No, many were about non-conformity, the fact that society was a bunch of lemmings treading water in a septic tank, and the resulting depression and drug abuse from these realizations he used as escapism. Such as "Junkhead"

@@22andxi3 not that judgemental. Leading a band doesn't make you so much different. As soon most bands got big and wealthy, they live the American dream too, with that modern kitchen, big screen, kids and what not. The real non conformists are the ones who're able to rise above maya. And all the rest puppets of ego.

It’s even more baffling that a) no vocal training whatsoever 2) He absolutely would not have cared for any accolades lol. (Prob why Maynard respects / respected him so much amongst the many others), I think he was just doing it for him, like therapy, but had he lived to be an older man, it’s interesting to think how this would have held up if he got clean. Technique etc. It’s just almost frustrating that this guy had the talent most VOCALISTS (anyone) could only dream of, & we lost him so young. Then again, it’s a contradiction, we got it like this BECAUSE of his demons. I don’t know how you choose as the audience. Maybe he knew that. Grunge isn’t for 4x4, with a house sample, for life of the members. They had to walk thru fire to be this good 🤷‍♀️ Poor Jerry, the two of them were such a vibe, he’s so talented & he killed it every time ❤ 🎸 If only you could turn back the clock, but w Layne, I don’t know that it would have changed anything, maybe if his girl didn’t pass? But he was a ticking time 💣, which makes it so much sadder.

Lead guitarist Jerry Cantrell considers this song the masterpiece of their debut album, that his own guitar solo gives him chills, and that Layne’s vocals on it are amazing. A tormented encapsulation of the fraught relationship Layne had with a girl named Demri Parrott, truly the love of his life. They used drugs together, got addicted together, and her death in October 1996 was a blow he never recovered from. Yet even so, it was as he sang here, “I still love you, but I still burn.”

There are many reasons I enjoy your videos. For one, many of the videos you analyze are songs by bands I love. This song is a perfect example. There is also your respect for the artists. And since I am not a trained musician or singer, listening to your analysis of the video is interesting as I gain insight into what is required to produce this music I love so much. But, the utter highlight is seeing you watch a video and truly feeling and becoming engrossed by the passion and emotion that some of these singers/artists put into their songs. Layne poured his heart and soul into his songs, his singing. And watching your facial expresses as you tune into those feeling, seeing your empathy is amazing. Why? Because I can empathize with you as I went through the same thing listening to Alice In Chains, Rush, Triumph, etc.... I especially love it when you are so engrossed that you lose yourself in the song and forget that you are supposed to be analyzing it. To me, that speaks volumes about how much the performance has captivated you. Keep up the AMAZING videos!

Jerry was doing a lot of unannounced shows in LA some time after Layne's passing, and William's previous band, Comes With The Fall, was often the opening act. Love this one. Have all three albums (on both cassette and CD) and the Unplugged one too. The ending is pretty much the same on the studio version...but "Live" feels so much better when hearing. A couple of more great Layne songs (both by Mad Season) are: River of Deceit __ Wake Up. Studio versions or "live at the Moore"...either or.

That brings back so much, I remember 12-13 years old going everywhere with my walkman jamming to Alice in chains albums over and over again all the time, getting in trouble in school jamming out to this wow I forgot all about that, old guns and roses, Megadeth, Ozzy damn I remember all over again what made me so passionate about music in the first place. Thanks Vocalist you done it again I really needed that bit if inspiration today much appreciated, funny the unexpected places like can take you to find serenity isn't it lol. Hope everyone has a wonderful day, something about is calmness with his intensity that always inspired me it's like calm during the storm or something, whatever it was he was the master of it.

The "grunge movement" is an immortal piece of music history. How did these bands; Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana all come out of 1 place at the same time with so much talent and passion. Why Seattle, Why 1989-1995, demolishing any pop rock of the time and ending in suicide and unreasonable death of all the singers throughout the 90s. I mean has that ever happened in similar fashion before.

Thank you for doing this. This is a good "alternative" to the subtle beauty/vocal harmonies of Down In A Hole (MTV UP), where it showcases Layne's unbelievable power when he was at his best. I always thought this reminded me of a 4 min song version of Romeo & Juliet : tragic love expressed by seminal artists : Shakespeare with his poetry, Layne with his voice.

Since I've found your channel I've been waiting for your reaction to this particular song/performance. Bums me out when people react to the Unplugged songs, especially as an introduction to the band, since Layne was nowhere near the level he was at during this show. Keep up the great work!

  • @danabomb100

Layne easily draws you into his world and plucks at every soul-string on your body…..sometimes his rips them right out. His talent was far beyond what he was given credit for at that time. It makes me happy that ppl are still learning about him & his craft and are appreciating him in the manner that he deserves. He could swoon you with his gentleness and the next word, blow your doors off with his powerful, gritty delivery. @13:20 how he pushes put the yea-ah…even quivering at the end & puts his head down, you know THAT was his heart singing. Layne was in a class of his own.
Jerry matches this with his sludgy riffs. He is a master at making that guitar ‘sing’. Sean & Mike perfectly round it all out. They were a young, but brilliant, group of talented fellas. Most definitely an Iconic band!!!
