was their new album. At the time as a 20 something kid I had no idea what I was seeing, that Layne would be gone so soon. For you to now show me exactly what talent he had has absolutely opened my eyes. Thank you 😊🤘
I've watched this video so much when I'm down. Layne Era AIC is hands down my favorite of favorite bands. His vocals his emotion his pain. Their songs have helped me tremendously
Our sweet fairy voice mother, I promise you won't be disappointed with Sara Bareilles live version of "Yellow Brick Road". Thank you for sharing your amazing in talents in voice, musicality, and analysis of the above. You da bestest!
I must say this is a great reaction and breakdown of this song but i have to say i was not expecting this nice lady to be able to make the aounds she did id love to here her really tie into a song and do a cover .

The Grunge Generation had about eight.
Live at 24 years old.. Layne was insanely talented.

may i say that i, now 30+ years on, have FINALLY "discovered" grunge..
Best of the big 4 of grunge
It goes AIC, Soundgarden, Nirvana, then Pearl Jam
Layne was SO HUGE ..he would BLOW you out of the room with his voice

I love that she just got it instantly. So many people take the “peel your face” line literally and can’t get past that.
It was my understanding that Layne wrote this about his and Demi's really dysfunctional relationship.
I can’t believe how spot-on your Layne Staleys at 02:48 and 08:00 were! You seem to be able to effortlessly mimic any performer. Amazing!
I wasn’t watching the video only listening at that moment, and it made me stop and look and see how she got the isolated vocals. Only to be pleasantly surprised to see what you elaborated on above.
Yeaa, she sounded just like him :O
For real! Besides being gorgeous I fell in love when I heard that lol 😂 pretty accurate compared to the other 957 other reactors I've watched
And that's a really low note for a woman to sing. And she did it effortlessly. In general, I'm always blown away by her singing in these videos.
This is why I love her channel
This girl has a good sense of humor. I approve.

Ruddy Nora that blew the cobwebs away. Gotta admit although I know of this band I hadn't heard them and now I must go find more. What a voice. Thank you FVM and thank you whoever suggested this ☮️💟🤘🏼
Welcome to AiC. ❤
If music can’t make you feel then there’s no need for it💗 thank you
Bleed the freak or any song live at the Moore by AIC Layne kills it
I love how you demonstrate what people are doing with your voice.
I'm falling in love with these reactions. You are really nailing it. And they never get boring. Keep it up! :)
Greatest band of all time ...RIP Layne and Mike
Your reactions are seriously the best and so fun to watch! Smile on my face the entire video :D Amazing song too!
I love your reactions because not only do you really keep yourself open to the music and the experience where you really enjoy and feel the music, and THEN on top of that your technical & technique breakdowns are amazingly well explained and then amazingly demoed for us!, Are you in any bands or do you have your own music? I'd love to hear it! =)
All the best
She has her own music. Check out her Lolli Wren channel.
I've been a long time fan of AiC but I found an interview with his mother on youtube a few years ago, apparently he sung in church choirs when he was young. I hadn't realised he had been singing for so long through his life but it makes sense with the mastery he had.
Great choice of AiC song. Really loving your analysis. Really wishing I had a vocal teacher like you. Thank you
I find so many reaction videos to be fanboy b.s.You did this tune justice, you get it.
Your reaction is this same as mine the first time I heard AIC ❤ It hit all the way down in my tummy in the best way 😊
I love your reaction and excitedness about his voice. He’s one of the best. RIP
You’re my new favorite vocal coach! Doesn’t hurt that you love Layne’s voice as much as we do but all the knowledge you’re dropping about distortion control and what’s happening in the chords is awesome. 🤘🏽
I loved everything about this review, not only a great song and comments and insight, but you made me laugh a lot
Out of all of the reactors that have the "voice teacher" "vocal coach", "opera singer", etc. attached; you are the first I have seen to mimick the vocals with precision. Earned a subscriber. Do you have any music?

Ahhh , finally LAYNE. MORE ALICE IN CHAINS PLEASE.
My favorite band all time. Layne so powerful a voice jus amazing one in a million. And aic HARMONIES are jus beautiful
This is the greatest reaction I ever seen, in anatomy of my friend.
One of my favourites by Alice in Chains - thanks for reacting!
Was just listening to this the other day thinking itd be a great reaction vid!
Legendary concert btw. Just an insane line-up ❤❤❤
The most technical of the vocal coach reviews. Amazing video.
Alice in Chains are their own genre. They cannot be compared to any other band. Layne 🤘
Thanks for a great reaction, and you go at apart of the song was great I thought..
Stumbled upon your channel as an avid AIC fan. Looove your explanation of Layne’s performance. More AIC please! Check out some “unplugged” songs, later in Layne’s career, he had lost some teeth at that point, yet manages these incredible sounds. Thank you for this reaction, enjoyed!
your editing makes me happy
agreed!!! 😃
Thank you! You are literally the first vocal coach that explained the use of an R sound for resonance in words like "could" or "the" and I've watched so many. It seems to baffle everyone else.
YES! A few things:
Awesome job! Love this song, thank you for doing a video on it!
I usually leave these reaction videos a bit annoyed, you my dear are a delight to watch. You let the music actually play a bit before talking about what you liked and the more technical side of it. And you seem genuinely funny, interesting and talented, loved it.
Yes! And now...more Alice In Chains in the future please!🤘
Beso grande desde Argentina!
OMG, you give the absolute best explanations of the technique involved and explain it so well. Thank you
What a beautiful explanation of how one of the greatest singers of my lifetime gave one of the best live performances I can remember. Bravo!
King Layne!
RIP!
ABSOLUTELY MASTER CLASS,
AIC NO COMMENT!
Magnificent analysis! 👏
Alice in Chains is by far one of my favorite bands, and you broke this down nicely 🥃
I saw Alice in Chains when Facelift was their new album. At the time as a 20 something kid I had no idea what I was seeing, that Layne would be gone so soon. For you to now show me exactly what talent he had has absolutely opened my eyes. Thank you 😊🤘
Best reaction video to one of the greatest bands of all time!!!
First time watching and I’ve watched many reviews of this song. I must say yours was the most epic. Also your eyes are hard to look away from💚
This reaction is just making my day!
I always get stunned with your knowledge and enthusiasm!
I've watched this video so much when I'm down. Layne Era AIC is hands down my favorite of favorite bands. His vocals his emotion his pain. Their songs have helped me tremendously
Loved it!! ❤ Ive heard it probably thousands of times AND STILL have the same reactions you did every time. 😊
YESSSSSSS more AIC reactions pls i loved this 😭🖤
Our sweet fairy voice mother, I promise you won't be disappointed with Sara Bareilles live version of "Yellow Brick Road". Thank you for sharing your amazing in talents in voice, musicality, and analysis of the above. You da bestest!
The best analysis I've seen for this type of performance! Perfect amount of scientifical.
Perfect timing. Just saw AIC in Alpharetta a few nights ago. Layne is missed sorely ❤️
That was the most impressive and entertaining analysis of this performance I’ve seen so far.
I must say this is a great reaction and breakdown of this song but i have to say i was not expecting this nice lady to be able to make the aounds she did id love to here her really tie into a song and do a cover .
