Layne across any genre is the best vocalist ever. Anytime someone disagrees, they can never prove their point with an example. His range and effortless power was otherworldly.
The amount of hours he put in to perfect his voice often goes unnoticed. He’s a once in a century talent.
That said, the new AIC is still elite because Jerry was the creative force behind AIC. He wrote a majority of the songs and was the engineer behind the signature atmosphere. He’s also a master networker and got AIC the exposure they needed to even be heard. Without his business IQ, they would have been another “My Sisters Machine” or “Tad”.

What you hear-is not just Layne performing a song….it is the energy of his soul being so powerfully expelled for the sole purpose to touch yours so you feel what he feels as he weaves through a story. Not very many singers that are considered ‘talented’ have this ability. It’s a rather small club.

Layne, Staley, Kurt, Cobain, and Eddie Vedder are by far the best singers the world has ever had. It is such a shame that two of them are in a grave right now.

Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, Scott Weiland, M Shadows, Phil Anselmo (pre-vocal chord destruction) are the best and it’s not even close.
Eddie Vedder and his throat singing isn’t in the conversation. Kurt Cobain while a brilliant songwriter would even admit he wasn’t as polished vocally as the others mentioned.

Appropriately enough, this is a girlfriend-song. Layne was such a phenom, I've read and heard conflicting information whether or not he had any vocal training. According to Layne, no, in an interview I saw I think he said the only musical training he had was playing Trumpet in middle school. But I've heard that the producer who worked with the original Alice'n'Chains, sans Jerry, Sean, and Mike, gave Layne pointers and exercises to maximize his efficiency and control. Others have said he worked with various vocal trainers in the Seattle area but I've not found the sources. It's plain to see and hear he was a natural, and his tone and timbre are definitely his and his alone, but you also can observe good vocal techniques. His ability to project his voice is unreal, especially for a skinny guy. Getting to see other people see this for the first time is always entertaining, because you don't really have anything to compare it to in recent decades. Everything is so processed, sterile, and artifically perfect these days it robs the emotion and soul from both recorded and live performances. It's what it is, things change, but something has been lost in translation: the humanity in the music. The rawness and vulnerability of Grunge is what I miss most. For a generation labeled as jaded, we were more than expressive just in our own way. It took me awhile to come around to the reformation of Alice in Chains, but I'm glad I did and I regret my prejudice. Alice in Chains is Jerry Cantrell imo. His songwriting, his tone, and his lead is why that band was the odd sheep out. They were the metal-Beatles. I'm glad he's still going, it's a different sound but the strength of the songwriting is still there because Jerry is still there. Your Decision is an amazing song from Black Gives Way to Blue. Stone is awesome from The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here. I really like Rainer Fog's title track as well. To me, they don't have a bad album or even a mediocre one in their catalog. Sap and Jar of Flies are two of the best EPs of the last 30+ years. Cool reaction, a band really demonstrates their chops when they song even better live, and for Layne to be able to sing like that live.. there will never be another. And that's okay. It keeps his memory alive and well. ✌️🤘

Jerry's solo career is under looked. I have My Song saved as one of my favorite songs - that being said, the magic was Jerry + Layne. Wish they had been able to collaborate together far longer than they got.

No one has the power Layne did, but I don’t think you’ve listened to Williams solo work, the live performances, or his band Comes With The Fall. He absolutely has extraordinary power and is held back from showcasing that in AIC due to the harmonizing aspect with Jerry Cantrell. Willy is a monster.

This and "Slaves & Bulldozers," right? What a performance here. Being from Seattle it was totally unfair of us to have Cornell and Staley at the same time. I wouldn;t go as far as hair metal on AIC. Even early. That reminds me of Poison and Warrant ("Cherry Pie," ew.) I'm thinking AIC is the closest to the mercurial "grunge" label.
